    I love this song so much because I feel the lyrics personally. It perfectly describes my own struggles with social anxiety and introversion. And when Gilmour uses the voice box at the end, it’s like he is showing us how he communicates best - through his guitar. It speaks for him. He always manages to convey so much emotion through his instrument that often, there is no need for words. Utterly beautiful

  • @stevebennett9750
    @stevebennett9750 Před 2 lety +9

    The song is about simple communication. Particularly two people in a relationship. The man unable to express his thoughts and feelings and the woman asking "why won't you talk to me, you never talk to me, what are you thinking, what are you feeling" . At least that's what I get from the song.

  • @IanDarley
    @IanDarley Před 2 lety +9

    The tube thing is called a talk box. The sound from the guitar is sent from a speaker through the tube, you can then use your mouth to form word sounds using the guitar instead of your vocal cords.

    I’ve never understood why this hasn’t become a radio standard or whatever. The lyrics are pretty self explanatory. Steven Hawking in it, a dude that needed a computer to talk. And then the symbolism of David playing that voice box (vox?) tied in with his guitar, and no words. It’s a song that has grown on me over the years. And I am getting more of it now than before

  • @grahamnash9794

    What van be said? The bass was powerful in this song. Deep and clear. A thick underlining, that sends everything else forward, yet keeping the overall texture beautifully framed.
    Over the last few days, I've concluded that Nick Mason is a very underrated drummer. I'd not think twice about placing him high in a top ten list.
    When this was new, it opened my eyes wide. And I could see that I was so guilty of taking communication for granted. Back then, it was more a weapon, than a vital tool for keeping the peace. Look at east Europe right now, "it doesn't have to be like this if we keep talking".
    I must admit, I laughed when your expression changed into, surprise, disbelief, and curiosity all together when David had that gadget in his mouth. (Just when you thought it was safe to put on headphones, Floyd throw another wild card).
    Really cool though, isn't it?.

    It's called a Talk Box. It's an effect guitarists can use to alter the sound of the guitar. Basically it redirects the sound of the guitar from the amp into his throat, he then uses his throat and mouth to change the sound and push it through the mic

  • @Pulsar77
    @Pulsar77 Před 2 lety +1

    It's called a talk box. It's basically a tubular speaker that you put into your mouth. So the guitar sound goes into your mouth, which creates the effect that the guitar is 'talking'.

    The keyboard is called a synthesizer. These are analogue instruments before the digital age. I've been in rock bands from the age of 12 & I'm now 60 so I'll give you a quick lesson. Synths didn't have presets like modern keyboards (piano, strings, organ ect) you had to construct the sounds by adjusting oscillators, modulators, filters ect. Very popular in the 70s / 80s. The thing in his mouth is called a Vocoder or voice box. By pushing a foot switch you redirect the sound of the guitar to a small speaker in a box on the floor. The sound travels up a plastic hose into the mouth whereby you can change the tone of the guitar by shaping your mouth or even speaking. The sound is then picked up by the mic & amplified. You should really check out the whole pulse live concert for yourself. Pink Floyd are a very visual band so make sure you watch it.

  • @kyotocoversjimanderson782

    "For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals".
    "Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination-we learned to talk".
    But yet, when we look at what is currently happening in Ukraine, we can question our power to communicate effectively.
    "It doesn't have to be like this. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking". - Unfortunately, too often, "Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying".

    The "album of the week" concept is great - especially since you really should experience PF albums in their entirety - BUT, I have to say that it would be perfectly okay (and I would really recommend it) that you watch some of the other performances from this same concert - Pulse 1994 - whether you've listened to the album yet or not. "Comfortably Numb", "Sorrow", "High Hopes", "Run Like Hell" are not to be missed.

      Define 'better'. The Division Bell is probably my favourite PF album of all and I started listening to them in 1972 with Meddle. The important thing to remember is that there isn't a competition and there's certainly no prize. Everyone has their own opinion as to which albums and songs they prefer. I'd rather listen to packing foam being scraped against a window than The Final Cut, and The Wall, aside from three or four tracks, is just bloated and mediocre. So if by 'better' you mean one's you prefer, say so rather than leave it open that you might have arrived at your conclusion by some other metric.

    Unfortunately this song means way more than people realize it really means communication for the human race to not stop talking or there will be another World War if we keep up the track we're heading with blinders on the recipe for catastrophe is there on all levels now and so does my WW2 veteran family members that are still left
    It's like one my favorite songs Folks Keep Talking from my favorite bands Pink Floyd when Stephen Hawking did his famous Commercial in the 90s saying as long as Mankind keeps communicating the human race still has a chance to turn it around no matter how close we get to another catastrophic global disaster like now we face in 2023 like some of my family who faught in WW2 so this never happens again unfortunately they now see all the ingredients are again like it was in 1937 only with hypersonic nukes and way more powerful and devastating warfare weapons on terrifying scale never thought possible it's almost incomprehensible to the mass destruction this will cause you think the most disturbing and scary movie in history threads about a nuclear Holocaust with the most realistic ending in movie history about really what will happen to are human race in end
    Which is not being able to reproduce because of radiation wasteland on a apocalyptic scale that even surpasses another great WW3 ending movie on the Beach made in the 1950s where Australia was the last country standing waiting for the end of are existence again either way you look at it people like this song represents we need to keep talking or else
