This video is a practice exercise for learning bead placement on multipass stick welds.
I used 7014 electrodes but almost any electrode would offer good practice.
I started with 1/4" steel and welded one bead.
then I stacked 2 beads over top that single root pass.
then I stacked 3 beads over top of those 2 beads for a total of 6 beads.
In order to get all the use out of the material, beads can be stacked until there is no more room on the plate.
This will require letting the meal cool off periodically but will offer a lot of practice and hood time with very little material.

Thanks for creating these videos Jody. I can't imagine the cost of classes that were this in depth.

Anybody new to stick welding definitely notice how Jody does not move around all over the place with his electrode. He points the electrode directly at the joint he intends on welding then at a consistent pace gradually starts to drag his electrode. He keeps the end of the electrode very tight moving along with the puddle. No big movements that could result in undercut , underfilled or getting slag inclusion in the weld puddle.

I went to trade school back in 2007 and I take being a welder very serious and take pride in the quality of my own work. Jodys vids are some of the best. I paid $1,500 a semester for trade school. Stick welding is most universal type of welding, as can be used underwater, anywhere outside and in any position, often not availble with TIG or MIG. I prefer TIG like many hobby welders, but it helps to be really good with stick.

Some types of rod have hard to see puddles. Try E7018 rods. You need to bake them in an oven for at least an hr @375°f - 400° .
7018 is also known as Code Rod... its used throughout the industry for strong ductile welds, and is the rod used for certification tests on structural plate. Check Jodys vids on that rod for good views of the puddle.

Straights remove more material faster and with less effort in the hands of an experienced hand. They dont make cup shaped grinding wheels do they cause I have had more than one of those fly apart ;)
