Oh, and adding that it would seem an easy choice/verdict to rate the Axum Comp X easily worth the extra $100 with the dropper and better drivetrain. It'd cost more than that to add just a fresh derailleur and dropper.
Agreed, I’d rather pay the hundred dollars
Not me I wanted the cheapest bike I could get because I was gonna upgrade it no matter what so don’t matter what it came with wanted the ozark trail but I ordered it and they said it was out of stock even though it said in stock and they wouldn’t ship it to me only 30 mins away from the store
@@danemoreno88 Unless you've already got a dropper or don't want one at all, the X model Axum is truly the better buy, even stripping most other things off, as even cheap droppers are around $80 to start with. I typically strip most of my bikes and fully rebuild them, that's how I've always made videos on my own channel, showing the builds! So I do understand the mentality, but I'd really just spend the extra on the X.
@@MongooseJake I actually canceled the order because I found a Ozark trail in stock closer to me
@@danemoreno88 The OZ Ridge is a heck of a buy, was showing my wife the difference between this and it and personally for either a build or just a buy and ride I'd go with the Ozark Trail Ridge over this anytime. Plan to get one myself this summer after I finish a couple of builds I've got going right now on my channel.
Awesome video! Cool that your walmart carries all these lol
Only $100 extra for a dropper and microshift drive train… that’s crazy good value
No other Walmart bike brand goes out of their way to make quality bikes like Schwinn.
@@dannyphantom121Ozark trail ridge would like a word
Love it! I have an Axum. Great bike for the money. When I was younger I had a Trek VRX 400, Santa Cruz Hecklers and Bullits, now that I’m older I don’t need anything that aggressive.
G'day Kev, great bike. There's only a few things I'd change, mainly the external cable routing, I think it makes the bike look cheap and messy, plus my OCD would make me route it internally.
I'd prefer internal cable routing, I'd change the drivetrain to a Microshift Advent 1x12 or a Shimano drivetrain.
If I couldn't replace the whole drivetrain, I'd buy a narrow wide chainring + chain and a chain guide.
Love this color! Really impressed with the way Schwinn built the frame too. That beefy yoke that connects the bottom bracket to the chain stays really reduces frame flex. The older Axum had it too but its something usually only seen on higher end frames due to an added cost. Kudos!
Beautiful MTB, thanks for the review. I'm sharing this because I wanted a MTB like this back in 2020-2021... WoW
This is the exact same bike I saw at Walmart a few days ago. I like the color, but the curved top tube looks kinda funky. If they had kept it straight, it would've been perfectly in line with the seatstays.
It’s made for little people.
I'd definitely go for the higher spec one, but your right about that colour, it,s "gorgeous"!
I love the paint job ❤..I had the original axum and it was great..I would go with the green one..schwinn still makes good bikes ❤
I'd love to see a video roundup covering all the bikes between this and the Hyper Carbon on the Walmart website. If there is one person that can expand on the advantages and values of each bike it's KevCentral!!! Seems like a good spring walmart buyers guide roundup would be a good helpful video.
Very nice. I like the paint job 😁. Like a metal flake.
Nice job Schwinn 👍
Good looking bike
That's a nice bike for the cash. Easy upgrades to get it where you want if you can't spring the extra 100 for the CompX. Personally I'd go for the CompX for just a little more.
I hear some interesting bird calls, much different than San Diego wildlife. Thanks for sharing the Axum models. The green one looks sharp imo.
+ ❤️ the Black Gold paint job, reminds me of my Black Axum. 😥 Sadly (-) 8 speed AXE derailleur is a 💔 breaker. I had it on my old Axum, it would chain drop constantly. Too bad, this doesn't have a 8 Speed Microshift Acrolyte. (x) has acolyte but lack this gorgeous Black-Gold paint job
These new Axums are ok. Big picture only difference is frame shape, maybe geometry (which wasn’t mentioned yet) & the drivetrain upgrade. I see the direction schwinn went with, VALUE!! It’s definitely there but really can’t beat the Original Axum in my opinion. On the Original Axum it was more budget knowing that you were going to upgrade the bike to make it your own. If you can find an Original Axum, snatch it up. I’m just saying.😎
Agreed...GEORGIOUS.!
I just walked past a beautiful green 2024 axum sport at my local WM. It had a clutched derailleur and dropper port hole. Hope to see a video on how it stacks up. $348 I think
The Axum Comp X dropper and drivetrain upgrade is well worth the 100 dollars. The fork on both bikes sure looks like a Suntour XCM coil fork knockoff. Remember when the best bikes like this had forks with welded on dropouts? Pretty cool to see the lowers and the dropouts are all cast in one piece now. Both of these bikes are pretty good deals, but the Comp X is the way to go. The Acolyte drivetrain is excellent!
Man, three great videos in a week. That new Axum looks like allot of bike for the price. Not sure which way I would go in this price range. The Axum, Ozark trail or Posieidon Norton. Definitely think the X is the better deal of the two Axums. Great time for the hobbie, if not the industry.
Would be nice to see it in a 10 speed . 2.6 tires are just to heavy forva 8 speed going uphill. 2.3 is plenty wide enough . Would like to see rims be tubeless ready . Its such a asset for flat protection. Where i live in the high desert i could not ride a tube without getting constant flats . Of course hydraulic brakes are such a bonus for safety and just makes the ride experience so much better. I think Walmart can affordably add hydraulic brakes but they probably dont want the mess of installing them . I think tube less ready rims would be a munimal cost . They could come wity a tube and the owner can convert . Its a decent bike for the price but it can be better with just some minimal cost upgrades
Jagwire cables??? That’s good stuff!
Cicadapocalips. I like it 😅
Seems like to different variations and design, the long valve for the tire balloon 🎈 is maybe 48mm or 60mm.
Hi Kev! Please consider reviewing the new Mongoose Switchback Expert from Dick's Sporting Goods. Yes, I said Mongoose from Dick's Sporting Goods. Thanks
Ngl, i like the gritty paint look of this one.
Its a big upgrade but the Polygon Xtrada 5 comes with hydraulic brakes, 2x10 deore drivetrain and thru axles for $600.
I clear coated the old schwinn axum. Really made the gold flake pop quite a bit.
The "big box bikes" have gotten so good that even die hard LBS only riders have to be taking some pause and thinking twice.
These are plenty good that someone new to riding could grab the Axum Comp X or Ozark Trail Ridge, get a professional tune up at the local shop if they're not wrench capable and get riding on the cheap. $400-$550 plus helmet, hydro pack, and just some basic athletic clothes gets you riding and enjoying trails under the typical price of a basic quote "beginner" bike from just a few years ago.
Hey Kev. I think a lot of us would appreciate a "top 5ish best 2024 mtb for the $" greatly appreciated your content. Thank you sir
Do you know if this or the X version is going to come in small or just grab the Ozark Trail Vibe (new version with black calipers) in small?
I got my old comp all set up and then this happens 😂 im tempted. But not in a rush. I love the green but those Schwinn graphics aren't it. Other than that it looks awesome
Looks nice ...your videos are probably letting them know what to do... and other reviewers come to about the same conclusion verifying each other. I would get the comp and buy my own dropper probably. And other other small upgrades.
Nice bikes, but I feel like the OG Axum models were better/nicer looking?
Are the rims tubeless compatible?
Anybody know when the new Ozark Trail is coming out?
The metalflake reminds me of my Boundary..
I just need the X in this black color. Why do they make us choose?!?!
This channel was better before being sponsored
I ride an axum dp I don't like paying a lot for bikes have you ever seen a Walmart bike with through axels
Anybody out there know the weight of the bare frame?
Are you also getting the emerald green Axum Sport?
Have one. It’s in the lineup if upcoming reviews
5 more bikes? This is gonna be a busy week...
i’d rather get a trek gen 7 im taking the Axum comp cant handle roughness.
Would eat. Could be served with biscuits or rice. Wait, wrong video.
I work at Walmart and my OGP department is right behind the bucycle section so I pass by like hundreds of times a day. Our Walmart doesn't have this one yet but I went to another one today and they had 3 of them. Interestingly though, they were all returned and 1 of them was on discount for $378. It looked like it was driven once, with it just being dirty. But it's not like a car where you may have major issues getting it used, everything is mechanical and pretty easy to fix yourself.
“OGP”? “Bucycle”? Are these special CODE words that only the Walmart folks can understand? Apparently. 😅
Oddly enough I saw one this color awhile back when I went to investigate the Axum.
I didn’t like the geometry fit or the color.
The upgraded red one was also there.
It seemed to fit me just fine.
Dimensionally they are the same bike.
I’m a function before style guy.
But at least in the store lighting, the color of this genuinely made it “feel” wrong 🤦🏻
I’m glad that someone likes it.
But maybe a red one for me…….
Now that sparkly blue Junction 🤔
One major failt you forgot to mention is using shift cables for brakes. As shift cables are much thinner and not designed to withstand braking force. This could potentially lead to a nasty crash. And any owner should replace them asap.
I guess they tried to use compressionless jagwire cables everywhere. But brake cables were too expensive.
Good luck with selling it at $448, their own Ozark Trail Ridge is $398, made in Taiwan, has much better frame, a branded Suntour XCT30 fork and 9 speed. Schwinn wants to be Trek or Canyon, but it is not. $350 is the max price you want to pay for this bike
Schwinn is killing it with the colorways but these frames designs and external cable routing is horrible. They are definitely missing the mark so far on the 2024 lineup.
External cable routing comes in handy for just tossing on pre bled hydraulic brakes, no need to disconnect and re-bleed.
Only problem I have with it is it's made in China.
