It’s because of you that I bought this bad boy and actually liked it!!! What a beautiful coffee from start to finish
You made a lot of people happy with your efforts. A lot of people really wanted to hear about this one so it's only fitting that the coffee was rewarding for yourself as well 🙂
Great review of an amazing sounding coffee
Thanks Jonathan, always nice to hear from ya 🙂
You're a legend Zack!
It's true, he is
My favorite mejorado from Sey but not the sweetest. Will post my full review later but I liked how it tasted like a classic kenyan, savory tomato taste and smell too, but also had an underlining candy sweetness that reminded me of sugary cotton candy at times. It pairs really nicely with the more delicate, gesha-like sidra from them.
Thanks for the feedback Carl. Sounds like our experiences were most in-line on this one while you had some positive experiences with the sidra as well. Really appreciate it!
@@CoffeeReviews Ofc! I think you would have enjoyed the sidra for sure, it has a lemon candy attribute to it (still consuming). Also, I wanted to tell you that La Cabra has updated its offerings within the last week with Ecuador Typica including a rare washed offering from La Papaya.
I actually ordered this along with Pepe's Sidra and the Gesha from Juan Pena. My Gesha got cancelled but they still sent me the two Pepes. I enjoyed the Mejorado far more than the Sidra, which had this overpowering and unpleasant herbal quality unlike other Sidras I've had this year. The Mejorado has been really great and I pretty much agree with all your notes on it. Definitely enjoyed it more than the Luzon or Lomas. I also got the Pull & Pour Coffee Club's Olger Rogel Mejorado, which was an exclusive from Sey (don't think they sold it on the website), and that was also pretty outstanding. Not sure which I'd choose between Rogel and Pepe, but that's not a bad problem to have, lol.
This is tremendous feedback as I was really curious about the sidra. Never intended on buying it (as we review too much Sey) but would have loved to have tried it as we've never had one of Pepe's sidras before. Unfortunate it didn't turn out well for you but it also sounds like we didn't miss much.
It's great/interesting to see how much you've been interested in the mejorado coffees. Feels like a lot of people are really jumping on the excitement with them.....also jealous you had that Olger Rogel....but this feedback was very valuable so thanks again!
@@CoffeeReviews Of course! Yeah, the Sidra was odd and I've started to wonder if maybe there was some kind of defect because it was a very strange bitter herbal quality. I had to go quite low on water temperature to get any kind of acidity. So, bummer.
And yeah! Most of my interest in Mejorados came from a Discord server I'm in. Lots of people there were getting very excited for the start of the new year/new harvests from Ecuador and a lot of us got to try all of Sey's Mejorado releases. Let me know if you'd ever like to join! It's always exciting when I see you've reviewed a coffee that I also got to try :)
@carsonptz have been invited to a couple discord servers but not sure how much time is free to add that to our tasks. Perhaps in time as it is interesting to see how others feel about some of the coffees being released
Just FYI: SEY just released another three Pepe coffees earlier today. Got myself a Mejorado!
Was wondering how long it would take people to bring it to our attention. It's actually the same coffee as this one. Took a look at the box set and thought about it. Thanks for letting us know 🙂
Yup! Got it largely based on this review! I’m relatively new to high-end coffee so I’d be curious what is your approach to freezing of your favorite beans? Do you freeze it right away or let it rest in room temperature and then freeze? Are you freezing individual doses or in the bag? What containers do you use? If you haven’t done a video on this topic already perhaps you could consider it in the future? Thanks!
We discussed it briefly in one of our videos earlier this year, believe it was a monthly recap but can't remember for sure.
We purchased a bunch of deep metal tins, which means we freeze the coffees in individual doses. We opt to freeze it around the peak point (so usually we freeze it after we finished reviewing it). Interestingly enough, we pulled this exact coffee out Saturday to make it for someone and it was nearly as good as when we first froze it demonstrating that it works well.
@@CoffeeReviews great thanks! Super helpful
Thanks
Absolutely. Know a lot of people wanted to hear about this one 🙂
Sorry for a redundant question, but what's your typical V60 technique, and what's your typical coffee dose?
It's Coffea Circulor's V60 technique and it's usually 20g
@@CoffeeReviewsthanks!
🙂
@@CoffeeReviews 3 cups in, not enough to truly judge, but they have been consistent. Had an Ethiopian Layloo, washed Pac, and a Yemeni. Going to brew a Brundi from passenger later today. I'll give further remarks after double digits.
Beyond their recipe, do you swirl, WDT, or make a little pit in the grounds? Also when they say"concentric circles" do you just do continual circles at a set circumference, or vary the circumference as you pour?
@JusKJVthankful none of the above, and, as far as pours go, it's whatever the circles are needed to ensure all the grounds are wet.
Will say this, controversial as it may be, I don't think any of this matters. Have had it on good word from multiple barista champions that the only things that really matter are water and grind consistency. Like this recipe because of its simplicity allowing us to focus on the more important things. If this recipe seems simple, that's because it is. It always has been.
We will make our brew guide and coffee set-up video eventually, and a lot of people will likely be surprised how simple everything is. Will always answer people's questions on our method, but never really felt it made much of a difference. Cheers ☕️
Hi, you should definitly try the Sey Reina de Saba if you can (Origami style). Keep on the good work. Kind regards
Thanks for the kind words. Does not look like they're currently offering it but we'll keep an eye out for it 🙂
Zack definitely stole the spotlight of this review lol, hopefully it wasn’t too far of a drive for him.
Nothing on the East Coast is THAT bad, relatively speaking. Really appreciative though, a great friend 🙂
That late afternoon Manhattan and Brooklyn traffic was killer
