    I'll admit that his breakdown of Blackhawk Down was intriguing. He spotted the "unrealistic" parts - which were, in fact, exactly what happened in real life. Going during the day, and right ontop of the target downtown. Precisely what caused the problems that day, and why Garrison took full responsibility.

      Agreed, these videos always seem to have at least one movie like this when the “expert” reviewing either hasn’t seen the movie to understand the context or doesn’t know enough about the event the movie may be based on.
      In this case i’m kinda shocked he didn’t know more about the movie/incident. I would have thought that it would have been used as a teaching tool for special ops teams worldwide - maybe it’s just in the planning.
      But yeah he should have said, this was a bad idea, because of this incident it’s no longer how it’s typically done or at least the risk levels are much better known.

    In my personal experience, I've found that the bigger the flame in an explosion, the weaker it is. Most of the IEDs, mortars, grenades, etc that I've seen go off have a minimal fireball if any. The forces are so powerful that it puts the fire out. Sometimes the explosions create secondary fires though. Movie explosions are so far off from the real thing.
    Also, if you're close enough to an explosion where it throws you away from it (every action film ever made) chances are you're dead. The concussive forces alone (without any shrapnel) will kill you. These forces will rock your brain and destroy your lungs.

      @RoarOfWolverine Před 2 lety +6

      This is true. Something Hollywood doesn’t to want to know, because a real grenade or explosive isn’t as visually stimulating. The more flash and fire just means you’re expending the energy on just that, a light show. You want all of that power in the concussion and shock wave, something Hollywood rarely shows, a shock wave.
      Even a grenade should create a small shock wave. You want that fast evacuation of air to help propel the shrapnel, which does the real damage, not a bunch of flame and smoke.
      i have worked as a special effects designer for film and television and many of their explosions, like a car explosion, is actually a lot of flame canons and air canons mounted in the vehicle aimed out every window. The air canons propel pieces of styrofoam and other lightweight materials to simulate shrapnel.
      There is never an actual boom of an explosion on set. They add the sound in post production. They really just want to see as much bright flame and junk flying around as possible. Now they add the flames in post or enhance them with CGI. Hollywood gives people who have never been in the military a really bad expectation of the real thing.
      Even when real dynamite or TNT go off, there is little to no flames. All the energy is put into the concussion, not the flames, but all TNT in movies has to create a mushroom cloud of flames and smoke. Any good explosion wants to evacuate all of the air from an area, then have all of that air slam back together to fill the vacuum the explosion caused. That’s the reverse, or implosion, which is just as deadly.
      One real mistake in Saving Private Ryan has to be the bullets hitting guys underwater with deadly force. Even the Mythbusters proved that the velocity of a bullet is severally slowed once hitting the resistance of the water. The higher the caliber round, the less penetration it had.
      A .22 caliber round will go deeper into water with deadly force than will a .50 caliber. In fact, the .50 cal rounds disintegrated upon hitting the water’s surface. The force of the round destroyed itself upon meeting the resistance of the water surface.
      If you’re two feet or more underwater, you’re pretty much safe from any round. A small .22 round may penetrate the water enough to hit you, but it won’t have enough velocity to even pierce the skin, much less do deadly damage like they showed in Saving Private Ryan.
      It was quite a shame, because so much else of the opening scene they got right, just not those hits underwater and of course, the explosions.

    This is very helpful to me as an actor, because more often than not the difference in realism and authenticity isn't directors and effects, but how well we actors can portray these characters without being overly dramatic while getting details like how to hold weapons and even wear our uniforms correctly.
    I remember shooting a scene for Daredevil, the series, the cops in the scene were real NYPD cops doing this as a side gig. So one of them asked the Director, "Should we have our guns out?" and the Director said, "Do what you would normally do in this situation." The guns came out; perfect action, entirely realistic.

      @JohnOhkumaThief - have you seen Kajaki?
      I’m a military veteran and most Hollywood dialogue is utter bollocks (crap). This movie was spot on.
      The speech, banter and inflections were exactly how British soldiers speak.
      I discovered later that the actors actually met and conversed with the real guys because this film is based upon true events.
      To avoid spoiling it - watch it without reading up about it and definitely avoid seeing any trailers.

    • @marks6734
      @marks6734 Před rokem +1

      BHD is one of the more well done “war movies” and yes. The events happened and the movie portrayed them extremely realistically. What Billy is referring to is the more finer details:
      A 40mm GLA has very little kick. It doesn’t make your rifle bounce up like that. The gold top rounds don’t make flame and flash like that. Just bang and frag.
      The rappelling and “fast rope” stuff like that?
      It was done. It’s one of the reasons 2 blackhawks got clipped so easily in a large operation.
      What Billy is saying is that it’s not done anymore. Certainly not by British or Australian infantry and SF units. That’s what we call a static and stationary infill and it’s extremely high risk. It’s why we use fast moving armoured troop carriers like PMVs/Bushmasters and have air units for overwatch and support but they’re never stationery in an area of operations.
      The enemy confirmations and such in American Sniper are extremely unrealistic as Billy says and a sniper leaving an over watch position to join a patrol etc. is ridiculous. That movie whilst based on a real person is extremely “Hollywoodised” to make it more cinematic.
      The only thing I’d argue with is the 7.62 rounds zipping through water in Saving Private Ryan.
      Ballistic trials have proven its impossible for rounds to move like that in water. In fact the larger the caliber the more inefficient they are when hitting water which is 800% more dense than air and the energy dispersion of the round is extremely rapid. You can still be hit with rounds in shallow water. It’s possible to still be shot in shallow water. But it’s proven that all rounds, even larger rounds from 30mm weapon systems are basically non lethal beyond 30cm of water

    Saving Private Ryan was the only movie where I had to sit outside of the cinema and think about what I just sat and watched for nearly 3 hours. Turns out I wasn’t the only one as several people did the same thing. We all sat in silence and had the same shocked expression on our faces. It was a pretty emotional moment. No other movie has ever done that for me.

      Indeed it was a very intense film and quite realistic. Some people have actually questioned the whole plot of the film, but these 'sole survivor' rescue mission did actually happen. After All of the Sullivan Brothers got killed on a Navy destroyer, they brought in a policy were they would save at least 1 family member to preserve family bloodlines. There's a bit more to it than that, but that's the jist.

      At the time, those opening scenes were the most vivid war scenes ever in a film. Now they're more commonplace, but at the time I had never seen such chaos and the "fog of war" as that landing scene, and I have watched many war movies. It was a vast improvement over what came before, cinematically. And yes it was sobering - like being a witness to the real thing.

      They are both right, honestly. It just depends on the bullet and its velocity entering the water. Supersonic FMJ bullets will tend to quickly fragment upon striking the surface of the water; subsonic bullets aren't subjected to as much shock and can penetrate through water more easily. And there are also AP bullets with steel or tungsten penetrators, where the penetrator would be able to separate from the rest of the bullet and continue through the water at high speed due to their narrow cross-section and much harder and tougher material. There are even some bullets specifically designed to work under water.
      Given his military experience, I would imagine he saw people shot under water with armour penetrating rounds.

    • @randysmith3731
      @randysmith3731 Před 4 lety +1

      It was figured out through controlled tests that smaller gauge rounds tend to be able to travel further and have a better chance of hitting someone underwater than higher calibre rounds. The larger rounds encounter more resistance in water which greatly shortens the effective lethal range.
      Those people he saw shot under water we're probably shot with standard 7.62mm rounds (the primary ammo used in M16s and Canadian forces rifles).

In several of these, the original participants were at the filming location, ensuring the portrayal was as accurate as possible. • @FireDramine7
      @FireDramine7 Před 4 lety +22

      @Mattchew UK I just wanted to confirm that every military has similar but not the same tactics sense of cleaning house e.g. I am not saying their stuff was wrong but lemme name a fww examples that just come to mind:
      When going up the stairs one person focuses always to the right, so you always got one person that looks at the newest angle, opening it up all the way. The other looks straight up. In the mission it wasnt always done.
      When cleaning houses you dont wanna stick together like they did, you only got two people on the stairs at once until theyre at top but you dont lose view contact (one of the rules of house clearing)
      When moving along a corridor you always have your back covered and not turn your back to a potentially dangerous angle like the guy did who got shot. You coulda made a pass there, which is the front person looking at the door, then quickly moving to the other side of the door but always facing it to secure it while the guy from the back tags along with you and secures the stairs whilst a third person secures the door from the other side.
      The problem is that the perfect mission doesnt exist. The mission in the game is executed well and professionally but mistakes are always made and heck I couldnt have done it as well because I got less experience. The game scene is pretty realistic although I dont get why the characters were always so close together in the scenes. Not very navy seal like from what Ive seen from their training in videos.

Me and my buddies used to tear apart movies we watched together as teenagers (one of my friends worked at a place like blockbuster, we got to see everything days before it was released in the store), then write reviews for the store under pen names and the store would post them on a board for people to read. There was one veteran soldier who talked to us one day in the store. He started talking to us about our review on Gran Torino and how we didn't know shit about retired soldiers. We admitted we didn't, and he gave us a calm and gathered earful about how we wrote our reviews. We liked this ol' vet so much, we included him in our group. He broke down everything for us and didn't ruin any movies, just clarified the reality of what we were entertained by. Gave us all a new perspective, and one of our group ended up working for a local paper because of his reviews. Every single person has different knowledge, and it's nice to see when people open your eyes to get rid of your ignorance towards dramatization in films.
