What was even the point of all these acquisition?
You'd think the 3 trillion dollars corporation was rich enough to sustain all these studios to stay afloat.
I'm pretty sure that's why they sold out to Xbox Microsoft as a guarantee to keep their jobs given that they could fund all these studios because they have FU money 💵.

I thought the idea behind Game Pass was to get Day 1 exclusive games.
A lot of people cheering for the ABK acquisition did so because they wanted Call of Duty to be available day 1 on Game Pass and not have to actually buy the game.
Keep in mind too that they promised not to increase Game Pass in order to get the acquisition of ABK to go through in court.
So they lied under oath, that's actually a criminal offense if they are to increase Game Pass in the future.
They also lied about keeping all of ABK by getting rid of Toys for Bob earlier this year, which is another breach of contract of the conditions of the ABK acquisition that it could be spin-off later in the future.
How many breach of contract of the ABK acquisition will they do?
Is there anything they have ever said actually true?
You think MS is overwatching Xbox when you don't understand what even happened at Tango? Tango Gameworks was a Zenimax studio before the buy out. Xbox has no connections in Japan and Zenimax had the one. The founder / CEO and brain child of Tango, Shinji Mikami quit. Threw his team under the bus because he wants to work with young devs just getting started. He also doesn't want to do Horror anymore so no Evil Within. You do not just find a replacement for Shinji and if you have no connections in the region to start with...
Arkane Austin was a failure from the start. Arkane Studios was not big enough or making enough money to justify having that subsidiary. Dishonored was an idea pitched to Arkane by BETHESDA! It was not an Arkane idea. Then when they made Redfall, well...
I do not own a console and will not. You could gift me one and i would give it to a poor kid. I wish MS was watching over Phil Spencer. Something may get done and he would not be so "hands off".

One and two sold around 8 million copies combined (no information on digital purchases on Xbox) and earned another 121mil on Steam combined. For a AA game that is a success but companies want all games to be AAA competitive successes.

Hi-Fi Rush was a niche passion project that for older sega gamers love it because guess what, IT LOOKS LIKE COMIX ZONE ON THE GENESIS! and that's not including when prey 2017 was made and the leadership left for whatever reasons some of the better staff went with him. only 96 dev's were let go so while a tragic loss for sure in multiple ways for xbox, that doesn't also in fact make prey 2017 hi-fi rush or evil within a "bad game".
do not equate difficulty of a game to success of a game. going back to hi-fi rush one last time to prove my point , it made 3 million players and grossed revenue of approx. $23,500,000, which for a $30 game is pretty amazing, but the game had an estimated net revenue of almost $7 million, which means my dimwitted small minded friend, is the game costed around $14ish million to make. so even if not a MASSIVE cash cow making multiple millions of dollars it did in fact STILL make money more than was expected because there was no marketing, there was almost no notice for the PS5 port later (and lets face it how many people bought and played it on PS), and it was shadow dropped which means that's ton of money saved on all those fronts.
you also seemed to forget ghostwire: tokyo was made in parallel with hi-fi rush and hi-fi rush won several awards. so you tell me by what stretch of the imagination constitutes as a "banger" for you. maybe the game and the ones this studio produced weren't for you. fine there's nothing wrong with that. but don't equate YOUR tastes to the general populace because if some games were never taken a chance on and made such as bloodborne, we might never have had sequels that later came. (IE: Elden Ring and the birth of the soulslike genre)
so yes the studio didn't make money hand over fist to "keep the lights on" as it were. but every game they made was in fact a success i don't think anyone can argue that fact.
I worked for XBOX and Matt almost ruined my career. Long story short I was in London, we got chatting about the service and pricing in our country. He seemed genuinely concerned and instructed me to mail him on my return home, I did as he requested and, one week later I was pulled into a hearing then reprimanded for mailing a VP. I was given a stern warning never to do it again or I would be fired. Matt the entire time never said a word and let it happen under his watch.
My passion died in that room that day.

Has anyone thought that even if there was a video game collapse, we still have to deal with this in every other part of the entertainment industry? It doesn't need a video game collapse, it needs an economic collapse.
And the problem that comes with an economic collapse is that it won’t just be a couple hundred people losing their jobs, it would be 10s of thousands of people. That’s why I find the people saying that the industry needs to crash because of the layoff both stupid and funny. @@ToastBOMB That's true, but this system where inflation must always increase year by year (which is cumulative btw) just isn't sustainable whatsoever. The FED/Central Banks are trying to basically nullify the business cycle. Ultimately I don't think that is possible in the long run.
I've enjoyed Game Pass but if they make it suck or they make it too expensive, I'm always ready to say bye bye.

I only subscribe to one if at all and then unsubscribe immediately so I have a month. A couple of months later I go to the next one and watch 1 or 2 series. More often than not I'll get an email giving me a discount, too. Easy farm.
that's why i never subscribe to anything. i only pay for the standalone product, and only if its on steam or GOG.
otherwise i pirate it, or buy it on second hand, if its available for legacy consoles. (PS3 and under).

Man, this is so unfortunate. I have a feeling that the PS5 and the Xbox S/X are the last consoles I own. There was nothing in this generation that is making excited for the future. Many games are incomplete or broken, prices keep going up, devs are being shut down or let go, etc. There is nothing that is keeping me in this space.

I'm right there with you. So far this has been the most disappointing generation of video games. There's been 1 game I was excited for that turned out to be a good game to me. Neither Sony or Xbox has any games I want to play, need to buy, or that I'm excited for. It's all bland boring garbage and no Stellar Blade didn't look good to me and no Hell Divers doesn't look good to me. They both look like absolutely boring games and they're the best thing Sony has put out. Killing bugs and some hair sword having woman is just boring to me. I tend not to buy games with a female protagonist because I'm not a female there for the game isn't for me.

The Tango closure makes no sense to me. Looks like the suits won.
Yeah, Tango was there one and only foothold into Japan.
They could give them a budget to grow, open multiple Tango studios which would only increase their sales in Japan, even if its just on PC or PS because thats the market.

Tango has had issues before they were acquired.
Wild what happens when it takes close to 100 people 5 years to make a game that doesn't sell and has no engagement on any platform its released on. Also didn't help that Ghostwire didn't do well commercially or critically and the studio's founder left. According to Shinji, Zenimax wanted to shut Tango down for a while and only kept it open to give him a studio.
Their head dev and a bunch of other devs left the studio makes plenty of sense

I'm seriously thinking of getting a gaming rig, but my country / location doesn't make it easy (I'm looking into getting a Steam Deck).
PS games are now coming to PC (Helldivers 2 is a good example).
Xbox games are already there.
Switch games run better there.
Emulation is king there.

And you won't have to upgrade too often, unless our tech jumps for like 1000 years, but that's yet remain to be seen. You won't have to pay for battlepass, just your internet service, since online games will most likely be free. Instead of having to pay both battlepass and your internet.
I was a lifelong console person until 2016 when I built my first PC. There's just no way you can go back after being on PC

The problem starts at top. Satya Nadella, the guy behind "Windows as a Service" wants "Xbox as a Service".
i haven't paid for GP in the last 2 years because I rack up Microsoft points and use them towards the subscription . I own a Steam Deck and a Series X and happy with both. Whatever I save from game pass , I use to buy Steam Games on sale. Has been working great for me. So far at least!

The fact the Prototype games aren't even now back compatible is insane. They own the IP. Just press the button to do it so people who own 360 copies don't need to purchase the HD versions
What's happening is very simple: This isn't Xbox's Phil anymore, they are paying the price of bringing so much revenue to the company that fast, now Microsoft is looking at them more closely, watching their every move. The dream Phil had was like Professor Xavier's dream... is long gone.

I have learned in the last months that DEI is the most important thing for XBox and not making, marketing, and selling games.
If I was a betting man: The closures were specifically due to making sure there's a big enough dev team to push Fallout 5 within the next 3-4 years. I can also promise you it will probably be like Fallout 76, to capitalize on TV show skins and such, and they'll be rolling out a slow down and eventual ceasing of development on 76. They also want to make sure that FO5 come out before either the next season or season 3 of the show, due to popularity.
I don't know about the bringing down Fallout 76. That game has jumped in players and is pretty healthy right now.
If anything, they are going to start ramping that game up again.

Just recently I cancelled my Game Pass PC and Console subscriptions. I found that most of the older games, where cheaper and played better via physical media, and the newer games I wanted to play had better editions via Steam.

I was genuinely considering buying my brother an Xbox so he could play some of the newer titles as they were releasing, but just over the past few days Microsoft has basically confirmed that that money would be better spent buying him a Steam Deck.

If it wasn't for Gamepass, I never would have discovered Dead Space, Yakuza, SpiderHeck, or Vampire Survivors. But I stopped using it because I was tired of constantly paying for games I was playing, and just bought them instead.
Given they increased the price and may do it again, I'm glad to have gotten out early.

I play on Xbox and about 2 months ago got my first pc and it’s really good. That being said I still play on my Xbox for halo and the Xbox ecosystem but everyday feels like there’s less and less of a reason to play on it :(

Not really. Installed Diablo 4 five times on my pc and it crashed every time and was not playable. Gamepass /battle net don't work together without errors. Installed it on my series x and I never had any issues. ☮️

Let me play devils advocate for a moment; When the founder and creator of Tango and The Evil Within left he took all the really talented devs with him, after that the studio became a shallow shell of it’s former self.
It’s the same with Arkane Austine, that studio has been bleeding talent for years, maybe around 10% of the really talented original devs was left the rest was already gone, the studio was also a shallow shell of it’s former self.
I’m not saying this to try and explain or excuse Microsoft’s behavior and decision, but what i am trying to do is to add some context to this whole situation, remember this is a business and we all know how important real talent is, just take a look at BioWare.
I don’t think this situation is fully black and white like everyone is making it out to be, i think Tango and Arkane Austin wasn’t savable.
That’s my two sense to this whole situation.
All that said, it’s a damn shame, both studios have given me countless hours of enjoyment and i will surely miss the kind of games they created.

Well, I have felt this for the past 2 years. And was worried about this when the ABK acquisitions was in full swing. Satya Nadella CEO of Microsoft needs to get profit on Xbox. Just as Bob Allan Iger on Disney plus has cut back on content, and now for the first time make profit on Disney plus. Well, I've gone hard into acting once again and have a great time doing it. And right now it's more fun to watch TV series and movies
I'm not concerned about Game Pass going up in price. I can always cancel it which I've already done before anyway. I'm absolutely concerned about the future or indeed the lack of a future some of these studios won't have. Under the most incompetent corporate structure in the entire world.

I've been gaming on Xbox for 20 years, always seem to take two steps forward three steps back.
I dont think anyone at microsoft realizes that there prob a lot of people that either loaded up years of gamepass and/or just have it instead of just Live and the big thing is weve had gamepass for the past few years before starfield when there was basically nothing released on gamepass from them for like 2 years. So theres some backpay that we need. Dont expect to go on a 2 year drought, release a couple mid games and then be like “but why is the number not skyrocketing??”

I'm not going to defend the closure of these studios but, a report just came out that these devs just the other day brought game ideas to higher ups...which tells me the studios haven't been working on anything for the past year.

Maybe they were working on those ideas that were pitched thanks to that year of work? Maybe even with early builds?
Not defending them, but I would be curious to see just how many people were actually let go. I’d like to think many of them were shuffled to other teams or studios within MS where they were more needed. Who knows though.

The other 2 studios I know nothing about. And mostly all the devs from the 4 studios are being put to work at other studios to prioritize games already in development...maybe even to help speed along the creation of Fall Out 5

They spend way too much money on the acquisition of Activision, 70 Billion is a lot of money. They thought their gamepass subscription would recuperate the cost but it just didn't. Also people played the gamepass game for free, but the money doesn't go directly to the developers, sadly.

All prices are going up for subs, Xbox is making an insane amount of money, wasn't it as profitable as Windows? It seems like they're shutting down smaller Bethesda studios to work on the bigger projects like Fallout 5 and TES VI, didn't they just say they're doubling output for those games? They haven't increased prices yet, maybe voices can be heard. Really want to see Xbox continuing to be competitive. We'll see what happens, it just seems like consoles are on their last leg though. Could they possibly doing this now to get the bad news out of the way before their showcase? IDK, it's just weird all around. I kinda feel bad for Phil. He's handicapped by the heads.

Funny thing, as a WoW player, there is already controller support. Blizzard has been working on controller support since before Shadowlands. They learned that where are already players that play with controllers (a few of my guild mates play with controller) via all of the mods so they implemented the support even more in Dragonflight. My god, major L's from Microsoft right after Sony had major L's.....what's going on within this industry.
I'm not angry. I simply stepped away. A little upset I paid $500 for an Xbox Series X that has not been unplugged for more than a year. And it's PS5s turn. Un-subscribed to PS Plus. Not giving them $80.

However, Xbox has just not been improving at all, especially with everything they have, they seem to not know what the consumers or now the devs want. They desperately need a reset to reinvent themselves and their identity in the gaming industry

Gamepass doesn't have less content because those studios got shut down. Actually content is going up.

@@alokrates3959 For as long as Gamepass is available. All Xbox studios games go in there and there's new monthly content also. It's not always big AAA games but it's content for those that like smaller titles.
Star Wars Jedi Survivor is in there for this month. Gonna get Hellblade II in a couple of weeks.

With Tango game works I'm not disappointed, reason being after they were bought myamoto or whatever his name is, left and took the greater talents of Tango with him,took the money that they got from Microsoft and started their own studio,so I would've closed that studio also,because myamoto gave xbox the middle finger,and he's the real talent

This is the thing. I wanna like them, because I really trusted under Phil they could really do something. But big companies always end up acting like big companies. Starting with the useless MFs in charge to the shittiest decisions that get in the way of people that could actually do something. I really wanna love them, even tho I play on PC. But then this happens and it's just demoralizing.
Hot Take - Microsoft is putting their eggs in the COD basket. Hi Fi was a great game, but I do not think it sold well. I think the CEOs at Microsoft saw that and said axe Tango. In June they will drop all of the old CODs into gamepass, big event ramping up to COD release this year, after their showcase will raise the price of gamepass.
Gamepass is just not sustainable for the industry. How do you think the developers are supposed to make money if no one is actually buying it

Because Microsoft literally told journalists that they weren't just gonna close these studios if they failed to meet expectations. They were supposed to be given more chances. Also, Microsoft forced to release redfall, which, as we can see, made them meet their end... also, releasing Hi-fi rush on GP and then getting disappointed in the sales results is the biggest wtf moment out of all of this. Microsoft has themselves to blame for that.

Ironically I think Xbox would probably be in a better place now had the Activision deal not gone through.
The top suits at MS didn't really start getting involved in decisions until they dropped the $70 billion. Now I have a feeling it's all eyes on the Xbox division and they will be pushing Phil and the team for a return on that outlay, quickly.
Sad day for the industry but this is what happens with corporate consolidation, hope this is the last time we see it, but I have a feeling there's more to come

Boy remember when Alex called out everyone who said that Game bass is bad for xbox , That game pass would hurt games sales on the platform and wouldn't help them boost revenues and make them more successful ? I sure do remember , I called it as many as other Gamers who saw it miles ahead . Game pass ain't Netflix and will never be .
My 2 year GamePass Ultimate just expired on May 1st. I’ll stick with GamePass Core 12 month for online play. My backlog is 168 games waiting to be played.
I honestly think the best way they could go about Call of duty is it put all the old games on game pass and whatever the new game is will still be pay to play, then after a year and the next call of duty releases the previous call of duty can be added to game pass. Rinse repeat. If they just don’t add any call of duties to GP at all I’m genuinely gonna cringe. Like that’s the whole reason we were excited-
That's what a number of people were wanting/anticipating for but they may end up fumbling even that.
