Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the timings in the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below to help you navigate the video.
In this video we try out some alternatives to a traditional guitar amp head and ask how they feel and sound.
You might need such a product as a spare or emergency contingency should your main amp go down; you might want to base a (physically) tiny rig around one; or you may want to augment your existing setup with wet/dry or even wet/dry/wet capabilities. We discuss of the above.
Any one of these units is small enough to be mounted on your pedalboard… as long as you have a speaker cable long enough to reach your cabinet.
We try each of the tiny amps with three common types of front end/OD: a standard overdrive pedal; a dedicated valve preamp; and a non-valve pedal which is a mix of the two.
PLEASE NOTE: The Vox MV50AC gets some criticism for not having much clean headroom. It should be noted that we're using it at the 16-ohm / 12.5 watt power setting. For the full 50 watts and (presumably) more clean headroom, you need to use a 4-ohm speaker load.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE: This video is NOT about speaker emulation or playing direct. It’s about using pedal-sized alternatives to an amp head. You still require a speaker for what we’re talking about today.
Thank you for watching… Please enjoy the video!

Guys, what can I say, I've played guitar for FORTY years but my real amp & effects education began with That Pedal Show. It was like stumbling around a dark room! The amount of gear I've been through & discarded is immense. I so look forward to Fridays now to catch the latest show. You are legends

I theenk it's high time this subject gets revisited, as there are now a lot more products in this category, as well as cab sim pedals and IR loaders in pedal format. Hotone alone has single and dual channel models. Orange has a stomp amp as well, and I expect something from Tech 21 any minute now. It's a very hot topic amongst us old fahrts suffering from roadie spine, and not for nothing, you fellas could probably wring an episode or three out of ultralights and fly rigs in general.

You should have mentioned, that the power supply of the Magnum 44 is as twice as big and heavy as the "pedal" itself. Many guitarists may get the impression that they can power it together with the other effects on their board with a multi output supply. Besides that it´s a great device.

The Magnum is a missed opportunity: not quite loud enough for a loud live band situation without mic. Given the big supply, why not make the pedal a bit bigger and 100w?

The problem as I see it with these little micro amps is that the new generation will never learn to appreciate the joy of lugging 40Kg speaker cabinets and valve heads with transformers the size of houses about. We are in danger of spawing a generation of players who will be barely strong enough to tune their guitars.

My personal favourite is a 4x12 Fane-equipped HiWatt cabinet. I strongly suspect they are teak around a cast iron frame.
Great show. I did notice at one point you referred to the tone out of one of the microamps as "boxy". I think that can be said of a lot of modern amps (of any size) especially the DSP variety. The Seymour Duncan was pretty decent however. Easily the best of the bunch here.

I know the Orange Pedal Baby isn’t pedal sized, but I feel that it blows these units out of the water, and it’s much more affordable. The class A/B makes it sound and feel more tube like, these other guys sound too sterile. I know that they’re not meant to be used without some sort of preamp, but it’s important whether or not your power amp sounds good on its own.

I have the Amp 1. I got it for my pedals so I only use the clean sound. It definitely sounds and feels like a tube amp.
I use a Vertex Steel String Clean Drive which is meant to make a Fender tube amp sound like a Dumble Steel String Singer amp. I can not say it makes the Amp 1 sound like Dumble. lol

I have carried an EHX caliber (sic) 22 in the back of my Lonestar Special for the last few years. If the amp goes down that's always there ready to be plugged into the speaker. I've never had to use it but I know it sounds good enough to get through a gig with the pedal board and I don't have to drag around a spare valve amp. If a speaker blows then I've modded a couple of the monitors with a switch that takes out the tweeter and basically gives me a 12" closed back speaker I can point at the audience and get by. NEVER GIG WITHOUT A BACKUP! It's meant to be entertainment, not making a noise is a different kind of fun....

You, guys, you're hitting hard on us, mere junkyes!!! I was waiting that video for so long. I have a 22 Caliber EH (the little bro of the M44), and it's a beast. Actually, I've purchased a M44, alredy. It has a kind of OD, very natural, and it's very powerfull. But, the problem is on the preamps you guys show on the video. Those ones and others like Kindmans, hell! Thank you for that so informative and enterteing show.

Hi guys. I have the MV50 AC and the MV50 Clean. The idea for the AC is to mimic the actual amp (ie the AC30) at 4ohms full 50 watts. The idea behind the Clean is to be used in the way you need to for this demo. You can turn the clean up to the full gain and volume and not get any breakup of the amp at all. It is clean with full headroom up to 4 ohms 50’watts flat out. Btw, I have tried the AC against my friends hand wired AC30 head with a 2x12 vox cab side by side comparison and it stack up pretty well. Both amps break up similarly and within the bounds of reason when it comes to volume in a small space were close. We were shocked how close it actually was to be honest. I bought both in a deal with a pair of the little 8” 8 ohm speakers for a stereo and wet wet dry home practice rig. Cost total £250. They’re loud enough to play a pub and compete with a drummer if you use a 4x12 at 4ohms, and together in stereo they’re very loud flat out. I also use them for recording - they produce an awesome sound at low levels and the headphone output on the back can be treated with speaker emulation impulses in the software - sounds very good. I have pre-amp pedals 1962x and Marshall Guv’nor and the sound literally changes to those well known Marshall amps or close enough for anyone to think they actually are. The difference between these amps and the power amps you tested them with is they already have a preamp so you can use ordinary pedals or preamps that can go into the front end. I’d definitely try the clean one if you do this again but test it at 4ohms to get the full 50W - you may have a different view of them. Great show as usual. Thanks.

Traynor put out a 25-watt pedal amp 7 or 8 years ago called the Quarter Horse. Sounds quite good, has channel switching, EQ, and some decent built-in effects. You can pick them up really cheap on the used market and Traynor stuff lasts forever.

Korg's (who have owned Vox for 25 years now) Nutube, is not really new technology at all. It's just a re-purposed vacuum fluorescent display (VFD), which used to be used on things like stereos, electric and microwave ovens, all sorts of displays. They are a true triode, but the anode is a phosporescent coating on the inside of the glass, and it functions in a similar way to a cathode ray tube with it's individual pixels, but in the VFD's case, rather than pixels, entire icons were silk-screened onto the glass - be it 7 segment displays, little clocks for the timer setting on your microwave, or a microphone for the karaoke setting on your stereo. These could be printed in different colours too.
However, this technology has fallen out of favour due to cost, bulk, and requirement for high voltage (like ~30-ish volts DC), where modern LCD displays are now cheaper, can show any image (not just the ones silkscreened), and will operate from 3.3VDC.
Korg can get the "Nutubes" for a good price because its a very mature product at the end of its lifetime, the manufacturing setup costs have long been amortised, and the factory (Noritake) would otherwise be closing down.
The Nutubes have been slightly redesigned for better amplification and lower microphonics (which weren't of concern in VFD applications), but they're not really the most practical of amplifier tubes. They don't socket, they're significantly more fragile (have a read of Korg's application notes about padding them in foam and suspending the circuitboard they're attacted to within the chassis), and they have some weird properties as amplifiers.
Still, interesting, but I don't think they'll actually make much of a splash in the market for those reasons, and will fade into obscurity.

+Greg Robinson Interesting, thanks for the clarification Greg. A few people have said we were too harsh on the MV. Mick here - I don't think we were at all. We say more that once that it's able to sound great, depending on the context. One thing we will always dislike is marketing, however. Or at least we'll ask how true the marketing claims can be. This thing can sound great in the right environment. Cheers!

    • @gregkrobinson
      @gregkrobinson Před 7 lety +1

I don't think you guys were too harsh either. Marketing doesn't need to make outrageous claims, if the product is good, it should stand on its own merits - which I think the MV did. No need to be silly about it!

I tried the clean with the MV50, I went for the AC because it was louder, and louder with a clean(ish) signal. The Clean is a superb Jazz amp, but if you just want a loud power stage, then I don't know if I would have gone for the Vox stuff... On occasions I just use a boost pedal alone and the amp will do the rest (for Blues/Rock gigs) so it made sense for me.
