I can't believe you figured this out. Same exact symptoms when cold and under load. I really notice it when I'm in a drive-through. I noticed that when I start it up and it rattles that if I give it gas until about 3k RPM real quick it will quiet down. I'm assuming because of the way the trucks run rich at start up. I had my passenger side turbo replaced at 12k miles and it still made the same noise (at 25k now) so I never fussed with it again. I notice it on almost every truck I see when it starts. I've literally turned my head and said, "bet that's a new F150". Yet Ford doesn't know anything about this, and it seems most people somehow don't notice it, even when I ask them directly about it they seem surprised but I guarantee if I went and started their truck and pointed it out they would never un-hear it.
Thank you very much for the great report! Now is the first time ever I "see" the chattering noise! Just lately I found my 18 Expedition made small chattering noises at cold start, it was the same exact "cha-cha" sounds I heard in your video at 2:13-14 and 2:32-33. I see the green-painted parts is shifting slightly at the timing of the noise. Before seeing this, I was wondering if something rotating at fast speed is touching other metal parts to cause the noise. So this is a big relief to me, it seems a very minor issue. It may not even be labeled as an "issue", because the parts is not beating hard or grinding, and making the small noise does not affect much to the parts itself and the housing surface it touches.
That's why my F150 is going to have a Coyote 5.0. The fix from sloppy linkage from Ford is $2000 to replace a $2 part. If it's rattling and it is under warranty. Get it in and make them pay for it. Even if it's a little rattle complain until they replace it. Absolutely crazy design. Needs to be loose fitting to work. But it is un lubed. So you have two pieces of un lubed metal vibrating against each other, This vibration transmits into the wastegate flapper that is also loose-fitting, wearing that out. then you get a rattle on deceleration. Boom $2000 because you cant just replace the linkage and the flapper assembly. You have to replace the whole Turbo.
the wast gate makes a click noise when fully opening. the rattle you hear it the fuel injectors. They are under a ton to psi in a direct injected motor. My 2006 mazdaspeed 6 inline 4 DI turbo sounds the same way (ford ecoboost predecessor ) start it and hold that linkage down .
Ford replaced my driver side turbo for this, and the new one is doing it even louder 6k miles later. Tech tried to tell me they couldn’t replicate issue. I met the tech and showed him, and he tried to tell me it’s a normal noise. I told him there’s nothing normal about any annoying rattle on startup and boost on a $54k truck. I refused to take my truck till they look at it again, and that was 6 days ago. Haven’t heard anything back yet.
They replaced the turbo. So I’m on my third driver side turbo. It also rattles, however, it’s not loud yet. The 2nd was so bad it would buzz under boost. If you do some research on the design of this turbo, the linkage and wastegate is designed for failure. This is a design flaw of the turbo manufacturer. I still have my truck. I’ve been suing Ford over it for like 1.5 years now. Nothing but problems.
@@countryboy9546 Thanks for the reply! My 2018 also rattles upon cold start. The waste gate rattle lasts about 30sec to a minute and then disappears. It also does the cam phaser rattle but not near as bad as I've heard on other trucks. I've just put up with both at this point. I always let the truck warm up for a few minutes before driving it. For as "nice" as these trucks are, they sure have their issues. Oh well, I love mine. Love the look, the spacious room and the Cadillac ride going 85mph.
I've had this issue for quite a while now. I put some high temp RTV dabbed on the pivot points. It's been on about a month. Has definitely helped quiet down.
Shawn Scott, don't second guess on your pre-order. Thus far, these trucks are well-built. Some complacent person on quality assurance wasn't doing their job. All Ford vehicles, particularly the F-series are trial tested prior to getting on a haul-vehicle to its destination. Any rattles or any sounds coming from the vehicle will be checked and fixed right then. I plan on ordering a Ford Raptor in the future, a lightning blue supercrew in the 802a package. Continue with the ordering faze, and make sure you get the package that you desire. The assembly workers should be on their A-game or go find another line of work. My 2 cents, and good luck with your truck.
Thanks. Heads up, lots of my friends and people I know on the forums with this truck are checking and they all so far have the slop in the wastegate actuator. Seems like all teh trucks have this, its likely by design and not broken. I love my truck, dont get me wrong.
Its not isolated. Jump on the Raptor forums bro. The ecoboost has a history of quirks and issues. Several trucks have this wastegate rattle. Ford will not fix it until it breaks something.
The truck is very well built, absolutely fantastic. I've had mine since January. But don't wait for the 2018 if you don't have to, cause it'll have a downgrade in the wheel department. For more info on that check out my latest vid. But by the way, the entire truck is under warranty (I got all three manufacturer warranties for 125k miles), but for something like that, Ford would fix this if it's an actual issue.
I've been talking with Ford Performance and it seems the 2018 won't have the 17in forged wheels, they will become 18in. That means larger moment of inertia (rotational inertia). My latest video covers everything Ford is doing with the Raptor, and I have another update coming soon
Same problem with the Platinum. I saw a video with the same issue but was the base model with the turbos, that guy put some glue on the turbo joint. But I don't know if it is safe. czcams.com/video/hbIyi7ZmK0U/video.html
Damn.. thats all it is.. I can stop obsessing about that sound

I think my 2017 Raptor developed this at 14k. Thanks for the video.

O and don't forget the cam driven fuel pump they are loud also my 2012 f150 eco had a large foam block covering it
This waste gate actuator rattles too. It's a different rattle than the hpfp tick.
Thanks for saving me a trip to the dealer, my work f150 developed this at 21K
Have you noticed any issues since? Mine is doing this and I’m concerned
@@The0n3 It just makes that noise, but make sure you aren't confusing it with another noise.
Mike does the same thing sounds exactly the same. 2017 f150 3.5 ecoboost
2019 navigator 12k mikes getting new turbo already did cam phasers.
I actually got it loaded with the 802 and a few other extras,
No issues resulting from the rattle after a couple years now?
2018 Ford Expedition max - same issue in addition to cam phaser issues and bad seal on water pump - only 46k miles...
I had a 1990 mitsubishi eclipse with a turbo and it didn't have wastegate rattle. What can't Ford get this corrected?
What did you do to fix the problem?
Oh wow keep us posted on fix
Did ford find a fix for this noise?
Spray them with penetrating oil good to go for a few months. Took move to Ford they said it’s not broke so can’t fix under warranty.
18 Platinum, does same thing but no slack at all fully warmed up...….

Your truck still at the dealership, sold or at home?
How did that go? Waste-gate rattle is normal. While I agree, it's annoying on a high-end $70K truck but it's completely harmless!

I almost sold my piece of shit, Raptor yesterday and the guy said fuck no after hearing the freaking noise
Does it rattle when acclerating??
Wow! Appreciate it brother! have been dying to figure this out! Same exact thing 2018 F150. ANY FIXES CZcamsRS? Thanks

What air temp are you at? Have not had this rattle this loud with mine but it's been warm here
I live in texas.
Damn!!!... 2017 Raptor and it’s already having wastegate rattle !?!? That’s incredibly sad 🤦♂️
My 2005 silverado dosent have a rattle but it shakes a lot but has plany of power move almost a yard of masonry sand and makes burn outs

Claude Ervin you have no clue about automotive manufacturing!
Just got a turbo replaced on my 2017 f150 2.7 at 11.5k miles for this same issue.

Look at Ford TSB 20-2016.

Wouldn't have these issues with a supercharged 5.2 V8!
Yea go look at mustang forums, that engine is a pile of shit, the wastegate rattle isn’t a problem, just an annoying noise.
My Toyota Tundra has no rattle 🤔
It happens randomly to any turbocharged car, no matter the mileage its just random
It's also a Toyota Tundra, so....
Yeah your toyota tundra gets like 8mpg and will get smoked by an EB with a rattling noise 😀😀
Zip tie it 😂😂😂😂
This is crazy ford should not have been giving us shit turbo
sound like injector noise
It's probably caused by the pink stickers on your truck.....
Those are Ford Performance red stickers. Thanks though
