I’m a 16 year old who just bought my first car a few months ago it’s a 1.8l 1994 Miata. When I bought it I knew it had some oil leaks on the front of the engine after saving enough money I finally started to order parts and tools. After watching this video for the 20th time I started to take things out and put the new parts in. It took me a total of about 20 hours over four days (5 hours per day) to complete the task. This is also the first time I worked on my car other than just a oil change. Thank you so much for this video it was a real life saver whenever I forgot where something went or could not get something off like the alternator/water pump belt. I am sure if you are mechanically inclined and have worked on cars before you could do it in half the time it took me but I am very happy with the results of my project and I very much appreciate the video Greg.
You have courage young man! Congratulations!
Every adventure starts with a step.
Nice job man !
Much respect!! You are a credit to and a positive example of the younger generation!! Stay curious young one!
dude. congrats. really. congrats.
you want to know what I think? I think that was pretty much the definitive Miata MX5 belt, seals, water pump video on CZcams (that I am aware of). Too Long? No. Informative? yes . Commentary was concise and to the point, and excellently filmed, too. Well Done. And thanks for taking the time. ps Loved the Austin Powers quote, and once I figured out where you were going with it; Loved the intro too.
I agree best video for this job. Lighting and audio and camera was great too. You saw exactly what he was talking about and where it was located.
I agree too! hands down best video! keep up the awsome work!
Except, like SO many others, he did not tension the timing belt correctly. Hate to think HOW MANY have followed this bad tutorial.
@@steves6767 Ok, Steve, so please share your knowledge about how to tension it properly (or a link to a video please if you have already done so)!
Love the "while you're in there, may as well replace it all"... agree totally...
i don't say this often, but this has got to be one of the BEST tutorials ive ever seen on youtube. you deserve a lot more subs.
Well I followed every single step all day long and mine is not starting! Yay! Thanks….
Just my opinion here, but I LOVE the in-depth videos! I'd much rather have a longer video with attention to detail than a shorter run time any day. Keep up the good work!
I used this video to perform this service on my Miata. Thank you for the excellent step by step guide. You helped me save 700 bucks. This took me around 9 hours of work and I am not a great mechanic. If anyone is on the fence, this is entirely possible to do on your own with basic tools.
6years after posting this vid , still helping many Miata people out .. 👍 thank you man
I know everyone has said but but holy cow this guide is perfect. No unnecessary ramblings. You clearly are familiar with the job and kept it to the point and easy to follow.
loved it. i only see one problem
i dont have an mx5 yet :(
+supraking85 Sameeeee
its killing me, i used to own one. stupidly let it go. and am now on the hunt for another. only problem is i want an import vspec in brg. and its proving bloody hard to find one
+supraking85 yeah the brg ones are rare and sought after for sure! gorgeous though. probably my favorite color
yup, abit more classic looking
I am pursuing a 1994 M edition.
guys like you with solid references make CZcams great.
I just did my water pump / timing belt with my laptop at my side,
playing this video. I referred to it more than the service manual! You
have made my biggest DIY car repair job a breeze. Thank you for all of
you excellent videos, IMHO the Miata community is lucky to have
you.
This video is so detailed and straight to the point. It is by far the best video I've come across for the MX5 timing belt & water pump.
Thanks for the good work sir!
I've admittedly gotten myself in a little over my head grabbing a Miata with plans to work on every single piece by myself with help from a master tech with very limited time on both our hands, but this video has helped me make sure I've found a shop that wasn't going to wallop me on the pricing of labor when I've already purchased the part. Had a shop that is well rated that does mods, dynos, body work, paint, and all sorts of other fun odds and ends for enthusiasts and they quoted me on the job and came back with some strange estimates. They came bak at about $750 to replace the timing belt and the water pump which is about par for the course around me (I had that done to my Subie recently that *didn't* also get a timing belt redone) but then they added on $81 for replacing the valve cover gasket, $61 for replacing the thermostat, among other charges for literally every other piece that is not the timing belt or water pump to the tune of often $30= minimum, implying ~20+ minutes each if their labor rate is $100/hr.
So while I haven't had the time to do this myself, I was able to find a shop that was willing to do the work that also didn't need to try to throw in goofy charges for small pieces and I was able to use some of that difference to pay the tech directly for their work.
Quality video and the others that have ben uploaded on maintaining the car have been super helpful!
Hey man this helped a ton i am in the process of doing this myself! thanks for the super in detail video!
Thanks! if you get hung up on anything feel free to shoot me a DM over IG.
Used this video as reference many of times while doing my timing belt this year. Thank you for making it, hope all is well.

Hey man, Idk if you’ll see this but I’m a 14 year old that bought a 1994 Miata and it was overdue for this service. I watched your video tons of times over a couple of months and finally built up the courage to do it. It took me about a month and I would work until I got frustrated and then come back later. While I had the engine covers off I also painted them and they look great. Today I started it for the first time after the belt and pump replacement and it felt like one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It ticked for a minute and as the oil circulated it sounded better and better. I’m going to be using your other videos to help too, like the window bushing one so I can fix my noisy window. I just wanted to let you know that this tutorial helped me and many other people and I am thankful for it being there to guide me through the process and for you taking the time to help people like this.
Thank you man and congratulations! That rewarding feeling never wears off no matter how many jobs you take on.
Your videos consistently have the right balance between details and length. Excellent tutorial. Compared to doing this job on a MR2 AW11, V6 Camry, or a V6 Highlander (hardest yet), it looks like a dream job in the Miata. You are more thorough on replacing parts than most repair shops (I would have inspected / replaced the plugs and belts, but you did mention that). Miata looks like a great car to learn much of this type of repair work on; mechanically simple and easy access as a result of engine configuration.
i love the creativity and time you put into the introduction of your videos! alot of youtubers dont do that so thank you :)
and this video is very helpful !
Quality video, everything is well explained and I like the fact you didn't skip the putting everything together part! I've saved pretty much all these maintenance vids
Well, I just did this procedure on my 91 today. It went exactly as planned, thanks in a major way to your video. In fact, I watched your video a few times before doing a project for that I knew exactly what to expect throughout the job.
Thanks for doing what you do, so I can do what I did do!
GREAT job showing the cam timing! Other websites show the wrong marks. You got it correct! Exhaust cam "E" goes straight up, and the "I" on the exhaust cam lines up with the backing plate. Your vids are a permanent record on how to do it correctly. My future grandchildren will thank you!
Just some tips for anyone with VVT engines: To take off the valve cover, you need to remove the banjo bolt on the back left of the valve cover (big bolt connected to vvt line), then lift straight up. When removing vvt cam gear, the t25 screws are pretty tight, so be careful. For setting up the timing on the vvt gear, there is a dash mark that lines up with the mark on the cover behind it. You can’t do the 19 teeth check. Those are all the differences. Good luck!
I know this video is old but I am in the process of changing my timing belt on my NB and this is SO useful, thank you so much for this video! I was hyper focused and serious while watching but I have to say you got me at 14:03, best part of the video so far!
Honestly, one of the best step by step automotive tutorials I've ever seen.
Beautiful video, my friend! I've been waiting for someone to post a good tutorial on this before i attempted it on my own Miata. Great walkthrough, the clip cuts and timing were great. The video length was just fine. Hats off to you, sir!
the length of the video is exceptional . the tutorial is informative and concise making a fail proof step by step installation replication which highlights some possible problems one may encounter. i looked up this tutorial to change a timing belt.i am now going to change the water pump, thermostat, seals, and other miscellaneous parts . thank you Greg for helping miatas stay on the road by informing, empowering, and encouraging us to do the work our selves with your tutorials and sharing your knowledge leaving us with a sense of pride and more money to buy miata parts. I know you do not do this for money but would would like pay pall you $20 in gratitude for making my installation process a breeze , saving me and countless F bombs.
I'm glad you found it helpful! I'm always open to donations, they go directly back into the channel to help put out more videos! I have a PayPal donation link on my website at www.thecarpassionchannel.com/faq (it's the top one). Much appreciated and thanks for watching.
Excellent editing!
Most people don't edit the repetitive and unnecessary stuff out.
And excellent commentary of what you are doing and why.
Two thumbs up!
Really appreciate all the steps and info you have shared. Most other videos skip the little steps that us people who are learning do not know so thank you and keep these videos coming.
Seriously one of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen. Just bought a 92 Miata and all the pulleys and everything where off so this is going to help me a whole bunch putting back together
Brotha this the video i was waiting for for past month lol now i can start my maintenance as well. In video it looks sooooo much easier then the write ups on the forums!! Thanks for the time spent on this. Im following ur videos to the my own broke n boosted car 😄
I like the amount of detail that you put into your videos. Other CZcams people skip steps and you always go through every step giving pointers. Keep it up
I usually don’t like long videos, but it’s completely necessary for this project. I like that it’s tightly edited and that you included a couple of laughs. Two thumbs up!
You're a god send, bro! I remember being discouraged from changing my timing belt because there weren't any good guides online in 2012 when I first got my miata. Keep up the good work!
Just a tip: Installing cam seals by installing the cam caps after the seals are in place can cause a "pinch" that leads to a leak. This is uncommon but it does happen. As inconvenient as it seems, you're better off pressing those seals in the "conventional" way. Apart from that, this is a pretty damn good guide.
Only thing I would add to the timing belt replacement, is the point where you loosen, then tighten the tensioner pulley. The manual says to fully retract the tensioner, tighten the bolt. Rotate the crank 1 + 5/6 of a turn, where the crank notch lines up with a different mark on the block. Loosen the tensioner bolt to allow the tensioner to retract, then tighten the bolt.
These longer videos are definitely appreciated. The trouble with car repair is always in the details, and the more information we have, the better equipped we'll be to do the work ourselves.
This is the best Miata video out there. I'm getting ready to replace the valve cover gasket and thought I'd check in with this channel to make certain I had all the information I could get. Now, if I get that valve cover off and see the timing belt needs to be replaced, I'll only tinkle a little bit.
I don't know how many people realize you're not just doing the work, but you're working the camera, you've researched enough to give good advice, and edited the whole thing.
Great work!
Best timing belt tutorial I have seen for the mx5 miata on youtube. Very easy to follow. I think I'll do mine now.
Awsome vid. Love the in detail nature of it. I plan on following it step by step this winter to do the job on my Miata.
+Bunny Rabbit Garage make sure to video it! lol i have been subbed to you for a bit BTW get that content out ;) good luck
Think you so much for this video, because there are so many videos about miata timing belt change but they are going to fast and taking short cuts for time but your video is perfect you show each step, you show what to take off and in what step next, and for someone like myself who never change out a timing belt, it really help me and I loved it. Again think you for this video look forward to watching all your videos on miata work, I have a 1995 miata 1.8 and you have save me so much money doing it myself. levi
Easily one of the best car related tutorials on CZcams as a whole. There’s been good videos that were helpful but you didn’t leave me with a single question man, easily the best tutorial, regardless of topic
Thanks greeeggg. Finally finished it all up, got it running, left a hose loose and spit fluid everywhere but great vid!
Man this video was sooooooooooooo helpful changing the belts and stuff on my 1.8. Seriously man thank you so much for making this video.
Outstanding. Best I've seen on this repair. I'm about 30% along and now can actually understand the next steps. Well done. Now, back to the garage.
Thanks for the incredibly helpful educational videos and keeping them up on an accessible platform. I’ve watched this one probably dozens of times and today it helped me get all my belts changed easy peasy, so wanted to say thanks again Greg.
Holy shit! This helped SO much!! Thank you! I honestly don't know what I would have done without you
Great to hear!
Just did did my timing belt and water pump after my water pump started to leak like crazy. Also did tensioner and idler bearings, all accessory belts, radiator, all hoses, thermostat, rad cap, and while I had it apart I repainted every bracket cover pulley... ect to get rid of any rust and make it look showroom clean!
It was the first big job I ever did by myself and though it was a lot of work it was also a great learning experience, and I think I could do it again way easier! Had an issue with the new bearings being really noisy/whiny, I thought maybe I over tensioned timing belt so I went in 3 or 4 times to adjust it to no success, took it to a mechanic in town who is on his 9th Miata and he diagnosed it as the brand new parts I got being bad! :O and then when he ordered new ones they were bad too, finally got a 3rd set and they are much quieter, although still make a bit of noise but I think it's certainly acceptable now. Though it kinda sucked to accept defeat and have a mechanic look at it, it was also nice to have him look over my work and tell me it looked like I did a good job!
+Harrison Davis Excellent man, the second time you do a job it gets exponentially easier!
Hi Greg, I have always wanted a Miata, and this video convinced me to pick up an older one that might need some work. You broke a deep dive project into small, easy to follow steps. After purchasing one that had a significant oil leak back in October, I spent the past week tackling this job all the way down to the front main seal. I am happy to report that even though I forgot to properly torque the water pump pulley at first, the job was a success and I have no more oil leak! It's not just this video, many of your videos are a great service to the Miata community. I can't stress enough how much value you are adding to the world with what I assume is your hobby.
Thanks Bob! Glad you're having fun with the car. This is very much a hobby for me!
With the detail and sequencing shown, you have given me 100% confidence that I can do this job! Thanks for a really well done instructional video.
Great video! I’m in the middle of doing this job however I can’t t the crank bolt off. I’m in fifth gear, e brake is on tight, and wheels on the ground. Did anyone else run into this problem? I just can’t get the thing loose.
Update: bought the flying Miata tool to help take it off and it worked wonders. My car is up and running.
No crazy long breaker bar or impact gun?
I use a long breaker bar put it against the frame, stand clear and hit the starter. its sounds a little crazy but it works 99% of the time.
Melissa Self I tried that and it did not budge. Maybe my starter is too old
this video is incredible, was following it step by step today and got about half way with no issues! would not have made it nearly as far without your help. thank you so much!
ive been watching you for a few years now, and i cant believe you dont have more subs.
great, very detailed videos with little tricks peppered in there. keep up the great work!
Some general points,
This is an awesome time to CLEAN everything down there.
Also if you do a coolant reroute you can remove the thermostat housing and use a welsh plug (so much tidier)
Also with water pump seals and rocker cover seals use gasket glue,
use a torque wrench if you're new.
But remember CLEAN everything
i loved that video ...longer the better ... really good detail.. only downside was 360p :)
+David Sinclair McCabe By the time you read my reply, 1080p should be processed and ready for ya.
Yay :)
TheCarPassionChannel Yay :)
+David Sinclair McCabe lol yea
Excellent video. Clear video, no dead time in video, clear audio....helpful graphics. Excellent job.
Excellent video young man! We just bought our first Miata --'92 1.6 with 465,000 miles! Oil leak like a Texas gusher so I'm glad to see how easy it is to change seals.
I was really intimidated by having to do his project alone. thanks to this video, I feel much more confident. I'll let you know how it goes. thanks a ton...
el fernandez how’d it go?
@@seanrahmoeller6325 it sounds like it went great.. I'm not looking forward to this one.
I've watched at least a dozen Miata timing belt videos this week and yours is by far the best IMO. I'm halfway through the job on my car and really glad that I came across this before I got to the belt replacements and timing adjustment. I've got an 02 VVT though, any advice on the intake cam? Once the torx screws come off the cap of the silver thingy on top of the sprocket I'm hoping I'll find similar markings to do the timing. Thanks for your work on the vids, they're great!
+glenn phenicie Try to find the marks while the belt and cam gears are still on the motor and while it's at TDC. I'm not familiar with the VVT cam gears so I'm not exactly sure about the marks.
+TheCarPassionChannel Thanks bud, turns out the only mark on the VVT Intake Cam Gear (that I could find)is one little notch on a tooth that points to the 'E' on the backplate at TDC. So I locked it there before I pulled it off...will find out if I did everything correctly when I put it all back together!
+TheCarPassionChannel PS you asked if viewers liked the long format - as I said before, this is the most helpful video I've found and am really appreciative of you showing every step. Definitely a huge thumbs up and sub from me.
You have the most informative Miata videos on the Internet. I love seeing what you're doing with Broke and Boosted. Keep up the good work! You're really helping the new guys, like myself :)
+Sean Norris Thanks! I have a lot of fun making them. New video tomorrow!
I use this every time I do a timing belt. Thank you so much man, this is the best video online for a miata timing belt replacement.
1:12 turn the speed to 0.50 and he sounds like your drunk uncle giving you life advice
Awesome, i did all of this a few months back and this video is the first one to tackle everything you should do when already bothering with replacing the belt, seals, wp etc.
It is also interesting to see some different ways of tackling some problems one might run into, such as perfecting the timing, especially when working alone.
A few things i would have liked to have seen though was you putting some loctite on those rotating bolts! Furthermore all needed torque specs would have just rounded off the video completely. Also, my crank and cam gear bolts really did not come off as easily as depicted in your video, i either had to use a 3ft lever + a friend stomping the brakes or the "bump starter motor method" when i was alone.
One last thing.. i found it the easiest to drill through the middle of the crank/cam seals (metal Ring) with a 2-3mm drill bit, since mine were sat so tight, trying to pull them off using a seal puller just would have ended up scratching up my crank.
Sorry for accumulating so many things here, i still highly appreciate this and all of your other tutorials, and all the work it takes not only to do these things but to record an cut those videos together!
+Car Karl Thanks for all the input! I agree completely with everything stated. These videos are simply intended to be a guide, things can be done quite differently from person to person. I'm also by no means a professional and have never worked full time at any shop or anything like that, so I definitely miss things. 95% self taught, and have learned a lot from just reading tutorials and about other peoples' experiences.
Just bought my first Miata ('97 tan top over Montego Blue). I'm going to be spending a lot of time here. You do a good job simply stating each step and offering a lot of useful tips.
I have a limited edition mx5 mk1 and will be following this video to replace all that you have suggested . I am currently on lock down in the UK because of cv 19 and restoring the mx5 is helping through this tough time . Absolutely fantastic in depth and easy to follow instructions and very well put together . Keep up the great work . All the best from a novice mechanic that will now be able and willing to do perform this task
😊👍 Alan
the beginning has me dead lmao
I lost it at "Do I make you randy" 😂😂
As a new driver and car nerd in growth, videos like these are a huge help for figuring out cars. Thx a ton for the info! Starting the timing belt swap tomorrow!
Dude....you're awesome. Thanks for these videos bro, three years later still helping people.
Dude, always keep the videos detailed, they can be an hour long for all we care, what we need is the details of every step, otherwise why watch the video?
how much more detailed do you want the video to be? he tells you what do disconnect, and how to reconnect it, do you want explanation on what direction to turn every bolt? left is loose right is tight..
@@SneepDeg Yeah that's what I'm saying. We dont want him to change it up. We like all the details
@@gz617 oohhh my apologies, i am just really tired of people on the internet talking shit about people who are just trying to help others, and honestly his tutorials are the best :D
I really enjoy your videos and especially the camera work. Very easy to follow along. I just picked up a 1992 NA in really good shape with 150k miles for my wife to play with. Someone took good care of the car until the last owner who knows nothing about cars got his hands on it so I am replacing everything. I am pulling the trans using your clutch video and then new timing belt, hoses, etc after seeing this video. I am a car guy and have rebuilt over 70 cars - vettes, GTO's, & early Camaro's mainly so this Miata thing is a little new. Nice work again, great video's, and definitely not too long.
Just did this right after a clutch replacement. Thanks for your videos. Still took me several days, but it was nicer than staring at my Haynes Manual.
As it’s been said multiple times already, this is THE best video out there for this job. I didn’t have a clue as to where I needed to start but you’ve single-handedly saved my miata… only thing I would ask for is torque specs, other than that, perfection!
This is easily one of the most thorough tutorials I've ever seen on CZcams. Awesome stuff, thank you.
It's probably the best video out there! Very easy to follow, I always hate replacing the belt and water pump, but this video has me prepared to g o into the breach once again. Thank you!
Very well done How-to. Clear, concise and no extraneous commentary. Very appreciated.
Just finished my timing/water pump and this was extremely helpful. Small differences because I have a 1997 1.8 but it's pretty much all the same. Thank you.
I did not seen each miata Timing belt Video, but from all i seen. Your is by far the best. Gj and thank you very much.
Awesome video. This was incredibly helpful when I changed my timing belt on my 2001 Miata. Thank you for taking time to produce all the great content.
Thanks for this video! While I am not working on Miata, I have a BP out of an Escort GT in my 91' Ford Festiva, but the bulk of this video helped me understand what I need to do to change my waterpump, and while I am in there, my timing belts and tensioners.
I really enjoy your videos.
I'm a 50 yr old woman that enjoys getting my hands into my 1997 MX-5 and recently become a DIYer on my Miata "Betty Boop".
I am learning a lot, thanks to your videos, and i appreciate the details... longer videos are better for me too.
Thanks again!!
Thank you very much for posting. It helped greatly changing the timing belt on my daughters 97 Mazda 323 BA front wheel drive Australian model. Same engine turned East-West! Your descriptions were great and entertaining. Regards.
dude, i've found your channel just yesterday since then I don't sleep, eat or shit. man, I love this channel.
Excellent tutorial. I appreciate the detail snd logical approach. For someone trying this for the first time I think as much detail as possible is the way to go. Thank you for sharing your skills.
I have trawled through a load of these MX5 timing belt videos of the last couple of weeks and this one has to be the best, clear, concise, well lit and well shot. Top job thanks.
+TheTopGhia Thanks! I really do my best to clearly show and explain every step of the way in all of my tutorial videos.
+TheCarPassionChannel Well you nailed it. Im looking forward to working my way through your other videos now i have found our channel.
Well done. Easy to follow and understand. Good clear voice and no background noise. First class video.
That was a great tutorial; very meticulous and thorough. I will not wrench my own vehicle but it is great to understand all of the steps and tips. I rather pay a pro to do it and understand what he is doing and being able to discuss some of the details with knowledge. I used to wrench my own cars long ago in high school, and it is refreshing and nostalgic to see the relative simplicity of the miata engines after driving so many modern vehicles with so much junk on it that we dumbed down to only filling gas and checking oil and water. Thank you so much! I am enjoying all of your videos.
Just did mine today and completed the job in four hours thanks to this video. Followed it step by step
I literally can not thank you enough. You've really inspired me to work on my Miata because originally I was to scared to but I can say I can now work on the car with confidence and help my little blue Miata (Bobert) work properly. :)
That's so awesome to hear man. It's one of the biggest reason I make these videos. Once you take on that one intimidating job it can open up a whole new world of possibilities.
This video is so helpful! This is my first time doing my timing belt and Crank/Cam seals on my NB1 being that I'm 16. This video made the process so slick and simple.
Well explained and detailed enough for me to get a good idea how to do mine. It will be the first timing belt change for me. Thank you greatly for doing the video. All the best.
Thanks for a making this great video. It really helped me a lot. It was not too long. I liked the in depth approach that you took and your camera work really showed exactly what you were doing. Good job.
Great video. I've watched several others and this was clear and to the point. Very well done. Keep them coming!
Thank you so much! ..... Awesome tutorial ... I just did my 93 Miata without any problems whatsoever! ... The Crescent
Wrench/Vise Grips Tip was Genius!
This is hands down the most thorough walk through I have ever seen
This tutorial is excellent. I am in the process of changing the timing belt on an old Miata we've had and am finding this very helpful.
Just wanted to say this video has been the best resource for beginner learning to replace a timing belt. Watched it and replaced it with success!
Great video! Plan on tackling my water pump/timing belt this weekend, wish I did it last weekend when I replaced my radiator... Thanks for all the help that this series has provided!
Quick, clear, direct, and informative. best on youtube. Thanks saved me time
I changed my water pump and timing belt a few weeks ago and could of done with this video at the time! I rarely leave comments but I really have to commend you on this video and really look forward to more like it (detailed videos). Mods and routine maintenance tutorial vids would be much appreciated!
This was a really thorough tutorial for this, one of the best on youtube by far.
This was fantastic! Thank you so much. Love that you included the obvious details for us beginners. Great Job!
