My parents divorced back in 84(Bad experience for a 10 yr old) and I had to get used to going to see dad rather than just walkin down the hallway to where he'd been my whole life.Went to the world of wheels in downtown Atlanta back in 85 with Pop. Dad pointed out the Black 40 Ford coupe like he'd had. I thought it looked so cool and got inspired to build one if there was one made. A day or two later we hit the hobby shop and Dad spotted the very kit your reviewing. Really took me back to building that kit with dad at his kitchen table. It was time well spent and a memory I'll cherish forever as I lost Dad back in 2015. I have 2 of those same kits and they're close to my heart too. Thanks Luka, been havin a rough go lately and this hit the spot for some love buddy.
Thanks Luka, great review of a very popular model kit. I like the AMT 40 ford kit because it lends itself so well to being modeled in so many ways. Stock, street rod, resto mod, gasser, and my favorite is to cut and saw the heck out of it and turn it into a Saturday night special from the local stock car track from the 50's and 60's. At this point in time my favorite kit is the Revell 29 roadster but that could change next week.
Your work is mastercraft. Sapphire blue is gorgeous!

Dear Luka, a friend of mine worked with an older lady who bought one car in her lifetime: a 1940 Ford Coupe-ay as she lovingly called it. She worked with this young man for many years, showing him the ins and outs of running her nursery. She taught him how to propogate ground cover, showed him design principles and when she retired, she passed along the business to my friend. She would stop by the nursery on occasion to see how he was doing maintaining "the farm" as she called it. My buddy always loved that '40 Ford and she told him when she "crossed The Great Divide", the "coupe-ay" would be his. That sad day eventually caught up with her and, true to her word, the old coupe-ay came to my friend. He did a little touch-up here and there and that beautiful Ford was eventually restored to the same showroom condition as it was the day Miss Thelma- yep- "Miss", drove her off the lot. He never modified that beautiful ride and replaced the old worn-out parts with new ones as he was able to find and afford them. One of the first replacements- actually restorations- were the old wheel covers. He had them re-chromed and the red, I believe it was, Ford name touched up. He has had many offers for "Thelma" (named after his old friend) but never parted with her; I suspect he never will. I think the old '40 Ford is as fine a legacy as a person could hope to leave, other than the integrity with which Miss Thelma conducted heself throughout her life. Knowing the love you have for this beautiful example of American automotive design, I knew I had to pas the story on to you.

I had the Barris cruising USA version of this kit. Mine was molded in black with prismatic stickers and the dry rub on decals. It was an easy and very satisfying kit to build. So many cool ways to build it.
My first real glue together kit I built was bought by my dad after we rebuilt an engine on his chevy pickup. He got me the AMT 1953 Ford pickup kit. It was the hi stepper version. It went together nicely and I built mine stock. Black with red interior and white rims with poverty caps. I got a reissue of that kit I plan to do full custom.
Both are fun an easy kits a kid could have a BLAST building!
I can SO relate... when I was 7,. for my birthday, back in '63, my sister took me to our local hobby store as I wanted to try to get a model of my Dad's 61 Plymouth ...This was to be my first model car!.....they didn't have that one, but they had a 63 Fury by Jo-Han in stock. So I got that one, took it home, and painted it Pactra royal blue with a brush. She helped me to put it together! So go forward 30 years, I was fortunate enough to locate "real" a 63 Fury ..a nasty piece it was...however the deal maker was that this one came with a max wedge engine in pieces. ......so, you got it, I restored the car and reproduced the model just the same way my late sister and I built it...
So thanks, sis....for inspiring this build. Now I can drive my first model car!!

This was my first model and this car has become my favorite as well. It is amazing how one kit has reached and has been such a favorite for so long. Lindbergh has a decent 40 ford kit too.
That also is my favorite model kit. I built it back in the 60's when it was new. I have several of the reissues also. Great review by the way.

My favorite kit would have to be the Matt and Debbie Hayes pro Street Thunderbird!! I loved building that model as a kid, and just recently found it and inspired me to get back into it. I will definitely buy one unsealed lol maybe build it the way it should be built instead of me building it the way I wanted to as a drag car. Hey Luka, a little late to the video but my favorite kit of all time...1976 Mustang II Cobra II. From MPC. I know, one of the worst Mustangs but I loved it. I bought it when it came out and have since bought two more and several non-Cobra IIs. Saw it on Charlie's Angels and wanted it so bad. Second, 1977 Bandit Trans Am. Multiple kits of these. Enjoy the channel. Love seeing the vintage kits.
This is the first model kit I ever got- Christmas 1963- I was 8 years old. DAD helped me build it- I prefer this one to Revell's version- and Lindbergh's. I have at least 3 in my stash, plus a couple panel vans and the one I like best, the ' turtle back" Tudor sedan- got 3 of those as well. The 394 CI Olds engine with fuel injection is the drag engine option in that kit, the Nail head Buick with blower is the drag option in your kit as you noted. My original '40. FORD kit from Xmas '63 was molded in black plastic.
I had a light blue 40 Deluxe coupe, with a '49 Merc flathead. Neat car. Looked just like the one on the box. I sold it, and a year later bought a 39 coupe, which I still have. Cool kit.
I built mine in 1985 also.
First time using Mr. Color paints, my father's Speedy air compressor and my new Binks Wren airbrush.
I mixed 50/50 royal blue and navy blue.
(My father was a BIG Ford man, said they called that color "Dearborn Blue"
Total stock, except under the hood, with fat whitewalls and stock caps and pretty rings.
Put a "tri carburetored" '49 Mercury flathead in it.
Thanks Luca, I really enjoyed this review and I always enjoy hearing about the memories and what kits mean the most to that person. Back in the late seventies, early eighties the box art on a few kits that I had seen was one of the things that helped shape my love for hot rods, muscle car's and just about anything car's. I've built this kit many ways but one of my favorite way was an early 50's modified stock car. Lots of cutting but they look real good. I just wish they would add one more slick !

My dad had a 40 ford 5 window coupe as a drag racer in the early 60's ran B/Gas. It had a Pontiac engine, won over 30 times with it. Memories.
Luka ,the 1939 1940 AMT Ford sedan was. one of my 1st builds, along with the 60 Valiant and 60 Impala,this remains one of my all time favorites in all versions! Thank You for sharing! God Bless and keep up the good vids

I built a couple of that same box art version in the 80s as well. On mine though I didn’t use the fenders or running boards and made them into NASCAR modifieds.
My favorite kit(s) of all time were always the first early 80s Monogram NASCAR kits. I have a few of them that were very special to me that are still sealed and I keep displayed. Lots of great memories of those. And I have tons of them to use with aftermarket decals, as well.

I built this kit over 20 years ago in the mid 90's,painted it 2 tone with black front & light blue body,used the ford moon hubs & chrome trims on the steel wheels,still stands out in my model cabinet along with my other 1/24 & 1/25 cars after all this time,great kit,goes together easy as

Who doesn't love the AMT Trophy series kits. I think this came out around 61. The ease of parts swapping among the Trophys was neat. My favorite has to be the 57 Fairlane.
I like those slicks!! My favorite kit is the A.M.T 49 Ford custom really loved building it was really fun.
2 Luka's I've been building 4 40 + Yrs. & I still don't know ALL THE LIL Trick's but have just A few of my own !! Like watching all Diff. Build's from all Diff. builder's !! Gives me Ideas 4 future & present build's !! Thank's Bro. !!!

I just got this kit in the mail off of eBay, same box art, same blue plastic. I love old school hot rods, and have the Monogram 40 Ford Standard coupe kit. I'm thinking of mixing the two kits to come up with a nice Forty Ford street rod.
Nice to hear what this kit means to you. I believe the original issue was back in 1961 and it's surprisingly not changed much over the years.
The Olds engine was in the '40 Tudor sedan kit so that's where amt's confusion came from.
Cool kit! Right now I'm doing the '69 Charger 1/16 scale. I had forgotten that I built the Street Machine in the early 80's until I saw the kit on a CZcams video. I'm working on the 'Duke's' version but making a pro-touring type car out of it. Lotsa modifying going on!

If you have a Michaels craft store around,,,you can get the sapphire blue you are looking for,,,it’s even better,,,it’s Krylon craft series shimmer metallic blue. Wish I could post a pic on here for ya,,sprayed a 69 nova SS and 32 ford high boy,,,absolutely beautiful ,,deep sparkly blue.
Not much of a model builder even back in the day , I seemed to specialize in more glue in the wrong places....but what few models I did make I enjoyed , currently get back into building but more toward a RC conversion of Italeria’s S100 Schnellboot, but in doing that and finding a new local hobby shop, I found the AMT 1941 Plymouth Coupe,,,, Reminded me of my dad’s blue coupe he had when I was a kid he had over size tires on it and would take that every where, out in the field or the dirt back roads .... Yes I got the kit when I saw it and will build her stock and try to paint her as I remember the faded paint chipped surface rust blue with the dusty gray brown seats .....funny what one remembers as a kid , that and the black and white 1959 Pontiac station wagon and the evening we all got ready to go see my grandma only not be able to go because the car would not start .....later I found out it had thrown a piston ... but back then I only understood we would not be going and a little boy was very up set and unhappy .....wonder if a 1959 wagon was ever modeled or if it is a scratch build project guess I should google it ...
LOL, yeah. no matter how careful I was I always got glue on the clear parts. smh

A kit i absolutely love because it is close to my heart is the AMT 1969 Corvair. Even though it has some basic issues, i still like it because I grew up with the 1:1 cars and working on them with my dad. So a heavy amount of nostalgia there.
I like that kit. I always liked that Corvair. Im old enough to remember them as a late model and very common cars on the roads. The late 60s one always got my attention as a kid. I got a diecast toy of one and it was one of my favorates.

That's a good kit. I've got the sedan delivery in the stash and I'm thinking of using it with the revell midget racer and trailer. My dearest kit is actually two... The revell pro stock Corvette and the revell pro builder Daytona which I have two of
AMT Old Pro Nova. Kit full of issues and very dated now. But in the early 80s Novas were not popular like now. And I loved Novas. Built a few AMT Novas before buying a real one as my first car. Owned several 1:1 Hot rod and race Novas. And it all started from my love of that Old Pro

Just bought two kits. One will be stock and the other will be a street machine.
It is a Revell kit.
I have that kit also that is the match to this box art/era. I love that too. Green on the box.

I built the '39/'40 sedan version of this back in the '70s. My favorite kit, I think, was the Revell '57 Nomad, which I built in the early '80s. Before that I built the Monogram (I think) version in the early '70s, when I was still using about half a tube of glue to build a model.
While it's not the same kit, I picked up a Monogram 40 Ford kit a couple weeks ago off of eBay. It doesn't seem to have the build options as the AMT kit, I had to dig it out while watching to compare it to your's. I might have to see if I can find the AMT version. so I can do a custom build. Mine has a flat head but only the stock version. I have an AMT 32 Ford Phaeton that has a flat head with performance parts. Might have to do some swapping!

Well, I never have just one favorite kit that I like. Just to name a few '65 GTO, '65 El Camino, '57 Chevy, '58 Chevy, '57 Ford, & the '63 Bette Split Window! But one model that stood out is the '69 Chevelle SS396! That model was so hard to get ahold of until I'd went to a place that has a big stash, & even though it cost me more then the average hobby shop I thought it was worth it. Now Round2 did redo the rag top, but that hardtop was what I had to get! I may get another one as well! '40 Fords, I love them just as well, & they make good hot rods without a doubt!
i got that as xmas gift prob 94 , it sat on the shelf untouched for a few yrs, then my 13 yr old brother and i built it together . now its been almost 20 yr since hes been building! that ss396 is a family heirloom to us . he has the model now, still has the box+ the build instructions
I had a 1940 Ford Coupe, too. I received as part of a package deal; the main model was a Dodge L700 with a flatbed trailer. It was the pride of my then collection; I was sadly informed by the buyer that his nephews laid waste to it in all of 10 minutes.

Nice review. However I do have a few corrections for you. First off, you mixed your engine blocks up. The first one was the flathead. Secondly, those are not mono leaf springs. The early Camaros had mono leaf springs, meaning one leaf on each side. Fords up through 1948 had Transverse leaf springs.
Neat 40 Ford. Since I have only started building a few months ago I do not really have a special kit at this time but I was wondering if this would be the same type of build featured in a Lindberg; L700 dodge truck kit that I have been looking at lately. Currently building a 65 Chevelle SS 396 Z16 code 1/25 that picked up at a swap meet.
that lindberg is pretty similar and with some care it will build up pretty nice . welcome to the hobby . model car builders are some of the best people around.

Yes Luka This is A True Dear old Kit. I did it under Street Rods Issue Circa 1973 issue amongst like my First 10 amongstrl kits as the 2 dr coupe Version. I also built like 3 of the Sedan Deliveries from age 13-17 yrs old as well

The Oldsmobile engine was in the 1939 Ford Sedan and the Buick Nailhead was in the 1940, but they are interchangeable. the Pontiac engine is in the AMT 1936 Ford and is also interchangeable to the 1940 as well.

PZL-37 Łoś 1:72, old communist era kit. Build about 10 of them, all bad. But still - one of my first. Even if first time was terrible - u will remember it whole life.
