In this video Daniel and Mick are discussing the practicalities and benefits of using lower power guitar amps to get great tones at real-world volumes.
We’re also responding to a question we asked regularly: ‘Can you use some normal/smaller amps to get good sounds, instead of the really powerful/expensive/boutique stuff?’
Yes we can!
So we’re taking a Fender Blues Junior - probably the most widely used 15-watt valve amp in the world - and a 5-watt Marshall Class 5 as the basis for our tones, on the end of a bunch of common effect types.
The pedals we’re using today:
• Origin Effects Cali76 Compact Deluxe
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2uVGMBL
USA: bit.ly/323rheM
Australia: bit.ly/2ZA9MfE
• Lovepedal Vibronaut - no longer made
• Wampler Tumnus

USA: bit.ly/3yJjLlu
Australia: bit.ly/2Vy2v1q
• Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem - no longer made
• Analog Man King Of Tone

• Chase Bliss Audio Warped Vinyl

USA: bit.ly/3dZ3Y8A
Australia: bit.ly/2JxcATd
• Electro-Harmonix Memory Man 1100-TT

USA: imp.i114863.net/GWqeE
• MXR M300
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2hLvESX

All pedals are going into both amps (yes, wet/dry would sound fantastic too).

Mick is playing a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster. Dan is playing a Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard and Gretsch Players Edition 6118T Anniversary.
As mentioned above, amps are a Fender Blues Junior III and a Marshall Class 5 (original version, without the low-power mode).

Mick: We will get on to transistor amps, we will.
Dan: You will.
Classic
and please try the budget/starter amps to. build a must have starters set with amp and 2 ore 3 pedals
BEDROOM SOUNDS! That's a great idea for a video. the difference between bedroom and stage sounds... bedroom between small, medium, and large band settings....
Fully agree, that would be extremely useful!!!
of course now that I think about it "bedroom sounds" could be something else entirely
Dan should bring out his hot pink Heavy Metal Strat and the Peavey Bandit for this.
agre!!!!
Yes please!
'Do you see these things...it's a potentiometer!' - Just glorious. That made my day as The Pedal Show always does every Friday afternoon.
because of you guys, I will never be able to save up for a house. SUCH a great show!
Tbone T ROFL
How many of you would like a "That Amp Show"? Thumbs up if you'd watch that sister series from Mick, Daniel & company - I know I would!
Quiet, you! I plan to be the “Dan” in such a venture: I just need to find a “Mick.”
Haha - I look forward to checking it out. Hopefully you can deliver!
Johan Segeborn has got that one covered...
Greg Murray ohgodyeah
I need another CZcams guitar show like I need another hole in my head. But yes, I would watch.
Love this show. It's my Friday ritual, like Thrones on Monday.
Keep up the good work!
Next to the awesome sounds you guys create using just a couple of - some albeit pretty unobtainable - pedals and simple amps, the huge enthusiasm and delight you express doing it is very inspiring! Such a lot of fun to watch, every time!
A setup like this is amazing for studio recording. Especially the really wet sound you guys got around the middle of the video. No one would ever expect you're using little combos!
This show, and a cup of coffee, make my Friday's perfect!
strongly agree.
+1
Just got a cup of joe, thanks kor
Think i gotta get the T-shirt for the cream on the cake!...Great show chaps! 👍🏻✨🎸
+毛亭婷 seeing as you plugged an ad into our appreciation of Mick and Dan, I'll happily buy your pedal.
Haha. I feel validated! Being a Class 5 owner I can honestly say it is an amazing amp. A little muddy, but you can tweak it. Not sure why Marshall discontinued them.
What I love about really small amps is that you can crank them all the way up on the clean channel, and get awesome old overdrive without crazy volime. I did this with a Gibson Les Paul Studio and some 5 watt Marshall tube combo at my school, and it sounded brilliant.
Great show, Mick and Dan! I always look forward to your new releases. Keep it up, I appreciate what you do.
this video makes me love my class 5 even more
I have a Vox ac15c1 and it is a killer for tone and volume. I play all my gigs with it at bars and fest! Mic it and it is killer!!
Thank you so much for this really "interesting" video. Once again I have learnt huge amounts from you both. This is a great video for those of us on limited budgets, I cannot thank you enough. Brilliant work guys!!
Much love and respect for the both of you. Keep doing what you are doing gentleman, this is one of the best resource for players who care about the quality of their tone.
Cheers!
I love my class 5 incredible sounding amp
Hey guys.....love the show! This video in particular resonates with me as I have played guitar for 20 years, but only at home. I have continually downsized my amps over the years to try to get a better tone at a more reasonable volume. I had a 40 watt Mesa DC-5, then 22 watt Fender Deluxe Reverb, and finally a 15 watt Fender Blues Jr. Now I am looking in the 5 watt or less market and would love for you guys to consider doing a show on them. I am leaning towards the Vox AC4-1 12. Keep up the great work!!!
i cant see me going from a deluxe reverb to a blues jr. the blues jr doesnt sound that great to me.
Perfect guys! Thanks again for starting my-and all the rest of the PedalHeads weekend right. Cheers!
You guys are the best show on the internets. Your knowledge of all things guitars is incredible. But my favorite is listening to the jamming and improv at the end. Let's have an episode of that!
You probably have had this asked a thousand times...So I apologize to ask this. Mick, what kind of pickups are in your strat. I love the show. I was turned on to you by "in the blues". Thank you for all the videos.
One of the best videos for great tone. I especially liked this one guys. Mick is win FIRE lately - those tasty passages are just killer!! But then Dan comes in with the Les Paul and throws down some tough-ass tones as well. Glad I have one of each (Strat, Tele, Paul).
I’ve been rocking a Barber compressor for several years and couldn’t agree more - it should be subtle and not “in your face”. Love what you guys do - keep it up!
Thanks for the video guys. The Blues Junior III was my first tube amp and I am loving it.
Great to see the Gretsch again. What an instrument!
The top on that Les Paul is absolutely gorgeous
ya'll have come a long way over the years! I'd love to see a retrospective, "reelin in the years", of that pedalshow's development!
Great video... You got some massive tones from those tiny amps. For people who say its impossible tiny amps give "boxy" tone.......just watch this video!
I rarely gig anymore and mostly use a small amp at home and at small party's.
This was very instructional. I have new found respect for a compressor too!
I first saw this video ages ago and thought, “Well, that’s nice and all, but I don’t see me ever using two amps in my (acoustic) trio. Now, I’m about to embark on adding some electric to the group and had a friend (and local guitar tech) build me a 5 watt tube amp (a Fender Champ clone) and it... is... AWESOME! The Marshall Class 5 is my next choice because it’s such a different sound. It won’t happen soon because of finances (the amp itself, extra microphone, and accessories). Is there another amp I should be looking at to pair with my tweed “Champ”?
Recently added a Marshall class 5 to my Blues Junior as I was completely inspired by your Wet / Dry video, I've got all the compression and overdrive to both with the wet signal through the Fender to quote Dan it's a "killer sound"!. Thanks again for lots more ideas, particularly handling the bottom end.
I wanted/needed a new, quieter amp for a home-away-from-home, and I really tried to buy a Morgan AC20 or MVP23, but there is a flavor there, and perhaps it is the class A thing, that just doesn't sit right with my ears. I walked away from about 3 hours of playing those amps spread over two days, stopped at another store and bought a Blues Junior after about 10 minutes. And I left with a huge smile on my face. I have "better" amps at home, but the Blues Junior was the first valve amp that I bought and sold years ago, and it still sounds great. Thanks for showcasing a broad array of products and helping us get the most out of them. (Now, to purchase another Tube Screamer, like the old one that I sold years ago...)
My goodness, this show is wonderful! So helpful. Plowing through all of your videos right now (instead of reading for my exams). Lots of love to you boys!
thanks matey ;)
Small amps?! Small amp is mine Laney Cub10. :-D
Another idea for a show... and a little off the show's topic but, as you're always on about it, amp combinations!!! What amps work together as a pair.
They did a video like this on their old channel: DanielTheGigRig.
Will have to check it out.
Thanks for the info!
I'm proud to say that I've been here since the beginning! Mick,I had a Strat just like your once.
I started to watch the show as a way to get to sleep, i've got insomnia. I thought a technical conversation made me sleep. Damned you guys, now I can't really sleep cuz it's too good. Greetings from brazil.
I just want to know what overdrive and distortion pedal Dan would choose for a Blues Junior?
Me too! Especially for BJ lacquered tweed
Ocd, tc mojomojo, rockaway, tc dark matter. Boss Blues driver, ep booster, tc spark, jackson prism all work well with FBJ and the blues senior
transistor amps with metal zones, 2 birds 1 stone :)
Best rig ever
Fri-Joy again! Didn't think it was possible but you guys are making my ears " smarter". Keep up the great work!
Excellent episode as always... In my experience i found out that if you pass the signal through an overdrive or a boost pedal which has a voltage doubler (example: keeley katana boost) it makes a great difference as it enhances and widens your original signal, giving your sound a huge headroom. You can try it for your bedroom volume too. Works wonders!
Mick, I'm sure you've mentioned this numerous times in the past, but what pickups do you have in that Strat? I'm super-envious of your tone.
i'm pretty sure mick uses a stock american strat !
Interesting as I also have a stock American, but it doesn't sound quite as nice. It's not bad, mind you, but Mick's Strat seems to have that extra "something" that mine lacks.
+TsiratiugZ Hello! It's an American Vintage '62, around 15 years old or so. The pickups are Seymour Duncan Antiquity and the saddles are KTS Titanium. Otherwise its stock. I think the pickups Fender is using in the current American Vintage guitars are as good as anything by anyone.
After that, my personal opinion is that it HAS to be nitrocellulose, have a vintage vibrato with a quality steel block. Light body, biggish neck. That's where Strats sound the best to my ears. And then I'll play a Squier that I love... Go figure as the Americans say. :0)
+Martin Chalot Nope. Can't do the two-point bridge and some other stuff. :0)
No, his Stratocaster is a 1962 reissue.
I want a Vox. Full stop. D'you recon an AC15-C1 or AC4-C1 for ocasional gigging but mainly home use in a flat....
+Marc Piechowicz Depends on the gigging situation Mark. The AC4 is a very specific thing - great fun and good sounding, but they're very definitely in 'small amp' territory. Bit boxy and small sounding (which might be exactly what you want).
However, the 15 is the better all rounder we think. Sounds bigger and fuller. You can turn it down for the flat, and it'll shout loud enough for most small band situations.
You need to play them both really - you may prefer one instantly. Cheers!
Marc Piechowicz Try out the ac10c1 as well! Great sounding amp, clean and compressed.
Will Casada I looked at the ac10 but it had no amp/preamp volume if I remember so no good. The ac15 has both so hopefully can crank out a bit of crunch at lower volume for home use. I don't like near a decent shop so I can't try ( Cornwall )
That Pedal Show Cheers guys, unfortunately I don't have a decent shop near me so can't try out either so I'm buying and researching online. At the moment I'm going for the 15. I order in a couple of days....Thanks for the help
Have you tried a Night Train 15w combo? Love mine.
Compression as a clean solo boost? Absolutely brilliant! Will be trying this at gigs!
Hey guys, I play through a Laney Cub 10, and this has to be the most useful video you guys have posted. I feel like I now have a bass line for comparing my own tone and the wonderful, beautiful and always awesome tones that you two pump out in every video. Thanks again for all your work.
+Sebastian Bradilovic Thank you Sebastian!
I reckon Mick should grow a beard!
YES!!!
+Iggytommy Made from his arm hair lol!
Daniel & Mick, if you're doing something more with budget amps in the future you should REALLY look into the new Fender Bassbreaker amps. I got a 007 and it's absolutely sensational. I stilll love my Carr Rambler, but in many ways the Bassbreaker matches it- Even puts it to shame, especially taking the price into consideration. It's crazy much value. Just a tip.
Later dudes. Thanks for all the great videos!
+Bjørn Lodvar Larsen I like the BBs very, very much (Mick). Fender has done an awesome job with them.
That Pedal Show the BBs or a blues jr??
LOVE you two. amazing info! thanks for all the hard work.
The Cali76 sounds so tasty, especially running into the Tumnus!
My band mate uses a Blues Junior for guitar and pedal steel and loves it.
Another great video, as always!
Please make some coffee mugs!!! ;)
+Alex Farran it's about time, right?
You guys never use a Carvin V16 when you use little amps. It sounds totally different than the other Carvin amps in the Vintage Series. By "different" I mean "Way Better"! It is USA made, and has tone far beyond a Blues Jr for around the same price. It made me slap my Mesa and Marshall in the face!
You mean Crate V16? (Palomino) If you do, BIG THUMBS UP! Ive been gigging with my V16 for about 2 years now and that little fella KILLS! Swapped out the v2 preamp for a 12AU7 which cut out a lot of gain and turned it beautifully clean. I crank the master up and hit it with an OCD, Keeley BD2 or Fulltone '70 for dirt...sounds fabulous every night!
Cheers guys. I've been looking forward to this one for a while.
Very excited, thanks to this vid I'm getting a Marshall class 5 tomorrow, my first valve amp :D
Isaac Howell it's a loud bitch ,isn't she?
Those amps are almost as easy to get hold of as the AnalogMan King of Tone o_O
These amps are everywhere
there's also the tone city king of blues...
+Michael Smith I looked everywhere for a class 5 and couldn't find it. Maybe it's just where I live.
it's kind of half way between boutique
because it's a simple circuit just labor isn't cheap or as good value as with a 100w or so i hear
they don't make em anymore, that's why - and most of the people who have em, don't want to sell.
But would leaving the EU make my pedalboard sound better or worse? 😜
+Piplodocus Worse. Or at least more expensive. :0)
+That Pedal Show that's my thinking! I'd have been a lot less likely to have had about £700 to give TGR earlier this year too if we left. Anyway, should probably end any political commentary before Hitler gets mentioned as we all know the direction CZcams comments often take... ;-)
Piplodocus - did Hitler play guitar?
Love your videos...couple of boys having fun, but skilled and knowledgeable at the same time! I would personally love it if you guys would do a video with the new Fender Bassbreaker line. I've heard good things and tried a couple with good impressions. Thanks for the great work!
Wow! The Cali-Tumnus-MM combo at the end was amazing! You two should put "Overdrive for your Clean Sound" on a T-Shirt!
Seriously guys, stop using the Carpe Diem or tell us how to buy one. Or better yet, sell them in your online store.
I agree... That thing sings!
www.guitarheart.com.br/pedal-overdrive-para-guitarra-fire-custom-shop-carpe-diem this is the only thing i could find, i thought the same thing you did!
damn...it says its unavailable now.... sorry dude...
They had one for sale for like an hour off another thread in their own webstore. That was nice of them.
I use a Fulltone '70 into an MXR Carbon Copy (set very slightly indeed), into a 15 watt Blues Junior, doesn't matter which guitar I use, it's like a lovely woman with big boobs.
Richard Harris You must've gotten the right mod or something. 😂😂😂. I've heard of squishy sounds but...lmao at your comment.
this was sweet! one of the best tones they have had in this channel!
Thanks guys, loving your 'tutorials'. Can go off to work now, happy!
They should redo this with less expensive pedals. The pedals cost more then the small amps they are using.
Get yourself a Blues Jr, and the new 15 watt Bluesbreaker. $1000(ish) and you can play anywhere and anything your little heart wants.
Edit: Bassbreaker. Not Bluesbreaker.
Stupid trademarks lol
Have you tried a stereo rig with them?
Now i want a 15w bluesbreaker!
I own the BJR, Bassbreaker 007, Marshall Class 5 (and about 10 other tube amps).... After extensive testing of the Bassbreaker 15 against the Bassbreaker 007, I prefer the 007 (and the Class 5). The 007 gets a better breakup whereby the Bassbreaker 15 just seems a bit sterile... unless you really need the extra volume...
I agree, the Bassbreaker and a BJR, and you can cover 99% of tones you may want. Bassbreaker is that good. But I am not ever getting rid of my Class 5.
+Tricko if you had to pick between the 007 and the class 5, what would you pick and why?
thanks for all you guys do.. i really enjoy watching.
I have a lacquered tweed BJ with Jensen speaker. Playing it with fender strat with 69 custom shop pickups and it sounds amazing. Playing it on gigs in smaller clubs with volume at 6 and master at 3.5 and its loud enough. Could crank it much much more. To me it's the best Amp for smaller gigs up to 100 people venues. Need to try master on 12 though, since many people say the Amp sounds best then.
may the name drop horn never die
Another interesting two amp combo is a Trans and a valve .... due to the different responses. Love the show....keep up the great work.
Always look forward to this show!!!
Lately, for both rehearsal and gigging, I've been using a trusty Vox AC4. It can fit in your suitcase for flying, and with the right sack, you can even ride it around on a normal bike. It's the simplest thing, takes two seconds to set up and adjust, and it has a great little sound to it, when it starts compressing. Maybe one day, I'll add another 4/5-watt amp for stereo, but as it is, I'm using that much more than my 80's Boogie or Fender Deluxe
.
Nice! My favorite small amps are the Fender Greta and Pro Junior. And yes you can get great sounds from em especially for recording!
Mike Campbell. Fender tweed deluxe and Princeton (non reverb)! Great show guys.
Some extremely insightful observations about the real world practicalities of gigging on a budget using modern tube amps here.
Definitely another eye opener episode. Thank you guys! :-)
Great episode. I really don't know why anyone bothers with big amps. I just used one blues junior for a gig at the festival hall on the south bank - had the master volume set at 4!!
You guys have a lot of videos, and I've only just begun to scratch the surface, but Mick man, THAT was beautiful playing all over this one! Thanks for moving me. :)
Subbed on the strength of just a few, in it for the long haul. Keep it up, chaps! :D
+JackFeelsNerves Thanks so much Jack, that's very kind of you to say! Welcome on board, we're glad to have you on the good ship TPS!
I love that clean sound with the Cali76 reminds me of the clean sound of my 50w plexi with a Les Paul! clean sustain!
I was thinking about ordering a tumnus for my blues junior this made my mind up.
I love That Pedal Show. You Guys are Fantastic. I'm a fan from Philadelphia, yes... Philly.. I Love this video. Thank you guys for being so very cool. . peace, MrMike :)
I am still on the hunt for a marshall class 5 to go with my Blues JR eve since this episode. Great tones gentlemen!
A hunt? They’re all over Reverb in head and cabinet versions with special editions available.
These amps are not hard to find. Right this second there are 35 on Reverb between 380 for a normal combo and 1100 for one of the limited brown/burgundy head/cabs with a pinup girl printed on the grill.
Oh fellas thank you thank you thank you! Been wanting a video like this for years! My Class 5 has been gigged all over the country either on its own, miced up or through my 2x12 and I love it. Such an underrated amp. Following your advice I have an AC10 on the way to pair with it and cannot wait.
I'm not a big pedal man but I run a reverb/delay and a Rangemaster clone into mine and the tone is to die for. Thanks so much for popularising small amp usage and hopefully now I won't get sneered at by other guitarists so much when I rock up with my mini-Marshall (before they hear it) I learned a load from this and look forward to experimenting. Made my day. Excellent, excellent stuff.
+Leo Cookman You know it Leo. Your setup sounds blissfully simple and toneful. We can all use some of that! Thanks for watching.
+Leo Cookman You know it Leo. Your setup sounds blissfully simple and toneful. We can all use some of that! Thanks for watching.
Another awesome video guys! I would be interested in an in depth video on all of the ways you could utilize a quartermaster QMX. That would make for a great video. I don't feel like I totally understand it from the videos online. Thanks!
some of the best tones I've heard in this show besides the chorus and ss tape delay episodes. cheers!
Hi Guys, great show and your choice of small amps is brilliant! For those of us who can't afford 2 amps, or it just isn't feasible to have or gig with 2 amps, we have to choose one that is most versatile. This is why a transistor amp with a tube overdrive may be the most versatile option. This accomodates electric and acoustic guitars. I am anxiously awaiting when you have a show that features this as an option. :-) Thanks guys!
Would love to see you do a video on home use rigs! All lower volume sounds for bedroom/apartment playing. Been watching and waiting so long in hope!! Everybody seems to cater for gigging/slash recording levels naturally but very little home use! Would be greatly appreciated! All the best👍
Loving the tones here, gents. I am, and always have been, a low-watt player - a Budda Verbmaster 18W was my mainstay until I finally had a custom amp built by Mike Whitney - 15W of just incredible goodness. I get the tone I want, the sound guy/gal gets the control he/she wants.
+Vincent Tuckwood nice :)
Just love you guys, making my day!
magical...great sounds guys!!!
Binge watching videos of this channel....love your work
+DA_G Man cheers D :)
Great small amp demo. Since you're likely putting it through a PA and have a monitor at most gigs, you don't really need a loud amp. For recording, it's a no brainer - small amps are perfect for getting guitar tracks that will sit nicely in a mix - nice mid range, not too much low end to filter out.
I also use the Sennheiser 906 amp microphone. I think it's a bit better sounding than a 57 (a bit fuller, not such a ridiculous presence hump) and its shape allows me to hang it by the microphone cable in front of the speaker with no need of a stand. Definitely one of the best purchases I've made in the last couple of years. Thank for another great show.
+Lawrence Gillespie Nice one Lawrence. Do try the 906 about an inch and a half off the grille. Just a little bit more space in the tone... Thanks for watching.
That Pedal Show Yes, I use the handy included mike clip for better positioning when recording. Live it's all about convenience and isolation. Good tip.
I love how many rooms they had. i remember the OG one. now i love to see they blew up.
In the 70s I used to play a 50 watt pro reverb fender amp with 2x12 speakers open back with a strat and leave it as far off stage as I could angled out 35 to 45 degrees in the direction of the crowd using a 25 ft guitar cable and crank it up to 7 or 8 on some songs. That was more fun and the tone more delicious than anything I have ever experienced. The only pedal I used was a Wah, and sparingly. The small amps today sound too boxy to me, even the Fender Deluxe Reverb and I'm told that is because of the cheap capacitors used and not the size of cabinet or the speakers. I wish I could find out more about that. Having 2, 5watt small amps would be a viable option for the 'weak of back' but they would have to not have that boxy sound that comes with small amps typically.
Best show on the web right now , keep it going guys , fantastic work !
+David fournier cheers David :))
Been expecting something like this for so long!
i love the sonic blue start with the tinted neck, vintage reissue is beautifull
I never thought about adding another small amp, great idea especially if you want to do a wet/dry set up. Right now my blues junior sounds great by itself, I really want that tumnus though
I have a blues junior...now I really want a Class 5!
Awesome video! Thanks! I needed this, though I didn't know... Haha. Cheers mates!!
Incredible tone in the final scene :O Just georgous
Hello Dan and Mick, I want to thank you for the awesome work, I've been learning lots and lots since I started watching your videos.
I only recently watched the video on the graphic EQ, and was wondering if you guys might do something like it, but instead exploring parametric EQ pedals? There are some pedals that focus on that type of equalization, and it's a different approach to EQ.
Thanks again for the great videos, you guys rock.
I don't use pedals or tuners (old guy), but still love the show - thanks guys!! (difficult for me to fathom a complicated pedal board like you have - I just plug and play...)
Friday is always better with the tone treat we get from you guys.
Nice you covered small amps. I decided longtime ago to use 50 watts combo amps only and forget about the big stack amps.
Please do a vibe only show. Seems lots of new modern vibes have comeout recently that "beat" the original Uni-Vibe. Suggested contenders: Rockett Pedal vibe, Lovepedal VIbronaut, Fox Aquavibe, Drybell, and more.
Phaser use for lead tones is also a great show idea. Exclude the MXR90 that pedal is already known and now there are modern phasers like the Empress Phaser, Blackouteffectors,Pigtronix,Chase Bliss.
Rock on and prosper.
