    We love Robert, he is irreplaceable, irrepressable and a treasure, but, Imogen - you are a better interviewer - we hear much more from the guests. Keep 'em coming.

      Yes but to be fair Robert is an actor (and really nailed Kryton) but he hasn't had the training.
      I have (local radio) and you either can or you can't.
      Imogen is a chatterbox and is more than aware of the gender thing.
      Her problem lies in that she's not qualified in battery EV engineering,
      or, say, the technology related to storage radiators ...

    I'm one of two people in Australia who bought a V2G charger outside of government trials, and the only person in Australia to regularly export to the grid from a car.
    The software for automating V2G is still being created, so I've had to write my own V2G automation instead. I've made myself an expert in EV's, V2G, and home energy systems; partly from curiosity, and partly out of necessity.
    I'd be happy to share my experiences and opinions if they're wanted.

      Something I have posted elsewhere.
      Put in the GRID EXPANSION COSTS and do the FULL LCOE and forget all the other bs analysts.
      Big mouths ignore the real world.
      We will always have petroleum and its derived products.
      A little fossil fuel in emergency in the middle of a bad winter moment is NOTHING.
      Grow up.
      Horse meat was cheap when the Ford model T production started.
      20years T model production.
      20years to replace all vehicles with EVs.
      Best use of todays vehicles with the embedded CO2 is to use them.

      Building the new electric market will take time.
      Take Australia example, 20million buildings and vehicles.
      In 20years 20million rooftop PV 6.6kW and EVs with big long distant batteries.
      All mobile batteries, EVs and robotic vacuum cleaners, will selfplug-in to the grid while they are waiting for their daily moment of mobility.
      Most vehicles are parked 23hrs every day.
      I feel like I am talking to 👶 baby.
      The entire auto manufacturers industry know this.
      Ford jumped straight into V2G.
      Nissan electric vehicles had V2G by Japanese government law. The emergency back up for homes.
      Elon Musk knows, homes charging, rooftop does not have to be big if every building has rooftop.
      Tesla have long distant batteries and newer batteries in development.
      Just my thoughts.

    A wonderful chat and it was great to see Roger on the Podcast having seen him last year in the big cowboy hat at Fully Charged Harrogate. I do believe as things are, relying on the Governments to move us on to a greener agenda, will take a very long time. Business has seen the benefits of going green and are investing in this area. Business will propel us forward, despite what happens in any Government.

    You are correct about the lack of government leadership and vision - I can’t even get a smart meter, no WAN, where I live in Epsom. We get all these adverts saying how we can save, yet the equipment that runs the meters is based on 2/3G technology because the network not been upgraded yet! That means I can’t get better supply/charging rates, prevents me from battery/solar and re supplying the grid? Still maybe I’ll get some answers at everything electric?

    Gavin Shoebridge delivered bidirectional ev's to customers without electricity in cyclone Gabrielle. That point that this is a possibility is not known by mainstream.

    Mobility Lab - Lack of wheelchair accessible vehicle (Electric WAVs) and where they are available they are outside the purse of many disabled people! Just a thought to take with you to Geneva!

    A great, interesting and even uplifting podcast, thanks. You touched on British politics and I think you have a point that our politicians don't seem able to take advantage of opportunities the way other nations do. I wonder if most of our politicians are just too short sighted and don't see long term benefits. Surely future elections would be easier for their party if they could say, 'look what our party did eight, twelve, sixteen years ago that we are still benefitting from now!'? Maybe they are not well enough advised, or are easily led by powerful but selfish and greedy lobbyists? There is certainly much evidence to support this notion. So as not to finish on a gloomy note, there are some great examples of how we are doing things better than some others, our national grid seems to be the best in the world and we are doing well in wind turbine technology.

    To the point about fossil fuels funding the transition.
    Genesis Energy is a coal, gas, hydro and wind generator. They are switching the one coal plant to biofuel and using gas to fund solar and wind. The ceo wants electricity use to speed up, more ev's more electric heating and cooking. Ref rnz interview 4th Dec 2023 with Kathryn Ryan.

    Lithium batteries for small devices.
    Sodium batteries for bigger tasks.

      And hydrogen, fuel cell or ICE, for the main stuff such as all transport.
      And industry.
      And domestic.
      Perhaps the possibly lacklustre support for battery technology by HMG, as reported on this episode, is indicative of a waning interest in light of the growing presence of hydrogen as a fuel.
      The recent London bus fires (three in two weeks lest you forget) must have been a bit of a "shock" (groan) to the departments who monitor such events in the public domain.
      Who knows what happens in privately funded circles?
      I don't suppose those events (and others being reported worldwide, Google is your friend ref Viviez in France) does a lot to inspire confidence in lithium ion technology.
      It may be that the efforts by manufacturers to decrease charging times, especially in very cold subzero temperatures, is a double edged sword?
      As in yes very rapid charging is possible but the batteries object to the "abuse" and catch fire long before this mythical ten or twenty year life expires.
      Too soon to comment on how sodium based batteries, etc will behave but the people with the money might decide investment in battery tech is not that prudent after all.
      If pension funds avoid the risk then that might be a hint "we" should too.
      There again, for balance, said pension funds might avoid investing in hydrogen technology too.

      Realistically,
      Lithium for transport, Sodium for storage.
      The Sodium gravimetric/ volumetric density + temperature equation doesn't work for vehicles.
      .
      (And before you say it.... Even trucks/ public transport)

      Industry will be re-evaluating lithium batteries following the recent fires to the three London bases.
      Sodium batteries in homes (say) might get a tad warm.
      Which leaves only hydrogen as a fuel.
      Fancy that.

    Can you guys do a video on metal hydride hydrogen storage?, seems like could be good for applications where batteries are not yet dense enough for all applications such as aircraft

      @@rogerstarkey5390 can do, all you need is electricity and water, new capillary electrolysis can get 90-95% efficiency. Fuel cells obvs less efficient than batteries but battery energy density still way too low for medium or long distance aircraft. Could also be used for big long distance ships aswell

    p.s. On the contrary, we MUST demonise fossil fuel usage, just like we have demonised smoking. That is the only way we can make shareholders divest their fossil fuel interests or insist that the oil companies switch track. It is not ok to say that the people working at those companies are probably very nice and that they might come up with a solution by themselves.
    Anybody who suggests that to carry on tolerating fossil fuel companies has simply no idea how bad climate change is.

      ​@dominicgoodwin1147 I wouldn't advocate for demonizing anyone. You're missing the point. Demonizing people you think to be evil just reduces yourself to their level.
      You also need to remember that the fossil fuel industry is still providing the ONLY viable energy source to the majority of the countries on earth, and it will be a long time before wind, solar, battery, hydro, or any other alternative energy sources, or EVs, will be available to billions of people. Yes. It's time to transition. There is no possible way for everyone to do so yet. Far too many people the world over can't even rely on the grid now. The fossil fuel industry is still necessary. It's not evil for meeting those needs.

    It's not democracy that's the problem; it's UK democracy with its First-Past-The-Post system. If we had a Proportional Representation system, then there would be MPs representing LibDems and Greens and the leading coalition would need to listen to them. They would have to start agreeing on what they have in common, instead of cutting each other down on what they differ on.

    During the 2nd half of the 2nd world war. 70+ thousand Polish women and children walked out of Siberia all the way to Cape town! Less than 30,000 of them made it.
    I have been saying for years we need to get on top of climate change or we csn have 100's of millions walking from Africa directly into Europe!

    Offgrid in the suburbs is the greatest fear.
    13kW rooftop solar PV and EV big batteries, V2G parked 23hrs every day.
    The grid owners are scared because 66% of electricity bills is the fixed grid costs.
    Offgrid owners driving to offgrid work places means GRID REMAINDERS will be hit with massive electricity bills.
    Big batteries are free with the EVs.

      Since its purpose is to be "a car"....
      (Especially an Autonomous car, moving, not parked)

      An autonomous car does the moving job of many other cars.
      Less vehicles are needed.
      But my point about the cost of grid expansion is also very real.
      My point about nuclear for the world to stop worldwide CO2 emissions is very real as well.
      Nuclear industry proliferation is still a real danger.

      My repost is:
      We have Australian nuclear promoters wanting Australia to go 'clean' nuclear electricity and ignore that the world CO2 emissions is Australia's problem.
      Ontop of Australia getting nuclear submarines, 'because the world is becoming more peaceful '.
      Ontop of USA leaving NATO and European countries developing their own nuclear weapons.
      One gigawatt nuclear electricity generator plant can make enough weapons material in one year.
      Australia will lose its trading partners and its overseas suppliers of manufactured goods, including steel and white goods and vehicles and its buyers of food crops and .....

    As a big fan of this channel, I was very disappointed with this interview. The conversation was all sizzle and no steak. Other than promoting various events and dropping many names, there was no substance to the interview. No real information was shared. I was expecting some discussion of new battery technology or other new developments in EV's or solar or storage, but sadly nothing was offered.
