This video is about stick welding an uphill outside corner joint in 1/4" (6mm) thick hot rolled steel.
I initially intended to just show a single pass weld as compared to a 2 pass weld but I ran into a few wrinkles so I thought I would show all the good, bad, and yes ugly.

Thank you Jodi for teaching people how to do things right for showing people what to do. And all these videos Jody teachers from basic to intermediate welding
The technical cut and etch tests are the best!
Beginner welder I practice a lot of these joints and cross-sections and different techniques that Jodi teaches as long as I am keep myself within the parameters of what Jody is teaching I haven't had a weld fail yet. Thank you Jody
I really enjoy your demonstrations of stick welding, and details about stick-code and amps used. Thanks for the close-up photos and discussions.
Jody u are the best dude )
Hey Jody! Tig finger werks great! I wanted to wait for a while before I said something. I used it as a production welder for Frasier in Canada (Fracan) I don't recommend them. I didnt go to college for that! Anyway when you gotta pump out hundreds of pieces and they give you the odd piece that your stuck in a hot spot... It werks. All day!!
I've no doubt you could have kept going and perfected the technique and then shown only the perfected video, you chose to show us the warts and all progression, from which we learned a great deal more. Hats off to you sir, keep it up.
As always Jody, you are the best. Great arc shots of the weave/pause slightly on the uphill. With the new inverter machines I am back into stick welding more and more. Thanks for the excellent learning experience.
Thanks Jody, always learning from you. My stick welding is so much better now and I can differentiate between good and bad welds now at work, God bless you sir for sharing your knowledge!
Love that saw. It's amazing how nice a cut that leaves and how quickly it cuts through 1/4". Another great video. I think as long as I keep practicing and watching I will be competent on welding. Already learned a ton about stick and Mig. Once I get those two fairly squared away I'm going to start on Tig.
I love your cut and etch tests. It definitely allows for more insight to exactly how different techniques perform. Once again excellent videos! Clear, concise, and to the point.
Absolutely excellent info/video; the proof is in the testing. Thanks!
Loved this video. I really appreciate how you show us your imperfect pieces. Makes me feel like I can improve and get better as you did at the end of this video. Especially with vertical up with 7018. Thank you!!
These are so educational. thank you so much for the honesty and transparency.
Jody, man, what a quality learning video! Awesome. Thank you. Be blessed my friend!!
Glad that you point out flaws and the good as well!
Happy Independence day, Jody! Thanks for everything.
Thank you very much!
You are a very good teacher, you have helped me a lot
With your advice.
Thank you and fight from GREECE
You do fantastic demonstrations. Thanks
Hi Jody, first of all thank you for all your videos! As been a pleasure seeing and learning. For that undercut, going on a zigzag Point to point uphill, try to stop a bit more on the sides, working with the amps the same time. Have fun and all the best
The master at work. Thanks for the upload Sir.
thanks for the video, I get some good lessons watching your videos.
Happy fourth of July !!! Jody thanks for the video , still enjoying the tig finger
Another informative video, thanks Jody
Superb. Another absolutely uniquely skilled, yet seemingly effortless demonstration. You sir are the very best there is! Please keep it coming friend and you’ll make a living out of this CZcams thing for sure! Amazing videos. Just simply amazing!
Your right about the mill scale learned that in class never thought of removing it before and after removing it what a difference in the weld.
Thank you.
The cut & etch is definitely good stuff to expierement I stick weld every day & almost 100% of my welding out in the field is stick other than aluminum Tig jobs. Fit up is huge agreed, especially I get jobs where large plates are cut out before my arrival for heavy equipment & I always have a lot of fitup to do. Great job Jody I always enjoy to see what you have in store for us next. Love your Tig finger bro. Definitely has saved my 🥓 on my high amp aluminum jobs!
Thanks Jody !
Thank you. This is a valuable lesson.
Great instruction.
Jody, Thanks so much for the video. I had asked for this video as I have some 1/2" HR to do this to. It's not structural but I want decent welds anyway. I did glean a lot of help from you here. Hope you are having a great 4th and plz keep the SMAW content coming.
Thanks Jody
I WISH I COULD GET CLASSES FROM YOU IN PERSON YOURE THE BEST.
Thanks for the video.
Good video Jody👊🏻
great video lesson, thanks ,,
Enjoyed watching
Good job man
Jody,
I have learnt so much from you, every video is a gem. I had to laugh with the two fingers at the end, that's the English equivalent of the middle finger to an American :-) Keep up the good work mate and thank you.
Jody I've been welding on heavy equitment for about 3 years and have watched your videos firm the start I'm a huge fan of your work anyway could you do a field repair video explaining some basic tools and tricks for out in the field and maybe so be basic 6011 and 7018 joints and passes. Most of my work is far away from the shop in the middle of a Hayfield or soybean field thanks -Nate
That's not one of Jody's areas of expertise. You should checkout IC Weld:

Lots of tips you can pickup from Isaac and that community.
Thank you
Nice video 🛠🛠🛠
thanks! very interesting!
great vid, thank you
thankx jidy
Hello, I am a follower of yours and watching your videos I really like how you work and how you leave the solders but I do not understand English I would love to be able to understand you in Spanish to learn more.
Would really like to see some vertical stainless stick videos, the only one I saw was kind of a 45° weld and have been waiting for more,I enjoy all your work but, again, would like to see more out of position stainless stick videos, thanks!
excellent
Put a few small tacks along the backside to prevent overlap
Like some nice women sings "You're simply The BEST"!!! Thank You one more time!
Jody, I wonder if a 6011 root pass would of provided the penetration all the way through or if it was just fitment gap? Would be an interesting follow-up test. Great test video!!
Thank you for the educational video. What should we do to avoid the overlap?
Love your videos! Amazing how metals move when heat is applied. You gotta add more tacks. Just be sure to thin them with cutting disc before the weld is burnt in. Any chance a peek at your etch recipe? Would love to check my beads too.
Hey, the 3/32 Rod's metric friend is 2.5mm. 1.6, 2.0, 2.5, 3.2 :)
Great video - thanks! Could you tell me how you stop the overlap from happening?
Thanks for the video Jody. What could be done to help prevent the overlap? More tac welds, aluminum draw bars for heat?
nice!! 💪 👷🏻
How are you doing the measurements on the still photos? Is this a software or did you just measure with calipers and add the dimensions with MS Paint? I apologize if you answered this before and I missed it.
Very interesting. Great video. Like an earlier comment, I wonder if a small gap would have helped.
Can you do a video about welding thicker metals (corner joint/other joints) with TIG or a TIG/Stick combo?
I'm interested to see the results using thinner material and maybe downhill?
hello, friend, what aluminum is used in welding, I ask for a sybole because it's so nice to you, thank you
If my weld puddle is falling out what are the possible causes? Is it just too high an amp setting? I think I'm using just a bit of up tilt angle like you are. I last tried this with 1/8" 7018 rod.
Thanks so much for these videos.
Love the videos! What kind of chop saw do you use?
Hey jody do you have any videos on the best way to cut steel ??
pls make a tutorial about sheet metal welding with e6013
Niece one
Hey Jody could you do a video on stainless MIG?
how do you like that saw i bought one because of your vid , havent' used it much
but i find a few issues, there's oil coming out wherehandle meets the saw blade body, is this normal ??? how many cuts can i expect from the blades? thank you
Please start shipping to South Africa!
Hey there, My welding teacher told us to put 3 tacks on our work. You don't have a 'middle' tack - could that be the cause of your "fold" ? Just asking because I want to learn. Thank You for all the effort you put into your videos.
Thanks for a great video. I just recently subscribed. I am curious if you could recommend a multiprocess machine for hobbyist use. I would like to delve into the tig world (aluminum). However, I don't want to have to auction off my first born to do it. Thanks again!
To The Top Crane check out the welding tips and tricks podcast, episode 92.. they dive into this subject in great depth!
bluz64, thank you!
I dont have experience with all of the available multi process machines except for the lincoln 210mp. and so far so good with that machine. runs good off a generator too
weldingtipsandtricks, thank you for the response! Knowing that it works well off of generator power is good information to know. I'll check it out for sure.
I got the AHP alphatig 200x about a year or so ago and it has been good for both stick and tig welding on AC and DC. I weld quite a bit of aluminum with it and run it off of a 240v wall outlet
Was that acid or sonthing that you put on the weld to see it after you cut? I'm a new welder and have never seen that before
can some1 tellme what's wrong with undercut? i mean is a weak point or smth? or just visual issue? cant understand completely, thnx
Interesting
👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍
What lens do you use on your camera to record your welds? Is there a helmet that good? lol
Hey Jody what solution are you using for your macro etching?
He has talked in the past about using a Stainless Steel passivization solution and Naval Jelly for etching. Based on how it looked I would guess the former for today's stuff. Just a guess though.
Would welding downhill make a difference?
it would. downhill with 7018 is not recommended.
Downhill 7018 causes lots of inclusions. The heavy flux gets in the way and pushes the metal into odd places. However, 7018 downhill with a really high heat is good for digging out some bad weld and metal if you can get in there with a grinder and get back down to all clean metal to build back up. It's sometimes faster than something like using a grinder or setting up an arc gouger. We typically use 1/8" to 5/32" 7018 on very high heat (1/8" around 150 amps, 5/32" up to even 200 amps). Carry a wide arc and pulse in and out a little bit and as you see drips forming, lead them along by making some quick down motions to encourage them to fall to the ground, then go back to where you were. A little practice, you'll get it. :-)
Im also curious to know why... Knowing that weld causes shrinkage.... You didn't gap the material ( kinda like a root pass scenario )....
One knucklehead hit the wrong 👍.
Why so cold turn the heat up to 85 Amps your way to cold
Scott Stambaugh exactly, too cold for 1/4 especially
Not exactly on topic but something I thought you might be interested in. Any thoughts on the problems?

I find welding pipe much easier
Bitchin Stuff .. I'm Hooked With TTickets A WElding Machine ***
Brother go over the throat, small step up, cross back in a shallow z, small step up, etc, etc, etc. You'll do away with that ugly toe
I hate uphill stick, looks like crap everytime lol
It's too bad that all the welding jobs in Arizona only pay minimum wage unless you have 5+ years experience. Even if you've got your 3g and 4g D1.1 structural certs, still nobody will hire you in Arizona...
WeAreTwoDoorsDown go weld over far ok usa is much bigger than the netherlands
👍👍👍👍
