It was shot on film. I didn’t look at IMDB and assumed digital because of how clean it was. So great job by the filmmakers either way.

Film is king! I think it was actually good for your review that you thought it was shot digitally because it was like a blind taste test, you weren't deceived by placebo effect and you still weren't biased negatively. :)

It's a shame that there's no IMAX scenes, when I saw it in IMAX it blew me away especially one of the transitions, the opening title sequence (and entire opening sequence) was in IMAX and when the camera spun upside down at the end of the sequence it slowly turned to widescreen
The film, even the IMAX shots, was composed for scope. If you take a look at comparisons between the two, the IMAX version has a lot of dead space above and below the main emphasis of the scene.
“Collector’s Edition” ? I guess that these days the studio’s consider anyone who buys any physical media as a ‘collector’ !

that's basically how all the 4K disney related discs are branded right now. Nothing new or different in comparison to one another

funny enough, I have the "collector's edition" blu ray of Casino Royale (i think it was printed '06). It's a 2 disc set with loads of special features. Far more worthy of the "collector's edition" moniker than what's shown here for no time to die sadly.

@@Corbomite-ei1ty thank God because as much as I liked some of the films. he wasn't really the true Bond. It's more of a what if Bond wasn't cold-hearted and did not learn from his mistakes.
I saw the 3D version at a really nice theater nearby. There are some really good 3D moments in the film which has good depth and also a few pop-out moments, and it's obvious that 3D was taken into consideration when filming scenes. The gun barrel sequence is really cool in 3D! I'm glad to see it being released in 4K. But I truly hope that it will also be available in Blu-ray 3D somewhere on the planet.
I am so jealous if you still have a functional 3D TV!!! Mine died a few years ago and I have not been able to replace it because no one makes them anymore!! i MISS 3D TV SOOOOO MUCH!!!!
@@planetkori I have 2 Panasonic 3D plasmas, and 4 different brands of 3D projectors. My collection includes hundreds of 3D Blu-rays and continues to grow. That 4K TV manufacturers haven't embraced the 3D format is unfortunate. I hope it will make a comeback, but if it doesn't, 3D in my home theater will be alive for the foreseeable future!

I saw the 3D version too in theaters here in Argentina. It was one of the best 3D conversions ever. It almost looked native 3D
Beginning with The Dark Knight Christopher Nolan’s movies always get released with the IMAX images on the discs, from The Dark Knight all the way through to Tenet. So Imax apparently loves Christopher Nolan which makes sense because Christopher Nolan is always pro IMAX so they probably don’t mind letting his movies have those scenes kept in. Apparently he’s the only exception.
I really hope they allow Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE to have the Imax scenes as well
@@HTadd1ct Bummer. Of all the non-Nolan movies I thought might have a chance it would’ve been Dune. It certainly deserves it.
You said "it was shot very digitally" which I'm not sure if you're aware, but this film was shot entirely on film. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you meant by that. Skyfall is the only Bond film that was shot digitally. Which is funny because it's widely recognized as the best looking Bond film.

It was a mixture of 35mm (the bulk of it), 65mm, and IMAX 15/70. 65mm was used for all IMAX scenes with dialog and was intercut with the actual IMAX shots because the 15/70 cameras are extremely noisy and could not be used when capturing an actor's performance. Like a lawnmower.
That really blows that the digital code is only good for iTunes.
It'll definitely look better than my cinema where it looked like a DVD.
It wasn't shot on digital as far as I know. It was shot on 35mm, 65mm and IMAX.
Treated myself to the steelbook for Christmas! I loved Daniel in this role . This film 🎥 is excellent and a great send off for him ! Skyfall is still his best though in my opinion! I bought the 4K based on your review. Without a doubt the best I own, it's a show stopper. The Cinematography is perfect, no scene lost in a dark setting. The film was gripping from beginning to end. Nice to see a film with great action scenes. Amazon has a lot of bad reviews based on the story, not disc.
Thanks for the update Jeff. I think it says 'Collectors Edition' cos you can add it to the earlier released Daniel Craig Collection (if you own it) which has the similar artwork (minus the slip-cover).

@@Angelowalker. Either way would cost an absolute bucket. Plus, many would have some of the films in 4k so you'd be doubling up. Wouldn't interest me
You have sold me on it. I recently bought an 4K Bluray player and only have one disc so far. I enjoyed this film at the cinema and I have an Atmos system so it should work well at home.
I gotta say the PQ is good because the director is a DP and knows how to shoot:) Of course the latest equipments are there to help:)
Given next year is the anniversary of Bond, I'm going to wait to see if they do a 25 movies box set in 4K before I bother. I love this movie, but I really don't see the point to have it on its own, especially when it is a perfect finale to the Craig era. If nothing else, they'll at least do a 5 movie box set in 4K sooner rather than later.

I love James Bond but there are a lot of Turkeys - so no way buying a huge box set. All the Connery
, Lazenby, Craig and Dalton. One from Moore, one from Brosnan. So 16 at most.
There is no perfect finale for James Bond... I guess it made sense for his version of bond but I don't consider his version of bond to be the legit of bond from the books.
I just bought the 2016 James Bond Blu-ray set for $80 at Walmart. It wasn’t on sale, it wasn’t a mistake, it’s seriously $80. Guaranteed the 4K is just around the corner.

They've continuously do the "collectors edition" moniker for the James Bond releases. The 99-00 DVDs were Special Editions, the 2006 releases were Ultimate Editions
Can't wait nice review. Order mine few weeks ago. But in Canada suppose to be delivered 21 December. Very very much disappointed no IMAX, fedup with studios not providing it.
Sorry to be a bit controversial but I actually prefer it without the Imax content. Imax content means that I cannot just relax and watch the film but, instead, have to spend the whole time toggling the masking for my screen.

Question on judder/jagginess during the bridge + cemetary scene early in this movie.
I recently purchased a Panasonic UB820 UHD player which has done wonders for my Epson 5040 home cinema viewing. It really helps brighten up HDR content.
I also have a Vizio P65-C1 (2016/2017) with an LG UBK90 UHD player.
Watching this scene I was really bothered by the jerkiness and judder when the camera pans across the landscape on the bridge and then on the way to the grave site. It almost appeared like a series of stop frame stills instead of a smooth transition during the pan.
I was starting to wonder if it a processing issue on my Panasonic where I've enabled HDR tone mapping/processing as I've never noticed that amount of jerkiness on other titles. I played it back on my Vizio through the LG Player and experienced the same effect. Understand both displays are LCD technology so maybe it's related to LCD response rates?
My question is: Do you or other viewers who are commenting here see the same defect?
Is this a limitation of the viewing technology or is it the way it was finished/mastered on the disk (a limit of 24p playback?). If it was the way it was mastered on the disk, then I struggle at labeling this reference quality? I do agree that the level of shadow and highlight detail on the slower action scenes is outstanding!
Perhaps someone who's watched this scene on an OLED can comment? Do you see the judder or is it a smooth pan?

I'm getting the this one along with 2001 Space Odyssey 4k. Yes, Gruv which is Universal's blu-ray online store, is now carrying select Warner Bros. titles also. BTW great review Jeff; I just rewatched this and was the kicker for me to finally make the buy.

I managed to get the first four Daniel Craig Bond movies on 4K on Black Friday for £10 each. I opted to buy the individual titles rather than the Daniel Craig 4K box set as I did not want NTTD to be the odd one out. Looking forward to adding NTTD to this collection when it comes out next week (in the UK).
I'll wait for a complete James Bond Set on 4k with picture cards,book, etc...

@@briancardio6567 thanks! Here's hoping we get that at minimum, but I've heard since Dr. No was released in 1962 that there is a chance we start getting 60th anniversary 4ks starting in 2022. Fingers crossed.

I'm still rocking the 50th anniversary blu-ray boxset. I think for me I'll just upgrade to one 4K release per Bond as long as the transfers are good: Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, No Time to Die.
You should check out Monster Hunter. That movie had a super clean look, and great audio.

I've heard that apple tv streams at higher bitrates, so maybe thats why they want this to be stream via apple tv?
I feel Warner Bros gives Christopher Nolan permission for his IMAX footage in the Dark Knight and Rises, also the same goes for Interstellar and Dunkirk which are also distributed by Warner, I cant imagine it been a cheap process but it sure looks amazing

I've been dying to get a copy of this and it's on sale now near me. If I buy the 4K copy, it would be to enjoy just the blu ray for the moment as I don't have a 4K player yet. Does the blu ray disc in the 4K version come with bonus features or are they just on the 4K disc. Please let me know when you can!

Yes the Blu-ray has the same special features. They are on both discs.

Do you know why my Disney animations on 4K always show up way dark, compared to blu ray ? Have you come across this ? Should I change the color format to my tv ?
I have different settings for blu ray and 4K. For 4K I turn the brightness way up and the saturation is a lot lower than on the blu ray. With the HDR the saturation gets blown out way too much if I use the blu ray saturation. I use a projector but it should be the same for a tv I think.

Imax… what the heck ever happened to Imax enhanced audio that all the receivers advertized? Theres atmos, dtsx, auro-3d (also not nuch content available) and the mysterious imax enhanced codec that ive heard zero about?
I'm really glad it's not got the shifting aspect ratios, it's a pain in the arse when projecting on to a 2.35:1 screen.
Seems like The Dark Trilogy is the master of Imax shots, Marvel movies on Disney+ has a 3/4 screen fill with they're imax enhanced feature. I didn't see it in Imax but it would've been a nice feature for No Time To Die to have as long as it sounds and looks good I'm with whatever it has to offer on disc
It’s a shame the aspect ratio doesn’t change because the movie was shot on 70mm and 70mm IMAX. The aspect ratio should be 2.20.1 at least but disappointing as it should of switched between 2.20.1 and 1.78.1
I've seen comparisons of the IMAX shots and scope extracted version (as on streaming and 4k disc). The IMAX sequences were CLEARLY composed for scope. You're losing nothing of importance by not getting the IMAX ratio.
IMAX should have no say in how a film studio distributes their films. They don't "own" the full screen aspect ratio.
I didn't realize the acquisition was completed. Non the less I only use the digital code for when I am traveling and want to watch a movie. Otherwise physical media only for me please.
Got my steelbook today from BB. I FELL ASLEEP, so not a great sign... bond looks tired, the villians are few and far between, as is the action. Its no casino royale ....

Exactly the setup I have. I just made a video on how a setup like that is way more important then even resolution of you want to get what the director intended! And its so annoying when it switches because my projector automatically changes.

Would like to see you review of the Skyfall UHD disc.
The lack of IMAX enhanced being released on disk has been disappointing. Disney+ must have some exclusivity deal or timed release of some type. As a home theater owner this is disappointing because I can watch IMAX format on Disney+ streaming but subpar audio. Or watch great picture on 4k disk, no IMAX but great audio. I even believe the DTS X has not been utilized either. Just very frustrating as a home theater owner. If you could do a video on this or find any more info on what's going on with this, that would be great. Not much info on this because before the pandemic, finding disks with IMAX was not an issue.
So glad it does not have the imax! On my 2.39 screen looks so good that way. Cant stand when it switches aspects ratio!

Your review just goes to show the difference between film and digital is no longer all that great. Another example is Spielberg's new "remake" of "West Side Story." In the auditorium that I saw it, I recall thinking how digital format simply cannot complete with the rich and vibrant colors of the technical celluloid of the original 1961 production. Alas, since it was Spielberg, I should have known better. As the end-credits rolled I was surprised to read it was indeed shot in 35mm. Now, the original was shot in 65mm, so that may account for some of difference. But really, I've come to the conclusion after a lifetime of viewing thousands of movies in a countless number of theatres, how good a film looks on the silver screen is as dependent upon the venue as it is on anything else.
If you shoot on 65mm, then the difference from digital is night and day, but if it's shot on 35mm and didn't get a proper 4K scan, then yes, the difference isn't that noticeable.
Unfortunately when researching all the different places to buy this 4K, I discovered that the target exclusive Blu-ray digibook is the best looking packaging. I haven’t been impressed with any of the 4K packaging. So I’m going to buy the target exclusive Blu-ray and then I’m also going to buy the standard 4K but I’m going to put the 4K disc in my target exclusive case and then give away the Blu-rays and DVDs to family and friends. Lol
Do the special features appear on the Bluray disc too? Or only on the 4k disc?
1) Would the aspect ratio keep changing if IMAX was included? Wouldn't that be more annoying when watching ?
2) Why are CZcamsrs so secretive about their download codes? I've got the disc version so I'm not bothered if someone has my code.
3) Bluray was 'the definitive', then they said it was 4K, and now an even clearer,sharper format is coming soon !!!

I have over 600 digi movies on Vudu. Its pretty cool if your travelling, i often use my ipad ,and soak in the tub watching movies. Vudu is much easier than rigging up my laptop ,with a portable bluray. Good luck ,stay safe...merri xmas cuz
