- Nicholas Irving, author and former soldier, rates 8 sniper scenes for realism in movies. Known as "The Reaper," Irving says he killed 33 enemies as a sniper for the US 3rd Ranger Battalion. He is the co-author of "Reaper: Drone Strike: A Sniper Novel."
Irving rates the realism of classic war movies such as "Clear and Present Danger" (1994), and "Enemy at the Gates" (2001). He breaks down long-range-sniping scenes featuring Will Smith in "Gemini Man" (2019) and Mark Wahlberg in "Shooter" (2007).
He also looks at modern-day war movies set in Iraq and Afghanistan, such as "American Sniper" (2014), "Lone Survivor" (2013), and "The Hurt Locker" (2009). Irving rates the realism of the weapons used, along with body position, stealth, and environment.

Special Ops Sniper Rates 8 Sniper Scenes In Movies | How Real Is It? | Insider - Zábava
I'm beginning to realise that being a sniper is like 95% mathematics and 5% shooting
Also felt like they should rename it to "mathematician rates sniper scenes" or something :)
I like those odds
And a ton of training of course.
A lot of people don't realize how smart a lot of special forces guys are and how smart a lot of the infantry grunts are, too. Don't let the movies,TV and video games fool you, combat really is a thinking man's game.
Kinematics and projectile motion
Bruh when he did the quick math, I was like, “I’m a failure.”
lol, same
Lmao bro you’re not because you can joke about that, to many people think they can seriously do this type of shit just because of games and ego and can’t even admit this I know your joking but words have power you’re not a failure brother 🤛🏾
He used his D.O.P.E.
@@AlexSmith-tz2lf No need to do the D.O.P.E. on that one lol, you use it cus it's quicker but essentially it can be done the hard way with mental math as well. He gives you an estimated height of the object (Obj), he gives you an actual height of the image (Img), he knows the distance his eye is from his scope (b). He wants to know the distance from his scope to the target (v). Magnification N = Img/Obj = b/v -> v = b*Obj/Img, neglects inaccuracies of the scope but for theory, job done. It's very simple math to do on the fly.
Now what he did there was take an experimentally established scope constant (B) including both b and all the inaccuracies of this specific rifle and scope he's working with, the offset from the scope to his barrel, thick lens corrections, probably some factors you wouldn't even think of but don't matter now since it's experimental data that includes all of that. Then he says okay now v=B*Obj/Img because that's what it's going to hit like in reality. He might have very well written down that constant in his D.O.P.E. that sounds like a smart thing to do in case your memory goes hazy, but he still did the same maths regardless in this instance.
I'm sure if you start practicing, you can be just as good. It's not calculus or anything

This guy is actually so cool. The way he explains the methods and the tools used makes it easy to understand. Also the way he did that math so fast was beyond impressive.
I know!! I was so impressed with the math too!!
I just happened to stumble upon the second video, and I was like "Oooh, he needs to do Saving Private Ryan and Enemy at the Gates!" and then I saw this one. He explains things so well. Most of us who just know about snipers from movies kind of assume it's all about marksmanship, but there's also so much calculation and intelligence involved as well.
Do you think that he actually did that math in his head? he knows it already because he has calculated that many times, 40 inches is almost equal to a meter, so that is one of the most common conversions you do as a sniper, also, he doesnt even know what he is doing, that "constant" is just the conversion between inches to milimiters.
@@withexpectancy5818 anyways, it is ez math, 25x40=1000, thats common sense and 0,4x40 is the same as 4x4=16, so 1000+16=1016. Easy arithmetic 1st grade math
@@frooskys22 Why are you triggered? We know that he certainly had the calculation in mind but it is his way of reasoning and explaining that is fascinating. And the fact that he incorporates so much science into what he does is cool. Lol
The most amazing sniper operation I ever heard of was shown in "Captain Phillips". I still can't believe it was possible. 3 SEAL snipers on the fantail of a ship (moving in the waves) zeroing in on three targets they could only see by infrared, in a little, bobbing lifeboat, and they all fire together and eliminate all three targets.
The lifeboat is on display at the UDT/SEALs Museum in Florida.
I was hoping that scene was going to get shown! Really wanted to hear what he had to say about it

The other scary thing he forgot to mention with saving private ryan is the fact that in order for a scope shot to work, the enemy sniper has to be dialed in on you perfectly too. It has been recorded on happening, once and only once. That means you both are staring at each other and you pulled the trigger first. You would have literally been a fraction of a second from death.
That shot was debunked in MYTH BUSTER. You can't fight math.
@@leoperidot482Apparently only because a different scope (a modern type) was being used which was unlike the one that Carlos Hathcock used.
For that to happen, shouldnt you actually aim the Gun of your target to allign the Scope for that shot? If the Angle is off even by one millimeter, you just crush the scope and nothing else.
Eh less than that tight. You would not try and intentionally shoot through a scope, so for it to happen it would be a guy turning to face you the second you fired. You definitely had at least a second or two before he truly reacted and tried shooting.
@@fearedjames no it is that tight. The lenses are curved inside that scope. Yes no sniper would ever intentionally aim there but they might be going for a headshot and the bullet happened to hit the scope. In order for that bullet to make it through the scope it has to hit exactly square on all lenses. Which also means the lenses in the hit scope have to be mounted perfect. Myth Busters did an amazing teat on this to show how hard it is to get a bullet to go through one.

This was very well explained and I love how fair he was in his ratings. He wasn't overly critical of the entertainment factor.
@DaddyEdibles he gave the last one a 2/10 because the gun was too heavy. How could you possibly say is ratings were Fair?
@@erasmus_locke Uh, because that is a fair point? He said the gun was so heavy that the gun should have been carried in two separate parts. The guy is moving with around four-gallon paint cans of weight for miles like it weighed nothing. Doesn't matter if you are a trained soldier or not, you would be absolutely wiped. Sure, he should have probably actually reviewed the sniper shooting (unless it wasn't part of the scene, I didn't watch the movie), but that is a fair point. Guns are a LOT heavier than they look.

I love how he broke down the one-mile shot and just rolled his eyes when talking about all the factors, like rotation of the planet, wind (here, there, in between here and there), humidity, elevation, drop. You could take the same shot from a machine, and three bullets would land fifty feet from each other. But, it's Hollywood, and of course it might have happened with a ton of luck.

I feel like videos like this serve at least four different purposes at once.
They entertain, they inform, they demonstrate just how uninformed most people are who have not had extensive training and experience with a complicated job, especially combat related, and they really show just how much research, time, and care go into getting a fictional depiction right.
Everyone "thinks" their a sniper, until they get behind the gun at an actual distance where the mathematics come in, (bullet drop, wind sheer, etc.) Then it's always the guns fault. It's not sighted properly, the ammo is wrong, oh, the wind picked up on a breeze less day. 😂😂 Seen it a hundred times. Patience is the snipers best friend.
I figure if you make it far enough that you actually become a sniper, get put in the field, and have to use the rifle, you should be prepared for factors like tedious/difficult math, wind, all that. @@shawndashno6022
The formula for estimating range using mil dots is as follows:
Range (in yards) = Size of Target (in inches) / Size of Target (in inches per mil)
Here's a breakdown of the steps:
Measure the size of the target in inches. In your example, the target is 40 inches tall.
Determine the size of one mil. In the US military, the standard size is often considered to be 3.6 inches per mil. However, mil-dot scopes may have different subtensions (the size of the mils), so it's essential to know the specific subtension of your scope. Let's assume your scope uses 3.6 inches per mil.
Divide the size of the target in inches by the size of one mil to get the range in yards:
Range (in yards) = 40 inches / (3.6 inches/mil) = 11.11 yards per mil
Now, if you said the target appeared 2 mildots high in your scope, you can calculate the range:
Range (in yards) = 2 mildots x 11.11 yards/mil = 22.22 yards
So, if the target is 2 mildots high in your scope, it is approximately 22.22 yards away.
In your provided formula with X as 25.4, it seems like the conversion from inches to millimeters is happening.

That shot through the scope was recreated (no elevation) on Myth Busters. They rendered it a myth. Later, I saw a different show recreate it, same result. THEN, they used a scope that was common for the time. It only had two lenses, whereas modern scopes have 3 or more. With the two lens scope, they were able to shoot through the scope and contact the dummy in the eye.
Nick also.did it
The only real problems with that shot are the elevation and distance. He's shooting upwards at about 400 yards. At that point, gravity affects the bullet, requiring the shooter to aim above the scope, causing the bullet to impact at a downward angle.
I'm glad you brought up the both eyes open thing, i thought i was weird for doing that but it just seems to make my shots alot more accurate than just one open. Things just line up better, idk how to explain.

Jesus how smart is this guy? I'm literally thinking I'm going to watch a fun Insider video about snipers and now I'm learning physics- and he's doing a better job at teaching it than my physics teacher did. Hat's off to you sir!!
Facts!
Yea, this shlt is insane
There is something so amazing about listening to a guy talk about something he is an expert in. It so satisfying to hear someone that is extremely good at their job. This was a great watch
That heavily depends on the subject.
@@thesavantart8480 I quote "heavily" 😂☝🏾
His "job" was to kill people... in a foreign far away land the US invaded without any warrant. And nobody seems to mind.
But maybe that's because he just killed Arabs?
Yeah he is a murderer, with false flags and the government behind him...
@@stoffeoscarsson6572 I know US Americans can't see that and don't like to hear it.
But if you go to a strangers place, enter it forcefully under false pretense and kill someone.. that's murder. Doesn't matter how they like to call it, it's simply murder

Incredible feedback. Fascinating in a morbid sort of way.

Imagine having the war nickname “The Reaper” smh that’s badass
Either that or "The Demon" (Master Chief for example)

SportsPUN championships lol what
I love Nick Irving, Definitely an inspirational man
This man calculates the Earth rotation as well. He is the real life Deadshot.
It's actually called the Coriolis Effect what snipers use to gauge the rotation of the earth/curvature etc
Most well trained sniper should be able to do it; it's impressive yes, but not some unique skill held by a godly few.
Pilots have to do that and anyone doing something in the sky🤦♂️
Every sniper has to know the Coriolis Effect.
Lol
Me: That shot didn’t look so good.
Him: That is perfect, exactly what I would do
Me: brilliant, amazing shot
LMAOO
@Angel Rodríguez probably the whole video lol
Agreed. I was like
"That was a weird shot.."
But he was just talking about how good it was and I just sat there, 100% understanding what he is talking about.
the scene where the dude shoots all the soldiers one by one had me thinking he was gonna give it a 1/10. then he gave it a 10/10
@@brysonbridges1496 well the targets were close and its not that hard to hit targets that are standing still from that range lol
finally, Stalingrad! the wrapping of sling in the rifle is a classic Marine Corp technique. Love the breakdowns.
Mad respect man, thank you for your service to our Country. I can tell you a real one
Him: Multiply by a constant, divide by....

“He has a 33.00 K/D”
i got a rocket launcher with scavenger lemme thin that K/D for ye.
Well he has a 33 k/d If you only include his middle eastern kills
You cant divide by 0
@@TheCorney this is very true. His KD will not be final
Corney correct. His K/D ratio will never be determined until after he dies. And that’s only 33 we know of ... considering he was S.O. there’s probably kills he can’t even talk about.
He’s teaching me math and I actually feel like listening
Enforce U.K. schools to add Sniper Tactics in Math classes to get better results
anyone else check their attic?
Another formula, using a Mil-radian reticle is:
{(Height of target x 1000)/number of Mil-dots on target}
Height of target is calculated in yards or meters. A six foot tall male is 2 yards tall, or, 1.7 meters tall.
Next to change range to target in either Mil-radians (M-rads) or Minutes of Angle (MOA).
For yards: M-rads = 3.6 inches; MOA = 1.047 inches.
For meters: M-rads = 10cm; MOA = 2.91cm
Multiply one of these constants by the distance to target in 100 yard units, or, 100 meter units. Example: you have 500 yard target. There are five each 100 yard units. So for M-rads turrets. 5 x 3.6 = 18. Next get the ballistic drop of the bullet you are using. We will use the .308 Winchester bullet, 175 grain, boat tail, match grade, FMJ. There is 63 inches of drop in 500 yards. Calculation is 63 ÷ 18 = 3.5. Index 3.5 Mils on the top turret.
😂
Crazy right ✌️me to
Thank you for your service! I knew there was a lot that went into being a sniper but I didn’t know how much! Wow I’m sure there’s much more but this was absolutely eye opening and fascinating.
Great job.... brought back so many memories from Ft. Ord, CA 1970
It is equally badass as it is terrifying that he was actually designated “The Reaper”.
And he has “33 kills” as if it’s a video game or something
Johnnie Walker ofc it’s just a weird thing that worldwide everyone records it like that
Dead cockroach in my brassiere go play cod lmao 33 kills is alot actually
AnimeKing I wasn’t referring to call of duty but ok 👌🏾
Matthew McGonigal I understand. Thx for ur service tho
I like when he said on DemolitionRanch:
*"If you heard the shot, you weren't the target"*
Yeahh
That is the only place where I remember him from.
Wtf that’s scary.
@@sc_krispy9459 but also awesome.. bullets travel super sonic right
so first you get hit and then you hear the sound of the bullet
Depends on Certain Things like Wind Direction and Proximity To Vertical Surfaces that Reflect Sound
Coriolis effect is the most badass part of this
Enemy at the gates is one of my favorite movies. Glad it was shown here.
The fact that he notices the woman’s hair blowing in the wind and figures the MPH tells you the man knows his job.
The fact that his nickname is the reaper. EPIC!
What tells me the man knew his job is the fact that he is a ex spec ops sniper
@@Kevin_drinks_Lead I thought for the longest time that Nick wasn’t actually a sniper and it was just one of those jokes on Demolition ranch. But then I saw a photo of Nick when he was in the Rangers and damn it hit me hard 😂

@Johnny Dominguez liberals make the best snipers then

Johnny Dominguez you mean just like how our president dodged the draft on account of “bone spurs” while shitting on military heroes?
I don’t get it
6:20 Everyone's gangsta until he multiplied 40 ×25.4 in two seconds.
You just have to break it down.
10x25 is 250.
Times that by 4, you get 1000.
Then 4x4 is 16. (this is the same as doing 40x0.4, just simpler to do quickly)
Add it up, 1016.
he said it's a constant so I'm guessing he has the table memorized
25.4 is mm/inch -- I wonder if it's just that the weapon is in metric.
