      @@user-ov7mb2qs2y no one is denying the fact that there are also dumb and ignorant people in Europe, but of course you have to understand that even if one of the US states is bigger than a european country it doesn't justify the lack of culture or knowledge of some parts of the US population. US is a federal state, even if its bigger than many countries each state has its own government that means that even if the country itself is huge you still have respective governments on different regions to administrate its respective population, even in Spain each autonomous community regulates its educational system following the basic structure set by the national government. So, yes, not all americans can be put in the same box, but no, the size of your country has nothing to do with the matter so stop using it as an excuse for the lack of culture some of your population has.
      The stereotype is, as you say, that the US is the third most populated country which means the stereotype is proportional to your population

    Either way, there are so many things that actually determine knowledge. Interest in whatever topic fuels you to actually remember what you learn...

    I think there are several reasons why (north) americans might know less about other countries. For example, they are separated from all countries, except Mexico and Canada, by 2 oceans. So they aren't really close geographically to any countries besides those 2, whereas europeans have been historically very close to each other. Also americans have less historical relationship with the inception of other countries than europeans, since europeans started the Age of Exploration and the United States is the result of it. So it makes more sense that europeans know more about those places they historically explored, traded with and/or conquered. Plus the United States is a much younger country.
    Another reason is that the U.S. has been the global super power for decades, and it has been exporting its culture to the world (films, music, fashion, food, etc) to a greater extent that it has been importing other cultures (granted, the culture of the United States is a mix of the cultures of the people who historically built the country, but you get what I mean, they have their own distinct culture). That may change in the future, but until know that has been the case. So I think part of it is that they know less about other countries because they didn't need to know. Also the U.S. is a big country, almost as big as the geographical territory of europe, so it is a bit like they live in their own world and learn mostly about their own history and geography.

    Intelligence is more about problem solving.

  • @raffaelefederico5427
    @raffaelefederico5427 Před 7 měsíci +42

    The problem with this video is the same mistake that many people make (all over the world), that is, confusing two completely different things, intelligence (which is extremely difficult to evaluate) and knowledge, i.e. culture.
    In general it's true that when it comes to culture, North Americans are in very bad shape because their school system is ridiculous, but, in fact, this has nothing to do with intelligence.
    Having said that.... damn!... I must say that they all fared quite badly... even the Europeans didn't shine, hesitating on some very simple things. For example how did they not recognize immediatly Argentina!!??... Damn I could have understood, for example, Montenegro! Which is a small European state... But Argentina... damn!! It's one of the largest and most famous countries in the world!
    But I must also say that not all the questions were as easy as the first ones, for example the last ones, the ones with Andrea, were objectively very difficult.
    Despite everything, in the end the result was clear, and this despite the fact that European girls also complained a lot about the school systems of their countries, highlighting the problems that certainly exist. Education is truly one of the great problems of our time!!

One of the Americans has a degree in political science and it's obvious that she studied international politics and some general geography, so she did a little better. Even so, the first 1/4 of the video was used to refute the reputation of American stupidity in relation to the world. In the middle 1/2 of the video, the Europeans massacred the Americans and showed the reality of American education in relation to geography, geopolitics and general knowledge, and the last 1/4 was for the Americans to apologize and the Europeans to show that in addition to having better educational background and general knowledge, they are also very polite. Very polite? There was so much subtle hints of superiority complex towards the American women. Those Europeans were not nice at all. When they were losing, one of them tried to make the excuse that this isn’t about being smart anymore, it’s about how fast you are. They were taking this too personally. Then later on, the Spaniard woman hit the bell too hard and the American comforted her while the Spaniard was quick to say “oh but I pressed it first” when no one objected it in the first place. Then once they won, one of them gloated about winning.
      Okay, Europeans on average are more educated than Americans but this video also solidified the stereotype that Europeans more conceited and judgmental whereas Americans on average are more nicer and humble. Nothing personal but that is the way things are.

    Like they all said, the quizzes did not really test intelligence. If they did something like this again, a random knowledge would be a better show. Also, I did want to point out that Americans and Europeans were tied going into the final round of identifying language by its fonts. They both were hitting the bell nearly simultaneously and two of them (as was mentioned) looked nearly the same. It really came down to who could hit the bell faster, again not really measuring intelligence. "Some people don't have the chance of having a good educational system": See that's the thing, in many european countries, there's is a general system that ensures you to have access to education. US system is so about a finality of making business that if you don't have the money you won't access a decent school and if you do you'll have to specialize in 1 task and ignore general knowledge or other domains.
    I personally think the US system is dumb, i'll let you judge the effects on its population...

    American education is actually good, but it is hyperspecialized. You choose your classes early on and you learn them really well, but you don't learn anything else. It gets even more noticeable at college and university levels. As a result you have amazing American specialists, among the best in the world, but they have very little knowledge outside their field. It is really weird to see how even high-profile Americans have lots of diplomas, earn a lot of money, are respected in their field, but they don't know basic things that children in other countries know.

    • @felipevlllll
      @felipevlllll Před 3 měsíci

      That´s not a bad thing though, as long as you don´t change your mind in the middle of the process, it´s actually really efficient. I mean why would you choose to know a little of everything instead of a lot of what you will use?
      The big difference i think is in high school. Most countries teach general knowledge in high school, while in USA, as you said, they specialize in an early stage.
      This might be the con, but there are a lot of pros of it too.

    • @tentonmotto6779
      @tentonmotto6779 Před 3 měsíci

      @@felipevlllll When you focus on one thing too much you lose perspective of a greater world. That comes with a lot of reprecussions.
      One of them is that a person gets vulnerable and poorly prepared to face unfamiliar problems. Once this person gets in a situation outside their field they often lack knowledge and critical thinking to understand what's going on. Often they either blindly trust everything an expert tells them or paranoidly distrust that expert.
      If a problem is also complex it gets really bad. One of the reasons American politics are so messed up is because in the greater world everything is connected to everything. A policy choice in one field affects the other fields too. A nation of hyperspecializers has a particularly hard time understanding those connections. You basically ask people who know very little to make far-reaching multidisciplinary choices. For example, U.S. foreign policy is extremely important both for the country and the rest of the world. But the general course of that policy is chosen by voters who mostly have very little understanding of their own history and interests, let alone history and interests of other countries. Which often leads to a disaster. I don't want to make it look like it is only the American problem, but in other countries with greater emphasis on general knowledge it is not as pronounced. People there have more systematic and holistic point of view.
      There are also other problems caused by hyperspecislization like cross-team misunderstandings delaying projects and the like. But the important thing is people's lack of balanced development. If they don't know what else is out there, how would they grow?
      And finally, it is unreasonable to make teenagers make far-reaching career choices before they even turn 18. Again, it is not just American problem, but American hyperspecialized education, and especially paid education system make it hard for people to back out if they are unhappy with their choice. A chemistry student in Finland, who realizes that it is not their thing (for personal or career prospects reasons) would have a far easier time backing out and switching careers. They have more general knowledge, so they don't have to begin from zero, they may have received education for free (no student loans) and they may not pay for their next education either. American student in the same situation would either stay in their field, no matter how unhappy or low paid they are or switch and lose a lot of time and money.

    D'apres ce que j'ai pu comprendre les américains ont pu lire plus vite le texte (la questions).
    Donc il avait un avantage.
    Si le texte était écrit dans les deux langues alors elles pourraient être plus rapides pour répondre.

    I don't fully agree with what they are saying. You don't learn this things at school, you know them if you are interested and learn it by yourself. That's the diference between people that are good or bad in general knowledge; interest.

      I agree. A large part of the reason why geographical knowledge is greater outside of the US is because of exposure. International sports teams, entertainment, and news are just much more common and popular outside of the US

    One of the Americans is more knowledgeable than the other. I guess the American public school system is deficient, too much freedom and rap for the kids.

      American education system doesn't care about the 195 different national flags...and why should it? I can find this information with an internet search.
