As someone with a family member with media addiction that shit is devastating. ANY screen playing even advertisements is instantly more compelling than anything else. It's like living with a ghost, or a zombie. I know it's funny to clown on it because it sounds so absurd but it's just a crushing cycle of having to restrict websites and adding time locks so that people can still work and them somehow figuring something out and spending hours glued to the screen, aggressive towards anyone who even tries to get them to stop

I was developing a social media addiction but thankfully I noticed and immediately took measures to put a stop to it. But even now that Ive blocked all of the social media platforms that triggered it (like twitter and reddit) I still get an intense itch layered on a bed of anxiety whenever I see that my blocker has run out since it only works for 24 hours at a time, so I try to activate a new block session before the first 24 hours is up, but sometimes I forget to start a new session and all of a sudden I have access to all of the social media.
Most days this happens I can just quickly force myself to activate the blocker, but some days I cave and go on the social media thinking "oh ill just do it for 10 minutes". Then the whole day is ruined, I become an anxious mess in a bad mood and hours pass.
It seems silly I know but its a real thing and it fucks you up. It contributed to my sucidaIness and I believe that if I didnt stop it I wouldnt be here right now

From the sounds of it she’s aware that she’s hurting the people around her. She’s absolutely defensive however she’s not deluded into thinking she’s done no harm. I hope she gets better and can find other hobbies. The instant gratification that social media provides can be overbearing for many people. She absolutely fucked over her husband and children but I feel empathetic for her. I procrastinate and struggle to switch between using my phone and being productive and it has caused me to flunk tests, miss alot of school and continually disappoint friends for being continuously late. I can somewhat relate to the intense control that social media has and the inability to avoid being stuck in the same position for hours just scrolling.
That being said the infant gratification provides such a weak dopamine hit. I have felt my most happiest when buying and caring for plants aswell as tending to my insects and rabbits which involves watering and grass picking. Being engaged with my real hobbies fills me with twice as much happiness because 1) dopamine from the interest snd 2) dopamine for being excited that I’m in a place where I’m capable of doing this.

As to "where's the harm?".. like dude, this woman's story. This is the harm. This and the litany other ways you find people's browsing habits negativity impacting their lives. While there are certainly people who are able to use social media without it becoming so destructive to their lives, and while this woman is probably a particularly bad case of social media addiction, situations like hers appear in numbers that are by no means negligible. Even if it doesn't always play out in the same fashion as her story (divorce, losing kids), you don't think that people suffer disconnection from the world in a way similar to her?
I'm not even saying we should ban social media or anything crazy like that, nor do I think she is blameless (particularly over neglecting her kids), but taking responsibility for those actions starts by recognizing the problem and getting help to address it.

Raising awareness is crucial.
Also, to be fair, Ukrainians have always been very resilient to "getting offended." We never get hurt by things like that, we clearly have more important things to be upset at.

I get Noel being weirded out by the daughter helping her mom making a dating profile but it's pretty clear he's just never really seen that kind of parent-child relationship irl, but it's definitely real. I'm totally best friends with my mom, since she became a single parent I had to step up and babysit my younger siblings full time and take on a lot and in some ways our relationship became more of that of somewhat equal co-parents than strictly hierarchical parent-child. I tell her pretty much everything, she tells me pretty much everything, and while we've never been super shy about having adult conversations, now that I'm an actual adult I could honestly see myself helping her with a dating profile if she asked. Thankfully she hasn't since I personally have zero interest in who she's casually banging, but if she were to be like "hey help me pick good selfies to use for tinder" or "help me write a bio" or "look at this ridiculous message this guy sent me" it wouldn't be out of the ordinary in the slightest. Idk I guess my point is buddy-buddy relationships between adults and their parents isn't that weird, esp if you grew up in a you-and-your-mom-against-the-world kind of household

@@silentluvr Way wayyyy more common than what the o.p. said.
It's called Espousal sometimes called parentification and it's totally a form of abuse as the parent is not supposed to require the child to be thier adult partner. The parent is responsible for the childs needs, not the other way around.
And while it seems nice the way o.p. speaks about thier particular "relationship" its pretty common knowledge that this causes real life problems once the adult child grows up & has to start dealing with maladapted brain patterns. It's not cute
I got therapy to deal with mine but unfortunately I ended up repeating the pattern & choosing lame partners that were identical to parent before that happened. As with most people 😔

I have so much respect for Noel. Always have but first when he was doing twitch or even when he reads letters now he knows when the joke stops and really helps people try to find their self worth, whatever their issue is. And then hyping up Noah, his editor whose a very funny, creative and intelligent commentary channel too. Noel showing it’s not all him. He always thanks everyone behind every project. Or that he’s has difficulties and it’s ok to talk about them. That money and fame and a loving partner can still be covered by the blanket of depression. Not just sadness, clinical depression. And he’s always trying to improve himself. Never change Noel. This was written poorly, but I hope you get what I’m trying to say.

I am also in a similar point of trying to stop a bad habit and develop a good one. it's not easy but at least some days there are now successes and I'm figuring out what other things I can do to help. the most important is not going to the triggers or environment that will set you off, like her on this dman phone. she needs to like find other hobbies. she has other issues and not understanding being on the phone is causing it to grow. like can she not listen to podcasts to wean herself off of looking at a screen at least?
