    My sis drove a 2001 Chrysler version of this car. 220,000 miles and the interior was still in great condition. So comfortable. Absolutely great on the road. Great find. Take good care of it and it shall be a great cruiser for years to come

    Always loved how the Chrysler sedans of this era looked and their spaciousness, just never felt like putting money towards one because of the infamous Chrysler reliability (particularly the transmissions).

    Regular oil changes at 3000 miles are important with this engine to prevent sludge build-up. I have had 2 Chryslers with this engine and they proved quite reliable with proper maintenance. Good luck!

    Thanks for your video.
    The layout of the drivetrain was influenced by the AMC/Renault Eagle Premier project, and the this layout also would make an all wheel drive option possible, which never happened, but it did make the replacement cars easy to switch to rear wheel drive. The styling for the LH platform was heavily inspired on the Portofino Concept created with Lamborghini. Both AMC and Lamborghini were owned by Chrysler at the time.
    I've had two 1999 Intrepids and still drive one with almost 200K miles. I've not had any sludging issues, but I did catch the 2.7 water pump gasket just before it failed. Chrysler redesigned the water pump gasket, so I was able to upgrade to the new design. I did replace the valve-stem-seals on both of my 2.7 Liter cars, and I recently upgraded the failure prone plastic coolant outlet connector with Dorman's aftermarket aluminum one. I've also replaced my share of plastic thermostat housings as well. I would like to find a Dodge Magnum station wagon (with a 2.7 Liter engine), but they are getting hard to find in good condition.

    Very good bro. I just bought me a 2000 dodge intrepid and I love it. It's silver with gray int. IV
    Got it for 180.00 and been putting parts on it. Already spent 800.00 on it. Bit going to put in car shows and do some more changes to it. Fixen one thing at a time. This car was way before it's time. It was designed with the help of so.e NASA Engineers along with the car company. One day I would love to put a hellcat v8 and change the computer just to have one fast enough. Thanks again.

      The Real Emile mate there’s more! I have one of these and the reflectors in the doors were originally lights, the black plastic on the back of the rear doors used to have the trim level of the car there, they removed the power outlet from the center council, and removed the back lights from the crude control buttons. All hope isn’t lost though because there was a 6 disk cd changer available as an option.

    I had a 2001 SE. Mine was a Chrysler because it was a Canadian version. Had DRL's and battery and engine oil heater. Cost cutting measures after 2002 were no rear sway bar, no fabric on upper door panel. No carpet on lower (kick) door panel. Pop out cup holder in armrest replaced by one piece cup holder. A couple more I can't remember off the top of my head. For the 2.7L, 0-60 mph in 10 seconds. Top speed was electronically limited to 116 mph. The car hits it's stride at about 60mph. Plenty of power at highway speeds. I drove from NY to Texas and got about 31 mpg on the interstate. Very comfortable car. The Intrepid is pretty front heavy. Makes it great in light snow with just all season tires. But also makes front brakes wear about every 35k. Front/rear balance about 65/35. I used full synthetic oil changed every 3k miles and never had any sludge issues. Drove mostly highway miles. If you just drive short drives and don't let engine heat up, may have issues, but that is true of any car. I had my Intrepid from 17k (bought it as a lease return) to 107k. The one major issue I had was that the water pump started leaking at about 90k. I caught it right away so water in my oil was minimal and caused no damage. But a lot of labor to get to the water pump as the radiator as well as other components has to be removed because of the engine layout. The engine is positioned like that because originally I believe, it was going to be rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. If you have the water pump removed you may as well have the timing chain replaced as well so as not to have to remove all that stuff (radiator, etc) later on. And if you haven't changed the transmission fluid I recommend you do that because of the age of the car. Also, if you haven't tried already, coolant flushes are difficult to do by yourself. Something about the way the hoses are routed and such, air can get trapped in your coolant system if you try to do it yourself. Better to have it done at the dealer or an auto shop. Think they have to use a pressurized flush to keep air out of the system. All in all, one of my favorite cars I've owned. Other than the water pump issue, about all I replaced was a front wheel bearing and the usual brakes and tires. Was still running excellent when I traded it in. I liked it so much that tried to trade it in for a 2002 R/T fully loaded.

    Back in 2011, my mom got a 1999 Intrepid Base with the 2.7L V6. The rear seat was huge, and I loved running my hands across the cloth door panels. The car was very sparsely equipped , there was no rear armrest, or even rear cupholders that I can remember. Unfortunately, the 2.7 didn't last long, and within a couple months, mom got a 2003 Hyundai XG that we had for 5 years.

    Back when Detroit actually designed sedans with usable trunks. Nowadays the few remaining sedans with decent size trunks aren't that great due to the fact that the trunk lids are WAY to short because every car maker is looking for the "fastback" slope.

      It was easy to destroy with cheap oil. The engine would accumulate sludge, which would deprive it of proper oil circulation. Using full synthetic oil, I use 5000 mile intervals, you won't have sludge.

    @omgcool7206 Před rokem

    The origin of the notorious sludge issues all comes down to the water pump. They tend to start leaking around 100k mi, which is a big problem on the 2.7L because it's driven off the timing chain, meaning coolant mixes with the oil. The 3.2L and 3.5L used an identical pump, but because they used timing belts, sludge was never an issue.
    Whether a 2.7L, 3.2L, or 3.5L, it's crucial to replace your water pump every 80k or 8 years (as a rule of thumb). It's advisable on the belt engines because you should be changing the belt at that time anyways, but also the pumps eventually had a tendency to seize (usually beyond 180k miles), which would be catastrophic on a belt car.
    The pumps really are the only major fault of these engines. They're otherwise very stout and known to regularly go well over 300k miles as long as they're maintained properly.
    As for the rest of the LH cars, they're known for premature inner tie rod bushing wear (cheap and easy replacement every 100k or so), but beyond that, they also hold up pretty well with any reasonable degree of care. As with most mainstream Chrysler cars, however, no one cares to properly maintain them, so they're quickly becoming a rare sight. I'd hang on to this one.

    • @johnd.crofts7901
      @johnd.crofts7901 Před 6 měsíci

      On the 2.7, the water pump seal has a vent hole (next to the block mounted thermostat housing), so a leaky seal does not put coolant into the oil. It was the water pump gasket on the 2.7 that often leaked coolant into the oil, and Chrysler (and the aftermarket) developed an improved gasket. The fix requires a new coolant pump that accommodates the redesigned (and thicker) gasket.

      That's right! The 2.7's demise wasn't an engineering failure.
      It was totally because people are so lazy. They skip oil changes, they never look under the hood, pull a dipstick once in a while, etc.
