    I was told a funny story by a Chinese girl in the US. She grew up in China but moved to the US with her parents when she was about 18. She quickly adapted to a typical American diet, but never exercised or watched what she ate, so she gained about 15 pounds in her first few months here. When one of her grandmothers back in China saw a picture of her, she freaked out and raised Cane because she thought her granddaughter had gotten pregnant by some American guy. LOL.

      Cyril Patton - trying cutting out refined sugar (candies & desserts) and most bread/rice/pasta/couscous/tortillas, etc. from in your diet. Eat a lot of fruit if you are craving sweets. You can use modest amounts of honey or maple syrup to sweeten tea, or for plain, full or low-fat yogurt (not non-fat) & add fresh berries, Stick with lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, & veggies & a daily salad with olive oil & vinegar, or with savoury homemade dressings. Vary the salad ingredients often to keep it interesting. Consume a variety of cheese, olives & raw unsalted almonds/pecans/walnuts (not peanuts). Don’t starve yourself, Stay full & you can eat a lot of all this, but just avoid at least 95% of the breads & sugary stuff. Frozen berry smoothies using water/ice with a modest amount of maple syrup is a healthy treat between meals once a day, also. This seems to work for a lot of people I know. Hope it works for you too! If you cheat once a day with 2 or 3 bites of bread a day, it can still work. Try it out and adjust the amounts as necessary according to the results you receive.

    Being a Chinese Canadian I totally agree with the part about how Chinese are with commenting about body weight. For women we are told we are fat way before a guy would be told and it’s terrible because A lot of my female friends have eating disorders (undiagnosed but I know the signs). But in China eating disorder (and mental disorders in general) are not recognized and seen as weakness or being too sensitive. In the past most people were thin because there wasn’t a lot of food to go around but now it’s mostly social pressure that keeps people thin. I don’t buy the whole high metabolism. You cannot eat unhealthy foods all day and expect a high metabolism to save you. In terms of exercise, people don’t work out in gyms or go for a run but daily life is a lot more physical and people walk a lot more than in Canada.

      "I don't buy fast metabolism"
      Science doesn't care what you buy. It's gives you the facts and you have to accept them wether or not you like it. Having a fast metabolism means you burn off more then you can consume while feeling satiated and when youre skinny the body's hormones are adapted to maintain the homeostasis. I literally eat fast food nearly everyday and have not gained weight in years. He's right but you can't admit it.

I was stopped in the supermarket, on the street and on the bus ride home with "you stacked on the weight" and "you are now much bigger". I'd like to add a few things from my experiences:
    - If you are fat, you'll have problems finding clothes that fit. After 4 months of losing weight and actually starting to look fit for once in my life, I treated myself by buying a new dress shirt. In North America, before losing weight, I was a Large, in China, after losing weight, I was XXL or XXXL by their standards :)
    - besides the extra exercise, I've noticed not as many people have fridges in China. Without a fridge, you don't eat as much meat or dairy, and you have to go to the grocery store much more often (in my case by bike).
    - people pointing out weight gain is so real, but what's especially crazy is how perceptive people are. It barely takes one pound for people to start pointing it out. Meanwhile, for me, someone would need to gain maybe 10 or 15 for me to notice.

    • @SpeakEverydayEnglish
      @SpeakEverydayEnglish Před 8 lety +4

      +xinyiquan666 Talking about height, Chinese people, too, have traditionally been regarded as shorter than their western counterparts. I know that average heights in the south of China are shorter than those in the north, but in central China, where I live, I teach in a senior middle school, and very few of the male students, and even a minority of the female students, are short. I notice this in particular because I am a short Australian guy, and most of the students are considerably taller than me. I truly believe nutrition plays a major part in it. In the 20th century, including the war years and the years of Mao's Cultural Revolution food was in short supply, so meal choices were limited. However, my shortness is genetic, because my diet growing up was very healthy, but both my parents were short.

    I've been watching your videos for a while and refer to you as by my younger son's name because you are so much like him. This story of your being fat must have something to do with it. My son was the exact same way.
    Lack of opportunity for outdoor activity and a dissatisfaction with life in his teens created a good deal of excess weight. We talked about it quite a bit and he was in great distress. Then, all on his own, he began the project of a sort of rebirth. He was always an amazing cook and he used his skills to create far better food choices. He exercised religiously. Over several months he lost 100 lbs./45 kg and never went back.
    I mention this because he is the kindest, most considerate person I've ever known and you strike me as similar. We bear up under our own particular challenges and become better people for it. Keep up the good work.

    It's really not generics, I'm Chinese and I can get fat really easily in the US. In China, your always walking around, doing activities, going to places, your always doing something. In US, your sitting down at the house watching TV, eating and so on, when you go out, your sitting in your car, when your at your destination, your probably looking for a place to sit down first, my point is in the US your always sitting! I visited China and ate 6 meals a day and actually lost 20 lbs in 3 months because I'm always up and about. And of course the diet is an issue too but that comes in second in my opinion.

      I agree with you. In China the public transit is more developed and convenient that most people walks to transit, walk to buildings and so on. In NA, people do not bother waiting 30 mins for a bus, instead just drive from A to B and that is it. In a day, i think average Chinese walks much more steps than an average American. Overall, life style is the key. Diet comes second. Besides, all these align with science.

When you go out on the evening there's many people hanging out, there's music and there's kids rollerblading. Fun family evening walk. I mean would the author prefer it to be quiet or something? if you're easily offended, and you're coming to china, you're going to hate it. not learning the language won't save you, as people will say the exact same things in english. i think part of the issue isn't just the culture, it's how they see western culture. (every country not in asia is referred to as the west, regardless of actual direction). they think that we are much more open in what we say to each other with regards to sex, politics, or any other random subject, so they can't understand that we'd be offended by anything that is said to us.

      +Illinois is BROKE. Because these days most of our salary don't go to buying food every month. Now you're wealthy/successful if you have(take, really) the time to work out, have a lot of free time, can travel, etc.
      And a lot of the food that is considered non-boring and have a nice taste is cheap while the healthy and often considered boring food cost more.

      +Mycenaea the standard that they hold for westerners and the standard that they hold for themselves is totally different. part of the problem right now is all of the fast food restaurants, Macdonald's, KFC, etc.
      however, many still see fat men as successful businessmen, and therefore rich, because of the Chinese Alcohol Culture, i think. if you're going to work all day, then going to the bar, KTV, etc to do business deals and drink yourself into oblivion and smoke crazy strong cigarettes, you're not going to be working out either.
      the idea that successful businessmen are skinny because they have time to go to the gym i think is a new one. if you're over a certain age, and have a "beer gut", in some ways that makes you very desirable in China. However, people will still call you fat constantly, point at you, etc. so, there's positives and negatives, i suppose...

If you consider this population as inbreeding, I can not imagine how bad it is for places like Britain or Korea in the past.
      Throughout history, China is actually friendlier to outside countries than rest of the world. It's one of the few places where trading with other countries (e.g. rome, persia, neighboring asian countries) existed throughout the century and I don't think any places other than China allow foreigners to hold government post before the modern age.

    • @cosmonaut379
      @cosmonaut379 Před 7 lety +7

      No, it doesn't.... China as it is is extremely diverse. Historically even more so with genetic diversity..... China is a genetic mixing pot of east asians, south east asians, Indian people, slavs, central asians and middle eastern people and also europeans. Compare that to most european nations. England and france especially didn't blend with slavic or scandinavian people for a looooooong time vs. people in eastern europe who were exposed to all varieties of central europeans and slavic people and traders from the east, that's why so many models come out of eastern europe because they have so many unique traits that pop up. Try reading some stuff about basic history and learn about China. (countries with large trade routes and hubs tend to be much more diverse) They also aren't "extremely hostile" to foreigners especially for as long as the country existed lol China was always a nation looking to trade with other people and marriage of leaders of both groups of people was extremely common and sometimes almost a requirement, compare that to England...... also China along with the Netherlands basically invented international trade.....

      This guy gets it, the other dude's an idiot, he's the reason why people look at americans badly. But yeah the chinese tend to actually need less vision correction then most european countries other then eastern europe. The ones who need glasses tend to have near sightedness if I remember right but the real reason you see so many glasses is that not many people wear contacts. People would be really surprised if they knew how many people they know that wear contacts and they never had an idea. In the west people tend to want to hide what they see as their genetic faults which is a central theory of the huge amount of makeup, contacts, and hair dyeing while in China they tend to not see it that way, they are pretty chill with how they look and if they need glasses so be it.

    Just to clarify, sometimes when someone comments: '...你胖了’ or '...胖了点‘ can actually be a compliment or just neutral, implying you had a great time or ate really well. I would say '肥’ is more derogatory (but even that depends on the situation). But '胖子‘ or '胖胖' can actually be an endearment term in some cases.
    On the contrary to say 'you lost some weight', can imply they're concerned about you, as in are you over working yourself? Are you feeling well? Or they're just worried about your general health.
    A lot of these direct comments, are not really meant to insult, more like an observation so people don't see why it's bad to point it out, considering they don't think it's that bad.

I always felt like I was outside of my peer group, never hung out with school mates or shared their interests. Now I'm a polite and knowledgeable person with a mental blockage against any relationships or friendships. I think what we don't like about negative comments is that they point out a problem without being oriented on finding solutions to them. And that makes those comments rude, because they are not expressed to help someone, but to entertain oneself or ridicule the respective person. Sure finding the problem is the first step to solving the problem, but most times the problem is blatantly obvious to the affected person and there's a complex situation causing the problem to persist.

    Very true. When we toured China with an American Aviators group the average age in this tour was 65 and most were quite overweight. We were thin as with a few of our friends who also spoke Mandarin. They commented on the fact that the Chinese people called us a herd of elephants whenever we were on the move. As a group I think perhaps they were right.

  • @lauriejennifer
    @lauriejennifer Před 9 lety +17

    I liked that I wore larges and extra larges in China. I felt like a "normal sized" person, and I get teased a lot in America for being so thin, and have my whole life. I also have a high metabolism. The only downside to needing a large or extra large is that I had to actually try on clothes before buying them, because I didn't know which size would fit me. In America, I always just buy the smallest size available.
    It's so true about the cultural difference. Excellently presented. Interestingly, Americans consider South Africans to be very direct, compared to ours. So, for you to consider Chinese culture more direct... Well, that's saying something!
    Alas, I cannot experience being fat, for health reasons. But, I get ridiculed for being so skinny in America. I was bullied for it in school. I still get mocked for it as an adult, as it is considered "okay" to say what you think, as long as the person isn't "fat."

    As a fat white guy in China, I can confirm a lot of this. But I do think diet has just as much an impact, if not more of an impact, than genetics for why Chinese people are so thin. I also think the reason for the increase in fat Chinese kids lately is partially due to China becoming more Westernized, with more Western fast food joints popping up. As a fat guy in China, I have been able to lose a fair bit of weight just by eating less Western foods and eating at Chinese restaurants. I always did a fair bit of walking because I've never owned a car in Canada either, so the diet is really the only difference.
    Also, it surprised me when you said exercise is not a big part of their life. I live in Northern China, but exercise is big here. The students at my school are required to run laps around the field every day. I have started joining them now because I'm trying to lose even more weight, and I am far more exhausted than they are afterwards. They are in fantastic shape.
    Also, people will feel your belly if you are fat. Just reach out and feel. It's a bit strange, but you get used to it.

      I see. I come from a pretty rural area, and I see more gyms here than where I'm from in Canada, so I didn't notice. There are at least two just a block from my school. But I'm comparing a capital city in China to a small town in Canada, so it's not a fair comparison. So this may be true. Thank you.
      And yes, I'm loving my time here. I have a pretty thick skin, so it doesn't bother me that everyone points out that I'm fat. I just laugh and say yes I am. :P

    Growing up in an Asian family, all my family and relatives are really frank. If you're fat they'll say it, or if there's any other features. It's a conversation piece, not something out of malice. The issue with the PC culture in the west is that they emphasize how a person on the receiving end MIGHT feel, rather than the actual intent of the person speaking. The issue with this is that there are people who might get offended no matter what you say, especially with more people demanding trigger words be censored in western schools.

    • @samuelrs5138
      @samuelrs5138 Před 7 lety +35

      LOL, you are insulting many asians by grouping them in with the Chinese. All asian nations hate the Chinese, even the Chinese hate themselves in many instances. The Chinese and Koreans hate the Japanese, but they respect them deeply, not so with the Chinese as it's just plain hatred. Go to Hong Kong even and talk to the Chinese there, you will hear all about how they hate the "mainlanders," and want to literally bar them from being able to come into Hong Kong. They continually keep trying to push more and more legislation through that bars mainlanders from stepping foot into Hong Kong.
      So what is it they hate? It's not even about the whole fat thing, as that's pretty much the opinion of all asians even though many nations' peoples would never be so rude as to redicule people to their faces. That rudeness extends to every facet of the Chinese personality. They don't care at all about you, your health/wellbeing, your personality property or your basic human rights.
      They do not care at all if you are injured or could be injured from something they are doing. They will not slow down in traffic for pedestrians but except you to run or get run over.
      If they have to poop or pee, they will pull down their pants and poop/pee no matter how public it is. If you went to a major Chinese city and spent a day just travelling their subway system, you will have the pleasure of watching at least a few Chinese people pooping and peeing right in front of you. For parents, they will have their kid poop and pee right in front of you, almost daring you to be disgusted by it. They routinely will allow their children, especially male children, to pee in water fountains that are open for the general public to drink out of.They will do it inside of shops, including grocery stores. I have seen myself a few Chinese women pull up their dress/skirt in a grocery store isle, and proceed to leave a huge pile of shit in the middle of the floor.
      If a Chinese person is drowning in China, they had better hope a Westerner is in the crowd because Chinese people will not even want to dirty their clothes to save someone's life. That's not a joke, they will just stand there and watch.
      They do not give a shit about you or your personal property. If they damage anything of yours it is *ALWAYS* *ALWAYS* *ALWAYS* your fault and they will call the police to try to make them "fine" (pay the citizen money) literally on the spot.
      Pretty much literally every single driver in China has dash cams facing the front and back, because many Chinese people make insurance fraud/extortion their career! Many will even do it on a whim if the opporotunity arises. Many old Chinese people will fall, and not a single Chinese person will help them up because this time it's for good reason!!!! There are tons of old Chinese people prowling the streets, pretending to have just fallen, and the first person who tries to thelp them up they will accuse of pushing them down, then they will alert the police and extort you, especially if you are a Westerner but they have no problem doing it to naive Chinese people or Chinese people who aren't shitbags and will actually help someone in need.
      If you were about to starve to death or die of dehydration imminently, China is by far the world's worst place to be. Someone couldhave their life saved by a cup of water or die in an hour without it but if you are on the doorstep of a Chinese person they will beat you with a broom until you die or leave their property. Generally they would use a hose to shoo you away, but in this case that'd help you so they can't have that be!
      Chinese people are by far the most racist people on earth. When he talked about getting a tan (a *HORRIFIC* calamity in almost every asian nation) and having people tell him he looked more "black," that wasn't an innocent comment whereby they were only commenting on the literal color change in your skin, but they are saying you look more like an African person and that is a huge insult. They really, truly view black people as a sort of sub-species of humanity. There are a very few personal exemptions to this and in such instances they talk about how 'non-black' the black person is. They love Barack Obama, and will talk about (in non-scientific terms) basically about how his intellect is due to his white mother.
      Then you have their culture of theft (of which their fraud and extortion should come as no surprise) where they steal anything not nailed down. There are no public restrooms in China, why? Because the Chinese will steal even the toiliet paper, towels and soap. They will even steal the toilet paper holders, that is NOT a joke or exaggeration. The few public restrooms you can find in China, usually by Western companies, will constantly have their toilet paper holders missing in the stalls. Then there's all the intellectual theft. Their stealing of everything that is copyrighted and trademarked. Their government sponsered stealing of industrial secrets of other nations. They even steal names of companies to try to fool consumers. They will steal the font of companies names, then use names close to the original one to fool people. They will have so many prestigious Western faces plastered all over their wares, endorsing every product they sell, which is a total lie and sham.
      You have all the dead babies, especially female infants, found all over China. Western charities are constantly sponsoring baby drop boxes, whereby you basically place an unwanted (aka female) child into it and there's someone on the other side waiting to take care of it. But if an area doesn't have these they will be thrown into the closest river. That's not a joke or an exaggeration. It is an extremely serious topic in China these days.
      I love Japan. I love South Korea. I love Thailand. They are notghing like China and the Chinese. I even love Hong Kong, and understand why they hate their fellow countryman and don't even want them in their city, let alone to actually be associated with them as they are forced to be now. Go look at opinion polls, the people of Hong Kong actually want to be a UK foreign possession again. They have huge parades every year for the last british leader of hong kong, last time it turned into a huge anti-beijing protest of about 100k youths that lasted months and had to be put down by the Chinese military.

    IMHO, the best way to control your weight is to get on a scale and weigh yourself everyday and record it. When you see a 1 pound increase over your weight goal you can eat less immediately and get back on track. Without the scale and records you might gain an unexpected 5 pounds (2.3kg), and that becomes quite difficult to lose. I'm older than dirt right now, but my weight is only 5 pounds more than when I was in high school!

    Here's my fat phase experience. I was larger than my peers as a kid. But gulping down junk food after I migrated to the US at the start of my teenage years really assimilated my body to the general population. For the first 3 years in college, I only had time for books as I was shooting for the chance to transfer to one of the top school to study engineering, which I did.
    When 2008 rolled around, I lost my job and thought about joining the Navy as an officer. My recruiter assigned someone who was sitting at home waiting for his slot at flight school to work with me. Although I didn't get in due to my age and the Navy already had enough young people applying, I did drop quite a bit of weight.
    When I was working in China, my colleagues were advising me to slow down on my bike because I was pedaling faster than electric ones. I'd carry a suit case up stairs at a train station rather than cramp into escalator with a bunch of girls and boys carrying nothing but purses. Something about your body never goes back after your fat phase. I cannot buy pants in China and Hong Kong because those calves that took me on my uphill jogs just would not fit into straight cut pants

    Yes! That's a problem in Japan, where I live. The more you know the language, the ruder the people get. And it's also because they have no reason to use you for your English anymore. And they are terribly jealous people. Jealous that I can speak Japanese. So that's the thing. You'll see interviews of people on vacation here and the majority of them say that there's no racism, but once you learn the language... it's like they have no use for you anymore.

    Winston, I relate well to your observations. In 2004, I was in China to bring home my adopted daughter from NanFeng. When we did the obligatory official Great Wall visit in Badaling, I was pointed at and poked in the stomach by the local yokels who showed up to visit from the countryside. They were also the ones pissing in the watch towers. The 2nd visit a year ago in June, I could still sense that I was being stared at and pointed at, but I knew the comments and looks that were coming although I didn't understand them. I am 175 cm and about 170 kg, but I get around just as easily as the skinny ones. I don't act unfit, but awareness of my presence from all the people around me was noticeable and creepy.
