Great to have options. At the ~600 pricepoint I might personally take the Polygon Xtrada 5 - no dropper, 2x10 deore, tektro hydraulics. But for a beginner the ability to roll this off the rack - and roll it back in to return if they don't enjoy their first couple rides - is huge. A complete XC trail-worthy build for the price of a Marlin frameset is hard to look down on.
anyone i run into moving away from the big box bikes, i try to point to polygon. i've owned the xtrada 7 and T7 and my god. the smiles per miles factor on top of the kit for the money is insane
I think a set of race face pedals, definitely fox 34 forks and a fizik saddle would make this a beast of a bikeâŠ
Saw this in the store yesterday while looking for an Ozark Trail G.1 Explorer. The paint on this bike look really good.
I love my axum but honestly feel schwinn is missing the mark on this one. The bike market isnt crazy like before. $550 is just too much for a bike when everything on the bike is noname except the drive train. Take the Canyon grand 5, $50 more and you get a 12 speed deore setup, mt200 hydros, schwalbe tires, suntour fork, other name brand parts. Only thing is no dropper
Isn't the canyon grand 5 a 27.5" bike?
â@@lukem7203Just on XS and S sizes. M and larger is 29"
@@lukem7203rather have 27.5
And you can commonly find the grand canyon for sale very rarely for 400 and commonly at 500 dollars.
Okay I'm going to research that baby you mention.
The new Ozark Trail Ridge revision has added external routing points that can be used, but still has the full internal routing. It would have been cool to see Schwinn do something similar on this bike.
Any idea when it will be released to the market?
I would still go for the Ozark over this for the price difference. I'm upgrading most of it anyways.
@@masoncheung715 it already is I have one of the updated versions in a large
I like the external routing
Makes dealing w hydraulic brakes so much easier.
I do not. Would be better if it came with BOTH external and internal routing so we could choose.
It does seem more practical.
Want to like it for all the above practical reasons.... But it just too messy and ugly at this price point.
External cable routing is all the convincing I need. Let 2025 be The Year of the Externally Routed Frame.
Walmart is killing it with all these great, affordable, capable bikes.
Simply BEAUTIFUL!
Very nice. Thanks for sharing this with us. Good to see you on trails. đ
Started watching this, only 22 seconds after upload, lol!
Bonus points đđ»
Iâve been waiting for this video!!
glad youre back to mtn bike videos!
Looks pretty decent! Thanks for sharing.
Funny you post this today. Just last night I was wondering a recently remodeled Walmart and saw a new Axum Sport in quite the eye catching paint.
I subbed from your polygon review i love your reviews
That's a surprisingly good looking bike,Kev! And with a dropper too plus Jagwire cabling.
I really like the lines on that frame. Can't wait for the geometry numbers. Thanks for the video
I did a little bit of digging. Not sure how accurate this information is but 67 degree head tube and weighing in just over 36 lbs. Anyone feel free to correct me on this.
Technically Microshift doesn't claim that acolyte has a clutch but it does the job.
I think they call it a spring lock, but it seems to have less play when locked than the microshift and even Shimano Deore clutch derailleurs seem to have.
A lot of companies are switching back to external routing which is awesome, Kona process 134 has external routing except dropper and Iâm loving it
Miss my old Axum ! Now I ride a Giant Full Sus and love it , but the axum was a fun bike ride
I am loving seeing bike shop quality finally at Walmart it's insane to see Sr forks on bikes and I hope this becomes the standard fully
that's a beautiful frame
I love the color. Went to WalMart today for lunch and saw a clearance rack outside with a few bikes on it. Nothing I wanted but I'll keep my eye out for these. I'll say it again, you're a bad influence sir!
I have used the Acolyte drivetrain in the past. It works excellent. Kev, wondering if you turned the clutch on though if it was making noise. You have to turn that bolt to the right until the top lever clicks in place.
I was waiting for this one too. I was thinking, if that bike is $548, and you upgrade to hydraulic brakes, and a better fork, that's about as much as a polygon. I'd go with the polygon personally. Good looking bike, live your channel
the xtrada 7 is about the best bang for buck xc hardtail on the planet. bar none
I saw this yesterday in Waly World. It caught my eye and looked good. So weird you post this today.
The Specliazed Status (frame and rear shock only) can be found for $419 right now. Would love to see a budget build on that
Good looking frame, kind of reminds me of a Diamondback.
Available in two sizes on the website..........Sweet looking ride!
I saw this at one of the Walmarts locally and thought âwait, Kev usually does a video before I see these new models!â
Great review as always Kev. Wouldn't have to do much to make that bike more capable. Great job, Schwinn. Now let's see how you do with a full suspension. Bring back the S29 and Ember. And make them GOOD.
It would be really interesting to see the old Axum(s) compared to the new, especially a side view!! they have a cool video on the Walmart page where they talk about the different models of the new Axums! Very cool, it seems like the Axum is here to stay. However- LOTS of differences from my BLACK / GOLD SPARKLE AXUM!! I don't know if I could fit a 72V battery on that new Axum frame!! The chainstays and the toptube are soo low! Less room for a battery on that Comp X. I got the 228 sale on the black Axum, Man I love that bike. Never pulled the trigger buying anything faster in my life Lol. Got it going almost 46mph. Looking forward to seeing more of these new Axums. Thanks Kev!!
The microshift acolyte is a great upgrade. I put it on my axum diy ebike(cyc photon) and have a couple hundred miles on it without issue.
I've had and upgraded my Axum DP for almost 3yrs. Never had one issue from it. And love the look of confusion when others see "It's a Schwinn, not a LBS"đ
Not bad, but I really feel like manufacturers need to start to truly future proof these frames by adding 12x148 rear axle spacing. I feel like it's easier, and dare I say less expensive, to find wheelset upgrades with the 12x148 axles these days.
This thing is rad for the price.
Between it, and the affordable upgrade parts, I hope they sell a lot of them.
Would buy.
You can easily tighten the clutch on acolyte, if you need to. I would upgrade the fork and brakes and there you go.
This looks like a potential candidate. It looks quite upgradable as parts wear out.
I got the Ozark trail vibe it's the 27 1/2 wheel size however I just had that to hold me over until I got my taxes I got my taxes last Wednesday and found a trek Roscoe 8 for 600 bucks in mint condition
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how a bike like this compares to a more mid-range hardtail like the Specialized Fuse.
Good review and very nice bike, but wouldâve been nice to get a demonstration of the âdropper post.â I just saw this bike in Walmart the other day and Iâm very interested in getting one
RESPECT! âđŸ
here in the philippines that frame is rebrand to speedone defender v2 enduro frame.
Very nice! But I would have preferred the external cable routing to be underneath the downtube.
as a hardcore axum fan, i like it. the slight price up over the dp is worth it for the improved drive train imo. but thats the only real upgrade. from the over sized tires to the lack luster brakes, its still the axum we know and love :D its even the same dropper post. i am still trying to figure out why the walmart standard large got smaller. i think kent started it, but still. 18 is, imo, a M/L
So OG Axum $400 + $100 for dropper post inclusion + $48 dollars and we get a nicer derailleur.
$100 used to be pretty hard to beat for a dropper but now with the way the bike industry is you can find that sale on a Race Face or such.
Its a big upgrade but the Polygon Xtrada 5 29" comes with hydraulic brakes, 2x10 deore drivetrain and thru axles for $600.
It seems like there are so many variable parts when it comes to Mongoose and Schwinn, depending on the type, those balloon đ tires might possibly pop before the tread is lower.
Yay Walmart! great offering how about some ebike upgrades too!
I saw a Schwinn Axum Comp (non-X) at Waknart in person a few days ago!
I made a stupid typo and I can't edit it because that would take away the heart
I thought the external cable routing was great on my Axum DP until I added a motor and battery to it. The little cable channels on the downtube get in the way of the battery mount. I managed to secure it but the bumps sort of deform the mount so the battery is a tight fit when sliding in.
Thanks for sharing
Walmart really showing us some good stuff this year aye.đ
30-46 is a nice low gear.
I dont mind external routing but its kinda messy on that bike.
I would like to ride this just to see what its like. Its seems way better than the beginner mtbs from 34 years ago when I started riding.
Hi i think it would look better if the cables where hidden tight underneath the frame. the frame does look nice but it does seem small with the triangle not wide but narrow. about the cardboard in the wheels some companies do jobs cycling where you get banners and advertise on your bike when riding. so example you can get a disk and advertise example a company as you ride normally. i seen it on sites when looking around but its in US and A country i see it for.
when i first saw this bike at wally world, i thought it was an AL Comp. my bad. but I converted my 27.5 AL Comp into a one by with an advent x for about what this new one costs....
At this point what is there left to ask for? Thru axles?
Close, but no cigar.... Really needs hydraulic brakes and/or a dual routing options. Even if it required a slightly higher price point. (FWIW I could think about a half a dozen ways to make the external routing neater)
I would prefer is all external.
It may be harder for critics to scoff at Big Box bikes these days.
That's the first Schwinn that I've ever seen that I would genuinely recommend to a beginner mountain biker
you know we've had the axum and axum dp since 2020 right?
what's the rear o.l.d.? finding 141 wheels or having to get a 148 hub wheel and then finding caps to convert to qr can get pricy
Ebay has a Magnetic string that you push through the frame tube for like 7 8 dollars.
This or tge ozark trail ridge v2? Mine came with microshift clutched rear derailleur
Need to test these on something other than an XC trail.
Why? That's what this bike is for.
This is continued improvement. It's like they're trying to at least keep up with the Ozark Trail. I'm not in the market for another budget MTB, but if I was this would certainly be a contender. I do really hate that Schwinn suspension fork. I hated it on the old Axum and I hated it on the Taff Comp. I would have like to see that same Suntour we see on the Ozark Trail and pretty much every entry level hardtail sold by bike shop brands.
I'm perfectly happy with external cable routing and have always found it to be a bit of a gimmick (excepting dropper cables) and more trouble/unnecessary expense than it's worth.
manual lock schwinn branded fork> XCT non locking fork. though neither can actually use their claimed travel range
Dropper post on a Walmart bike??? That's wild!
Nice
Does anyone know if the 18in frame is big enough for a 6'1 rider or if they'll make larger frames in the future?
I don't know anything about bikes but I like the old look better than this one. Are you able to say that this one is better or it's just a new look, like a refresh
That frame looks really good, but the cable management looks terrible. Needs to be underneath the top tube perhaps? Just looks kind of odd. But the bike looks sharp for sure.
Great review, this bike seems promising.
Slightly off topic: What shoes are you wearing?
Those are some cheap And1 shoes I got at Walmart a while back. It turns out they make great MTB shoes
đ
Ps the ozark trail ridge comes now with same rear derailleur but it's on a 9 speed I'm having issues getting it dialed in
What issues are you having?
@TivonSanders 9 just sometimes makes a chunking noise under load. I think it is because the microshift is a 8 speed deralier but it's what came stock on my ozark trail may upgrade to the advent
Add an air fork, MT200 brakes and better pedals and you have a bike better than a similarly priced Trek Marlin. They donât even have a tapered head tube.
Will you be reviewing the sport?
Yep
Friggn crap! Microshift! The 10 speed setup that come on my new GT Zaskar FS crapped out in a week and a half! The clutch would click on when i had it off during a ride.
Btw. I broke the Verb Sport I had. GT sent me the Zaskar for warranty. đ It's a tank! Kev. I want your 2017 Mongoose Salvo frame?Âż?? I miss my Verb! Same frame!. đą
I like exterior routings. Easier. Why is internal so important?
It's just that they're quieter and gives a cleaner look for the bike. Also there's no risk of any cables rubbing against the paint, which can remove it pretty quickly.
Rear drop outs are? 141mm?
Wait for it....
I really like the styling and the color of the bike, but that external cable routing like that, totally ruins the look.
The question is, how does it compare to Axum DP? Worth the upgrade from Axum DP?
If you already have an Axum DP I donât see a reason to swap to this
Hey that was my question!
@@KevCentral or a non dp. just grab an off the shelf dropper*
It looks good will i be buying it no my polygon is fine
Can relate. I upgraded from the old axum dp to an xtrada 7
Pass
Is this still using the cup and cone BB? Sure looks like it. The OG axum tires were Chao Yang too. And I don't see the reason to run the shifter cable internally, for like 2 feet. I must say, the price point is getting kinda high. I am in no rush to get this one. I think for a few hundreds more, I rather get a FS from other companies like polygon or giant...
Thanks for commenting
for a few hundred more, you might get the D5 on sale? i wouldnt. not when you can get the xtrada 7 around a thousand usd on any given week.
I feel like we are getting very close to Walmart offering a sub 1K hardtail with all modern standards.
Maybe, but I hope they donât venture that far up the price range
Did i miss how many speeds this is?
8
@KevCentral that's one of my disappointments, wishes these bikes could come with 10, but always something.
Is that front sprocket a narrow wide design?
You must be from Arkansas.
Bama baby
Freewheel or Freehub?
Listen to him Acolyte cassette 4:19
Not bad but external routing and the price is still to high
Axum dp around $500...shouldve made some improvements for this price...maybe a 1x10...id rather get the giordano intrepid for a bit higher
I routed internal hydraulic brake lines with nothing but some thread, a shop-vac, and some old brake cable w/ electrical tape. There's no reason it should require a trip to a bike shop.
The time it takes a novice to do it the first time they will lose fluid which will then require adding and bleeding the lines
@@KevCentral that's a good point. I did bleed the lines. Whether that was necessary is unknown. I'd never even installed hydraulic brakes before, but it was something I knew I was going to do, so I had a bleed kit and fluid on hand ready to go.
Full disclosure, i have no bikes with internal routing. However a lifetime of ugly, against the inconvenience of repacement install hassle, guess what side of the equation i fall on. At least until I actually replace internal. lol
Great review as always. Schwinn was killing it the past couple of years butâŠThe design of this new frame is horrible. And the price is way too high. You can get a better equipped polygon for cheaper. Especially with how low all bike prices are during the bikepocalypse
Thanks for commenting
35 pounds ?
schwinn does alot of good things these days. but the axum has always been a beefy boy. the stock dp at 30psi was a hair under 38 pounds on large
And then nothing n like this in Walmart Canada
2.6" getting really close to fat tire territory
On the edge of plus size. On paper it might look close, but Fat is considerably larger
And not a fan of external cable routing , it looks ugly and in my honest opinion it is mire than likely cheaper for schwinn to use external routing , rather than full internal cable routing
Not a huge fan. For the cost of needed upgrades weâd be better off with a Trek right out of the box.
Thanks for commenting
@@KevCentral thanks for always cranking out awesome content
Not terribly impressed for the money, but I'm thinking the OT Ridge is a better buy, even with no dropper.
I like the Acolyte, the frame looks nice, and yes the dropper is great! However, the junky pressed steel hubs, QR or not, are just a big no.
I am really impressed with my most recent find, a Decathlon Rockrider 530S. 120mm travel front and rear full suspension, MT200 hydros, Advent 1x9, and tubeless ready rims. How much? $216! There's even a way to get 10% off that price. I've got a couple videos up on it, but I want to see someone else do a decent review of it.
The OT Ridge is still hard to beat for the price point.
Makes no sense that they don't have internal AND external routing so you can choose whichever you want. It doesn't cost any extra.
Looks like Diamondback Overdrive 29 1, and costs more than Diamondback which is always on sale for less than $500 shipped. For $100 more you can get Canyon 5 MTB in all the sizes and Shimano 10-51T. Unfortunately $548 is way too much in 2024 for this Schwinn with ultra heavy Schwinn coil fork. bottom barrel $3 brakes and no-name wire tires. DP is welcomed, but to be an OK deal it should be priced $399 or less. $350 on sale is the right price for this bike
