  • Born to Run, Springsteen's greatest song,, has a very interesting back story to it. Bruce's back was against the wall to produce a hit, and he spent agonizing months to make the song just right. He wanted to make the greatest record anyone had ever heard. He wound up creating is one of the greatest "wall of sound" records in history. In this video I tell the backstory of how, what and why the song was created. For more videos just like this, visit / @tunesman100

I was a Springsteen fanatic by 1973 in Maryland and in 1975 our local radio station WHFS announced that Springsteen was soon releasing a new album. Working one night at the ice cream parlor, with music pumped into the back where me made homemade whipped cream, the most beautiful sounds I had ever heard came across the speakers. It was Born to Run. The song is still for me the greatest song ever.

I still remember hearing the song for the first time in 1975, at a friend's place, after school. I was blown away by the force of the song and the lyrics. The desperation in his voice, begging Wendy to run away with him. For me, this is still his best song, leaving everything else he created lightyears behind. An amazing peace of Americana that stands out with all of its surprising twists and turns.

When I was attending the main campus of Penn State University in 1975, I went to two Bruce Springsteen shows; one before "Born To Run" and one after. Springsteen had been fairly popular in the Philadelphia area (where I was from) and most of the kids attending that first show were from around there. The few students from the other Pittsburgh side of the state who paid tickets HAD NEVER HEARD of the dude! There were some empty seats! (Springsteen, by the way, put on an incredible show; when the band took a break, he stayed on and played solo piano!)
After "Born To Run" came out, the auditorium was packed, standing room only, yadda-yadda. Springsteen and his band still put on a great act... yet for me, it didn't have the intimacy of the previous time I saw him.

Amazing story behind this iconic song, especially the effort and time it took to release it. Well done Jim.

The glockenspeil is actually an electric keyboard with metal pipes. You can see it on top of Federici's organ in a lot of the stuff from that time.
