You perfectly explained why I don't like P$G. A team with no identity and no understanding of football. I'm a Barça fan but I respect Real Madrid. They've always been a team of warriors who would die for their badge. PSG took the Galácticos part of Real Madrid and turned it up to 11. They have no core values as a club, they abandoned many of their young players who go on to leave like Coman and Nkuku. Xavi Simmons is not getting the proper guidance he needs as a young 18 year old. As a Barça fan I've seen first hand how bad a team could fall when they abandon their core values. Clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern and Barça were the perfect examples of teams who dominated Europe with their values and most importantly the love for their badge.

As a Madrid fan, this was probably the best feeling I’ve felt with this team for a while. Sure we’ve been fairly consistent in the league and we have a good advantage and chance of winning it, but in the champions league we haven’t seen those epic comebacks in the Bernabéu since Ronaldo left. It’s so refreshing to see this. Even in the league we haven’t had crazy comebacks. I hope that Mbappe comes to Madrid this summer. And I’m happy that this proves that money doesn’t buy titles. Heart, dedication, and faith is what gets you there. I’m so happy and I hope that we can make it to the final this year and prove everyone wrong. In my opinion, Donnarruma, via a clumsy touch, pretty much lost control of the ball and went down far to easy for a man of his size and strength. Real Madrid revealed their strength of character. Real’s comeback was a magical moment in the rich history of Champions League. I look forward to Mbappe wearing the white of Real Madrid !!!

Great video Adrian, spot on with your assessments as usual. If I may comment on the phrase you mentioned on the outro though, I believe that this result brings the club at a crossroads; letting this become the beginning of their downfall, spiraling into a cash throwing frenzy yet again, or to try to start with a clean slate and revise their approach, find a clear sporting project that has more to do with the football on the pitch rather than the marketing and invest in youth. It will no doubtedly be a monumental task if they take that route, but one thing is for certain, things at the club cannot remain the same. Regards from Mexico!

PSG needs a project spanning over 6-8 years where they build the homegrown talent that is raised by watching these icons they have right now. Keep only a few of these big names, and revolve your game around 1 star if that's what they need for business. There are no shortcuts in life generally and achievement by shortcuts don't last long.
Man city is actually a good example, they have built their identity first, trophies will follow.

A few reasons for PSG inability to win the UCL in my opinion:
    1. They lack vision and a plan. Man City expends a lot of money but they have an idea, a plan. PSG looks like Man Utd, they buy a couple of big players every season but don't have an idea of what to do with them.
    2. Pochettino may be a good coach but he's nowhere near the level of Guardiola, Klopp, Tuchel (the irony!) or even Neggelsman, Ancelotti or Conte. He's good but still needs to prove he's world class and capable of dealing with all those stars.
    3. They need to build a core of 4 or 5 players completely dedicated to the club. References. Players with character that don't pass the idea they're just there for the money.
    4. They lack internal competition. Real, Man City, Liverpool, even Inter or Juve have to face tough opponents regularly which builds up their competitive streak. PSG usually either don't care and get complacent or steam roll most of their internal opposition. The only other club I see in that position is Bayern but since they don fail on the 3 previous points I mentioned, they get a pass.

      @LaughterCigar Před 2 lety +6

I mean, it's a valid argument that the goals came from lucky chances (although I wouldn't necessarily think so about the 2nd goal... it was a deflection, yes, but the kind that often happens when a player shoots from inside the penalty area, and you could tell Benzema would have scored it anyway from where he was trying to place the ball, and Donnarumma had already chosen the wrong direction... also it was a good attacking play by Madrid.). However, lucky chances are often easily missed too, or not taken at all. It takes skill, intelligence and composure to be there at the right time and put the ball in, or to force an error from your rival and make them pay for it. Benzema is not the most intense presser in the game, but he has still scored a decent amount of goals like his first one yesterday, by forcing errors from the keeper or the defenders, because he has exceptional football IQ and space awareness, and is great at recognising opportunity.

  • @hkmarhk
    @hkmarhk Před 2 lety +2

Adrian, I mostly agree with your analysis on PSG. But I think when you evaluate the PSG project, you have to look at it from the business perspective. What they are doing is exactly the same as what Real did during the Galacticos era. They are signing big names, who may not be a fit to the team, not to make the team better, but to generate excitement about the club. Their main goal is to grow the PSG brand; winning the UCL is more like a nice-to-have and a means to the goal of increasing PSG popularity.
I am not saying their way of building the club is right, but from a football fan perspective, who wouldn't want to follow a club with big signings after big signings. Well, they might not be able to win the UCL, but at least we get to see some cool drone footages of Messi and nice football jerseys from them.

And Nasser/Leonardo have made their aim clear: win the Champions League, proof of which comes with managers not lasting very long after failing to do so. They won't win in this manner, which is what I was saying. They need time to do that, they need to take a more holistic approach, because going all in and constantly resetting doesn't work.

Ney is a great player but he's not obsessed w/ the game and if you give him too much power you really take out the coaching staff at the knees. if he were Cruyff or even a young Messi that'd be one thing but he's not. his priorities are split on and off the field which is good for him as human being but not good for a footballing project lead. When they fired Tuchel after a very successful year, instead of giving him time to do the last adjustments, they were more or less done imho. Every new coach has to start to same degree at square one: get to know the team, synchronize his ideas with the one of the club and the team, shaping it to his ideas how to play - what might also include to release some players and to sign others; a small re-build phase so to speak.
This all needs time, but if a coach gets fire after one or two season, no coach will be able to do his part of the job. And thus the team has the star power, but no idea or direction.
It's like Russia in the Ukraine where the one branch (airforce) is unwilling or unable to connect and to coordinate their efforts with the other branch (the army).
A coach works out different tactical and strategic approaches and options to various situations and or teams. This needs time: to lern the "play book", and the to execute it as a group with different tactical units: defense, midfield, offense. You have to practice this stuff, which again will need time.
The entire job of the coach seems to be considered as non essential for the management seem to have the idea that 11 super stars will do the job on their own, that their individual class will be enough. But when facing veteran teams like Bayern or that club from Liverpool (not Everton) which have this skill set, the experience and the direction, they will fail over and over again.
I guess they would be better off with a specifically designed AI as coach. Maybe also adding a drill instructor like Hartman for the discipline.

Messi never seemed invested in this team, Neymar has been wanting out since day one after the dream of being the star of the show faided with the arrival of mbappe. Mbappe is such a talent but we all know that deep down he knows that madrid is his next destination. PSG was becoming a concrete team when Tuchel was the manager.
Ever since PARIS got defeated in the final, they start breaking apart; each player gradually became more selfish just like it was before.
It’s time to restructure the whole team with more young, eager, and hungry academy talents in order to bring intensity back to the game.
Superstars may bring the skill-wise improvements to the team, yet never heighten the team spirit.
I hope that the board members will realize the problems and get god of Leonardo and Pochettino to revitalize the team.

At this point we have to agree that out of all the current footballing superstars messi is the biggest choker.

Exactly what I’ve been saying. This is officially the start of PSG downfall. I can see them blowing up this whole team

Too harsh on being the downfall of PSG. PSG needs this to understand you cannot just assemble names without having a plan for it to work. The club needs stability like City & Chelsea after takeover. A competent sporting director that isn’t hated by everyone like Leonardo, a coach they’ll give more power to & a different approach to recruiting. Enough w the big names on record transfer fees, focus on recruiting in France, & make smart purchases to give team equilibrium. With time, they can have a great team w chemistry.

Something to add on here.... PSG are playing in a league where they are not challenged enough. Look at LaLiga, Premier League etc. The top clubs in those leagues have challengers who put them to the test. Whereas Ligue 1 is only ever dominated by PSG in the last 10 years. Real, City, Liverpool and heck even Bayern have challengers in their leagues who test their limits abd resilience. PSG has NONE

Don't forget they didn't win the Ligue 1 title last season and they've had 5 draws and 3 losses in 27 matches this season whereas Bayern has 2 draws and 4 losses in 25 matches. They might dominate the league, but it isn't as easy as everyone thinks. Heck, Messi has scored just 2 goals in 17 matches. He's scored more in the Champions League.

I was having this exact conversation with a friend of mine, PSG buys and buys without undetstanding how football works, better players doesn't mean the better team, for a squad to trully work, you need chemestry, PSG squad changes soo much year to year that players can't get chemestry, and they don't have a club legend in their squad, or someone that has been there for a while, the closest thing was Thiago Silva, and they sold him, and they buy acording to name, as much as i love Ramos he was brought in because of his name, his injury issues were well known at the time, Winaldum( i probably wrote it wrong im sorry) was the same, they got him because they could, but were would he fit in the squad? The other problem is the fame chasing, i'm positive poch knows that messi shoudn't be played on the RW, but having MNM is such a marketing wet dream that he is forced to do that, messi is 34, put him in the midfield ffs, he still has his passing intact

Messi's stats in Ligue 1 this year would actually be very acceptable if he had been playing as a CM or CAM this whole time. Double digit assists, a few goals, somebody who reads the game almost as well as anyone ever has. Yeah, checks out. Problem is, he's a winger, and wingers are expected to assist AND score goals. Also, you only forgot a j in Wijnaldum's last name.

you know what, I think this could be potentially liberating for PSG
no Qatar WC, no expectations, atleast to that level
build a core team of French Players who would bring the club its first solid core in years.
the Mendes and Hakimis have enough talent to be the top of Europe

To me, the real shame is that things could've been so different had PSG focused on talent that was already there. The players that have passed through the PSG academy over the years include some top class talents: Nkunku, Diaby, Maignan, Nianzou, Zagadou, ... Had they given those lads a proper chance alongside some good buys like Verratti and Mbappé maybe there'd be more of a fighting spirit.

Being a fan of Neymar and thus PSG I agree with everything you said. No matter what happens we ALWAYS feel like a collection of individuals rather than a team. That changed for a brief moment in 2020 where everyone played for one another and we made it to the final! I guess I was foolish for thinking that spirit would continue. It hurts to see honestly and I don't know where we go from here.
