      I had no problem guessing the languages right. The tricky part is getting the country right since several of these languages are not only spoken but official languages in more than one country. Dutch is official in both the Netherlands and Belgium, German is official in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium and Lichtenstein, Italian in Italy and Switzerland, and Greek in both Greece and Cyprus. As someone who doesn’t speak either of those languages, it’s hard for me to distinguish between accents that could be clues to nationality.

    I have taken classes in Spanish and Italian and I get the two mixed up all the time. 3 years of Spanish in high school and one semester of Italian in college. Since most of the words are of the same origin, when guessing I rely on the accent which makes it hard because both languages have many accents. I'm learning German right now so that one was easy for me. I picked out the Dutch easily because it sounds like German but with that "j" sound and more nasally vowels, but I couldn't narrow it down between Belgium and the Netherlands until she named her country's famous foods. The only one I did not get right was Greece, I have so little exposure to it that I had no idea what to listen for (other than "helle"). All of my education in Greek and Roman history used Latinized terms for everything, especially because so much of it was in Latin class.

    At this point the show has to make it clear to the guesser if we're guessing just the language or the nationality. Because in Europe, there are a good number of countries with multiple official languages while some just share the same national language. Like a person speaking French might not be from France, a person speaking Dutch might not be from the Netherlands etc. Countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg definitely make the guessing much harder 😂. Of course the European natives may argue that there are different dialects, regional accents, different pronunciation of words or choice of vocab that they can pick up and use to distinguish the different countries. But for a complete beginner to the language, or for a foreigner, we definitely struggle to identity the language itself let's not talk about accents. 🤣

    the last one would have basically been just a big WTF from me. i mean she has an accent(as some in comments pointed out). usually Greek can be spotted by the fact that it sounds Spanish but the words are in no way similar to other European languages. the rest were easy enough. it took me suprisingly long(ok, 2 scentences) to spot German. i mean Spanish can be a bit confusing since there are languages in Spain that sound like Spanish but aren't Spanish and a whole lot of country in South America that also speak Spanish.

    • @gecko3890
      @gecko3890 Před 11 měsíci

      I will correct you in the phrase you say "no way similar to other European Languages". Greek, Latin, Slavic, and Germanic are the predominant European branches that created the Languages. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and some French come from Latin, for example. But all languages, including English, have a bunch of Greek words in their vocabulary, and some of them are not only for academic purposes.
      I believe that if she was speaking with a typical Greek accent, you would understand her immediately.

    • @yvs6663
      @yvs6663 Před 11 měsíci

      @@gecko3890 Greek is its own language family and while some words in English do come from Greek(since they basically invented some of the things they describe), far more words in English come from Romance languages like Spanish(and maybe French). so an English speaker would recognise more words in a Spanish scentence than they would in a Greek scentence.

    The producers threw a curveball with Greece. She has a very unique accent, from Cyprus. Most foreigners would not guess that she is speaking Greek.
    Fun fact: The Cypriot dialect is much closer to ancient Greek than regular Greek from Greece is.
    Same goes for Pontic Greek (now Turkey) and Griko/Greco (now Italy).
