  • Living in this strange Japan is SO much different than New York City where I’ve been living since 2006. This house is a total trip. Its got more space than the average Japanese Home here in Kyoto Japan, but there are some things about it that may drive you crazy if you are coming from the West. Check out this tour of a house in Kyoto Japan and let me know what you think!

I like the way you've taken elements of your NYC videos and brought them into this one - drink machine, bike, room features/dimensions etc. Re: dryers, a lot of ppl here in Australia have a backyard clothesline, and use that instead of a dryer. I don't have a backyard but use indoor drying racks. It's a lot cheaper than a dryer!

Yet another great video, so interesting. Looks like the family is settling in and relaxing , away from constant honking of horns and sirens blasting. Sometimes when you get out of the city you can't sleep, it's too quiet. You get used to street noises, sort of like ''street lullabies". I look forward to these videos. That stove/oven looks a bit complicated, and see, there is life after sink sprayers.

The unique birdbath statues for your garden were actual Buddhist tombstones lol…
Also, the LIXIL banner was for a showroom of their stuff. LIXIL is a huge home design and modular unit supplier. They make many of the unit baths in Japan like the one you described in your wife’s family home. Most Japanese homes have so many prefab units throughout the homes as the life expectancy of most homes is like 30 years at best.
Finally, only the yellow plate cars have the motorcycle engines; 0.6 litre and you get many kickbacks like cheaper toll road fees. They still will get to 160 kph on the highway (double most speed limits), as they are pretty stripped down for insulation which saves tonnes of weight.

The thing is, in other countries, people actually live in their home for 30+ years. They see their home has their own space and center of life. In the US many just move from one meaningless apartment or house to another every 3 years. All they do during their stay is to decorate to impress friends and neighbors. This house looks like the people living there actually made it their own over the course of timel.
That being said, I personally would also not clutter every inch like they did, but I can totally relate to their intentions.

Thank you for the house tour! From what I know of Japan's housing, that house you're staying in is HUGE! The bedrooms are so big as are the windows. Was it a newer development or how did the family end up with so much space? Really interesting - you look relaxed! How's Violet doing with the changes?

Homes out in the more rural parts are usually a lot bigger than homes in the city. And much cheaper too.

It's in a rural area, so the size looks standard. Most of the tiny house/apartment videos are in Tokyo, because of pricing. The same budget would give you more space in Osaka, and probably double in Nagoya & Sendai.

Everyone talking about the clutter, but my great grams home had a lot of stuff everywhere (not as much as this home, but very much lived in).

Yes your wife's old wrestling figures are worth quite a lot now! She had a lot of legendary wrestlers like The Great Muta, Masahiro Chono, Antonio Inoki, Riki Choshu, and Sting among other all-time greats in their original packaging.
