  • The forth trip of the day and what I would call the most HELLFIRE trip of the day was on the excellently preserved Midland Red C5 4780 (780GHA). I have always liked Midland Red’s with their unique body style and engine sound as everything was “home built” with Midland Red. 4780 performed brilliantly as well flying down lanes and around corners and with a crash gearbox that isnt easy.

    Nice civilised-sounding vehicle.

Nice short throw on the gear lever....

Well, its short all right but I don't see anything nice about it. Looks heavy, balky and obstructive. the trouble with a very short throw is that its not always clear if the next ratio has been engaged or not, as is all too clearly demonstrated here.

Is hard to imagine this bus to 100 mph, the story tells that in 1965 was withdrawn turbocharger, I would hear that sound, get an idea of the sound turbo..Gran machine ..

Thanks for the info; reminds me of a coach I was on many years ago (70s) in Majorca' that had the top 2 gears back to front - probably a Spanish make.

Seems 3rd & 4th are back to front (or is that 4th & 5th if there is a crawler 1st?). Nice short precise shift.

Why were the turbochargers removed? To be brought to a stand on what appears to be a modest rise in the road suggests they are pretty gutless without them
