  • An unlikely comparison, China and The USA. I have lived in China for over 10 years, and recently had a chance to travel to America for a long roadtrip. I wanted to make a video highlighting the differences between the 2 countries in food, economy, and culture.
    Two wildly different countries. What are the differences between China and America? Safety, Food, cost of living and the people...

      I lived in China for 10 years, and to this video, i'll say almost everything he says are wrong.
      For example, he says every crime happens in China did not reveal in news. If it's not reveal in news, and he says he did not personally experienced any crime in China(says in previous video), how come he know that China is very dangerous? By just guessing?
      Another example is, in his previous videos he says in China there's no way of getting in to foreign websites, but the reality is that you only need to download an app from phone or install a hardware of your computer, then you are very free to get into every foreign websites, I see my teachers, friends and classmates in China are just so freely to go to foreign sites.
      There are just way too many wrong opinions in his videos...

    I am a criminologist/forensic psychologist in the US & I think may Europeans don't understand the violence in the US. There are two big misconceptions I see regularly.
    First off, most countries in Europe count crime very differently than the US does. Most European countries have, for example, an intent requirement before a murder is counted in the national stats. The US counts virtually everything. If one person assaults another & a person dies it gets counted as a homicide. Even self defense situations get counted. It's justifiable homicide, still goes on the books as a homicide.
    This makes the homicide rate in the US look significantly higher than most countries in Europe, when, in actuality, a good portion of that difference is simple differences in reporting practices. Now, Britain & Australia are the only other reasonably large countries that keep centralized, consistent, national records on par with the US but neither Britain or Australia allow criminologists access to actual crime reports. If we want to study Britain, we must use government supplied stats. This makes a real, apples to apples comparison virtually impossible. We can't go in & review the reports on individual murders to adjust for those differences in reporting practices.
    Officially, the homicide rate in the US is just about 4x as high as Britain. (3.9 per 100,000 in US and about 1 per 100,000 in Britain) In actuality, if we coded (counted & defined) homicide the same in both countries the rate wouldn't be nearly as lopsided. How much closer would those numbers be? Who knows. I worked at a large jail in the US & for a few months I applied what I know of British coding practices to US homicide cases & fewer than 1/2 of cases we count would get counted in Britain but my methods couldn't really be considered stringent, just a quick look at the police reports & a snap judgement. My hunch is an apples to apples comparison would yield results of the homicide rate in the US to be 30 to 50% higher than Britain but that's little more than an educated guess.
    The second thing people in Europe don't understand is violence in the US is far, far less random. Every country has a large % of their violence coming from criminal on criminal but in the US, that is highly pronounced. In the US somewhere between 75-85% of homicides stem from gang on gang or some type of criminal enterprise that can be tied to the victim. These are participatory crimes in that the victim was involved in some type of criminal enterprise that resulted in them getting targeted.
    In most countries in Europe only about 50% of homicides are participatory. The other half, roughly, are random.
    In short, if anyone wants to visit the US but is nervous about it, relax. The homicide rate isn't nearly as high as you think it is & it's highly concentrated in gang areas among gang members.
    So long as your vacation plans don't include joining a gang, you will probably be just fine. Exactly like serpentza says in his video, if you leave the questionable people alone, they will leave you alone too. If you are worried about random gun crime, just keep in mind that the criminals don't know if you have one yourself or not. If you were a criminal, would you risk getting shot to attack someone you don't know for pocket money & maybe a credit card good for 1 or 2 charges? Not to mention, just look at the numbers, 4 in 100,000 is 1 in 25,000 per year. If you don't even factor in not joining a gang those are still pretty good odds in your favor. If you stay for a month, pure statistics wise, you have a 1 in 300,000 chance of getting murdered (even less if you are female)so relax, come visit the good old USA & stuff your face. We won't murder you! Well, probably not. ;)

    The USA is a mastermind of the capitalism. If people walk, profits are lost, who will buy 2-3 cars per family and use petroleum to fill these cars, lower health means higher profits on medicine, etc. Even people who live on the border of poverty own at least one car. Everything is ordered to make people spend money. The thing that shocks me the most, you can get a meal relatively cheaply, but to buy "organic" apples 0.5kg (1lb) will cost you x2-3 as much. To eat healthy seems like a luxury.

    • @Douglas.Kennedy
      @Douglas.Kennedy Před 8 lety +10

      it's not a conspiracy, really. people like to live in the suburbs where they can have big cheap houses and big yards. you have to have a car to get to work and shopping. all the work places and shopping centers have to have big parking lots. This makes the cities very spread out, and very inconvenient to walk.
      I have to walk about a mile to buy groceries or see a restaurant. A mile of boring residential neighborhoods. If you walk a mile from your home in an Asian city like Taipei, you will pass multitudes of places to eat and shop. Your walk along the way will likely be more interesting too.
      there are dense urban areas in America too, like new York city, but the majority of the population lives in a manner that demands a car. Mostly by their own choice.

      You make a very good point here. I think that many people fail to realize just how spread out the US population is. Outside large cities, having a car is not really a luxury as many people outside the nation seem to believe: it is a necessity. I will note for those not as familiar with US customs that it is quite common for people to live in smaller cities (in large part because as you mentioned, the cost of living is much lower) and commute into larger ones, like New York and Chicago. A 'normal' commute could be more than an hour drive and be distances up to 100 km or so.

    • @coweatsman
      @coweatsman Před 8 lety

      American cities have evolved with cars such that you need a car in most American cities. Suburbia fuelled by cheap energy. The recipe for suburbia is really simple. Take a city and add energy.

    •  Před 8 lety +1

      Yeah, I understand that. But, construction ideas (housing in suburbs) came from the '60s when the great nation was "recovering" and there had to be money in the flow. But, the thing is, close to 60 years has passed, economy changed, environment changed, some things are not in abundance any more… I don’t think about capitalism in a bad light, what would people do with the money if they didn’t spend it, keep it in a bank or in socks. If they spend it, yes some will go into greedy hands but some will go into research of new technologies and thus improving the living standards. But the sad thing is, we can buy more of everything, but at the same time we are less healthy and more depressed and big houses, big cars, big meals will not help with that.

    I think this video is incredibly biased. Especially about the mass stabbing it's no way as common as the mass shooting that you would see in the states. The crime rate in China in 2010, there was 1.1 per 100000 people whereas in the US the number is 4.5. I think it's very inaccurate to base your perception purely on your anecdotes.

    • @wolfgangi
      @wolfgangi Před 8 lety +42

      Are you for real?! LOL the numbers are adjusted for the total population of the respective country. It's a standardized unit of measurement designed specifically to compare the crime rate between countries with different population size. "I still support SerpentZA's personal take on it " Yep of course you would because you don't understand simple statistics.

    • @wolfgangi
      @wolfgangi Před 8 lety +26

      Did you not read about the part where it says 1.1 per 100K people? and 4.5 per 100K? Let me walk you through this:
      Take for instance according to
      "Hans-Günther Heiland; Louise I. Shelley; Hisao Katō (1992). Crime and Control in Comparative Perspectives. Walter de Gruyter. p. 245. ISBN 3-11-012614-1."
      The total number of crimes in China in 1977 were 548,415. The total number of population in 1977 was 943.5 million.
      548,415/9435000000 = 0.000058126
      This number means on average 0.000058126 crime is committed PER PERSON. To make this figure more relevant, statisticians multiply this number by 100000, subsequently you will get 0.000058126x100000= 5.8 the interpretation of this number is that in the year 1977 the crime rate in China was 5.8 per 100K population.
      Hopefully you have elementary level of math to understand what's going on here or else I don't really know what to say to you.

    I couldn't agree with you more about the diversity in America! It's amazing that America has become this big melting pot from clothing to music, to food, art, ethnicities. It's great to interact with people who have different lifestyles and it definitely teaches us to embrace differences and change. We have more in common than we think with people who may act or look different than us.

    As an American I think you were pretty spot on correct with your “American” analysis. The weight/fat issue here is a HUGE problem & I only see it getting worse & worse :( Gun violence is real too although the people who end up being effected are usually known to the actual perpetrators, usually being the key word. Poverty is also real although very localized. Lastly Americans are an overall isolated group of people, seldom traveling outside our borders, most don’t even have a passport!

    • @sleepnomore6065
      @sleepnomore6065 Před 2 lety

      I'd say SOME don't have a passport. US is made up of immigrants, ALL of whom have passports! It's only in the pockets with little to know diversity you find people without passports. Those are usually monolingual, right-wing religious people whose views are informed by their homogeneous lives.

    • @catfishrob1
      @catfishrob1 Před 11 měsíci

      That's true about the passports. But it's really unfair because we often get compared to Europe, where the countries are as small as our western states. If they lived in a massive country, with so much diversity, that was the leading cultural force in the world, they probably wouldn't leave too often either. They can get on a train and be in a place with totally different languages and customs in two hours. In two hours, I can't even make it out of my state in a car. However, there is a lot of diversity in my state (Indian tribes, Mexican communities, heck, there's even a really active Burundian community in my city, which before I met some of them, I didn't even know was a country). Also, many Europeans have a ridiculous amount of vacation time compared to us, so it's easier, not to mention cheaper, for them to travel.
      Also, yeah gun crime is real, but most of it is driven by gang violence, as you implied. If you're an average citizen not involved in crime, your chances of getting shot just walking down the street, especially if you are cognizant of what times and places you choose to do so, is astronomically small.
      Poverty is real in the US, but our poor are better off than just about anywhere in the world. You can bring up healthcare, but it's not like any hospital is going to turn them away, and the care they'll get is quick and top-notch. They'll be in debt for a while though, certainly, but if they're already poor, not much will change. Our poor have many more luxuries than the poor in 99% of the world. Not to say it isn't an issue, but unfortunately there will always be some group of people who are lagging behind the rest, no matter how good living standards are. Nobody can ever be equal, even under communism (instead of innovators getting rich, it's the politically connected). Is there corruption in business in the US? Certainly, but by global standards, it's quite low.
      But yeah, the weight problem is serious - most of the reason we got hit hard by covid compared to some was because of our already poor health. However, that just goes to prove my point about poverty - have you noticed it's often the poor who are overweight? Yeah, part of it is that they're getting low quality processed food. (It's really not that expensive to eat a bit healthier, though. You don't have to buy all organic to eat fairly healthy. I think it's partially a cultural issue.) But the point remains that they are getting more than enough calories to survive, despite the fact they are poor. The same can't be said for most countries around the world.
      If we didn't have an obesity problem worsening all of our health metrics, the numbers would show that we probably have the best healthcare in the world - it's just way too expensive because of insurance price obfuscation and American subsidization of drug research and development (the vast majority of new drugs globally are produced here, but most countries refuse to pay enough to cover the R&D because of their single-payer healthcare systems, so the cost of that falls upon the American consumer, unfortunately).
      Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point, I just really want Americans to understand how good we have it. I had to live in a developing country to truly get it.

I don’t eat out much anymore but I have used them, and reheated the leftovers to enjoy again. One of the most striking things about the difference in food between America and many other places I've been is how conversant Americans are with the cuisines of the world. There are large thriving ethnic communities all over. This has resulted in practically everyone having access to at least somewhat authentic food from just about everywhere. (There is quite a food scene here and a quest for authenticity). Its fairly common to eat some other national cuisine at least once a week, if not daily. (I have at my lunch disposal, 3 Mexican restaurants, 2 Mediterranean, 1 Japanese, 2 Vietnamese, a Thai, and at least one burger joint, all with in 5-10 minutes walk). When I travel no matter how much I like the food in a given place, after a week or so I always need to eat something completely different.

    I have to disagree on the whole safety comparison between China and US, just because you didn't get stabbed for a week or two in US, it doesn't make America safer. The gun problems are huge in America (the shootouts are rare, but the debate about gun controlling issue have drawn a lot of attention from the media and the public), though you made a right claim of "some regions are more dangerous than some districts", but usually you wouldn't be able to predict where the gun shooting and robbery would happen. And China do report local crimes, they are usually reported online or on local TV channels (by the form of city channel like SuZhou news); of course you wouldn't find reports about stabbings, robbery on TV channels owned by the province, but larger accidents, civil crimes with serious influence will be reported. And it is really safe to go out in China at night, but there is absolutely no chance to convince me taking a walk outside in US even in some downtowns like San Francisco.

It's become trite to repeat the same refrain about guns are almost unobtainable in Chicago yet people still get them. Well people buy them from a well known gun shop in another county in Illinois and they also go across state line where there are lax gun laws. As long as gang members want to kill other gang members or even white out their entire race why should you care unless you're some sort of beneficent or philanthropist.

You fight the idea of society-imposed gender role models because you are insecure about your own. And as always, when you act based on fear, you send energy into it and help it manifest. This way the system protects itself from extremes and guides back towards balance, in a naturally painful process that gives you a crossroads choice all the time. You can focus on being a man, or you can focus on being a mature adult. One leaves you with both, the other with none. Because you never are what you're just trying to be.

    About the medical adverts on US TV. It actually isn't because of the weight problem. It is actually because the USA is one of the very few, if not the only, developed countries in the world that allows pharmaceutical companies to advertise prescription medications directly to the public. It blows most people who visit the States' minds. And really, it is weird. It would be like turning on the TV and seeing a commercial saying "Make sure your surgeon is using our high-end scalpel". Why are you telling me that? I leave that up to the knowledge and expertise of my surgeon. And that is likely the way it should be with prescription drugs. They are literally telling you to go to your doctor and tell them what is wrong with you and ask for the treatment that you want. It has created a culture where we are extremely aware of the drugs on the market and it makes them a common discussion point which takes even more power away from the licensed experts, the doctors.

      One guy here in Brazil just found a new treatment for some types of Cancer. Our government made it all to shut him, and we all know how bad is our "FDA" (they lack Science itself). It took years for him to give up. Personal idea:
    Not only have you only seen the facade of America, you have also only seen the facade of China, even though you said you have been living there for a quite long time. Some things you said are so obviously outlandish, it proves you actually know little about the society, and looks just like an outsider.
    You remind me of another African guy I had met when I was in China 2 years ago. He complained a lot and there were definitely some fear and frustration in his words. But he insisted in staying in Wuhan. He tried to date a Chinese, and wanted to buy a small apartment. He told me it was really the job that held him.
    If you do not become more positive toward your life staying in one place, there is little point staying there. Changes should be made to make yourself happy.
    Solution:
    1. Back to west.
    You have been working in Shenzhen for about 10 years, thus should be able to buy a very comfortable life easily in SA.
    2. To know the local
    Learning the spoken language and go, chat with locals. The more you do, the more you know what is beneath your guesswork. (What you can avoid easily, what you can just ignore )
    So far, still an outsider. (no offence)

    You are absolutely spot-on with the portion size explosion in the US. We've watched it creep over 35 years. The key for most people to keep their weight under control is to first, cook fresh food at home which we do most of the time. When eating out here in America, immediately cut your portion in half and only eat half; take the rest home for another meal. And of course get some exercise. Keep it simple. Don't worry about the idiot on TV selling you workouts to have six-pack abs. Just go for a bike ride, or a walk, or chop some wood. It worked for me most of my life until I got cancer, and I'm battling my way back from that - but that is a very different situation! Its easier now because my wife and I are in our late 50s/early 60s and we just split meals. Skip options for carbs like fries, chips, fried onion bushes, etc...

    American food isn't safe... you say that you are sure it's safe to eat in the US, but the amount of chemicals in all the meat and vegetables there... it's insane, the food safety there is shit.... Maybe it's because i'm from the country with highest food safety standards in the world, but to me there is no difference in food safety between the 2 countries - perhaps the hygiene is a little higher in US restaurants, but at least what you get in China is much more fresh - so it's like hygiene vs freshness, because prior to entering the restaurant, in both places the produce has been made poorly.....

      'American food' isn't healthy because it's processed. Chinese food isn't healthy because of the hygiene aspects. You have a much higher chance of getting sick in China off their food than America. Processed foods won't make you sick they'll just make you unhealthier as a whole. I say this off of experience, I got gastro twice off visiting China and Indonesia but have never gotten sick off any other countries food.

    • @miviaflower

      There is organic meat in supermarkets here, but they're more expensive than local products. As for vegetables, we have organic ones too and personally I buy them quite often. The thing about GMOs is that they don't post any health threat themselves, it's the pesticides and herbicides that do the job, but bio-engineering companies have already developed pesticide and herbicide free seeds so hopefully they will be improved soon.

    Good video and content.
    For a lot of those in the comments, an unfathomable amount of ignorance is seen. Comparing culture on a micro-level is all fine and good, which is what he is doing, but do people really think China is a better place than America to live?
    You can vote in the US. And speak your mind without being imprisoned. And the internet is not censored. And in the US, small school children are not being programmed to hate entire countries, like how Chinese children are taught in school to hate Japanese and American people. The US is also NOT currently imprisoning their Muslims for....reprogramming. (China's mass round up of its Uighur Muslims)
    The US has unalienable rights, like freedom of speech, for its citizens. No change in politician or current trend can remove the guaranteed human rights provided by the constitution. It is crazy to me that there are still places, particularity countries as large as China, that do not have something as fundamental as guaranteed civil liberties. It's truly mind blowing, and very sad.
    Chinese people have no such rights. People just "disappear " if they are controversial or hold opinions contrary to the government. Hell in just 1989, China slaughtered thousands of their own people who were peacefully protesting.
    China has massive uncontrolled pollution, new buildings that are crumbling down, cities half empty, lethal drinking water in most of the country, very few public places have toilet paper & soap, etc.
    It is sad but the Chinese people are largely slaves compared to people in the west. Kept insulated from much of the outside world through censorship and government oppression.
    America is not perfect , but even suggesting that a developing place like China is anywhere near the quality of life of America, is just sheer lunacy.

      Yeah well, city governments here depend on real estate taxes and the incentives align them, real estate agents (who work on percent-based commissions), banks (that also want a high property value--since the mortgage notes are sold off to the Federal gov anyway), assessors (who are hired by banks), and homeowners (who hope delusionally to make 20% a year and then dump the property on the next sucker before the next crash). Then throw-in others (teachers unions, which seek high valuations in cities because real estate taxes go into the educationists' coffers). It means insane, irrational, non-objective, scenarios. x*D

    As a Brit who has lived in the US for 46 years I was a little shocked at your remarks about American food.
    When I first came to the US food portions were immensely large ad the quality of the food was very good. Today that has changed DRAMATICALLY, food portion are vastly reduced and the average quality of the food is NOT VERY GOOD and prices have gone up a great deal.
    I lived in Chicago for 33 years where you could find hundreds of what were known as Family restaurants usually run and owned by Greeks. These places had good American food in large portions for very reasonable prices.
    Those restaurants are dying and being replaced by large chain restaurants with high prices and poor quality.
    I was somewhat surprised by your experiences in the US because it just clashes with what I have observed in my 46 years in America.

      Assuming that you're not just looking back at the past with rose colored glasses (we all do as we get older) I think his comparison is still valid. Sure, you may think that standards are worse now than they were 30 or 40 years ago, but comparatively they're still better than what is evidently ZERO standards in China, which was his point.

    • @brit1066
      @brit1066 Před 7 lety +1

      John Martinez No I do not have rose colored glasses and I would agree that food in the US is better than in China.
      BUT that was NOT the point I was making.
      My point is that US food in restaurants is NOT AS GOOD AS IT WAS 30 to 40 years ago, are there good quality restaurants YES are they expensive YES.
      The restaurants used by the AVERAGE AMERICAN has inferior quality and far smaller portions than 20 to 30 to 40 years ago.
      This is because the small family owned restaurants are an endangered breed, being replaced by large multi national chains.
