No Tegridy: The Evolution of Randy Marsh
Vložit

- Randy. Marsh. Has a character in TV history ever undergone a transformation like Randy? Over the course of 23 seasons of South Park, Randy has gone from a simple father and geologist, to an obsessive weed farmer who literally caused the ongoing pandemic. A truly WILD evolution. But honestly, if you follow Randy’s journey over these 23 seasons, the funny thing is that this development… actually feels really natural, and earned! He didn’t just BECOME an obsessive oaf one day, they slowly introduced certain quirks to Randy’s personality and those quirks evolved and developed over time. Randy went from being a moderately utilized secondary character to, arguably the star of the entire show. And while there are some people who take exception to Randy’s presence at the forefront of South Park these days, I think the journey itself is a fascinating one. So let’s comb over 23 seasons worth of the man with absolutely no Tegridy and explore the evolution of Randy Marsh.

It’s no shock that Randy is more prominent. I’m sure when Trey and Matt started the show they saw themselves more as the boys but now 20 years later they see themselves more as the parents.
From a Jungian lens, I always took it as Stan and Kyle are Trey and Matt as kids respectively, and Cartman is Trey's "shadow" self while Kenny is Matt's "shadow"self. I agree they seem to use Randy as their protagonist now moreso, because it feels the mst "direct" for Trey at least, Randy's voice is literally his voice unaltered.

Because we all know that making content the creators themselves actually enjoy doing is "trying too hard".
One amazing thing about South Park is how consistent the characters are after almost two dozen years. They aren't the same static characters, but adapt with he times yet are still the same and have progression.

Randy took so much control in the later seasons that genuinely felt pretty jarring to me when he only appeared at the end of the vaccine special .
I do love the vaccine special, but a part of me is worried that it's the beginning of South Park losing its core appeal for the sake of pandering to those who just want more kid adventure stories.

"The core appeal of South Park was the writing and the comedy"
They're simply tools in creating content that's offensive and gets a reaction out of particular targets. They went from pissing off parents, to giving topics and subjects the middle finger, to finally trolling their fans and not giving a shit. South Park is made for adults and for good reason.

if you think about it, Randy evolving into becoming Lorde makes alot more sense than it should when you remember that he was already famous for a small period of time when he was in that boy band.
Randy moving out to the weed farm is also great meta-commentary on the idea of modern life in the city sucking and wanting to move back out into the country.
Randy is exactly the type of person who'd feel that way as he's been chasing the grind for his whole life and even when finding success, it never made him truly happy. So to find fulfillment, like many people who feel like him, he buys a small farm out in the middle of nowhere with his family.

I feel like Randy is an incredible example of how a guy evolves over time in a very natural way after life has beat you down.
As a middle aged man rewatching all of the episodes again, I find myself really understanding the journey of Randy...
I started watching South Park when I was in 4th grade. I’m 33 now. I’m sure there are many similar fans. Randy slowly becoming one of the main characters helps me relate to the show. He is less mature than the kids by a long shot but the humor associated with him is usually something that couldn’t be done by a child character, such as what he did for his Pandemic special.
Remember how unspeakably horrified our parents and teachers were when they caught wind of South Park and how desperate they were to try to keep us from watching it? I was in 4th grade too at a friends house for a birthday party the night ep 1 debuted and like 8 of us happened to see it and were immediately obsessed and couldn’t stop quoting it on the playground and getting sent to the principal’s office. Great times

Randy Takes too much from the kids. Everything is just about how randy is a idiot now.
Over the years Marsh has become my favorite South Park character. He's consistantly changing and evolving while still being hilariously ridiculous. Only -M r - President Garrison is giving him competition in that field.
His son is mine. Randy is still one of my favorites
Fair, though i have to say, that whole season where 90% of garrisons lines were ‘oh jeez’ really annoyed me😂 i missed his total lack of tact and general offensiveness
I actually love the Randy-centric episodes because it’s what Matt and Trey want to do. I don’t want them to make something they won’t enjoy since it will lose what make South Park so great. It may not work for everyone but I feel like the more this goes on, the moments where the boys are the main stars will feel more special
I really really love the Tegridy farms arc, and especially the episode where Randy goes head to head with the nation’s vaping situation. It felt like such a breath of fresh air for the series. A welcomed change.
The problem I find with Randy is the character growth itself. He's one of the few characters that evolve during the show. The kids seem stuck, even if they were funnier early on.
I love how Randy bought the farm because he wanted a simpler life and tegridy in this idiotic modern world......Then he completely sold out, lost all tegridy, started making deals with Commnist China and evil Disney, started the corona and is completely failing as a father and husband. I love it!
In the process f*cking a bat and a pangolin
Can't believe you didn't touch on Randy's fantasy sequence where he solves the problem and everyone loves him.
The perfect set up to his constant chase for fame and attention throughout the series.
What episode was that?
It makes sense for Randy (and even Gerald to a small extent) to have become larger focal points of the show as Trey and Matt got older; they related less to the children and more to the adults and started writing more for them.
I seen all of south park multiple times through my childhood and now, I totally forgot he's a scientist
South Park is in a weird spot
Half the fan base wants more ground stories with childlike adventures that go off the rails
The other half likes the political commentary and thinks they should stay on that
Political commentary has always been a part of it (Ms.Cartmen sleeping with Bill Clinton to make 40th trimester abortions legal) but South Park is at a cross roads do they go back to their roots and try more simple stories that are ground or stay on the political parodies?
That would make an interesting episode breaking down the origins to current special on how their counter culture became tv culture
Problem with political commentary is turning people off. People take it personal
You make it seem as if they can't do both. The problem with modern day southpark is that the majoritry of it's episodes are based on politics.
If they just ballanced it out more so they'd have more adventures. both can be happy.
@@brandonnesfan you cant do both its anoying to tune in and its a goofy/political episode. Like the xfiles people either want more shadpw government conspiracies, others only tuned in for the monsters and fright
The point I always bring up is Matt and Trey spent literal decades mocking one note comedians (like Seth McFarlane) that don't change or adapt, imo I don't think the latter seasons are as classic but if they didn't try to change things up I'd lose some respect for them.
@@btf1287 Nah you can have both. The earlier seasons did it without issue, nothing stopping future eps from doing the same.
The big thing to do is just to not have political episodes be plot crucial episodes.
13:15 I loved they had Randy get in a "Hello there, children." in that episode, Chef's legacy is remembered.
*stands and applauds* one of the best character analysis videos and one of the best South Park videos I’ve ever seen. Just *chefs kiss* perfection
I love terrify farms. 1 it’s super ironic, 2 it gives us more towelie screen time which I love, and 3 it gives the writers another setting to work with. I can only imagine how difficult it is to create more interesting stories when you’re confined to just a small town lol
I really want the development with Randy to kind of come full circle with Sharon leaving him and taking the kids. It’s become increasingly clear that everyone in his family hates him. With that combined with how much Trey and Matt love writing out Randy’s antics, I feel it would be a great way to satisfy both the creators and their fans.
Sharon has already left Randy twice before so I don't think it'll really have any meaning or Impact in the show at this point

Randy was someone that was always someone's dad we knew. 20 years later he is now that slightly older mate who won't leave his midlife crisis.
I really liked him more when he was the major secondary character, but the Tegridy Farm stuff was okay.
I liked him more in episodes like the coach of the Sarcastoball team, the sport he created, or the World of Warcraft episode.
This was a really good recap on Randy! haha been watching for so many years that I never considered his character development!
I haven't cried as hard at a piece of media as much as I did that night watching "You're getting old" when Landslide plays. It hit me so hard and it still gets to me, then stan starts seeing poo again and it snaps me out of it.
Before the Season 23 finale came out I remember seeing a picture on the South Park Studios website that showed Santa with the four boys, only for the episode to say 'psych'. It's South Park at its most genuine. Pissing off people and not giving a crap.
I saw that too. That episode even had the original opening intro too, but the four boys only ended up appearing for a minute or two.
I thought it worked perfectly with Randy being in control of the town for half the season, then he gets run out of town, and we had 3 or 4 "normal" episodes like Season 21-22, and then the final episode they had to cave ask him back again. They could do it every season from now on, have Randy open the first episode with Tegridy Farms in control of everything again, and then he gets run out of town mid season but always somehow is needed for the finale so he gets control again for next season... Trailer Park Boys does this with the boys going to jail at the end of every season and getting out at the beginning of the next season, swearing this time they're never going to jail again... I would love it!
That finale episode with Randy, Jesus, and Santa doing fresh Tegridy coke is one of the best things I've ever seen. With the way things have gone since then in the world, we will look back on that episode in the future as an example of how open the world was in 2019, how much progress people were ready for, before this whole covid scheme started...
Wait, Randy was the only scientist in South Park? Did Trey and Matt forget Dr. Mephesto?
Lol it seemed like they did but he actually plays an integral role in that episode. Maybe he lives just outside South Park?

Yeah, but Butters was kind of forced and not well received because fans at the time thought he was meant to be Kennys replacement. The great thing about Randy is its more organic :)
They seem like they can’t help themselves but make more teggrity farm episodes. They seem to really like Randy as a weed farmer. They like it so much it’s sorta their main focus. They’re passionate and I like that

I think the reason Randy became so much more involved in the show then the main 4 boys was because at the beginning of the show Matt Stone and Trey Parker had more childish mindset but as the series went on Matt and Trey both grew up and realized they connect more with Randy and thats why he became more prevalent and got more development
one thing about Randy, he fully commits to whatever he does

I think Randy and Tegridy farms also had a lot to do with Breaking Bad and Randy being an Avtar for Walter trying to do the right thing and have "tegridy" but just completely getting corrupted. We've gotten a strain called Tegridy in Washington now and it's pretty fire.
The pride he was taking in the fighting was supposed to be like a juxtaposition of how much the kids didn't give a crap about something you'd think they'd be taking that much pride in.
When I first saw "You're Getting Old" I thought it was the end of South Park. Now I feel like if it had been the last episode of South Park it would have been brilliant.
Great video! I've been trying to pinpoint when the show sorta shifted to Randy! Great rundown!
(Besides the first couple seasons when the show was more about character with social commentary mixed in instead of primarily social commentary) when Randy is extreme, he is used to show the extreme parts of society.
He goes above and beyond to look stupid and exploitative to show how stupid people look who follow major social trends (at least to Trey and Matt). Then, at the end of the episodes, the boys point out how dumb he looks and what priorities should be.
He does evolve in ways that makes sense because he follows how society has evolved. People sell out, they act like selfish, narcissistic jerks who can’t acknowledge their own flaws or how their actions affect other people.
Tegrity farms also just shows how corrupt we are at this point. Matt and Trey always had a voice of reason and a moral to South Park, but now they just kinda gave up in trying to do that. You can see that a lot in the new post Covid special. They are saying, “this is where we are heading. And folks like Randy still don’t care or take any responsibility.”
I liked how this commentary pointed out how it also made sense with his character, though. He has felt unfulfilled his whole life and just attaches to the next thing. I don’t really pay much attention to Randy because he’s supposed to be awful, but I never really had it laid out like this. I am not sure if it was completely intentional (besides like, middle age crisis type trope) because the show isn’t the best at continuity. They have changed Clyde’s last name at least once and forgot plot points from earlier episodes in order to make new ones (I.e. butters had his first kiss I’m Hooked on Monkey Phonics, but they say he never had his first kiss in order to make him a pimp seasons later.)

Season 9 was Randy's breakout season. Losing edge had him as a secondary story or at least split with the kids. 9 episodes later we have him in the spotlight with Bloody Mary. Whenever I think of my favorite episodes, they happen to have Rand at the center
Honestly, Randy is my favourite character in South Park, although I haven't watched the show in years, I remember always finding Randy to be the funniest character in the show. The 'We must stop pointing fingers, Finger Pointing gets us nowhere...Steve!' will always be a line that'll have me in stitches.
Dude I love Randy!😂
Soon as he comes on screen I want to bust out with laughter, but then I have to remind myself that he hasn’t said anything yet!😂
Randy represents those moments you see your parents getting obsessed over doing odd things thinking they're someone they arent.
Randy’s character progression has been nothing short of brilliant
Weed jokes are too much fun to ever make Randy Marsh a geologist again.
It’s funny how relatable randy actually is where as we get older our own mortality becomes more and more apparent and our desires to succeed and be remembered for who we were as our names and faces slowly die as time passes and that despite the countless trillions of people in this world not even 1% of us will be remembered as we’re slowly forgotten and that’s what randy fears the most, and explains most of his abilities and quirks as he’s trying to remember his youth,
I love the way South Park traveled, with the characters and setting, not everything stays the same and it’s always cool seeing “fresh” material for the show which has been running for nearly 25yrs. And being able to access every season and episode made without censorship is a blessing. I’m Hispanic myself and I laugh at all the pokes they took @ Mexicans on the show, people just gotta understand South Park targets everyone to be equal or else they wouldn’t target anyone at all.
"if you're going to fight for your tegridy, don't forget to bring a towel"
Randy Marsh, the guy so ahead of the times he was playing a human hunter before World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
So was Kenny
905 was the 2nd southpark episode I watched on Tv when I was around 8 and I didn’t know anything about the satirical background or the pop culture references. All I could say was that it was fucking hilarious in the way how obviously ridiculous the whole scenario was and I hold this feeling till this day. If they make you laugh with adult humor and the pure amount of absurdity without you even knowing what’s being referenced, you can tell the writing was on point
Tegridy Farms got me back into South Park again and even led to me catching up on past seasons I ignored at the time.
I have such mixed feelings about where the show is, especially with Randy. I started watching only a few years ago, when I was in college. Personally, the kids are my favorite of all the characters in the show, particularly the main four. It’s why I like SP’s video games- they focus on the kids being kids and how it spirals into sheer insanity. I don’t mind Randy having Tegridy Farms- I agree that it feels natural, and I think it’s hilarious! One of my favorite episodes was the one where he started selling veggie burgers made with weed? And he had those shirts: “Tastes like s***, you won’t care”? Absolutely priceless. But I get kind of sad that we don’t see the kids as much. “Band In China” was really fun for me because hey, it’s the kids! And the vaccination special was amazing to see, with the kids being the main characters and having conflicts that are funny but also feel somewhat serious. I hope there’s more of that. I just prefer Randy as a secondary character rather than the protagonist of THE WHOLE SHOW. I think because I find it easier to attach to the kids emotionally and thus care about the outcome of the conflict.
But I agree that Matt and Trey shouldn’t force themselves to make episodes about the kids, especially not just for the fans. That’d be giving up their ‘tegridy.
