Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
This is the first time I've seen you with hair. I really feel like today is the first day of the rest of my life.
Whatup man! love your videos. Didnt expect to see you here.
why hello there!! :)
This is one of the albums of all time.

you know it took me like 5 months to realize that Madlib is also on the cover of this album he's in the background with the white hat which is cool cause it's like a subtle nod that he's the one behind the scenes pulling strings on this album..man I love this album
*mind blown*
Damn I didn't know that. That's awesome
holy shit didn't even realize that
***** interesting find
thanks....Ya i've listened to this album....Alot
Obviously Madlib is a legend and u gave him a lot of praise, i dont think you gave enough credit to freddie on the versatility of his flow and how he adapts to the beats, you listen to any of madlibs instrumentals and they are never the easiest beats to rap to but i think freddie just showed how he can adapt his delivery to anything and thats why i think gibbs is real special and got somethin not a lot of rappers got
Couldn't have said it better myself
Freddie Gibbs selected every beat himself
^since when does a rapper not select every beat he wants to rap on?
+ashmeetj I think he meant every song that made it to the album.
+ashmeetj which still doesn't make sense but eh
I actually loved Danny's flow and voice on High, I thought it added nice contrast to the smoothness but didn't abruptly ruin it, either. That might have been my favorite track on the album
i agree with you
Zach Zollo i agree
I agree, it's one of the best tracks on this album
Zach Zollo agreed. I loved Danny's verse on high. It honestly took the track to another level.
Danny's verse on this track is one of my favorites by him ever, which is saying something
album we need : madlib x earl sweatshirt
Mad Sweatshirt
nc MadShirt SweatLib
mad earl sweatlib
based of off deerskin by earl, this would be great
Earl x Knxwledge x Madlib production trio would be amazing.
LOL, it's so funny to see all these "real hip hop" rap nerds whining about Freddie Gibbs. MF Doom and Madvillian are great, but not every MC Madlib works with have to be this weird, abstract cartoonish persona that only alternative/underground rap fans have to appreciate. The beats are as great as the rapping.
spongeaang98 I thought Gibbs was respected among backbackers and underground heads.

Jack Hedeman I’d say it’s up there too. Just my opinion tho
Love all your reviews Anthony. You speak a lot sense and honesty, and aren't afraid to criticise when it's required.

Review: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Pinata Friddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata ALBUM REVIEW
Shyne Coldchain Vol 2 next please, would really like to hear your opinion on that one
100s ivry ep. reminiscent of too short, outkast and dj quik
You didn't feel Danny on High? Man, other than that, I think you were totally on point, I love this album, I think Shitsville has to be my favorite track, but that title is pretty meaningless on an album full of straight amazingness 10/10, I can't think of anything that would make this better.
aye man do the new Kool A.D. mixtape that dropped a couple days ago :)

A gentle reminder that this Freddie Gibbs / Madlib album rules: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata ALBUM REVIEW
no need, already listened to it a dozen of times and it still gets me everytime how awesome it is. Freddie Gibbs. Madlib. Forever ;)
I agree with everything you said, except UNO is actually excellent! 9.5!
You should review vince staples new tape - Shyne Coldchain Vol 2. lyrics are insane n beats are crazy
Freddie Gibbs is a very versatile MC. He shows that in every album he drops. He's a gangsta's lyricist. Meaning, you want that thug shit he'll give it to you. I enjoyed ESGN FULLY! After hearing Pinata it blew me away even more. All around I think Freddie Gibbs is going to be around for a very long time.
Review Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2
''Deeper'' is actually a metaphor for hiphop. Gibbs talked about it in an interview
nice.
which interview please?
***** shit i don't remember now. lol it's on youtube. I think it was with Noisey or vice.
with Gibbs it's not so much what hes saying that's dope, its the hunger and the pain in his voice that makes you believe what hes saying, and the way his voice sounds over madlibs scarred up grimey production makes this a beautiful piece of music
Amen 🙏🏻
This is my experience with the album:
1st 6 tracks: "Okay this is dope"
Mid-Album til track 12: "THIS IS AMAZING!!!!"
Last 5 tracks: "Well well well, this will probably go down as one of the best hip-hop album of 2014"
ShinbrigTV how about of all time..this album holds its own.
Of the decade for sure
For me it’s
First 8 tracks: THIS IS AMAZING!!!!
Tracks 9-17: very sick album but it fell off a little here
I knew as soon as I heard the instrumental to scarface, that I was in for an amazing experience
@@Yottifferent Good kid, MAAD Villain
Just imagine... Kendrick Lamar & Madlib
Hmm...sounds interesting. Can Kendrick's high pitched nasal way of rapping match up to Madlib's production? as you have seen, Gibbs and Doom could, bc their damn flows. I'd wait until Kendrick was a bit older. I didn't think Kendrick could make anything better than GKMC, but TPAB came out and I was pleasantly surprised. Now, can he top TPAB, or will he, like other legends, begin to make some less successful LPs? This idea would be a fantastic 4th album for Kendrick, I'm sure it'd be better than GKMC and Section.80
+MeImportaUnaGarompa it wouldnt work at all :P
+TheNerdyResponder u right Kendrick fits with his clean smooth crispy beats, but u never know he might pull it off
No more parties in La by Kanye. Produced by Madlib. Kdot went in, but his pitch was different.
+TheNerdyResponder I think Kendrick's next album is gonna be way more radio friendly like good kid mad city
8 years on, and this album still sounds as fuckin smooth and gangsta-ass and timeless as the day it came out. I really do think this album should be acknowledged as one of the greatest rap albums of all time.
100%
Absolutely
It is
He really undermined Gibbs here... and with hair like that? The nerve......
looking back at this review he never liked Gibbs, every review this guy has done since Shadow Of A Doubt he's been giving him a "meh" out of 10
This review was great! Now, if only Melon could get that piece of sample carpet off his head.
The switch up on Real is so FUCKING dope. Oh my god it is good. Sounds so gangsta
YES
Jesus Christ, I forgot how atrocious that hair was 😂
looooooooooove your reviews. Your respect for Madlib I can't help but appreciate because I always feel like Madlib is the most under-appreciated Hip Hop producer...who is ALWAYS busy and making hundreds upon hundreds of beats.
I thought Freddie Gibbs was ok...then I heard of "Freddie Gibbs & Madlib" and I all of a sudden loved Freddie Gibbs lol.
It’s pretty crazy how his perception of Freddie Gibbs completely changed after this album.
Everyone felt the same after this album. But damn, he works so well over Madlib's beats
I can’t even listen to Trap Freddie anymore, if he’s not on an Alchemist or Madlib, I almost can’t accept it. Call it shallow if you want.
@@LaughingGasFunny I can relate, those kind of beat are made for rapper like freddie gibbs, and freddie if not for my is one of the best rapper of this generation when it come to gangsta rap
@@LaughingGasFunny naw u right . He fits well with that shit

@@Huumf This album is so good and versatile I can't even pick a favorite track. Everything on it is great for a different reason.
AJ we must be alike i keep switching between those two lol
Uno has got to be my favorite. Second up I think is high, but uno transcends me every time
Even after that highly positive review I was waiting for the "I'm feeling a strong 6 on this record"
Freddie Gibbs can be so fucking thought provoking. I'm pretty much done with gangster rap so I just let that part of him slide and enjoy his dope lyricism. I listen to him like I listen to Big KRIT except Gibbs is Gangster cranked up to 11
KRIT and Gibbs are my current 2 favorite MCs. They take the genre to a different area, IMO
Gangsta rap is done with you too. Good riddance to all of u
Madlib needs to collaborate with Kendrick Lamar, it would be the record of the century.
idk, i'm not sure a sample based sound would mesh well w/ kendricks jazzy type hip hop (saxes/trumpets)
Idk man, it'd just be a dream come true. My favorite rapper and my favorite producer teaming up.
Madlib produced 'No more parties in LA' which was amazing and makes me want a Madlib x kendrick album collab so bad.
+Alex Patrick-Smith YES BRO! That song was the best track off TLOP, I need more of them!
+Mazin Omer wait wtf you know Madlib remixed the whole fucking Blue Note catalog, right?

Haircut is 8/10. Me and my dad love it.
my condolences for that haircut
Loved every second of this album. Definitely one of my favorite rap/hip-hop releases of the past several years. Madlib's production is fantastic. I love how you pointed out his production style has some psychedelic qualities to it. I felt the same way. Freddie Gibbs surprised the hell out of me. He flowed effortlessly throughout the whole thing, like he was tailor made for this album. He's legit.
y does anthony's hair look like that?
Why not
His hair, his call..even if it looks pretty silly to most of us.
I'm guessing he cut it or had someone else cut it. He prob likes it.
Barber: whatchu want fam?
Fantano: just throw the clippers at me
Madlib needs to collab earl sweatshirt
+Browngamer fuck can you imagine a whole album? i'd shit myself
+scrubthesam personally, I'd kill myself
Earl Sweatshirt it always hanging out with Knxwledge and they did that awesome Adult Swim single, it'd be cool to see a full length collab between them also.
Sober Hippy Earl was featured on this album yo
Jack a whole album not a song
Just wanted to throw an opinion out. This whole album is an absolute masterpiece. One of the best hardcore/drug/gangsta rap albums ever. But the real opinion is that I believe Thuggin is a gangsta rap magnum opus. I love all the songs on this album equally, but I feel that thuggin is the song that truly sums up the whole album and genius collaboration altogether. The three verses are all perfect. I feel like the verses ascend in urgency and importance. Again, this whole album is incredible. One of if not my favorite album of all time. But I just feel the essentiality of thuggin every time I hear it. I say damn every time it finishes 😂
I'm so glad you went bald jesus
Leave it to Madlib to take one of the most overused samples in Hip Hop history (High on your memory) and make something completely new and an absolute banger.
what type of drugs melon was on to use that hair smh
''You shed tears when you hurtin' if I cut you then you bleed riight..?'' This album merges two flagpoles in current existing hip hop. This is a breath of fucking old school fresh air, will keep my smiling all summer through, no doubt. Great review, a tad harsh on Freddie Gibbs, but I guess he ain't everyones cup of tea.
This whole album was great. The vibe I got was neighborhood BBQ and the inconspicuous cat telling you about his life while passing blunts and sippin beers. Very focused and illustrated.
This is why I subscribed to this channel in the first place! The passion when he reviews quality material is there, plus I'm not a music head whatsoever, much more of a gamer/film enthusiast/manga-comic book nerd. But everybody loves music. I just don't know what to listen to. Therefore I say thank you Anthony. I'm gonna go purchase this album next month.
There's only room for one turtle avatar
You end up getting that album?
lol
Madlib isnt strictly hip hop, he has a Rock Konducta album, Jazz albums etc
Danny browns guest verse was amazing
that fucking thumbnail tho
I give the thumbnail a strong 9
Fantano continues his gradual transformation into Alton Brown
Viraus2 facial wasting. jk
WTF Fantano gave this a 9? It's rare as fuck that he gives a project 9/10
Harold's is definitely my favourite instrumental on here, love that classic soul sound.
What a tune
For once, a well deserved GREAT review for an already incredible project. #respect
Danny Brown was my favorite feature on the album
dragoneye14 lol I agree he’s usually awesome but the worst one was def the song with Flatbush
Domo and earl are a 1-2 punch for me
Raekwon, Danny & Earl killed it
Danny Brown’s verse in High is fucking awesome. Idk what Melon is on about.
It’s incredible
I clicked on this video thinking that mad lib was gonna get the avg. 6/10.
I opened the description. I nearly fell out of my chair.
Knicks was the dopest beat on the album imo
+BlazedOutTurtle for me it was broken
uno
thuggin for me
Right now I'm really feeling Bomb
Loved all of em but uno for me was the best in terms of the instrumental
Lol he said he was on the fence with his previous album's "hooks were too trashy". Well those were mixtapes and most rap artist go harder on mixtapes but a when you drop album for retail stores you have to take it down a notch. I've been fan almost 5 years now, he can flow fast or slow, delivery is crazy and he's a story teller. What else can you ask for in artist especially a rap artist. I appreciate the full reviews you give, very informative👌....
"Saggin til Im 40, still lyrically shaper then these short bus shorties"
This haircut is powerful
So many years of reviewing rap-records without using the word "nigga".
do you really need to use that word to review anything?

I just think it's kinda funny. There were plenty songs in albums that had the title in the name. And you just didn't talk about the track at all. But I get it. I'd do the same thing

Bennycyl You seen his girlfriend before? Well that one at the time at least, not sure if they're still together.
Dude wtf were you doing with your hair
Who's watching this waiting for Anthony to review Bandana? 🤚
this is my favorite hip hop album of the year so far. Will be definitely hard to top.
All of TDE are dropping 6 albums/mixtapes/ep's total this year, we'll see by then
LifeTechni800 well after 3, even though i really like Isaiah Rashad's album, have not been as good as this.
Joesizzle777 It's Kendrick, Ab Soul, and Jay Rock next tho, and all of Black Hippy, so we'll see
Yeah exactly. As of late, im expecting big things from Jay Rock, but Kendrick and Soul will kill it as usual.
Don't forget Lupe's album. It's either gonna be a flop or hit depending if he wants it to be like his first 2, or his last 2. Let's hope it's like his first 2
Absolutely adore the sound of this album. Finally getting a vinyl copy of it!
Just ordered mine couple days ago... Pinata will be a future classic without a doubt... It's one of these albums that you just spin that wheel and let the shit play out from start to finish !!!
***** Sadly the copy I got ended up being a horrible print. Thing skips and pops regularly. Woohoo.
I partially agree, but saying you wish there were time stamps to know when the jump scares were doesn’t constitute for a review
its dope that he gives out so many 6's and 7's so when he gives a high score it really shows how that project differs from the pack, like for example pitchfork gave oxymoron an 8.3, gave this an 8....foh. The two albums are leagues apart.
***** you right, still way too close to be credible to me.
Mooky Yeah I agree. I like Q, and I like that album, but it's a 6 if you're being honest with yourself. Reused topics, no real original themes or concepts, he's shown no advancement lyrically really. I'd put Setbacks over it easily.
This is why I like (your) album reviews, the internet did not kill it at all. Going to check this lp out asap.
What i noticed about this review is that he talks more about Madlib's production more than Freddie Gibbs lyrics. Do anyone on here noticed that?
my life will be complete when a madlib x earl album drops
Nice cut
Am I the only one that gets a HUGE 90's wutang-ish vibe from this whole LP? I feel like I'm literally in the 90's listening to it.
Kappa Cow No to the Wu-Tang yes to the 90's. I don't know if it's that it sounds like the 90's as much as just doesn't sound like any of the stuff that's been coming out since 2010 or even earlier.
Yeah it’s definitely inspired by Cuban links and even more so Ironman.
Every few months I click on this video just to read the hair comments 😂😂😂

Damnit someone throw away the melon, it got left in the sun and started sprouting little hairs 😒
When I first hear Freddie Gibbs I didn't think he had anything special on him, I actually thought he was just like any average rapper making Trap music until I hear this album. WOW! From beginning to end I love this album. I didn't think that a great album was going to come out in a while since Good Kid M.A.A.D City. Gibbs has a really good flow, intricate lyrics and a special way of telling a story. Madlib did his job producing amazing smooth and soulful beats full of samples and interludes. INSTANT CLASSIC.
