- After 5 years and 1/3 million views, I decided to give one of my most popular videos a 2020 makeover. Now with even more parts! If you're just starting to get familiar with changing parts on your Miata, I'm here to tell you that you're capable of FAR more than you think you are. It is intimidating at first, but if you just start slow and have some friends help, you'll go from replacing plugs to bolting on a turbo in no time. Cheers and thanks for watching!

Why am I watching this I've done it 3 times already
samesies, yet i still watched the whole thing, i dunno why
Done it loads of times, but it's strangely calming watching Greg do it
Just did my first one, and I don't own a NB, yet here I am!
Same
🤣✌️
Those first 30 seconds had me dying.
I bought my NA about 8 months ago. I had no idea on how to work on cars. Not even an oil change.
There was an oil leak by the CAS. Followed one of your videos and changed the o-ring. Unfortunately my dumbass had a harder time putting it back in and messed up timing. So now I had to set timing. Not a big deal, ordered a timing light from Amazon and again watched one of your videos on how to do it and decided to do it in an evening. Got my timing light, jumped the car into diagnostic mode, got everything set up, all good right? NO! There were no reference points/marks to align the timing marks.
I thought, well there's no possible way that they just disappear right? Wellll, the previous owner replaced timing belt, water pump and all that good stuff and for some reason he thought that not putting back the lower timing covers is a good idea. It was sitting in a bag that I got with the car. So, my car is out of timing. No way to time it. Didn't have money to take it to a mechanic, no friends, and no garage. Not even tools.
Decided to tackle this somehow by myself. I've already watched your "party miatas" videos countless times even before I bought the car. Watched it several times more, went and bought a 50 piece tool box from Harbor Freight and took stuff apart piece by piece in the apartment driveway. I may have looked like a total clown, but damn it felt good after I put my timing covers back, set proper timing after working on it for 2 days. The only help I had was your videos.
Since then, I've been fixing my own cars, parents and didn't have to pay for a mechanic since then. I have tools, I have youtube. That introduction and the instructions I had just motivated me even more. Since then, I've done countless jobs that would have costed several hundred dollars.
Thank you so much Greg. You don't even know the amount of respect I have for you putting out videos like this.

Miata Dad: The man, the myth, the LEGEND
Mechanic here, use scotch brite pads on your sealing surfaces for a perfect seal everytime
At 20:00, it's important to mention that there is another mark to the left of the TDC mark that is the tension mark. 1 5/6 turns is stopping at EXACTLY that mark after ONE full rotation. Tighten the tensioner bolt to lock the tension, then do 2 1/6 turns (ending at TDC) and everything should line up back up again provided the timing was set properly.
Also make sure your car is in neutral while doing this lol
Dude I literally scream "YES!" when I see a new TCPC vid!
I scared my Gf saying that too..

I already done my timing belt water pump and hoses over a year ago, I’ve seen soo many videos of people doing it, but this is by far one of the best! Soo fun watching your Videos man!
This has got to be one of the best Miata tutorials on youtube.
"there's 6 places you use RTV... blah bla blah ...cam caps"
*thinks back...*
Holy shit, thanks Miata dad!!! I've had a very slight on and off oil weep for 2 years, I always assumed one of my brand new front cam seals was bad and I was a little bummed about it. I never used any RTV up there. You da real MVP.
Just did my timing belt, water pump, hoses, and seals following this video as my guide on my 97 NA8. Runs and sounds great. Couldn't have done it without this video. Thanks so much!
Pics with your phone, aaahhhh, the future. So damned cool. A lifesaver. Lube your seals and orings before assy.
Nice job, the 1 5/6 rotation for tensioning has a mark on the oil pump at about 11 o-clock.
hands up who's watching w/o actually having the car, because this is such a great video??
I appreciate you 🙌
Considering how popular Miatas are now, you should definitely have more subscribers than you do. With how well organized your videos are, you deserve at least 1M.
Also, i JUST ordered stuff to redo my cam seals.
It'll be the first ever time I do anything engine maintenance (outside oil changes lol)
This video is a god send
I got to 31:33 before I remembered I don't own a Miata.
There’s an easy way to fix that!

@@Kjmods I have seen NB with rust for $2000 or Mint condition for $10,000 . I ended up buying 2003 with low mileage ,never driven in the winter (no rust) a few small dents ,in way better condition then Greg's and came with OEM hard top that I don't use . Ended up paying $6000 ,just plugs ,coils ,CPS Replaced ,this winter will change gear an dif. oil . Maybe shifter bushing kit too.
@@alexisknows6513 sounds like you got a good deal! I owned a 99 for a while which is when I found this channel
bought onne 2 months ago for 2k its a 93 only had to change brakes ands radiator ..it may nott be the bbest investment for everyone but its damn sure a fun one
NB let’s go! 🥰
Finally some love for NBs ^^ Feels like every NA guy out there needs to yell pop-up related obscenities :D
Just use an impact on the crank bolt. It is so much easier and you are less likely to damage something in the transmission.
Can you fit an impact down there?
@@CarsMeetsBikes if you drop the sway bar and remove the radiator, yes. The sway bar is held in place by 4 bolts on the underside of the car.

Loved the content brotha! Learned a lot!
Thank you for the NB Style timing belt tutorial, waited a while for this 🤗
Great video Craig
This is such a good vid! Well done Miata Dad, you have crushed it once more!
Thank you Greg! Making at home work easy!!
So much time effective how-to without missing important details! Well done, Greg :)
That was an excellent video!!!
Dude love the videos, you posted this vid dead ass 30min after I watched that old vid to do my timing belt
Hey bro, just watched it all the way from beginning to end. Took notes like it was lecture. Absolutely amazing video, immaculate detail. 10/10. Have a great day!
excellent tutorial, thanks!
Version one of this video helped me do MANY things, and not just to miatas. Thanks!
Thank you for this video
Mr. Petersen is a Miata Legend. I watched his and Eric's South Main Auto videos when I did my clutch. .. A few times. I wouldn't have done it without them. First clutch job and it went well. They most involved maintenance job I did before that was a brake job. They raise the value of the Miatas a lot.... Have one but want another one or two ... or more... Now I need more money.
Really great informative video Greg I’ll be watching and watching this many times so I get it right on my (MX5) Miata. 👍🏽😎
Also thanks for your previous timing belt video. Used it to change my NA belt last year. Very helpful.
Thanks Greg for this video! I've reached out to Treasure Coast Miata and ordered my kit. New to the channel, Instant fan Greg! You have some of the best Miata content on the Internet. Good work!
The best video on this subject that I have found, and I have have watched so many. Thank you and keep up the great work. Thanks for the lead to TCM, they have some great parts and decent prices.
Thank you! This video is a treasure for a new Miata owner!
Very helpful. Have this planned for over this winter.
You’re a legend. Best how to out there.
This guy is killing it! Glad I learned about this channel.
Well actually I would like the vid twice if I could! You helped me loads with the previous timing vid too and I was able to pull it off but with this guide you helped me to do get some stuff I couldn’t last time like that tiny O ring under the manifold. Great help thanks again!
My Miata was hit a year and a half ago along with all the rwd fun to be had (an accord was her replacement). I began watching this channel back then with goals of following suit. Watching this channel today brings back so many memories and almost makes it seem like she is still with me today. Thank ya
Ive done it on an NA and about to do it on an NB I got half a year ago. Great timing! ;)
I had to come back to this and rewatch...I'm tackling my own nb2 in the next couple of weeks. Needs to warm up a bit. Many thanks for the awesome vids. Love the new content.
Dude I just ended up here and your channel is really cool
Thank you for your time And commitment tó do this videó
Big Miata Daddy!!
Just made it across the whole process on my 02 VVT with the help of your great tutorials!
Thank you so much for the effort of doing these great videos, kudos to you!!
I’m sure you had the time of your life doing all this because I’ve recently did similar maintenance as you did... great video you went above and beyond with this useful content.
Love the hose persuader! It reminds me of my exhaust hanger persuader. A tool I use only once in a blue moon but it saves a world of pain.
Excellent video instruction. New NA Miata owner so this video will come in handy for sure! Thank you!
Thanks for all the tips!
Just got an NA6 miata with the GF. You're gonna get at least a dozen views from me trying to rebuild it! A good ol' sunburst yellow with 170k miles. Thanks in advance for the help Papa Miata!
Dont forget to run your heater to get out any air bubbles!
As far as I know this is not needed on the Miata because unlike some cars it does not have any valve that shuts off the flow of water to the heater core, it's always flowing. I know on my Z32 it did have that valve though, so every car is different.
@@TheCarPassionChannel ahh. That makes sense!
such a useful video!
Going to jump in and do all this tomorrow ! Thanks Bro
Just finished replacing my timing belt, water pump, thermostat, etc etc following this video and everything went perfectly thanks to this video. Thanks a lot for the top quality content
I just watched this so I could take notes before diving in this weekend. I have over 130 bullet points, not including the shifter rebuild or the fuel filter because I've already done those. Thanks a bunch for this, I feel pretty confident to get it done.
Love your videos, please keep making Miata vids!!!
Bout to pick up my second Miata, 95 m edition, and this video was incredibly satisfying to watch. Had to finish the full video lol
I watched this and your old video to do a timing belt job on my supercharged NB, thanks a ton. My miata would not be the same without you.
Just finished this job. I probably gave you like 20 views over the weekend hahaha.
Thanks for the help.
Awesome video.
Great video
Just got a blue na and boy did this video come in handy. Thanks
Énorme !!!! remise en état du moteur j’adore ! Bravo ça me plaît merci pour les détails et infos !! Bonjour du sud de la france ;)
Man the first time I did all of this it was hell and it sucked, but very rewarding at the same time. Thanks again as always Greg, you da man
ayeee Preg Geters is back!
Dude you are seriously a GODSEND to Meeyotta owners. I swear. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
A god amongst Miata owners ladies and gentlemen👏👏
Wanted to thank you for this awesome video, my nb died and wouldnt start, waching this video made me realise the timing was out. Using this video I have now fixed it and have a running car again. Cheers
Thank you, dude!!!!
The best after black Friday video ever! Love the quality btw.
Also I bought a miata na6 91 a month ago. It runs like shit but i got it for 650 on Craig in Santee. Its black and wasn't running. Got it running changing the tps and replacing the afm. I really need to work on it but work has me 6/7 days slaving. Love your content, will put it to use soon.
It's poetic, Craig. I've used your videos to work on my NA countless times, and I watched this one while replacing the clock spring on my new to me MSM. And forgot to put the nut that holds the steering wheel back on. Twice. And be proud, I've spent an intake and downpipe worth of money on maintenance bits before going for power. I'm proud of me.
All those back plates are so important. I put the whole motor back together and didn’t realize I had forgotten those until I went to check my timing 😅
Treated this video like my bible for this job and everything went very smoothly. I have an NB2 so some minor things were different but thank you
Flyin miata for the win on the crank pulley. I'm excited to use the rest of the kit to put it all back together
I’ve been absolutely transfixed by your maintenance videos. The lack of music (or very subtle music) is a big bonus. Don’t even have a Miata yet, but once the snow starts melting up here in Canada I will be getting one. Coming off working on my Audi A5 these things look very DIY-friendly. Can’t wait to mod and enjoy 90s simplicity again
This is PERFECT timing!!! I just bought my kit from Treasure Coast
Its perfect timing for everyone, summer is sneaking up on us. Time do the yearly maintenence
LOL That intro was A1 🤣
Awesome video!! I’ll just come over to your place with all my parts! 😂
Watch and rewatch.
6:20 saved my life, thank you!
a maintenance video on the same day as flyin miatas maintenance monday sale. perfect
Hi Greg a big thank you for a completely top drawer video I’ve just completed all of this on my mk1 and I can safely say I couldn’t have done this with just the manual (pictures - 1000 words!). You should get a lot of satisfaction from knowing you’re helping non mechanics do this stuff! Sooo…. could you do a video on wiring in 2 fans with set up for the ME221……..
nice one Craig Beters!
:DDDD
Loved the intro!! 😆
That MCM Chopped t-shirt tho... Excellent video brotha, well done.
This winter I have my 99 up on stands for a suspension refresh (superpro bushings, koni str.t's, por 15 paint on the control arms, new sway bar end links). And I also have to weld in repair panels into the rusted front frame rails and have to remove the radiator to do this. So of course now is the best time to upgrade the factory radiator and hoses. So of course this also seems like the best time to replace the timing belt along with all the other parts you replaced on your car. I was unsure about tackling this on my own but watching you I think has given me the confidence to do the job. Thank you for such comprehensive guide. Cheers
Whenever I have to take the crank bolt off I use a breaker bar against the frame or ground with 0 slack and touch the starter. Used that method for several cars. Its like a built in impact driver.
Thanks Greg , I will do shifter bushing kit over the winter ....no more grinding 3rd gear at TMP .....:-)
I did my timing belt. And it work perfect thanks greg peters. greets from Rotterdam holland
That was a Great Video
