- China owes its most famous beer to the Germans! Tsingtao as the beer is known comes from Qingdao (same pronunciation, the spelling is different due to two different methods of writing Chinese in the English Alphabet is the beginning of my great adventure conquering the North of China, I'd like to introduce you to it and let you all know what this journey is all about, join me as my big adventure gets underway!
Although it was to be a rather short stay for the German occupiers (they would be defeated by Japanese forces after only fifteen years) they would within this short period of time leave a sizable footprint. They built a railroad, made improvements to the harbor and even opened a shipyard (Steinmetz 438). They would also continue to establish their Christian presence through the construction of churches, and were able to construct a brewery, whose first batch of beer was finished in 1904. The brewery has continued to produce beer ever since, and has brought the city national and international recognition.

I am always amazed that someone can be recognized on the street in China, which is so vast! I'm glad that the viewers that you meet in person don't have the hateful attitude that we've heard about online. She was cute, too! And... trilingual? Cute and smart!

As far as I understand it, the Germans used to call Qīngdǎo "Tsingtao" or "Tsongtao Schi" back in the day, but it has fallen out of use and sounds very old-fashioned to me now. It's kind of cool to see that that "Germanized" pronunciation and spelling has survived in a beer brand. Love the videos - Looking forward to "Conquering Northern China"!
Qingdao is the currently accepted pinyin spelling, the previous spelling (although it may have been commonly used beforehand) was correct in postal romanization, which was introduced by the Chinese in the early 20th century as the de jure spelling for many cities, the most famous probably being Peking, Canton, Amoy and Nanking. The beer brand was created when the city name was still officially spelled as Tsingtao in all roman languages, not just German, which is why is has kept the old spelling, similar to how the football club Celtic FC is pronounced "seltic", because that was the recognised pronunciation of the word "celtic" when the club was formed.

Thank you for your comment. I used to read the name "Tsingtao" in German history books a lot and I assumed that it was the German's attempt to spell a Chinese name that they might have been unable to pronounce correctly. I wasn't aware that it was the official name in other languages as well.

Its not like western people dont do stuff like that. A friends mother has a mug that she always drinks her coffee from... on it is writen the chinese character for "tea". Or tattoos .. so many fails on this world.
But i also have to laugh about my chinese girlfriends clothing sometimes... she has a shirt with the bus from scooby doo on it. Wrinten under that: "lets take the green camping bus". That is just one example....
A guy in japan and a "japanglish" video with a lot of fails in japan... you should check that out if you got time and want some funny wtf moments.

Qingdao is my favourite city in China, went there in 2005. Very international, Qingdao Beer in bags & friendly people! ;)

My heart is breaking (with sadness bc I'm gone and with excitement bc you get to visit!) to see my beloved Qingdao, where I lived for a short two years from 2010 to 2012. Wish I could have shown you around. It's a fantastic place to visit and live. I lived right by the Olympic Village marina, downtown. Love that area, Badaguan, and so many other places. Hope you love your time there!

That's awesome you're in Qingdao. My wife is from there and I've been there quite a few times now. Such a nice city to visit and the people are so friendly. The beer is amazing, I've done the drink beer out the bag thing, it's pretty cool and interesting to see. You should go back there around July/August for the Beer festival, it's an crazy event and was huge when I was there, I know they've split of the venues starting last year but it's an amazing experience. Have a great time and keep all these great video's coming.

Hey man, I have been following you for meybe less then a year, and I must really say that despite never having been to China, and being a Serbian guy who grew up in Mexico but has benen living in Portugal almost his entire life, I clearly have the perception of you doing such an extremelly good work in describing China in a most real unbiased way.
