Madvillainy’s Secret Ingredient: INDIFFERENCE

- How is it that an MC who "doesn't listen to hip hop" and a producer who was BORED with hip hop ended up making one of the best hip hop albums of all time?
RIP to the Supervillain

You can tell that this guy really loves this album, it's like when your friend shows you their favorite album 😂
If my friend explained it this way, I'd be rolling up weekly to hear him lmao
Bro this be how I explain Radiohead to my friends
Well he picked a good joint tho!!!!
One of the coolest things about accordion to me is how Madlib used the clicks in the original sample to serve as hi-hats. It’s such a small detail but adds a lot character to the song.
I did not notice that thank you for pointing it out I can listen to DOOM for years and keep learning
I didn't notice that dope af
I have a weird thing for samples that sound like music boxes and accordion fits perfectly into my odd little niché
I think it's more of a coincidence the way he chopped it up
And they add to the time motif in the lyrics, it’s brilliant
i first heard this in 2005 and really liked it, but kinda took it for granted; not realizing how much of a landmark album it really was, how ahead of its time it was, and how legendary it would become. it's so densely packed with musical ideas, one of those you can hear something you never noticed before on each listen.
thanks for doing a deep dive into this, can't think of an a hip hop album that deserves this kind of expert breakdown more.
It gets better with every single listen
Same. I think I took him seriously until Danger DOOM. Lol.
@tecpaocelotl danger DOOM is a good album but that's a weird one to finally take him seriously
DangerDOOM was the main one for me that got me really into DOOM initially@@christianterrill3503
@@christianterrill3503he said that’s when he stopped taking him seriously lol
In my opinion madvillainy is one of the most important albums in hip hop history
in music history period.
Hot take
@@wariusgaiusnot at all
I don't agree with this but is an absolutely fantastic album that gets massively slept on.
You are cultured sir
this guy never makes a bad video
🙏🙏
yea
Outstanding. The way you tied this whole story together at the end by saying "The music coming out is hip hop, but the music going IN could be absolutely anything." I feel this quote alone could help many people who have a strong hatred towards hip hop have a chance to understand that, it's more than what just lingers on the surface; it's when you deep dive into these tracks when shit gets real and you realize how dense this art form truly is!
Just wanna add 19:46 DOOM is actually making you believe he means the track is butter but in actuality he is referencing the beat as HOT as he quotes in the next line Jeopardy game show style: “what is Jalapeños”
Right! Too many layers 🤯 the problem is where to draw the lines for this video haha so many different layers on everything - not to mention this isn't the first time he's done a jeopardy line
Love this content a whole lot. Thank you. 🙏🏽
Fun fact: The sample on Accordion isn't actually an Accordion, It's some kind of keyboard/organ. Hence the clicking sounds in the background of the keys being pressed
It sounds like a Melodica/Pump Organ
Just here to say fuck Egon for holding onto DOOMS belongings after he passed and not giving them to his family.
Hearing DOOM take that deep breath during the beginning of "Figaro" still gives me chills
My question is how the hell did they get all this shit cleared 😭
Doubt they did
dont need to if its transformative
You can get away with a lot if your careful about what you choose to use
Likely didn’t. A lot of it is smaller stuff; and Doom’s albums would get yanked frequently for copywriter infringement. (Both “Operation: Doomsday” and its follow-up, “Mmm… Food” (a brilliant title, by the way, as it’s a album about food based on Doom’s own name) come to mind. (I believe “Mmm… Food sampled one of the last bands you ever want to try to sample: the Beatles.”)
If I understood the channel announcement correctly, all ad revenue from the video goes straight to the label instead of DTG.
I bought nicer headphones in 2005 just because of this album. It was the best thing I'd heard since danger doom. Thx for the amazing videos!
Similar. We got a nicer record player after I played Madlib's Shades of Blue on vinyl for my husband. I couldn't abide that album not sounding right!
R.I.P MF DOOM, this album is just something else. Madlib amazing production always blows my mind and DOOM's rhymes are like a musical instrument itself. One of my favorite rap albums of all time.
This is one of my favourite ever records, it's absolutely flawless, madlib & MF DOOM just seem to be a perfect match. Thanks so much for all your time, knowledge and insight.
A small super thanks for all videos and of course for TWO MF DOOM videos so close together
Thank you so much for the support 🙏
@@diggingthegreats you have given me hours of entertainment, it feels wrong not giving anything back. Have a good weekend!
You do a good job Dig Man
God the way madlib perfectly sets the mood for every Doom verse on every track on this album always blows my mind when I put this record on.
Nothing feels out of place... Just a perfect combination.
Madlib is a genius. He’s done this on every collab he’s done with an artist
Easily the best CZcams music channel. Thank you for the work you put in.
🙏🙏
+1 Thank you so much!!!@@diggingthegreats
I bought this album shortly after it was released and the 1st time I listened to it was when my best friend picked me up to go on a road trip to where I was getting married. (he was my best man) Driving out to that location to meet up with my wife of almost 20 years is oddly what I ALWAYS think of when hearing "Madvilliany." That album really was like the perfect soundtrack for our little road trip... this blunted out rap album playing as we cracked jokes. It was the swan song to our relationship as a new chapter was about to unfold in my life.
The craziest thing about the accordion sample it isn't an accordion
This literally has me tearing up. It’s a masterpiece and your breakdown of the album is more of a homage. Thank you.
As someone who grew up playing orchestral instruments and listening to 90s Hip Hop, I never had a problem with what he said in the interview. His production and wordplay show his dedication to the craft, but that doesn't mean he has to like what the genre is doing.
It also isn't unique. Several artists have stated that they don't listen to the genre they play and, oddly enough, this often comes up when an interviewer try to get a rock star or whatnot to talk bad about rap music yet suddenly learn that they love it and listen to it all the time over the genre they're actually in 😂
Some musicians like to live the music 24/7 and others like more of a blank slate approach.
Digging the greats is carrying CZcams right now. Seeing such an in depth appreciation for the music I love is a treat. Keep it up
Would love to see an episode on OB4CL, 93 til infinity, or Piñata!
🙏🙏🙏
Piñata breakdown would be dope
PIÑATA 🦓!!!!
Take me to your leader, doomsday, the unseen, donuts please !!!
@@magnetik297 he’s actually already done doomsday. Donuts would be cool.
This album is so great I’m thinking about trying to collect all the records used for it. Currently working on doing this for Donuts and it is quite the task. These dude had insane ears for samples
Jesus good luck on that bro! Seriously! Don't go broke collecting but cool idea
@@JulianWyllie for sure! I’m about 10 records in for Donuts. Most expensive so far was the Smokey Robinson record, since I got an original
Say, man, that's a cool endeavor. I really like that.
you should try the same for DJ Shadow or The Avlanches 😭
@@astrolink7144 collecting all the records sampled by the avalanches would send your bank account to the dark ages
I hope to see more videos about madlib’s production as time goes on as this was fantastic. I hope to see a video in the future about Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s “Piñata”.
RIP DOOM
It's amazing how well this album has aged. It still sounds as fresh as it did back in 2004. I still find myself quoting lines from Accordion, Meatgrinder, Curls, and All Caps to this day
Another great video, "Madvillainy" is truly one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made! I just wish you'd also mentioned instrumental cuts like "Sickfit" and "Supervillain Theme", as well as the song "Eye" where only Stacy Epps can be heard singing and which I always found extremely interesting in the context of the album. Like, it's an R&B cut that shouldn't really work here, yet it somehow makes this album complete, if that makes any sense. Love your channel!
Such sophisticated storytelling techniques [chef’s kiss]. Introducing Madlib’s ambivalence to Hip-Hop and leaving that thread open as you Segway back to the album. Gripping stuff!
Also appreciate this video because I never got into MF Doom like many hip hop heads around me. This helps me finally understand why he is so exalted.
My favourite part of this album is going and listening to other music, seeing subtle traces of inspiration that has been taken from this album, then coming back, only to listen to the album that does it better than every one of them. Madvillainy is def top 5 Rap Albums, barely anything I know beats the level of artistry and sampling. RIP DOOM
I've always loved DOOM but your videos on him have given me a newfound appreciation. He's like the James Joyce of hiphop and the analysis you provide is legit scholarship
Well put! 😂👌
Found this album from Meat Grinder, and ill be honest, it was a challenging first listen. But then i listened for a second time in a different frame of mind and it just worked, and gets better and better with each listen. This masterpiece is what got me into hiphop, and now im listening to legends like Nas and Pete Rock & CL Smooth (would be cool to see a breakdown on their album 'The Main Ingredient').
I started listening to DOOM in 2002-03, and i enjoyed most of it, but it's not until recent years that I've begun to really appreciate everything. Listening with more mature ears and a wiser mind, it's like discovering DOOM all over again.
Yooooo! That All Caps flip is one of the best in hip hop ever... Always been a fan of KMD and I remember hearing this album 1st before the solos and purchasing it on Itunes for my Ipod... Bought it because of Madlib and the Cover Art. Recognized who the voice was instantly. I took a break from listening to hip hop for a couple of years because I felt like early 2000's wasn't the greatest. This album reinvigorated that love.. Went back and copped all the solos right after...
As someone who just started to dive into hiphop less than a year ago, it didnt't took me long to have my mind blown by how legendary is this album. Analysis like this one are VERY helpful to understand and appreciate it better.
Thank you for all your hard work and getting this video back out. I've been waiting impatiently since I saw your post about it getting taken down. 😄
This one is brand new! The one that got taken down was Operation Doomsday, which is back up here: czcams.com/video/zsfznaHTok0/video.html
@diggingthegreats even better! I'll take all the deep dives of MF DOOM I can get. Amazing stuff as alway 🔥
It's so inspiring to find on CZcams, which is ruled by "take" and "reaction" videos (which are fun, too!) to get some real music criticism: Knowledgeable, passionate, and powerful. I've listened to Madvillany a hundred times, but I will hear more the next time than I ever have. I think all anyone wants - and especially artists - is to be truly seen. That's what the mask always meant for me - like him saying "my face is unchanging, you'll have to look deeper to see what's really happening here", and you help get closer to that. Fantastic as always. Almost anyone who listens to that album can sense the genius behind it, but without it being pointed out it can slip into just "genre", and not seen as the art it really is. Thanks as always.
Champion sound is such an underrated album. So many bangers on that album.
Ahhhh, you've done it again. Such high respect for the culture and for these great works of art. Embracing the technical genius while never losing the humanity behind the craft. Salute!
I love this album soo much. Every time i listen i catch something new. Easily one of the most influential albums, just 2 creative minds in Madlib & MF DOOM coming together and creating a whole different lane for future artists.
This album is so influential to alternative hiphop. Listening to JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown's album SCARING THE HOES reminded me a lot of this one.
Mf doom and Aesop rock are two rappers I love but also two rappers I've never tried to understand the lyrics. I just like listening to them rhyme, especially madvilliany. Ver cool to see not only the info on the beats themselves but also a small break down on the rhymes
When you treat your art like work. You're able to remove your emotions out of it. Make something dope and not be married to it. Youlll go "oh that went viral thats cool" and continue to work
kinda crazy because you would think the best result would come from doing the opposite. Being really emotionally invested in what you do. It makes you really appreciate how all of us are different people at the end of the day
I ain't gonna lie, this might be one of, if not straight up your best video yet and it's on the biggest supervillain to ever walk the earth. Thanks, for this video and RIP DOOM.
One of my all-time favorite hip-hop albums. This is the kind of album that brings up memories about where you were when you were listening to it. Absolutely love it.
No frills. Lyrical, instrumental, and conceptual perfection. Thank you for giving DOOM and ‘Lib the props they deserve with and incredible research and clear respect to the world of hip hop 🙏🏻
Keep inspiring us with your incredible analysis, love, and effort. So appreciated.
Thank you 🙏 very grateful to get to do this, share it, and connect with people like you
@@diggingthegreatsthank you for this video so much ❤
I really appreciate you doing this... I have this album on vinyl and I'll never look at it the same again. I had a real trouble explaining the genius of it to my children. And now you did that for me.
Glad this is back up
we need a breakdown of Quasimoto's "The Further Adventures of Lord Quas" in my opinion, no album uses sampling more in depth and creatively than madlib's 2005 psychedelic masterpiece
Man this breakdown was something special. Gave my a much deeper appreciation for the work that went in to culminate in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip hop records EVER
Another great episode of DTG! One of my favorite things about the Rhinestone Cowboy track is, when he reaches the end and the crowd cheers, DOOM's not satisfied that he didn't stick the landing with that last rhyme quite right. He lays down a few more bars to reach the conclusion more organically.
i like this video, i am a brazilian boy, and its really hard find videos speaking about madvillainy's in portuguese, when I listened to this album for the first time I heard a song or two and I thought two were good, but when I found out that he used brazilian songs, and stayed here to discover samples, i heard the full album and It's so unique I can't describe it, the way the album gives you the feeling that mf doom is a villain and can you think of him as a super villain in his secret lair it's just incredible, thanks mf doom and madlib for this magic album
Two of my favorite albums two weeks apart!
Edit: Madvilliany and Late Registration
I gotchu 🫵
This video was almost a half hour and I AM HERE FOR IT
More like this please
the fact that Madlib played some instruments on the album too is sick. And DOOM's interludes fit so well. Desert island album.
You’re videos always make me go back to these records and just get lost in them and fall in love with them all over again!! Thank u! Your work for these videos is nothing short of perfection!!!
Side story about this album on a personal note: first of all, this album was on HEAVY HEAVY rotation when it came out!
But when they announced this tour coming up to Toronto, me and all my crew and cousins all bought our tix with no hesitation! A tour with Madlib AND doom?? YES PLEASE!! Then they had a last minute addition. The concert ended up being a Madlib solo performance, Doom solo performance, a madvillain performance of the album, and, the last minute addition performance: dilla. Dilla did a solo/ Slum Village performance, then him and Madlib did a Jaylib performance. It ended with Madlib hopping on the drum set and just straight ripping the drums while people were heading out the door. If only they knew what was happening!!
Anyway, needless to say, it’s the best concert i’ve been to. To catch all 3 legends on a single stage flipped my wig and blew my brain!
So this video just brought me back to that time and era in Toronto when this new wave of hip hop was emerging.
Thank u for bringing that feeling back man!
Nuff respects and props! 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
I would love to see you discuss the genius of DJ Screw. There’s a lot of layers to his style to digest
I'm so glad this is back up. One of your best videos. Keep it up my soul brother
Man, the love and hard work that's gone into making this video. Incredible stuff!
Best channel on CZcams. Thank you for your very well-planned videos that are not only entertaining, but extremely insightful. I learn something new each time.
I was surprised you didn’t comment on the sample to Frank Zappa’s “Sleeping in a Jar” at the beginning of meat grinder… one of my favorite on this project
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO! This is genuinely my favorite album ever, and I can't wait to watch this video. The lyricism in completely unmatched, the production is complex and layered and absolutely incredible, and almost every song is just perfect. It is the perfect hip-hop album to me, incredible.
Appreciate this deep dive @DiggingTheGreats🤘🏽
Any chance for more Gang Starr in the future? Thanks for this episode, getting right to it. Cheers.
No fluff, let's get into it. Definitely more Gang Starr on the list - just the list is getting long!
This video is a masterpiece. Excellent work! 🙏🏾
Just wanna say this is SUCH a good video. the production quality and your analysis, i'm totally geeking over your whole channel!! please keep it up 💙💜
You, yourself are a great writer. thank you for putting all these videos together especially in such diligent ways
Wow, this is one of the best music review videos I've ever seen. It strikes the perfect balance-not overly detailed to be boring and dull, yet interesting and dynamic enough to keep me glued to the screen non-stop. This is truly amazing content. Thank you!
Incredible video, thank you for the love and time you put in!!❤
One of your best episodes. You got to the core of why I love and live by the elements of hip hop.
Found this record right when it came out, after seeing the hype on internet message boards, and after hearing “Curls” on a hip hop radio show. “Walk Like A Man” by Murs & 9th came right after, I went and got that album too. Then I started to get the other ones, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, etc
Wow, one of my favorite albums of all time for sure. Also kind of on time for the death day of the supervillain to honor him 🙏. So important for the evolution of hip hop. Kinda shows how Madlib completely elevated and evolved the meaning of sampling in the genre.
As always amazing quality in both content, and research. Also the production.. I wish back in the days watching MTV we had content like you do. We are really blessed to have guys like you keeping these legends unforgotten by spreading the word. Looking forward to the next video
And if you're already at god tier albums, please do Cold Vein and Funcrusher Plus. Thank you for all your brilliant work!
I went to get this album on CD after I got hip to Yesterday’s New Quintet and other Madlib works. It changed my view in music as a young jazz student in college. That CD lived in my car for the better part of six months. Thank you for bringing back some seriously great memories. I LOVE your content and hope that one day I (a jazz keys prof and freelancer) can make music like this a more formal part of my career. 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️
Finally checked out this video after seeing it in my recommended for so long. WOW! Incredible editing, writing and narration. Gonna go watch more now :)
When I think of Madvillainy I think of those cold nights walking home from school in multiple feet of snow, with only the warm beats and fire rhymes of DOOM and Madlib to keep me warm. I remember fervently arguing with my cousin about how MF DOOM was a better rapper than Lil Wayne, and at the time everyone thought i was absolutely insane, but I knew what I was listening to was way ahead of its time. Life came full circle when I was teaching Music Production with TCP and Northeastern University and one of my students cited MF Doom as the creators of one of their favorite songs. I responded: what do yall know about MF DOOM? to my surprise 4 our of 5 students exclaimed their love for DOOM, not one of them over the age of 17. I could've cried right there. Needless to say, I showed up to work in a DOOM shirt the next day. Madvillainy is an instant and true classic.
PS. I've played them some of your videos and they LOVE them!
Peace!

Just hopped on this channel and I´m amazed by the quality of everything!! congrats
Amazing video as usual. Love the enthusiasm! And the balance between factual information and your own opinions is perfect. Amazing stuff🔥🔥🔥
I stumbled upon this channel after listening to DJ Premiers channel auto switching to a new video. I’m so glad I found it. Excellent work!
I been listening to Hip Hop since the late 80s as a kid, i stopped buying albums in the late 90s... and started pirating music in the early 2000's heavily. The one and only Hip Hop album i actually purchased since the 90s was Madvillainy and at the time I was posting on online forums and I'd share with other posters about how this album is so good I actually bought it and its going to be a goat album. I was made fun of heavily back then... fast forward 20? years and now everyone thinks Doom is a legend and this album is a goat album.
Too Long Didnt Read : if you love something dont listen to people who dont understand.
Great Video! I loved it
Amazing video my brother!!
You broke this down to where anyone can understand the genius of it, and that a hard thing to do because explaining what makes this album great to the average listener is a hard sell but you did it perfect and wrapped it up beautifully with a nice bow on top.
I tip my hat to you bro.
We’ll done sir, we’ll done.
🔥💪🏽👑💯‼️
Finally, been asking and waiting for this video for a LONG time. Sad that I missed it when uploaded but great work
This channel is a goldmine. Thank you for your hard work fr
The more in depth you go, the better your videos get. Dope as usual!
Amazing content man, loved the larger format, keep it up!
Greetings from a Brazil 🇧🇷
Great video as always. This album is a true masterpiece. I’m so glad you focused some on ALL CAPS. That song is a microcosm of Madlib’s production style and DOOM’s rhyme style. Hip hop at its finest by 2 of the best to ever bless us with their music.
All I know I was in NY after Katrina and I copped this and rode the train and had an amazing time listening to this album. One of the best hip hop albums in my opinion
Thank you for explaining the intricate work of Madlib and DOOM so anyone can understand it. Absolutely love this video. You're great
This the best channel on CZcams!
You do a phenomenal job and I’m happy to see you’re numbers keep climbing.
You’re videos always inspire me to get back to production, and the timing of your videos is convenient man. I love how you explain each goated album’s back story and the thought process behind the creators, it feels… human.
Love your work, man . Great story telling and great edits
Love your videos bro. You put so much work in them and it truly shows. Thank you 🙏🏾
To me, as someone who likes some hiphop but is not a massive fan of the genre, Madvillainy contains everything I love about hip hop and nothing of what I don't like about it. Which may be because of that indifference towards the genre that you mentioned.
It sounds like they were not trying to make a typical hip hop album, but more a great album in general, that happens to fall into the hip hop category.
love the format of these video, just subbed, youre awesome dude
This video is so well put together man good stuff fr
You perfectly summed up and pin pointed exactly why I love Hip Hop production - thank you, as always dood
Thank you for the content only all time 2 favorite. Love the content man. Proud of your come up!
Bro this is an amazing breakdown. Thank you so much for this video
Glad to see this back up here. Great deep dive on the album and the story of the collaboration.
Yooooooooo! Been waiting fof this one! Knew it was coming, I felt it. Thanks for the dope content, fun to watch and as always engaging 👌🏽💯
