TimotheeReacts I personally think this was a GREAT job well done job movie!👍 In my opinion though, I personally think that all of these alternate 'timelines' were only Evan's fantasies to cope with accidentally killing Kayleigh, since a lot of the changes don't make sense such as Evan slashing his hands in the spikes at school when he was a child, considering that he could've very have severed his hands. Also, if you think about it, the cellmate he was showing it to said that it randomly appeared, but how could he have noticed the changes if the scars have ALWAYS been there in the first place? What FURTHERS proves the fact that Evan was delusional was when the fortune teller told him that he had NO lifeline, that wouldn't make any sense whatsoever, considering that everyone has a lifeline, so that indicates that it was Evan's guilt of accidentally killing Kayleigh eating away at him, since HE feels like he was never meant to be because of that.

  • @zvimur
    @zvimur Před 3 lety +367

Ok, this was the director cut. The Theatrical release went for a less grim ending. Instead of suicide, Evan went back to the very first time he met Kayleigh, scared her, making sure she wouldn't become his friend.

You watched movie with alternate ending. The original film ends when Evan wakes up in the dorm. There's only Lenny. There were no Kayleigh or Tommy. In final scene Evan walks down the street in the crowd and see Kayleigh going to the other directions. They look in passing at each other and she smiles. There's also other alternate ending, where she stops and he asks her for coffee date.

@@gordon861 That's really weird, in my opinion this ending is *so* much better. It was built up earlier in the story with his mother talking about having two stillbirths before him so that gets paid off rather than just being some random throwaway line. The theatrical ending just seems like something the studio forced on them, it's washed out and weak.

    • @RedClaw87

This is the original ending. They changed it up for the cinematic release, because the test audience thought it was a weird ending promoting abortion and that there are children, that aren't meant to be. I think the movie makes more sense with this ending though.

So in case it wasn't properly explained, the butterfly effect is a concept from chaos theory where a minor change to initial conditions of a dynamic system leads to large changes later. The common understanding of this is summarised as the flapping of a butterfly's wings at one time caused a tornado weeks later.
I loved this movie. I studied chaos theory at university and the concept of this movie has always intrigued me. Not a fan of the main (adult) actor but a fantastic movie nonetheless.
As mentioned by others, the original ending for this was different. Evan goes back to when he first meets Kayleigh, and is mean to her to scare her, so that they don't become friends and she goes to live with her mom instead. It was the only way to keep her and the others safe and sane.

Thank god you saw the Director's Cut. The studio made him change it because at the time they were afraid of the potential backlash over a baby strangling itself with its own umbilical cord in the womb. You'll probably notice most of the comments here - people are pretty nostalgic for the Theatrical version, which I get. I personally think the Theatrical release's ending was just...okay. I mean, it was good-okay. But nothing super special that really resonated with the wider audience. I'm guessing that's why you've never heard much about it. It seems all 4 alternate endings have their own Fandom. I just personally preferred this shockingly emotional, bittersweet ending.

Some people are wrong on this movie. When he goes back in time everything revolves around this one girl. He gives up his love and one thing that makes him happy in order to fix what he messed up. This one thing he gives up in order to make everyone else happy. When he passes her she's not the drug addict as you can tell when he goes back in time. After he gives her up she ends up being a successful business woman and everyone else is happy, his friends never change, the dad sells his camera, he tells her he never wants to see her again as a kid...He puts everything back to normal and gave up the one thing that made him happy just so everyone else would be happy.

I saw the theatrical version but I think this ending makes more sense for the story. Everything was building to why he shouldn’t exist and him making that choice for the good of all. I do like the meta-ness that a movie about different realities has different endings depending on which one you watch.

The acting of Kutcher was spot on, especially the moments where his mind recreated new memories, falling in a state of shock where his nose always started to bleed heavily. you could really feel the hopelessness of the situation when he finally ended in a mental institution. what the doctor said made completely sense from a medical perspective. this was very well written into the story and you could feel the struggle that there seems to be no chance to get his hands back on his diaries ever. also the butterfly effect itself was show very well, best example is the violent kid who became a completely different person being a christ just by changing a couple of seconds of his life. check out the different endings for this movie, this one was the unofficial one. the official one is less disturbing

He didn't commit suicide in his mother's womb, but made sure the girl won't stay with the father. In the end, after finishing the university, he ended up in the New York. One day he was walking down the road and he has passed a girl that was looking the same as the adult version of his girlfriend from the previous lives (sorry, I don't remember the actress name and I'm too lazy to check it out on google). He also burned his diaries stating "I know who I am, and I don't need those diaries any more". But yeah, an unborn child killing himself, fits perfectly into the story as well. It's darker though.

The guy is like semi body builder looking today. It's a pretty intense change if you saw him on other shows(Boy Meets World was one he was on back years ago). He lost like over 300lbs.

A computer science guy was called into his bosses office. His boss asked him to set his personal computer up with every safety measure possible, the best, so that nobody but him would be able to access it. The employee said he would do his best, but, "No computer is 100% safe, even offline.", and the boss insisted that something important can be protected properly from anything.
The employee gave the example, "Well, if only you have access to it, you have the password or key to enter the computer. A hacker I can protect you from, but what if a criminal holds your daughter hostage and demands access or he will kill her?"
The boss pauses and thinks, and finally asks "Which daughter?"

Or just living at that time, I actually always kinda liked the 2000's vibe personally, sadly I didn't get to see too much of it even here at home (central europe), let alone in america (actually never been). For example, when they planted the explosive in the mail box , instead of him opening it and losing his hands he could have just find another way to deal with it.
Or when he light up the explosive and killed the girl , he could have just take it and changed the hiding place or just dump it outside the window and that woule literally have fixed the WHOLE timeline.
