  • This week Robert is joined by an old friend of the show, Jonathan Porterfiled, who is based in the glorious Orkney Isles in Scotland, where since 2013 over 100% of the power has come from renewables.
    Jonathan shares with us details of the great developments taking place there, as well as how he’s on a personal mission to get as many of his fellow islanders driving EVs as he possibly can.

    Good to see and hear Jonathan again, I soaked up lots of his videos prior to buying my Leaf in 2019 and he gave me the knowledge I needed to get a great deal. Four and a half years later the Leaf has recouped its purchase price in fuel savings alone (compared the Honda it replaced) and now it's sitting outside my house plugged into a V2H charger running my house on off-peak electric and soaking up my excess solar. My old 2014 Leaf is the gift that keeps on giving!

    Jonathan and Christina at eco cars got me a good value MG 5 last February. The biggest lesson I have learned from an EV is to buy higher quality screen wash as there is no waste heat under the bonnet to keep the screen wash free of ice! Charging at home is the equivalent of a magic fairy from BP putting full jerry cans on the drive every night and only expecting pence for the privilege. A big thank you to Robert and Jonathan for giving me the information to make the right EV selection for my budget.

    Always enjoy seeing you two chatting, I would like to confirm being of similar vintage that it's not just men who's bladder range deteriorates with age! I've taken to drinking two litres of water a day, as directed by a doctor, along with my usual couple of pots of tea (now green, less caffeine) and believe it or not I wee less often but more efficiently if you know what I mean.😂 Just time it right when you drink it, I have one litre after me midday dinner and one after me tea, get me last wee in before I go to sleep and last the night through. As JP said, its a consequence of a bit-part system, with multiple private companies being responsible for different parts of the whole end-to-end system.

  • @grahamleiper1538

    The easiest way to get people to use more green electricity is to drop the price.
    Orkney pays same as everywhere else because rest of UK uses gas so that's how the electricity is priced.
    Electricity needs to be devolved. It's all politics.
    Most of the time the whole of Scotland isn't using gas for electricity but we pay as if we are. We should be surrounded with data centres and aluminium smelters but instead it's pylons to take the power South.

    It's just occurred to me listening to Jonathan talk about how traditionally the price of a car drops precipitously after 100K miles because of public perception (and indeed memory of old ICE cars dying at that mileage). It occurs to me now that in the future, we will turn over our cars less often because of this. I mean, when you have a car and it's getting to the point where you are paying more to maintain it than you feel it's worth, you trade it in on something new (or at least something less old). But if EVs don't degrade in their value at 100K, when would we trade them on something new? So all that carbon and other pollution from the manufacture of vehicles will eventually drop as well because people won't need new cars as often. Sure, people who get a new car every year because they just have to have a new car will still be a burden. But normal people who keep a car as long as its useful will buy fewer cars in their lifetimes and car manufacturers will make fewer as well. = lower emission from manufacturing!

      It doesn't matter how long the first owner keeps the car, what matters is when the last owner gets a repair bill larger than the cost of a replacement car. If the first owner hangs onto a car for longer, there will be fewer second hand cars for the rest of us.
      It's possible that old EVs will be much more reliable, but somehow I expect old Jaguars, BMWs and Audis will still find a way to be expensive to run!

    • @spankeyfish
      @spankeyfish Před 6 měsíci +1

      Regardless of how fast the battery degrades, the car will still rust out from under you in the UK, unless it's all made of stainless.

    • @Nikoo033
      @Nikoo033 Před 6 měsíci +2

      You’d think that. But firstly manufacturers will literally need to sell EVs so that they can pay for their business transition and also simply survive economically. Secondly, holding on to a second hand EV for a long time, like any other car, will expose you to higher up-front costs to buy another one if an accident writes it off. Of course you can say that you would buy another second hand one, but 8-10 years old cars (EVs included) are generally worth £2k-£10k, so that’s still a good amount of money to spend. Whereas changing your car/EV every 4-5 years while it is still worth a decent amount of money allows you to sell it for a decent price that can help fund your next purchase. Your total monthly costs then remain roughly the same (repayment for small loan included) while you would get a more recent EV/car every 4 years or so (gap insurance cover as well in case of accident).

The first time I tried to climb up a kerb that was only one and a half inches high when parking, as I dropped back down into the tight space a chunk of rubber ripped out. This happened a second time on the next tyre after a couple of months, I didn't even notice when it happened. I dislike the really low profile tyres that the car has on 17 inches. Our Citroen Berlingo tyres would not even notice rthe kerb or pot holes that crash horribly on the Zoe. Fashion tyres/wheels seem pretty stupid to me. My Zoe does look very nice but my favourite car was my Suzuki SJ410 that I ran for 13 years and used to paint the white steel wheels every few years.... beautiful! It depends which particular chemistry but charge from 20% to 80% seems universal with them & they don't like being sat around fully charged - if you've got a battery use it regularly.
      If you want a battery you don't have to fuss with go for NiFe (Nickel-Iron), 1880s tech specifically developed for electric cars with uneducated drivers there's 90-year-old examples still in use for various things including submarines & industrial. I have to kind of disagree on Jonathan’s comments about Charge Place Scotland (CPS) because I think they’ve done an extremely difficult job in pulling different owners and Councils together under the CPS banner, otherwise just think how many Apps or cards you’d need if they hadn’t.
    He is right about getting things fixed though but this again is due to the different owners of charge points not having support or plans in place to get things fixed or parts replaced. It’s not really passing the buck as such.
    What is really the problem is Transport Scotland not pressing for more Fast/Rapid Charge Points at strategic locations and also on street parking for low tariff overnight charging in areas where they’re critically needed.
    Great to hear what’s happening in Orkney though. I used to charge at Scrabster Charge Point when I worked up near Thurso a few years ago. Never managed to get on the ferry over to Orkney though

    1. your bladder - obvious - time to charge
    2. your gut - you gotta eat - time to charge
    3. your butt - time for a short rest and stretch - time to charge

    We need a whole load of new ferries for Shetland's 14 separate (inhabited) islands too - should. We have one hundred 4.5 MWh about to come online most of which will be exported to the mainland using a connector cable that is more expensive than the windfarm it supports. So the replacement ferries should be electric battery operated, but I wouldn't want the SNP government to be left in charge of that contract!

    48:45 6-7 miles/kWh and 160-170 miles of range for a Volkswagen e-up, I seriously doubt that. EV database says 125-145 miles of real range (mild weather, mixed roads) and ~3.8-4.5 miles/kWh. Only the Hyundai Ioniq 2016-2019 28kWh can do 5.5-6.5 miles/kWh in mild weather and mixed roads 😊

    - ha ha, well my whole family is above 100% in offsetting their residential energy needs - for our residential needs, the grid supply is nice to have for the gaps in the system (otherwise the only economic way to fill in the gaps (Note - economically - the whole Orkney civilisation is hardly an economic endeavour) is with the use of fossil fuels - or overspending inordinately of a gold plated backup system, lessons for the wider community abound)....
    I am pretty much all in on (small scale) distributed LFP UPS installations - for avoiding brownouts and switching issues..
    When 30miles (or make it 60mi for the roundtrip) is the longest distance "from here to there" - no big deal...
    in Rural Australia it isn't all that long ago - every home had a wind turbine for pumping water to the header tanks, a generation earlier in the USA the same high-solidity turbines provided early rural electrification.
    Sad and misdirected frustrations - IF the energy is so magical, form a coop to provide it unmetered to the residents if the wind always blows - it must be too cheap to bother reading the meter- and don't bitch about the energy / cost burden on the elderly...
    "Energy Hungry" regarding the making of Hydrogen is meaningless in the context of curtailment - otherwise... Of course making energy to store for later is energy hungry, that is the point of a system of ling term storage and future dispatch (efficiency matters not a jot, when the alternative is to not generate the energy at all - if no fuel is burned the reis no downside - storing as a hydrocarbon or ammonia of course is superior than storing as low energy density high pressure hydrogen..)...
    Everyone can have battery storage -even if a whole house unit isn't possible a wheel-about unit plugged into the wall socket to charge up off the solar / wind and use all night is possible (co-op, again - citizens can help each other, - form up to provide supply at no profit to the needy....
    The BS from fleet users won't necesssarily translate to the retail user - Also a fleet car tends to use "garbage" E-friendly low performance tyres - they last but are terrible to drive on.. (company car users are generally not enthused by their cars...), ?? servicing?? - no extended warranty needed ?? - And gets charged at the company e-top-up-stand and, and, and... (B$$$ throughout the interview RL is remembering - fleet users toss the car long before any major issues arise - yes the ex-fleet source of personal EVs might definitely be the best option (I often get cars after they are 3-5 years old as company cars, at a very good price...

    So as ev ranges increase perhaps we should stop worrying about that and start considering in-car urinals. It may require some careful engineering. I am still not 100% clear on the best way to keep your ev battery's range as high as possible. So should you charge it up to 100% say once a month? otherwise leave it at a state of discharge.
    Should you try and avoid a discharge of lower than 20%
    Should you avoid using a rapid DC charger?
    Is it kinder to the battery to charge at 22kW ac or at 7kW ac ?
    Have I missed an episode that explains this quickly and simply for all to understand?

    • @genericuser2339
      @genericuser2339 Před 6 měsíci +2

      There is information out there but it can be confusing so I’ll keep it brief. The general advice is:
      1. If you can, typically charge to just 8o%.
      2. If you can, fast charge as little as possible and use your home 7/11 kw charger
      3. Battery chemistry / design has moved on since the early leafs, as has battery thermal management (early leafs had none).
      4. Some batteries (can’t remember the chemistry) don’t recommend you to do (1) above. Newer tech you see.
      5. I’ve seen videos from a taxi driver who fast charged his e Niro every day “on the job” as it were and at his 50k service his battery state of health was still 100%. So go figure.
      Some of the confusion is that what WAS true (early leaf is a prime example) is no longer true.
      Personally I charge my car to 80% max, unless I know I’ve a long journey coming up and I’ll charge it to 100%. These guys are talking about the early leafs, you know the pig ugly ones. Robert owns one, the other chap resells them.
      Also don’t forget, modern EVs are not charged to 100% when you charge them to 100%. There is headroom that you can’t see which the manufacturers deliberately don’t allow you to use to protect the battery from being kept at 100% the whole time. This is why people refer to the “usable” battery size. You might have heard that when people talk about EVs.
      Anyway don’t stress over it, as long as you don’t have an early leaf you’ll struggle to do anything wrong. Stick to the 80% rule for now until they tell us that’s all wrong too, or battery tech catches up or whatever.
      Peace.
