Born in Manhattan, Grew up in Brownville on Dumont Ave directly across from Besty Head pool / Park, Then to Pennsylvania Ave / Blake Ave. Then my Parents bought a house on Pine St. / Pitkin Ave. We as kids ALWAYS was playing at East NY High School and Euclid Park (Stick Ball, Baseball and pick up Football) Graduated from Franklin K. Lane in 1974... Then join the US Navy in 1976... A lot has changed, my last visit to NYC and there was on 2015... Best Wishes to all of the Residents of EAST NEW YORK!!!!! I will always love NYC, Brooklyn and the NY Yankees..... 👊💪🙏
💪💯 Respect. Thanks for watching
Neighboring Brownsville is exponential more dangerous than ENY. I remember like ten years ago in Brownsville, a baby in a stroller was shot when a gang was targeting his dad. Dad outright refused to cooperate with NYPD and attacked reporters at his babies funeral. Two years later dad pops up back in the news wanted for a robbery on the subway. Absolute menace.
I have to say for a busy area of NYC I’m impressed how clean much of this area is. For that amount of traffic I didn’t hear that much honking that you’d hear in. Manhattan. It looks like a relatively safe area.
I have to agree. It seems ok, especially compared to some of the videos you see out of Detroit, Gary, Killadelphia, San Fran, or any number of other places on youtube.
People don't honk like lunatics in the areas where they actually live!
I noticed how litter free many of the streets were too . I guess a few residents are proud of the neighborhood .
I have another piece of local history for you. At 2:53 on the left - where Riverdale Avenue intersects with New Lots -- you can see a nondescript looking oblong shaped building. This used to be an under-the-radar maternity clinic back in the 1920's and 30's. Why was in undercover? If you needed to terminate a pregnancy, it could be arranged here. Adoptions, which were also done and kept within the community could also be arranged here. It was impossible to be a single mother up through the 1960's -- but the community would make sure your child would be well cared for. I'm pretty sure my father was born here, but nobody liked talking about it. The police knew about all of this, but looked away for the right price of course.
Wow! Thanks for the history Eddi. Very interesting.
What a way times have changed for the worse. Singlemotherhood seems like the standard in the community nowadays
Looks quite civilized, compared to the Kensington ave area in Philly, if you ask me 😊
I was thinking the same
Slum areas in nyc always look a lot better than slum sreas in orher US cities- no burned out ruins, shops open, no gangs in the street.
In these Environments There are no Doctors, Lawyers,Accountants, school Teachers coming Out of these Areas.
BLACK AMERICAN That is
Because these Environments don't Produce Black Americans.
They produce So-Called Black Americans & they
Are of a Lesser Quality Especially when it comes To their level of Intelligence straight up Facts.
It might look clean and nice as some said in the comments. The thing is this neighborhood has a huge concentration of housing projects and gangs. Stuff normally pops off in the courtyards. Also, there’s a famous prostitution track in the area which starts when the sun goes down.
I used to shop at Gateway mall, it was safe and all but leaving late at night I always avoided taking the streets and would just jump straight on the Belt Pkway to get the hell out of there asap. I don’t think anything bad would happen but the whole vibe was sketchy. Brownsville is worse tho.
My hometown(I still live here) but I think Brownsville is actually the most dangerous in Brooklyn,East NY is probably second and Bed Stuy(even if it's gentrified) is not far behind. But in The Bronx i think Mott Haven and Hunts Point are the most dangerous just my opinion though.
Agreed 😊
Back in 1986 we saw a dude get thrown off of that bridge in the Bronx onto the Crossbronx expressway he died instantly! We lived in NJ at the time and went out there for a birthday party lol my mom never took us back 😜
@@DJaySplitSecond damn that's horrific,Also I actually have family in Paterson,New Jersey,I go there sometimes
@@MusicFan..... my wife grew up in Paterson but her mom kept her far away from East Side High
What 'bout Manhatten?
It looks pretty nice
Right? Much nicer than Flint or Detroit.
Thanks for the footage.
Thanks for watching!
I was a rookie EMT out of Station 34 on Pennsylvania Ave in the 90's, first shooting I ever had was on Sheffield and Livonia, an hour later had my first stabbing, found a guy laying facedown with a knife in his back in the hallway in the Pink Houses, place was wild back then, learned a lot working there.
Nyc is a very tame city in 2023 Year 1990 it’s was a scary place in south bronx and parts of Brooklyn I think period from 1985 to 1993 was very bad afterwards huge improvement
SUPER FACTS, I was about to say something very similar…..I know it’s not all sunshine & rainbows in NewYork but these drive thrus don’t give any sense of violence or high crime….driving thru a lot of southern states & you will get that sense of danger / violence just from a CZcams video because down south has a lot more dilapidated structures than NewYork city etc….the concrete jungle has tall apartment buildings that are sometimes 15 to 20 floors high, so in a NewYork city drive through all you see is a tall building & some folks who never been to NewYork won’t even know they are projects unless they actually visit themselves & get out of the car & visit someone who lives there…..
This is a paradise compared to the 1970's and early 80's. The 70's was the worst because there were still occupied slum buildings all over East New York and when the 1977 Blackout came many were set on fire. And they were just left to rot for years. I remember streets where every building was boarded up or burnt out and there was a Boxed X in white chalk on front of building indicating it's empty. But it took till the early 90's to put up new housing. The 70';s in East New York was for survivors only.
Thanks for sharing. Thank you for watching
I worked that neighborhood for NY Telephone in the 80s.. Much worse then, and I had to go in the back alleys and inside some pretty bad shitholes.. In Fact 6:04 was where my old Telephone company garage was. Snediker av.
@@John-zo1wt I believe you urban renewal didn;t get to ENY till the mid 90''s
77 blackout was devastating to all the businesses along Broadway. All were looted and burned. It used to be a popular shopping area until then. Most never reopened.
Ah, memories. at :31 where I went to middle school, George Gershwin Junior High School, at 1:55 is the building my family lived in when I was born on Hegeman Ave. and Van Sicilen, at 3:17 on the right side you can see the corner building at Wyona and Riverdale. My grandmother used to live in the first floor apartment. The building across the street where it says Deli used to be a Drug Store. Some of my best memories are visiting her in that apartment.
Glad video brought back good memories. Will do more parts of this East New York series so stay tuned. Thanks for watching
Hey Eddi just to Lyk some of your other great comments on other video were removed. Please don’t be offended. That wasn’t done by me. All comments were deleted.
@@ghettomerica No worries, thanks for leaving me a message. It happens.
Is this supposed to be a bad neighborhood? It looks quite nice, especially compared to how it was in the 1980's.
At night it’s a different story
@@DJaySplitSecond nothing like it used to be
Lol looks can be deceiving, and it's day time, we all know freaks come out at night, why would you be out in broad daylight committing crimes, they said violent not stupid, gotta say tho didn't see not one piece of trash paper exc
Dont look good to me, I sure in the hell wouldn't be living there..your freaking NUTS...
Right! Even the payment looked good
5 seconds in you run into cops with lights going
It's funny to see all these people saying it's a cakewalk that never been here but the people that been to Brownsville and ENY know what it's really like. A 10 minute video is just a drive by. It won't tell the story.
💯
Man, this area nice in comparison to most large and midsized cities. I didn't see 1 pothole
I love how some are commenting on how nice and quiet it is. LOL now do this on the weekend in July and August.
Don’t worry. We will lol. There will be a part 3.
If you haven’t seen part 1, please watch here:

@@ghettomerica LOL keep the windows down so everyone can hear how nice and quiet it is.....just be careful of the pop pops and I don't mean fireworks....
East NY and Brownville are still bad especially the Ville but compared to the early 90s,it has calmed down alot though. If I had to choose between hanging out in Brownville or one of the hoods in Chicago, I rather take my chances in Brownville and this is coming from someone who used to live in ENY and grew up in the Brownville back in the days lol
Being a violent neighborhood is NOTHING to be proud of or brag about, that's not the only way life is supposed to be.
Thats my hood! I know those streets like the back of my hand
I drove through there for years to visit my sister and nieces - never saw anything bad. I also used to work at schools in that area - a different school every week - never saw anything bad but that was up to 2018 . Dont know anything after that.
My great grandfather escaped the Russo Japanese war in 1904 ,The Russian czar forced Jewish boys to serve for 20 or 25 years. My great grandfather built many of the houses in ENY. The Jewish population immigrants would live according to family and would live side by side in rows of houses, it was a warm, loving amazing environment, My great grandfather would give me a nickel in 1960 to go buy potato chips when I was five, it was so safe I would go down the block and buy the chips on my own. The Hendrix Street synagogue
Was nearby.
Our old apartment buildings were replaced by buildings too big for the streets for warehousing the masses. The neighborhood trees are gone. Glad I lived there when I did, but it's forever just a memory.
I feared for my life just watching the video! You the man !! 🎉 - keep it up 👍
Thank you Nelson. I really appreciate the kind words. I’m glad you get what I’m trying to convey. Hopefully I can visit your city some day soon. Thank you for watching and supporting me. Salute!
East New York has a bad reputation from the 70s and 80s... I lived in East New York and although it has it's issues, it is no where near as bad as other neighborhoods I have seen... I would live in East New York again...
Looks like any large inner city in the day light.
Bonito lugar ,parece as ruas de bairros chiques de São Paulo ,Brasil
Grew up there in the 80s. Glad I escaped and am raising my sons in the suburbs
Looked very quiet. Must all happen at night.
Thank you all for watching. If you liked this video, don’t forget to watch part 1.

Looks to me like everyone in Brooklyn drives a new car.
I would like to visit East NY. Is there an Embassy Suites in the area?
Unsure about embassy suites. But there are a ton of Hotel options in nyc in general.
what make it dangerous? you have 30 seconds to answer
Crime, murders, shootings… gang beefs. Everyday ills of living in a lower income urban environment.
@@ghettomerica 🙄
Looks nothing like it did before the Republicans rebuilt the neighborhood in the 90's. Nothing.
Reminds me of all of Chicago
The bad areas in Chicago make East New York and Brownsville in Brooklyn look like Heaven lol. I rather take my chances in the Ville than step foot in the hoods of chi town.
ENY has the most shelters. Also a lot of hard working people. Born and raised here, love it. It is on the gentrification track like ALL of NYC.👀
I expected to see a lot more litter dumped on the streets than I did . Nice job people .
I don't see too much violence.
This is Broccolino!😁
seems like a nice community to me
It looks normal
Grew up on Sheffield Ave went to Thomas Jefferson. Played stick ball. Ringaleavllo. Skelly. Tag. Kick the can almost drowned in besty Head pool. watch the girls jump double Dutch. Play hopscotch. Kids don't Play street games today. Summer time was a good time growing up in Brooklyn. Spike Lee did a good job of how we lived in Crooklyn.😂
Здравствуйте. Снимаете на телефон?
So that means you just can't randomly just flip somebody off? Of course unless you're in your car and driving, then they can't do anything. Hehehe... 😆
Looks decent to me i'm in Upstate NY its some slums there
What part of Upstate you're at? Certain parts of Newburgh is sketchy and reminds me of NYC back in the 80s early 90s. Poughkeepsie has its rough spots but it's building up and alot nicer compared to when I used to be out there the early 2000s.
The way you're driving will attract attention. You're driving like you are looking for somebody lol. You don't have to drive that slow and always stopping. It reminds me of some movies from the 80s or 90s lol
It look nice but it go down in da east I'm from killer Miller
I had family the lived on Miller (bet Heggeman and Linden Blvd). It was wild in those tenements.
Can y show us the most quiet hood 😊 please 🎉
Ha ha. Camden is quiet lol. Thank you for watching.
@@ghettomerica y welcome thanks 😊
Juxtapose a metropolis state side with just abt any modern city around the world >think China< and the impression is state side has stalled in time and somehow refused to reinvent itself. Perhaps it has always been like that caught up in it's past while the rest of the world has got on with it.
Agree with other comments this is not a ghetto and it sure looks cold ... with all those trees the street scape would look something entirely different in spring - autumn.
You don't see double parking or so near to pedestrian crossings here in Oz ... you's get booked but it's all abt available space I guess.
it is a lot nicer than downtown s. f and the Bay Area.
it really doesnt look that bad..ive seen worst areas my opinion in new york most def
Part 3 coming soon. You might think differently after that one. Thanks for watching
Nice place, really. Not like my f...... Russia.
Is Brooklyn AOC's district?
look like distantly somewhat the buildings in the netherlands where a live in resemblance across a ocean lays it such as the dutch city,s rotterdam amsterdam or the hague in some neighberhoods not to worst as in some american ghetto,s OR DIRTY WITH HOMELESS ADDICTS but i think this is not to worst neigherhood i guess, many dark greyish colored buildings with long dark windy wintermonths and nowhere greenery because it is winter and cold or rainy, exactly the same greyish world and the same interesting endless greyish boringness and monotone architecture like in many dutch-city,s,many people i guess thinking perhaps it is beautyfull or thinking nothing about it,i think it is all the same in many places with greyish places weather etc, with some minor differences if you ask me in color, in shapes, sizes, infrastructure and landscape and weather if new-york have a mild winter etc, between the netherlands and new-york it is comparable to some degree or level,if you ask me i think it is ugly like in my OWN country it is the same TO SOME EXTEND.kopenhagen-city in dennmark and neighering country ofthe netherlands for example-with cold long dark winters where every building is brightly colored in many different joyfull colors that is must different than ouer country,s.also like russia and ukraiene has many the same greyish uglyness and boringness in countless monotone buidings in endless dark weathering cold places.but it is interEsting to see AND DISCOVER THE SAME THINGS ARE EVERYWHERE.
It used to be part of New Amsterdam. That part of Brooklyn has many street with Dutch names from the old Dutch farmers who used to live there.
@@eddihaskell pardon me,i hope you can this translate it properly in english because my own language [that is dutch] is not native in english and this is a lenghty story to tell therefore i do it in my native-tongue-het klopt wat ik weet was het onderdeel van nieuw-amsterdam met kolonisten vooral boeren uit nederland onder andere.het is naar breukelen vernoemt wat brooklyn is geworden,ik geloof een dorpje genaamd breukelen in brabant een nederlands provincie in het zuiden v.h. land.harlem is vernoemt naar de stad haarlem in nederland een stad in de provincie noord-holland dichtbij amsterdam trouwens.dat verhaal v.d. kliniek dat vroeger in dat buurt lag wist niet maar nu weet ik het bedankt voorde info.gek genoeg was new-york vrij kort in handen van de nederlanders nadat ze het van indianen hadden veroverd in wezen en de kolonies nieuw-amsterdam haarlem en breukelen hadden gesticht.toch leuk dat er in amerika mensen weten over geschiedenis dat heel klein stukje nederland betreft.new-york is stuk langer in engelse handen geweest daarom is new-york new-york uiteraard inplaats nieuw-amsterdam en toch nederlanders een zekere impressie nagelaten.bedankt voor je reacties.leuk weetje voor jou misschien,is dat nederland ongeveer evengroot is als de hele landoppervlakte van de gehele stad new-york incluis al haar voorsteden,zo klein is nederland en nog iets leuks denk ik omteweten is onze woord baas werd geloof ik in jullie taal boss, want nederlanders stonden bekend als bazige bemoeiierige types die arrogant genoeg vonden dat ze van alles wat wisten en beter uiteraard alles het konden dan anderen.
This area used to be Dutch farmland.
For all the commenters saying it doesn't look bad....take my word for it, I cannot describe some things I've seen over there, I'd rather not talk about it

Nossa! Que lugar feio! Prefiro o meu Brasil.
@@94999-s Sua opinião. Cada um com a sua.
We should build walls around all urban areas of America.
No need to wonder why its dangerous place in NYC!!!
This ain't nothing. Come see Detroit. These people living here wouldn't last 10 mins in East Detroit....lol.
Oh FUCCIN please Nobody gives af about Detroit
And that's all you can brag about when it comes to Detroit. Detroit has no ups on other cities on anything else except it's trashier and deadlier which is nothing to be proud of.
😂 This why black people cant move foward. Look up East New Yorks recent crimes/murders before you type from your lonely home
Affa what do u mean, this is new York city it got the same kind of roughness and toughness Detroit got ok we're not slow don't judge a book by its cover new York is just as crazy we ain't thinking about Detroit new yorkers mind there beez wax until you mess with us so don't be no fool
