I have never heard anyone say to not teach your child how to read. Where did you hear this from?

Its actually VERY common among many of the biggest toddler accounts on IG. Many people argue that not only is early reading NOT important, but that teaching a child to read too early is often detrimental because it takes away from their play time and creates a negative association with reading (presumably because they were "forced" to do something they weren't ready for.) VERY popular opinion.

@@toddlerscanread I was homeschooled and didn't read till I was 7 because my parents had heard about it being supposedly better to play when kids are young, but the kids I've met or seen online that their parents taught them to read younger are way more conversant than kids I've met who weren't taught to read and weren't homeschooled, like sometimes kids can catch back up, I ended up being a 12.6+ grade at reading on my CAT tests when I graduated early from highschool in 10th grade, but that might not have been the case if I gone to my district's public school, reading to kids also helps them learn how to speak more clearly! The children I've met at age 5 or 7 that weren't taught how to read from more broken families with not very motivated parents unfortunately I couldn't understand 80% of what they said to me, and I eternally became there favorite person, 'for some reason'... because for the few minutes I was at their house to visit someone else I talked with them about their toys and stuff and tried to understand that 20% I could. Because of that I had no idea people could teach toddlers to read and speak before the age of 7 as I don't recall anything before I was 5, so I just thought the kids I couldn't understand were only slightly behind kid's potential ability(though every kid is different) and I was really shocked when I found out more recently many kids can learn to not only speak well but read at ages younger than 5! Your channel is one of the ones that showed me this amazing fact, thank you!

My best friend knew how to read when she was 3. Notice that I didn't say she learned or was taught. She just started to pick up by herself that certain shapes were special.
Her younger brother is dyslexic, and that learning process wasn't automatic for him.
People are different, and what might be amazing for one child is going to be detrimental for another. It's up to the parents who spend the most time with their child every day to make the final decision about how they learn and grow until they can start making those decisions themselves.

It's not an uncommon opinion among bigger toddler accounts on IG that teaching your child to read when they're young could be detrimental to their later development
