What Squeaking Ball Joints Sound Like

- In this video I have a great example of what squeaking ball joints sound like. Squeaking ball joints can squeak when turning or going over bumps. A squeaking ball joint is usually caused by poor lubrication which is the case with the vehicle in the video. The ball joint boots busted quite some time ago allowing the lubricant to escape and allowed water and dirt to get in. This caused rust and a rough surface to build up on the ball and in the socket causing the squeaking noise when the joint is articulated.
Note: This is just one way in which a ball joint can fail. Many times ball joints can clunk, knock and rattle due to excess clearance built up in side the ball socket between the ball and the socket.

This is just one way in which a ball joint can fail and is only and example of the noise a ball joint can make if it has failed in this way. As mentioned in the video a ball joint can also make many other noises. This is only an example of one noise it could make. Also, a proper stethoscope or chassis ears diagnosis should be done to pin point the exact location of the noise you are hearing. Other components in the steering and suspension system can make similar sounds. This video is not intended to show how to properly diagnose a faulty ball joint. It is only intended to show you an example of one noise it may make.
Very direct and very straight forward video!! No half hour Self Introduction, Thank you!
this sound has caused me so much pain and embarrassment, i spent 1900 at a mechanic shop fixing random other things control amrs axles etc, and this noise appeared 2 weeks after. glad i found this video to locate what the problem is, thank you!!!
same thing happened to me
@@billyjimbobjr Dod you also spend exactly 1900 at a mechanic shop fixing random things other than control arms?
This is what I’m scared of, spending money to fix the wrong thing, but my car makes the same noise so I think this is ot
Heck yea same thing happened to me. I’m so pissed they made me spend so much money on so many other different things that weren’t the dm problem.
@@auroramothergoddess how much did you spend to fix this problem?
The only video on whole youtube that exatly what I needed.
Glad to help.
Thank you this is exactly the sound I was hearing on my vehicle.
Hi
Me too
I have the squeaky noise when I drive over bumps. Thanks for the excellent video. Other guys talk for 20 minutes before they start to make the noise
The temporary fix is finding the noisy Ball joint , inspecting the boot for tears/ holes .... once found get a can of red grease with those tiny little red straws and shove it in the tear. Spray spray spray. Its messy and old black grease and dirt will come pouring out. So place an oil rag below it. After that its just a matter of turning your wheel back and forth working the fresh grease in. Should quiet the noise.
*Sidenote...... the boots are sometimes still good even if the ball joint isnt. If this is the case you can create a pinhole for the straw and apply grease.
This worked for my 2003 explorer sport immediately.
I just ordered silicone spray instead will that work? Before I seen your comment, not after or I would have ordered what you said to.
@Ninnjette- should work fine. This is of course a temporary fix. You'll definitely need to reapply eventually
@@Mike81USA Thank you! I need to get it fixed, I just can't figure out where it's coming from. I appreciate it!
@Ninnjette- drove me crazy for weeks. I sprayed all up under there , just anything that looked like it could creak. Never helped though because the part I needed to spray was covered by the boot. Once I shot it inside the boot it was almost immediately quieter. Keep in mind to keep it totally quiet I'd need to do this multiple times a week. Spraying it typically lasts me a month or so before it's squeaky enough to irk me again . I really need to just change them
@@Mike81USA Ok I will keep that in mind! If it doesn't work at first, just spray the hell out of everything under there. I have a wonderful mechanic, he works at an actual shop but he allows me to buy the part then he just charges me very reasonable labor. This is the one thing though, he keeps telling me "it's fine it's just the way they're made it's just the bushings" but it sounds terrible! It's driving me crazy! Thank you for taking the time!!
Super helpful, this is definitely my issue. Sounds horrific when it's cold outside especially.
Ooh boy you dont want to know how loud they can be in very hot day(like this one) 😂

I'm glad you picked this one!
Thanks so much!! Mechanic told me it was the lower ball joints but someone said no way, you'd hear a clunk. Nope, just this nasty squeek
Good video, truck was making the same noise was the lower ball joint. Kept being told "ball joints don't squeak" well I can confirm this same noise I had.
Massive thank you for making this video. This noise has been driving me insane for the last two weeks and the 2 mechanics I took it too said there was nothing wrong. I can now order the parts and fix it. Thank you so very very much.
Your so welcome!
Did u fix it?
@@TEXX_OFFICIAL956 So turns out it wasn't the problem, after getting all the tools and parts I realised that they had no play in them and they look fine. After a few more months of looking over everything and wanting to headbutt a brick wall I found that the mechanic I had replace my shock pads had installed them wrong and hadn't used enough grease on the underside 🤦♀️ Originally i had a mechanic do the shock pads for me as I wasn't confident with working with the springs but after this I was able to go to a different mechanic and they let me work on it with them so I've learnt how to fix/replace them myself. Very happy with the out come just wish it didn't take so long 😂
My mechanic and I were trying to figure out what the heck that noise is coming from behind my left front tire. Thank you it's much appreciated.
Thank you never thought about that causing my squeak. Replacing you saved my life
1:14 Had this playing on my tv up loud in my room. My roomate thought I was doing you know what 😂😂😂. But yeah my 97 honda crv makes this exact noise. It's driving me crazy
And that’s the noise I was looking for 🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks
Thanks a lot for this. Sounds exactly like my car. I’ve been spraying down every joint underneath the car trying to pinpoint the squeak. But can’t really spray down a shot ball joint. I’ll be swapping them out.
Best videos. Thank you this is exactly the sound I was hearing on my vehicle.
Glad it helped.
Its most likely shocks but anyway

Thanks for the short and no blah...blah... blah video. Huge help!
So glad I finally know what that AWFUL noise is!! Thank U!
Visited several mechanics, no one could find out whats making the noise. I had to spray wd40 silicon on every part underneath one by one to find out by myself that its the ball joint. And had to tell the mechanic its the ball joint, please order a new one and replace it wth. And after 2weeks the left one has gone bad too. They did one for $400.
This video is golden. Bought my part today for piece of mind
My Lexus is making the exact sound. I'm saving this video and every other that pertains to my problems. Thanks for your video 👍🏽
What year and make? I'm going thru the same thing as we speak on my lex
My 99 gs400 is making this noise, but noise is coming from steering rack where the billow covers the shaft of the steering rack on passenger side
Is it an ES300 perhaps?
Amazing. That sounds exactly like what I’m hearing under my truck. I’ll take a look tomorrow to find out how bad it is. Thanks for this!
Its probably your shocks or rear suspension dont get to worried but look anyway this video is definitely not clear about it if concerned mechanic
my car just started making this noise and I was worried it could be something more expensive. Thanks for this video I’m pretty sure this is my problem as my car makes the same exact noise. Now it’s just time to see which side it’s doing it on.

Common problem with the SN95s. I've had 5 of them. 99-04s and they ALL eventually needed at least one ball joint replaced by 150k miles. My recommendation: replace them all when you get one. My first bad experience it completely disconnected and came off. Thank God I was just reversing out of a parking spot.
Edit: there was also no noise or any warning signs that the joint was bad. Obviously had I inspected it that may have been different but that was young inexperience on my part
Yes. I have regreased my bushes many times . But I think it's this. Exact same sound. Rubber is boot intact. So never suspect
Legend for this video.
If I hear the squeaking but not cluncking, does that mean is semi-safe to drive still?
Helped me with my 2008 ram 🙌🏽
Awesome!
Thank you for the no bs video..straight 1 the point

@BarboursAutoHelp What was is the problem again? Ball joint ?
This was so usefull exactly wht my Dicovery 4 is doing....many thanks for posting this..
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
This is exactly the sound im getting thanks for the info
That kind of squeaking can also come from the bushings in the control arms.
True
I drove my 1996 Cobra in yesterdays heavy heavy rain ..almost 2 hours on road ..now today have the squealing when turning wheel. .not power steering..sounds just like ball joint….is chance washed away any grease etc..car sits low. .i don’t know if monitor comments.thanks
Mine is squeaking when I rock my wheel back and forward
Thanks so much I found out my boots on my durango make this exact noise and I hate it ! Now I know.. I thought it was my cv joint or shocks but those probably still need to be replaced.
I am wondering if this is an after market ball joint or an old dried out OEM. A year and a half ago my ball joint started making this noise on and off. I never thought once it totally failed that it would separate and drop the suspension. Lesson learned. This was on a 2008 Honda Accord. Replaced that ball joint. Few months later. Stiff steering and that same noise. Replaced both sides this time. Few months later AGAIN. Same noise left side. Replaced that one under warranty. A little more than a few months after that. Right side doing the same. These replacements were ALL MOOG ball joints. Car currently getting OEM joints installed...
The squeak shown in the video can happen with any ball joint, OEM or afermarket.
Sounds just like my '05 Chevy Silverado 1500 ext. cab long bed truck. Thanks for the video :-)
thank u...thought it was something else like leaf spring bushings...this is exactly what mine sounds like on my 98 F150
Mine do the same, the rubber around the ball joint has a tear put the straw from the WD 40 in that tear and spray it and it’ll help won’t make that sqeeking sound until you can replace them. That sound is annoying
Amazing demonstration Hoss.

Exactly what I was looking for.
Glad you found it.
Could also be the control arm bushings. I suspect my ball joints are going bad because I hear hollow clunks when I drive on rough roads. Took tire off and confirmed squeek was from the bushings, but my ball joints were firm when doing the pry bar test
My lower ball joint was very firm and stiff but squeaked like this. Just changed it 5 minutes ago. Squeak gone.
Also control arm bushings from my experience don't squeak when turning the wheel. The control arm doesn't move left right. It would squeak over bumps up and down
Yeah my 2002 Mustang GT just started doing this. I was under the car with someone steering and I could have swore it was the strut. Changed that and to my amazement the sound was still there. Bought a complete lower control arm assembly with new ball joint. Installing it this week but damn is that noise annoying as hell. Tried spraying some lubricant into the ball joint but it sounds the same.
Hope it goes well.
Barbour's Auto Help Thanks it looks like for my lower control arm I have to move the steering rack slightly forward so the bolt for the control arm bushing clears the steering rack and I usually only have an hour at lunch to get any job done on my personal vehicle so it’s gonna be a race.
I just did this on my 04 mustang. I just replaced the ball joints and tie rod ends with moogs and greased them up, all noise is gone and steering and handling is far better. My left drift is gone
great info...Thanks
Nice. Exactly same sound on my 94 thunderbird. Thank u :)
Good luck on you T-Bird! I had a 1996 that did this as well.✌️
Returned the shocks
Thanks alot... exactly what I was looking for
So would you have to replace the ball joint completely in order to fix it? And do you have to something about the rust?
Check them to see if they have play in them. If your ball joints have play in them, I would definitely get them replaced with OEM ball joints. If there is no play, you should be able to grease the ball joints and solve the problem.
my wheel makes the same fucking noise on my swapped civic, just started making this noise. everything WAS replaced brand new last summer everything. thanks for the video man👌🏼👌🏼🫡

I have a squeaking noise in the front that only happens while braking. At first I was assuming it was brakes but everyone tells me I have plenty of tread. @@risbill1 yeah, it's just hit -3 here and it's when I noticed it, it's a really minor squeak but it's annoying
I have a 2005 mercury Montego and my vehicle just started making the exact same noise and I do mean the exact same noise.......guess I need some ball joints or a whole new assembly.....😔
I have 2009 sonata the noise was driving me crazy because I have just replace the ball joints 5 months ago along with quick struts, and last week Lower and upper control arms, so we ended up pinpointing the problem to the ball joint and the reason it fail is because the Moog ball joints come with a nipple to be able to grease the ball joint, when I installed it I did not grease the ball joint, thinking that the ball joint will come ready for installation and I guess I was super wrong, because after greasing the ball joint car started to quiet down, I will be replacing the ball joint anyways because the damage was already done to it making that noise but that was the problem lower ball joint, so if you guys have nipple to grease, grease it up guys every oil change and make sure you grease it before you install it.
