      I think you didn't really get going on your ideal battery capacity point Imogen...
      I've not been there and seen it for myself, but Oxford car parks have loads of 22kW chargers, which are ideal for people who are parked for a few hours. How about expanding that? City centre, railway station and business park car parks should have masses of 7.4kW (and even 3.7kW) chargers so people who work there and park for the day can charge for the full eight hours. People need to be incentivised (by cost) to select the appropriate charger for their needs, then you need fewer ultra fast chargers because they're not in use by someone who doesn't need that speed. The local supermarkets near me all have super fast charging, but only one or two charge points that are really expensive to use (except Lidl which is more reasonable). Why don't they have rows of 22kW points so someone who shops for 1 - 1.5 hours gets a decent amount of juice? The right chargers in the right place is what I'm saying I suppose. There's a place for ultra fast, but that is on motorways and trunk roads where people are having to interrupt their journey, whereas the other use cases are while you are doing something else
      And one more thing, the cost needs to come down, or there will forever be a chasm between people who can charge at home at night and people who charge on a public charger

    Great to see you all around the kitchen table and not so long after I've actually been able to meet you all at FC North and South, which was a great pleasure. A couple of bits I wanted to mention; the media highlighting problems rather than solutions is true but they are concentrating on problems with renewables/BEVs, I haven't seen daily news reports on the daily occurring oil leaks/spills/explosions/flaring off, or a running total of deaths from air pollution, floods, fires. We all know that the reason for over stating issues with the transition are sponsored by the fossil fuel industry. And thank you for highlighting the death and destruction caused everyday by air pollution, my friends 12 year old daughter is being treated for throat cancer caused by the air pollution in her city. So for all those complaining about the inconvenience and cost of ULEZ etc...I don't care, catch public transport. Finally the hail storm; couldn't solar panels in high risk areas be given less rigid (rubber?) mounts, to absorb some of the impact? Or motorised to turn end on during the storm? I'm assuming these are in solar farms, on frames. Thanks again and great to see the Stop Burning Stuff launch, to counter the BS with facts.

    • @JohnRoss1
      @JohnRoss1 Před 11 měsíci

      Solar panels that track (move) likely can't react fast enough to turn out of harms way. They are supposed to go flat in high wind to reduce stress, but a sudden downburst from a thunderstorm will hit the solar array and tip it over or shear it from its mounts. The only way to reduce the chance of wind damage is smaller arrays of 5 kW in windy areas. As they discussed if the hail is that big a glass panel is just going to break. This is why we carry insurance on the system😂,

    • @Nikoo033
      @Nikoo033 Před 11 měsíci

      They could use ultrasound or infrared pulses shot above the panels towards the sky to destroy the ice balls before impact 😁

    • @dougowt
      @dougowt Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@JohnRoss1 You'd only need sensors around the area to detect the storm was heading their way. The panels could be vertical before the first hail stones arrive.

    On the topic of the continuation of the internal combustion engine, there has been recent sizable pushback to the EV transition. I know this was covered in another podcast you did recently.
    I think the actions and remarks from VW re their concerns for their EV business, the roll of Porsche in 'watering down' EU policy re emission policy in Europe, the roll of some of the biggest Japanese car brands in moving the dialogue away from EV, and off course the root of many of these issues in the politics from the fossil fuel industry in the USA; these are hot issues to not lose sight on. Expect big push-back against EV transition over the coming years.

    Regarding hail storms and PV- most solar panels continue to work after being damaged by major hail storms. An Australian research found only ~10% production capacity loss after such events in a few PV farms. Also, fixing damaged solar panels is easy, fast and cheap. Especially when compared to big centralized power stations (fossil, hydroelectric, nuclear...).
    PV farms show remarkable resilience even against intentional bombing by Russia in Ukraine.b

However, you'd have to leave some nodules in the same area because marine animals use the nodules to perch on, hunt from etc. As I Environmental Chemist in the US, I am against deep sea mining because I have seen almost 50 years of bad mining practices and political lies in my lifetime. However, I do take your point. All mining practices need to improve.

    Something that doesn't seem to be high on any radar is how we efficiently recycle all of these ICE cars that are going to be replaced before their normal lifetime. They will likely have lots of materials that can be utilised if we are ready and prepared for the task, otherwise they will be left to rot. I also think that the industry needs to look deeper into the engine replacement possibilities. It's being done on a small scale, but the potential is huge. There are lots of perfectly good cars that can have an excellent extended life without their polluting ICE engines.

    Thanks for the discussion.
    In my view internal combustion engines will disappear quite qickly as batteries take over in more and more applications.
    The cell format for BEV batteries (and related traction like applications) still needs to evolve. Thus Tesla has its cylindrical 21250 jelly roll; BYD blade shaped cells, other manufacturers, various prismatic 'brick' shaped cells.
    Ultimately, cost of manufacture, efficiency and safety will lead to one main configuration. Form will then follow function.
    It may take some years for the optimum configuration to become clear. As manufacturers close in on the 'optimum', costs will rapidly reduce.

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 Před 10 měsíci

      What's a "21250"?
      Tesla has....
      "18650". Supplied by Pansonic in Japan, used in the Model S/X
      .
      "2170". Manufactured in a long standing partnership with Panasonic, at the Nevada Gigafactory, the predominant cell until recently, used in Model 3, Model Y, certain storage products and early versions of the Tesla Semi truck.
      .
      They also use cells of various form factors supplied by CATL, LG, and recently (rumoured?) BYD.
      .
      Finally, in the last year they have been producing limited, but increasingly significant numbers of in-house *4680* cylindrical cells.
      THESE are currently ramping in production.
      They use numerous innovative processes, materials and techniques and will become *THE* cell format of choice, mainly due to the ability to produce not only a large quantity of cells, but more importantly a super high output capacity (TeraWatt hours) from a comparatively small factory, using less energy and far fewer undesirable chemicals.
      .
      This cell will be incredibly cheap, quite possibly limited only by raw material supply.
      .
      The dimensions also make the cell suitable for use as a structural element in the chassis, making the vehicle lighter, safer, more efficient, plus(!) Innovation within the cell should (will) result in
      Much less heat generation (better efficiency) and faster charging.

    Hail is quite common in the southern US and it is robust (having lived in Texas, I can attest to this), not to mention tornados and/or hurricanes.
    Roger is awesome and so positive. To elaborate on the group think, What usually gets lost is the stark reality that EV sales have slowed as all the early adopters already have one. It’s vital to pivot to the next quartile of potential buyers. Folks like me who are open to it but frankly a bit ignorant. It needs a new marketing approach (such as Jim Farley identified with the lightning)

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 Před 10 měsíci

      Re "EV sales slowing"
      Not really due to the "post early adopter" dip.
      Tesla is selling VERY well.
      The issue is that other companies are hitting the "hump" predicted by some (myself included) of having to fund viable EVs with Fossil Fuel profits, advertising both and not having the technology or the production facilities for the next phase of ubiquitous, cheap (cheaper) EVs.
      Jim Farley is being.... 'necessarily pragmatic', trying to survive until 2025, by which time they *might* have their factory open for vehicles *and* batteries (with, it seems, the assistance of Tesla)
      It's the end game of the industry attitude in the early 2010s.

As ICE cars age they tend to start to cost more to maintain, in addition the fuel cost becomes a higher proportion of the residual value making it less and economic depending on your annual mileage. We haven't seen a disruption quite like this before - there's CRT to flat screens, mobile phones to smart phones but this is expensive heavy technology. This is a pretty unique shift.

      I agree. Once people realise they’re sat on a pot of money that they can use to buy a lovely EV, they’ll get rid of their ICE car more and more quickly. And the resale value of 2nd hand ICE cars is going to fall and the ICE owners are going to quickly realise that their “pot of money” is melting like snow in the sunlight. 😂 which will only accelerate the switch. We have a petrol head in our neighbourhood (2 classic cars, 1 big SUV, 1 leisure van and what not), had always been moaning about EVs. His daughter shows up the other day, having bought a Mini electric. She took him for a drive and the guy is now amazed “so smooth to drive”, etc… people… I swear 🤪

    First of all I really really want that map. Second I have long thought a product price should reflect the total cost of its creation impact and cleanup at purchase. This would have to be implemented over time. Also I seem to remember a pneumatic car that used compressed air for its battery what ever happened to that company? That could bridge the transition to electric now.

  • @MrKlawUK
    @MrKlawUK Před 11 měsíci

    regarding combustion engines - is a mix of direct hydrogen burning + synthetic fuels something that can give enough of the market or soften the transition? efuels wouldn’t solve air quality, and both would need to be net zero generated. My feeling is that the volume will be low and price high to the point where BEVs are just simpler (if it takes 4x the electricity to make efuel/H2 then you could have electrified 4x as many BEVs than alternatives). So perhaps more suited for the legacy ICE fleet and/or low volume supercars, and some nice use cases (perhaps farm machinery/other)?

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hydrogen burning is both incredibly inefficient and corrosive to existing engines (contrary to what some will say)
      Just btw, if you really think it through, there is NO green hydrogen, untill the grid is 100% green..... At which point you don't need "green" hydrogen of transport.
      Biofuels are incredibly energy intensive to produce.

    The perfect battery size is a compromise. As energy density grows, we can have larger capacity while maintaining or reducing weight and material usage. And I think we'll continue to grow in capacity until we get down to a 5min 80% charge. Even when it's only ~5% of the time that the majority of us are driving beyond the vehicle range. Once we get to that 5min 80% charging time, then we'll likely start seeing a reduction in average battery capacity.

    She went into computer programming from school in the late seventies before computers were as ubiquitous as they are now. I often wonder what happened to her since I last saw her and if shes met any other gay people who might have made her regret walking out on me when I came out to her forty years ago this year! I'm still with the same person so I'm still no danger to her!
    I think it must have been the fart jokes in the lift and the ridiculous giggling over suck, squeeze, bang, blow that made me think of her. 🤣
    Wonder if she's still about or maybe she's gone to America and joined the barmy army who follow the man who's name is synonymous with a fart!

    Excellent chat @EverythingElectricShow / @fullychargedshow , very interesting, People need to stop thinking of EV's being BEV's as electric batteries may not be the future, there's Hydrogen Fuel Cells, Nuclear Fission or preferably one day ideally Fusion, massively more efficient Solar, induction roads, or whatever the next great thing around the corner turns out to be. Hey it might actually turn out to be a instantly chargeable chemical battery or Capacitor?
    The future's bright, assuming the Sun can still shine through the atmosphere ;-)
    EV is Electric Vehicle it's source of power (electricity) could be from anything. good or bad, ideally good.

    I'm not so sure we should be moving away from cobalt (unless there are good chemical reasons to do so). I suspect that some of the places where cobalt is mined would struggle to make a living if this source of income was taken away. Better, I think, would be to impose checks and standards on these places to improve the lot of the miners and bring their health, safety and wellbeing up to decent levels. I have worked in a number of industries where these types of standards are demanded by buyers and the standards can be quality, hygiene, ethical and others. In short, battery making could improve the world by more than simply allowing us to become clean and sustainable.

    The deep sea mining guy that Robert interviewed was called Gerrard Baron (I think). The company then was called Deep Green, but is now called The Metals Company (TMC). Roger's absolutely right that these polymetallic nodules need to be picked instead of sucked off the ocean floor. They must be relatively easy to 'detect', so picking them must be well within the technological capabilities of these mining companies
    Dave Borlace did a video about this last week czcams.com/video/t_w1Mj0Hsr4/video.html (not the picking, but the destruction that will be caused by sucking the nodules)

    What happens to the business model of the existing structure of petrol stations as the demand for petrol and diesel reduces. Surely with a reduction in need for fossil fuels petrol stations will need to increase prices to remain financially viable. This will then lead to more people changing to ev further reducing the demand. At what level of ev adoption will the existing fossil fuel industry start to collapse. Less demand, causing higher prices leading to petrol stations closing production range anxiety for ICE vehicle drivers having to travel miles to find fuel at ever increasing prices
