- In this video, I wander through the streets of Porto, Portugal to get inside the mind of the Portuguese. I meet and talk to different people on the streets, and also ask the locals for certain phrases and sayings that are popular in their culture. I visit an old handmade brush shop (the only one in the entire Iberian Peninsula) and watch different artists and musicians paint a beautiful picture of my last days in Portugal.

I live in the north e And I was born and there is a Celtic Influence..north and north of Spain..but in appearance we have much more influence from north Africa..most of the people I know..have more of that appearance

As an Estadounidense I’m glad to see someone from here who speaks so many languages. When I travel a lot of people think of us as uninterested in other cultures and languages. I’m planning on learning portugués , Italian and French. Great videos!

My Mexican father is Spanish and Portuguese with a small amount of native American. Mother is Spanish ,Welsh, Cherokee, Irish, German. I want to visit Portugal and Spain as well as basque.

that old man doesn t know history, Portugal has been an independent country since 1143 when Spain didn't even exist. Spain resulted from the unification of 2 kingdoms, Aragon and Castillia in 1496. Portugal is the oldest country in Europe.

Gostei muito e falas muito bem. Isso e bom por Americano (eu tambem). Nao a muitos que podem com o Portugues. Ainda nao sei se gosto mais do Porto ou Lisboa mas vale a pena ver Braga, Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, Evora e outras cidades mais que ainda me ficem por visitar.

Portugal nasceu em 1139 oficialmente reconhecido País em 1143 antes destas datas a Espanha não existia como País, tão pouco Portugal. O que quer dizer que Portugal nasceu primeiro que a Espanha .

Nós Portugueses dizemos que Portugal é mais antigo que a Espanha mas não é bem a verdade. Sim Portugal é mais velho que esta España, porém o conceito de Espanha (Hispania) é bem mais antigo do que o Condado de Portucale. O mesmo Rei de Leão e primo de Dom Afonso Henriques se denominava e era reconhecido como Imperador de toda a Hispania( Espanha), reivindicando soberania até mesmo sobre as Taífas Mouras. Durante muitos seculos os Portugueses e o Reino de Portugal se considera como Espanhois e um Reino Espanhol tanto quanto Castela ou Aragão. O poeta Camões escreveu algo como " Falai-se de Castelhanos e Portugueses porque Espanhois somos todos nós( Castelhanos, Portugueses, Aragoneses). Mesmo os outros Países Europeus chamavam a todos os Reinos da Peninsula " As Espanhas" e quando Castela e Aragão se juntaram em uma União Dinastica e tentaram chamar a esse novo Reino de Reino de Espanha, o nosso Principe Perfeito Dom João II protestou porque sem Portugal não poderia existir um Reino Unificado chamado Espanha. A logica era que isso daria um Casus Bellis a Castela para conquistar o resto da Espanha e unificar todas as Espanhas em uma Só Espanha. Só no seculo XVII é que o Reino de Portugal abriu mão da indentidade Espanhola e reconheceu o Reino vizinho como a unica Espanha. Na minha humilfe opinião: foi uma tragedia que Portugal não se unificou com o resto das Espanhas mantendo as suas caracteristicas proprias e sua Lingua. Varias tentativas foram tentadas mas quiz o Destino e os Ingleses que isso nunca acontecesse.. seriamos unidos uma economia bem maior para rivalizar com os mais ricos e poderosos da União Europeia.

Essa ideia de que se fizéssemos parte da Espanha erámos mais ricos, é perfeitamente idiota. Basta ver a Galiza, uma das províncias mais pobres de Espanha.

Portugal é então atrelado numa União Dinastica de uma casa real estrangeira á Peninsula que estava mais focada em guerras inuteis no centro da Europa. Em relação aos descobrimentos: temos o exemplo ao lado, os Descobrimentos espanhois eram de responsabilidade do Reino de Castela e a soberania sobre Napoles, Sicilia ..ficava para Aragão. Não tem como não imaginar um Rei Português no trono de toda a Espanha e os Descobrimentos não irem avante como uma impreitada do Reino de Portugal. Em relação aos Ingleses é a minha opinião que era estrategia geo politica impedir a União de Portugal com o resto da Espanha. O famoso " Divide and Conquer". E onde parou a maior parte do nosso ouro do Brasil? A resposta de isso diz tudo.

Para logo depois, tecer considerações de natureza política/histórica descabidas, senão vejamos...A Península Ibérica é, isso mesmo, uma península não é nem nunca foi um país. Na Península Ibérica existem dois países, Portugal e Espanha (sendo que Portugal tem ~ o dobro da idade de Espanha). Portugal é um estado/um país/uma nação, enquanto que o estado espanhol é formado por um conjunto de regiões "autónomas" que emanam de antigos reinos que foram sendo "absorvidos/subjugados/engolidos" pelo reino de Castela. A relação entre os 2 países, ao longo da História (mesmo no presente) esteve sempre marcada pelas pretensões expansionistas de Espanha (mesmo quando não assumidas). Só os espanhóis falam "usted" e tratam os portugueses por " nuestros hermanos" enquanto os portugueses dizem "de Espanha nem bom vento nem bom casamento". Sou Portuguesa, e não reconheço qualquer parentesco com os espanhóis. Such a great video! Such lovely people! I love the way both European and Brazilian Portuguese sound, but I have a yearning to learn the European kind. I always get discouraged from learning it because I hear so many say that it is very difficult to understand when spoken. Do you have any thoughts on that? Do you feel like it took you a long time to comprehend spoken European Portuguese?
Thanks! I would recommend learning whichever Portuguese you are interested in and plan on spending the most time in. For me, Brazilian is easier to understand, but if you got an online tutor or lived in Portugal for some time and met with the people you could learn it. Good luck!
Ít's a big myth that it's difficult to understand. I mean difficult compared to what? People say things are difficult to understand only ever in COMPARISON with something else. And the only reason why brazilian portuguese would be more easy to understand would be the ammount of content out there (as well as brazilians saying they find eu variant diffcult to understand). It'd be like americans saying you shouldn't learn things in a british accent, because tis harder. Er...no.......american acecnt is just more acessible and widespread.
