Or if if was an ICE vehicle you would have just filled it before leaving and driven the whole way without ever thinking about fuel and if you did there would have been petrol stations to dive in and out of in a few minutes.
We're in Australia and if we drive West it will be something like 1300 kms just to get to border of the next state and the border is still in the middle of nowhere.

@@justgetatesla But your "breaks" are dictated by the need to charge aren't they?
I would rather stop for a few minutes, refuel and then stop where I choose if that's what I want to do.
9 hrs is hardly a long drive either imo.
If I'm driving those distances, and I have many times, I want to get the job done and then stop.
These days I do it when I'm going away in my 4wd camping so sitting at some refuelling location for any length of time is just a waste of time imo.

I live in Australia and have Tesla Model 3 LR. I also have a 13kW rooftop solar system which paid for itself in 3 1/2 years. As I'm retired I am able to charge my EV from my solar during the day. So far I have driven 4,833 kms and charged it entirely from my solar system with 724 kWh of electricity. During the last couple of years i cut down on my driving due to the high petrol price and only drove about 6,000 km per year. Now, with the Tesla and free electricity I'm likely to drive about 20,000 kms this year.

Hi Ian. Thanks once again for another interesting insight into driving in the UK. I was a Tesla driver until October last year when unfortunately I was in a really bad accident in my 6 month old MY RWD and it was written off. Absolutely no fault of my own. The oncoming driver had just come off shift and had fallen asleep at the wheel of his monster 4X4 with equally monstrous roo bar (bull bar) which impacted my MY at the front right wheel and just demolished the whole side of the car. I was relatively unharmed apart from some bad bruising but I must admit that I now suffer some chronic back pain following the accident. Anyway, I'll likely wait until the new MY Juniper is available before I buy another but I must admit, much as I miss my Tesla, I'm very unsure about the new M3 with no indicator stalks. I'm not sure why Tesla has removed them and don't think I like the alternative. One thing for sure must be improved if I do consider the new MY is the suspension must be more compliant and therefore more comfortable. We have a BYD Atto 3 and that is like floating on air in comparison. Really like the BYD. We've had it for 18 months now and apart from the off-beat interior, I have to say it's almost a perfect ride. My wife in particular just loves it. Anyway, just wanted to ask you if you've noticed the huge amount of media articles regarding EVs recently and putting EVs in such a negative light? The coverage especially on CZcams, seems absolutely relentless as do the comments from the 40 watters re the media sensationalism - dumbass comments saying not to buy an EV as it will catch on fire or if you're in an accident you can't open the doors and you'll be incinerated or there's not enough lithium or the batteries have to be thrown away - THROWN AWAY! - as after 100K miles (160K km) they're of no use any longer - even child labour mining lithium - so far as I'm aware here in Australia we don't use children for lithium mining! What do you think about all the negativity? It really gets to me as I see the other side of things and thoroughly enjoy what we have. Great work anyway mate. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I've heard the Chicago incident was largely to do with ride share drivers, who rent their cars and don't read the manual, who didn't precondition or leave it long enough to warm up on the charger. Also the weather was terrible, lake effect, winds etc. So yes it was the worst possible situation and Tesla should have been there to sort it out IMO. But people in Canada and Alaska were fine. One was an EV and the other the ICE equivalent.
The EV cost more in to charge, and the costs have gone up since for fast charging, took longer due to charging, had issues with finding a charger due to a network outage and cost a lot more to buy.

Hang on, your “argument” keeps shifting. When did I mention free charging? Free? Back in 2014 they were free, but that’s a decade ago. Tesla superchargers are significantly cheaper than non-Tesla chargers. A demonstrated established fact. Most not Tesla rapids are 79p or more per kWh. Supercharger won’t cost more than 51p and that’s only for a few peak hours - often 31p a kWh. I have done a direct comparison of the same trip in my Tesla vs my previous PHEV and diesel cars in another video. Significantly cheaper in the Tesla.
They you go to depreciation? Please. The most money I ever lost was on a diesel - almost 67% in less than 3 years. The least I ever lost was on the PHEV that replaced the diesel - £500 in 18 months after doubling the mileage. Markets ebb and flow. I genuinely pity the mindset which needs sad argument after sad argument none of which hold up to any scrutiny. You don’t want one? Don’t get one. Why the need to waste your time and my time and everyone else’s time posting the same fact free guff?

Good video... I am always concerned about running the battery too low due to the long term health. I have a Genesis Electrified G80, (my annual mileage is very low - 3 to 4,000 miles pa) in early Dec, by my standards i did a relatively long trip from London to Paris and back, and in the colder weather 0 deg, i was awa4e how economy suffered with the higher French autoroute speeds of 80 mph i was getting 2.5 miles per kWh, compared to 3.5 for the same trip in the summer. So i arrived at Calais Ionity chargers from Paris with less than 20% and was a little paranoid about letting the batter go that low! Maybe with Tesla they say it doesn't matter to go down to empty...

    • @jeclark
      @jeclark Před 5 měsíci

My understanding is that it’s fine for long term battery health to use the full capacity of the battery. The only thing to be avoided is storing the batteries long-term at a high or low state of charge (i.e. above 80% or below 20%). It’s fine to charge to 100% if you’re going to be using it the next day or allow it to drop below 20% as long as you charge it as soon as practicable. Also the battery management system (BMS) maintains a buffer top and bottom so 100% isn’t actually 100% and 0% isn’t actually 0%. Charging to 100% occasionally also allows the BMS to balance all the cell voltages across the battery pack to maintain a healthy system. Look out for videos on CZcams featuring battery scientist Dr Euan McTurk who covers this in detail.

Well, y'know, if you can't afford a Tesla, or even if your lifestyle means you need a hatchback, it ain't that bad.
Same day, in an MG4. OK, not such a long journey, but the MG4 SE SR doesn't have the range of a Tesla. Why did I let myself in for this? Long story, never mind. Really if I don't want to have to charge twice, I HAVE to charge at Penrith. Why? Because any earlier and I won't be able to get enough into the battery to get to my destination, and I ain't going to make it to Kirkby Lonsdale, the next possible charger, on my winter range and with the speed I like to do on the motorway.
But really, the main problem is bloody Tesla. The ideal place to stop for me isn't Penrith, it's Tebay. But guess what, Tebay only has Tesla chargers, and they're not open to non-Teslas. This is seriously not fair. Don't open the chargers if you don't want to, but why the hell aren't there some Gridserves or something for us plebs too? So I'm stuck with Penrith. Which doesn't look good.
Two Instavolts at Booth's supermarket, 150 Kw but rumoured to be shared power. And an old Gridserve installation at the Rheged Discovery Centre with two 50 Kw chargers, both shared power again, three CCS connectors. I'm prepared for the worst.
Pull off the motorway at Penrith, check ZapMap. Booths looks like a bust, both chargers in use and recent "last used" times - that's a queue. (Found out later from a comment on PlugShare that this was due to one guy who sat on one of the chargers for ages - like he was going to Outer Mongolia or something.) But, the Rheged Centre? A free plug, last used 15 minutes ago. Bingo. Even if I don't get that, there isn't a queue. I zipped down to the Rheged Centre PDQ.
I was in luck. As I drove in I saw the free space, nobody had pipped me to it. And even better, it was the charger where the other connector is the CHAdeMO. Unless Mr Leaf shows up, I have this to myself. (There were cars on both the CCS connectors on the other charger.) Reversed up to the charger. tapped my credit card, charger liked the colour of my money and said on you go, plugged the car in, and the charge started instantly. I'd even managed to hit a dry spell in the middle of the torrential downpours that were a feature of the journey.
Really nice coffee shop. Fruit scone with jam and clotted cream. Nice delicatessen, buy something to take to my hosts. Car only does 88 Kw at best and that was just a 50 Kw charger, but I was at 85% within 40 minutes and had enough to get to my destination. Mr Leaf never did show up. (Though when I got back the next driver to turn up had caught on to the shared power issue on the other charger and switched to mine when I unplugged.)
It was actually really relaxing. A huge improvement on the same journey the previous year when I ended up sitting in my Golf parked next to a petrol station shop that was just a Portakabin, eating crisps and (of all things) mini Easter eggs (because all they sold was sweets) while I breathed the fumes from a continuous stream of cars and vans coming and going.
So even if you don't have a Tesla, life can be good.

Todhills, Southwaite, Killington Lake, Forton, all just the old Gridserves and nothing at Tebay. So I'm scratching around Booth's supermarkets and Greenlands Farm Shop.
I managed fine though, even in a 51 KWh car. Still, it would be so nice just to pull into a service station and get on with it, as I did at Cherwell Valley and Burton-in-Kendal. Now Southwaite and Forton have been done (yay to the latter!) and I can see it happening in other places too. Fastned have introduced a plug-in-and-walk-off system like Tesla has, and I hear a rumour that Gridserve are looking at doing the same.
It won't be that long before you Tesla guys won't have so much to be superior about! 😁
(I think actually the point of my story was that even without the upgrades the EV trip was still so much nicer than the previous year's in my ICE car, when I also had to do one fuel stop. That's the comparison I'm seeing, more than with the undoubtedly slicker operation Tesla offers.)

Pah. 2014. One rapid charger. At Wetherby. In a 50kW Leaf. With one charging and 2 in the queue ahead of me. Not only was I very late home (Teesside), the guessometer was wrong and I ended up on turtle mode for the last mile home…
