Why is eating dogs any different from eating cows, pigs etc? Simple, dogs are purposefully tortured to death in China, cows, pigs, chickens etc are killed quickly and relatively painlessly, that's the difference. If you want to see the awesome side of China, the fascinating culture and scenery that isn't related to killing man's best friend, check out our awesome documentary: www.vimeo.com/ondemand/conqueringsouthernchina Discount code: STAYAWESOME

If they were not tortured to death would there be any issue at all? I think most people who are against eating dog are only against it because of the "mans best friend" mindset and use the torture as a foothold to stop it (which is perfectly fine no animal should ever be tortured). Just curious on your opinion if they were bred like cows/pigs/chickens would we all still have a problem with the consumption of dog?

"Man's best friend." emmmm, a very western centered statement. Imagine an Hindu walking around South Africa and saying how horrible are the South Africans, they eat cows! I can't stand it! Please do not apply your culture and ideology on another, it may only shows your illusional moral superiority. In Chinese idioms, dogs are portrayed overwhelmingly as a creature with negative connotations. Ex: 狼心狗肺(The heart of a wolf and the lung of a dog), meaning rapacious as a wolf and savage as a cur; 狐朋狗友(Make friends with dogs and foxes), meaning being friends with the wrong type of people; 鸡犬不宁(Fowls and dogs are not in peace), meaning something causing a big chaos. And the list goes on. If "dogs are purposefully tortured to death" while other animals are not, you argument should be dogs deserve to be "killed quickly and relatively painlessly" as well, and most of Chinese people will agree with you. Most of people on earth against animal cruelty.

not everyone torture them. the main reason they beat them is, killing a chicken is very easy, there're machines and tools for killing cows and pigs, but there's no machine that has been invented to kill dogs, and dogs are dangerous. and quite often, those who kill dogs are often those who steal them. and, a certain religion is questioning: do western people eat pigs? and, how bulls are treated in spain even though they have certain machines to kill them rapidly? and, do australian really eat cute kangaroos?

The most disturbing part for me in the video wasn't seeing the dog carcass. It was watching those guys hop a wall and take some family's pets. Can't imagine coming home and seeing that footage knowing that my poor dogs were beaten, slaughtered and served to some villager for an appetite whim or to balance their chi. Lived in Taiwan for almost 20 years and fortunately saw 20 years worth of gradual improvement in attitudes towards animals -- dogs more so than cats. (Though that was improving, too.) This necessary cultural shift in China can't happen fast enough for me. BTW, took in a stray kitten in 2007 and brought it with me when I moved back to the US in 2014. After watching your video, I'm going to have to go give her a pet. That said, it's almost noon here and the lazy bum hasn't gotten up yet...

So, as long as the dogs are not "pet dogs", I think people can still eat them anyway. You know, just like some people love to have pigs as their pet, but still others can enjoy bacon and sausage Because I do not see the difference between a dog and a pig.

As Winston said during the video, it's mostly just cultural. In the west(I'm Australian), dogs have a history of being a pet, or a working animal. They help herd sheep, or even help the vision impaired to live their lives. Probably for that reason, we, as westerners, probably can't associate dogs with food. The whole thought just makes me cringe, and I want to go n give my little one a great big hug right now. She really is a part of my family.

I was stationed in the Philippines in the 70's. When you were eating there was one simple rule, never ask what kind of meat are you being served. If you weren't eating fish, pork or chicken you were eating dog. I used to go to a bar that had taco Thursday, order a beer and get free tacos. The last time I went with a buddy we had downed a few beers and eat a plate of tacos. The waitress asked if we wanted more tacos and my buddy asked what kind of meat was used and she answered in her native language. He didn't understand and she said you know arf arf. The tacos were good but that was the last time we went to taco Thursday.

@@theshockerpit7274 if you're using that argument, China could be exempted as well. Dog eating has occurred in most cultures in East Asia, including Vietnam and Korea. The reason China is so known for it is because it got increasingly popular there during the famines in the 1970s and 1980s where there was a lack of food. Since then it has caught on with the Chinese who are already desensitized to that kind of stuff. This is why China has never been known for prominently eating dogs throughout its history, and even the Yulin dog eating festival came about in 2009. During this time, the other nations like Korea were becoming more and more western and eventually outlawed the eating of animals while China still allowed it.

  • @rob4b

Don't ever go to Yulin dog market. I couldn't handle it, I attacked a couple of traders there, I had to be escorted by the police away and nearly thrown in jail, I lost the plot. What is disgusting is the totally unnecessary suffering of the animals and how they slaughter them. Some boiled and skinned alive, from that moment on I decided I was going to leave China after considering living there with my now Chinese wife, that was in 2007. I heard that the dog meat market has expanded even more now. This experience had such a profound effect on me I also became a vegetarian from that day on and still am today. My Chinese relatives still find this very odd even today. I did leave China a year later and now live back in England.

I don't have any problem with eating a dog, necessarily... but I think it's somewhat questionable to eat the meat of a predator animal, as it encourages raising animals for meat farming. This process requires animals to be confined to small and undesirable conditions, which is torturous for an intelligent carnivore. However, one thing I DO have a problem with is animal torture... I once saw a video of Chinese men torching a dog's face while holding the dog by the neck with a pair of tongs. It was fucking disgusting and kept me from sleeping well for a few days. It filled me with such disgust it is almost beyond comprehension. Those people should have their testicles brutally ripped from their bodies.

I see in the comments that the "eating dog its like eating any other animal" is a very popular opinion and I disagree, here is why:
Dogs are not called "mans best friend" for no reason, they have pretty much being the reason of our incredible advance as a spices since the nomad life of our ancestor, they had helped us hunt, protect out farms and livestock (thousands of years ago pretty much every continent had his shepherd dog variant) dogs are a fundamental part of our history and have evolve to understand us and communicate with us, they understand our facial expressions and voice tonalities a dog is not just some animal, they have put their trust in us and we on them. To eat them (let aside torture them) is inhumane, is betray that inter- species relationship formed 30 thousand years ago its just horrible and cant be put in the same box as cattle, pig or any other animal

    • @kynchan3332
      @kynchan3332 Před 4 lety +9

Dogs, cows, horses, pigs, sheep, chicken etc are examples of domesticated animals that have been selectively bred to have characteristics we want. The ancient Chinese rated the cow very highly and hence did not eat it very often because it was needed to plough the fields, rather like some use a horse or now a tractor. Pigs tended to mature very quickly and were considered a good food. In addition pigs are very good at digging for foods hidden in the ground, some peoples used pigs to find truffles. Dogs were employed as guards to warn of thieves.
If you want to make the moral case for putting dogs ahead of other animals don't harm any of them to be consistent. Really it is just an emotional thought to protect one animal species and not another. Nor can you ever be fully morally right as everything you do, use and occupy has harmed animals in some way - eg farming, infrastructure development, pollution (going into the land, air and water) and the list goes on.

Chinese people have even been injured when shopping for pork and there was a shortage.

Kitti Kat corona was found out about in a lab and yes I agree with dogs helping us advance but we’re forgetting that if there was nothing to hunt it would be useless,if you don’t get what I’m trying to say,I’m trying to say that ,considering how much animals such as cows and pigs effect our daily life’s we should really care for them,examples;1:During ancient nomad times the way people lived was by making houses out of cow fur and to not die they would kill cow and eat it meaning if cow didn’t exist we probably wouldn’t even be alive.2:Cows and pigs are used in so many industries such as clothing, food, entertainment(eg.Zoo’s) and the reason you even have strong bones is most likely because of cows,3:They were here before dogs and it’s not fair that when humans came along we killed them however the part of the Chinese tradition I disagree with is when they torture the dogs, that is extremely cruel.

serpentza - I appreciate all your videos. Thank you for doing such a great job on covering China and Chinese culture. That said, I think "staying on the fence" as you mentioned in this video is counter productive to making the world a better place for both animals and humans. Although eating Dog meat in China is a cultural or traditional practice for some, the cruelty involved, as you mentioned (beating a dog to death, boiling a dog to death, torturing a dog before you kill it, stealing pets for consumption) is an act that can't be tolerated anywhere on the earth regardless of cultural conflicts. Cruelty in any form cannot exist if the human race is to move forward in the next step towards the betterment of our species. I know you do not like to get political in your videos, but I implore you to always condemn cruelty in your videos and not sit on the fence when organizations like No Dogs Left Behind ask for your help. The more we stand up against cruelty in the world, the more likely it will be less tolerated by all.

Totally agree. Just saying that for the person casually viewing this video without knowing too much about Winston's travel or the reality of the infrequency of dog meat eating, the first few minutes of this video paints a different picture that much later on is addressed. Translate This - I believe this topic is especially incendiary and strongly stokes emotions for many people. I would say that the majority of people don't eat dog and especially do not approve of the extreme cruelty that other videos show (thankfully not this one - the dognapping aside). One needs to sit through this entire video in order to see how the village majority does bring some justice against these loathsome gangs. By then, however, some viewers may have already been had their racist views confirmed or been insulted. Careful of that human search engine...

When we were younger we would ask Asians that moved to our country if they ate dog meat and those that were stupid enough to say yes we beat to within an inch of their lives, sport beatings and when reports came in on the news about dogs disappearing in certain neighborhoods we would go there find out who had recently moved in from China or Vietnam. We would pay them a visit and once they admitted to it we would again beat them and cut off a hand. When word got out that we were looking for them the dogs stopped disappearing from these neighborhoods. Many Chinese and Vietnamese don't eat dogs and told me that when those that did arrived in the US or Canada all they saw was free meals walking down the street.

Skinning and boiling a puppy ALIVE (which is equivalent to skinning and boiling a human toddler) is insane, merciless, barbaric and monstrous. I lived in southern China in early 60s. Beef was $10/lb. My family bought like 4 oz to cook as flavor. One could buy life dog for $1/lb. So it was much cheaper to eat dog than beef for the nutrient. A 15 lbs puppy would feed our family for days.
People living in the farm never had chance to eat beef because they were not available. They often raised dogs for food.

The Korean are indeed culturally more famous in eating dog meat. The history of the west protesting the east about eating dog actually started against the Koreans, when they were about to host the Seoul Olympics in 1980s. As you duly pointed out in the video, the Chinese are traditionally agrarian people that didn't have a special historical tie with the dogs as the more or less pastoral European people in the past. However, the northern Chinese, historically influenced by the northern nomadic minority, did feel more strongly to the dogs than the southerners do. The Koreans are however not sharing this feeling. So it is fair to say that in the north, the dog-eating practice is more a Korean influence.
Personally, as a proper southern Chinese, I do not share your feeling with the dogs. I would not refuse a dog hot pot if offered although I had it only once in my life. I am indeed against the torturing and illegal capture of any animals, not just dogs.

I don't actually think it is against the law to eat dog or cat in Australia, (my country) or any Western country. I know the aborigines up North eat cats, it is the first good thing to happen since feral cats took hold up there. The thing is we have a culture where dogs and cats are friends, not food. I have had companion rabbits for years now. It is interesting to me how abhorrent the idea of eating rabbit has become to me, despite the fact I both killed and ate rabbits when I was younger and on the farm. Indeed our farm cat who transitioned to the city and who used to massacres rabbits and all small creatures on the farm, also came to love and adore rabbits once she lived with one and the rabbit even broke her of bird killing. What's more I saw after that rabbit suddenly was killed by another neighbourhood cat, that she immediately adopted and loved the next one who came along and I doubt she'd ever have been able to think of any rabbit as food again. That's how universal it is. Not just humans but animals too can find a new paradigm in accepting other sentience as no longer food, but people like us. It is cultural. I myself have begun to pull away from eating meat due to gradually coming to recognise the same sentience and feelings, the most basic important stuff, in all living creatures. I'm off mammals now and birds are starting to seem too much like people to me these days. Also I've seen things in fish, just small aquarium fish I have kept, which have me wondering about them too. I'm not vegan .. yet ... but I get it. Culture is powerful and more like the current of the river. Not something you can really fight against without meeting eternal resistance and eventually being worn out. I make personal changes and leave the societal ones to sort themselves out as people evolve, or not.

It is legal to eat dog meat in these countries:
      1. China (although it’s legal to consume dog meat, it’s against Food Safety Law to sell dog meat)
      2. India (although illegal but consumed in eastern states)
      3. South Korea
      4. Vietnam
      5. Philippines (third most consumed meat; although temporarily banned under the British pressure; the British government also bombed and killed Chinese in order to sell heroin when the Chinese people banned heroin)

      8. France (during food shortage)
      9. Germany (during every major crisis; prohibited since 1986)
      10. Netherlands (during food shortage)

      12. Slovakia (Europe’s only dog eating festival)
      13. Switzerland (dogs and cats are eaten)
      14. Canada
      15. USA (uncommon since the native Americans were wiped out; but in early 20th century, widely consumed because of meat shortage)

although i dont eat dogs, the westerners who would campaign against eating dogs would have no problems with foie gras in their countries, double standard,as always

yeemynn Zhou dogs were bred specifically for hunting or companionship. Hundreds of Generations of dogs bred with the express purpose of serving humans. It’s fucked up because we bred them to be companions

How is it fucked up? What makes you think goat and pigs are bred just for consumption? In Hindu culture, cow is treated like a god and mother. But, in west it is just the opposite. So, leave your judgment at home when you look upon other culture.

But the animals in the west have been bread for consumption. Hence why cows are white with black spots and huge udders (and not brown with long fur), or why chickens are double the size they was 50 years ago, and why the pigs we eat aren't huge wild animals which could rip your face off at any moment, but fat pink things with lots of meat.

Citizen Smith Freedom For Tooting. Uh not the same thing. Its wrong to the West to eat dog, its wrong to Indians to eat cow/meat in general, etc. Who the hell is right then? Fact is, what one person believes is not the universal truth

I didn't know foie gras was a thing. I didn't know that torturing dogs to death for food was a thing either.

Eating any animal is fine, as long as it is treated right, and killed as quickley as possible. It would piss me off to watch someone kill a dog as that is not common in America. But in some countries they would freak out if you killed a cow. I like eating beef, as long as it was not abused.

God this video reminds me... when i was 11 years old I STUPIDLY clicked on a video of a dog being skinned alive by two chinese men. I don't know when or where this was but, I've been scarred since.
