The more I think about this movie, the more I like it. I’ve watched it 3 times now and the first time I thought it ran a little too long but after viewing it again there’s not a thing I would cut out of it. It takes its time to get where it’s going and I appreciate a modern movie that does that.
According to IMDb, JDC Scope was used in some sequences. I thought this was interesting because this process was used primarily in the 80s up to the early 90s and I’m assuming Reeves/Fraser chose this specifically for the old school look. Also, it likely explains why there is a noticeable drop off in sharpness at the edges of the frame in some scenes.
I had the same problem with seeing some dark scenes in the theater & was honestly thinking "man, I bet I'll have a better viewing experience on the 4k release". Crazy that's the world we are in now LOL

@@JeffRauseo I guess so, the only time I buy bluray is when I can tell there won't ever be a good UHD release of the movie/show. There have been a few that I have done this with but I think it's almost always worth the UHD if for no other reason than a higher quality encode.
I have to say the movie looked great on 4k....with the exception of the black levels. I understand why in some scenes they were elevated but in the one scene where it's practically pitch black they could have allowed full black. That chase scene though....my goodness 🥰

It's an interesting technique they used to get that unmistakable film texture but I think what Rian Johnson and Steve Yedlin did with Knives Out and The Last Jedi is way more impressive. They use algorithmic grain filters and adjust the color and contrast settings of their digital cameras to give something closer to the look of film (because film has its own inherent color bias and contrast.) No actual film was used. It's a far more involved process than that, of course, but they've been working on it for over 10 years and I think it's far more convincing that what we got on Dune and The Batman. I was completely shocked to learn that Knives Out was not actually shot on film.
Most of Last Jedi was shot on film. Johnson himself confirmed this. That said, Knives Out is easily the most “filmic” digitally shot movie I’ve ever seen.

I want to love this 4k so bad, knowing about the digital to film to digital processing they did to give it grain. In theory it should look great but to my eyes, it makes much of the disc look more like it's suffering from compression noise rather than a grain structure that feels appropriate. I have an LG C2 and every time I pop this in I play around with settings hoping I can get a better result and it just doesn't work for me. The idea of the processing works, the aesthetic achieved just isn't the kinda film grain I love.
Saw it twice in cinema, once in imax and once in standard.. blown away, agree completely.. best Batman movie, pre ordered the steel book before I even saw the movie

Just watched the movie, I agree on picture and sound. The audio was lacking but I have a Polk psw10 and it doesn’t get the job done. I do want to upgrade this month and rewatch. I can’t wait for the next one. Michael Giacchino does a great job on the score

Wasn't able to get the movie to look right with Dolby Vision Bright but in Dolby Vision Dark it looked perfect. The blacks & colours looked perfectly balanced in this setting especially when you put your room lights off exactly how it seemed in Cinema.

My 2 cents, I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a Marvel movie since the first avengers all the way back in 2012. But Joker and this Batman are both incredible movies and a must watch for anyone into cinema. Think of it as a crime drama, more than a comic book movie.
I really enjoyed this movie but I'm still on the fence about calling it the "BEST" Batman. Love the different direction & style the film took. It also, could have been much better cutting 30mins from the total run time. There were "filling" moments that didn't need to exist for the storyline.
Very strange to go to film and then back to digital. They could have just added grain digitally. Digital grain can be just as random. Random is random. Any kind of analog technology that has a certain look or sound can be mimicked with ease with a DSP.
I saw this film 7 times in theaters. I went to every type of screening in a bunch of different theaters, and I really miss watching it in IMAX. I saw it twice in imax and it was absolutely amazing. Regular screening looked fine, and I even went to a couple enhanced screenings liked AMC Dolby Cinema rooms but after watching it in IMAX then going to other showings, I saw how much you’re missing out on so I took myself there again. I’m sort of bummed out I didnt see it there a third time. Definitely the coolest theater experience I’ve ever had.
We just got the 4k release here in the uk. I think the blu ray beats the 4k disc watched them on 2 seperate nights i turned down the brightness on the blu ray slightly and i think it beats the 4k both looked great and an amazing movie 👌

Digital to film stock to digital. That's pretty interesting. I get the reasoning, is there a point in the future where there is simply a really good filter developed to simulate the grain of different film stocks? Or does that just open the door for purists to complain of natural grain versus simulated grain? We have one group of people trying to remove grain from video and another group trying to add grain to video. I love film :)

they used iron glass rehoused vintage helios lenses in places too which caused that falloff

Well it’s an upgrade over blu-ray so if that’s your decision to make, then it’s worth upgrading.

@@erpatt I was speaking mostly of Knives Out but the fact that with The Last Jedi you can't even tell what was shot digitally is pretty impressive.
The last Jedi is straight up film and looks every big of it.. if you can't tell a difference between that and knives out you have mental issues.
