thank you for the advice on saving small, specific and curated selections of style inspiration images! I've been saving tons of images on pinterest for many years and also many more specific sections in my style exploration board but I hadn't actually done it in a way as simultaneously curated and narrowed down as you mention here. I took some time over a couple weeks to create a list of style areas and ideas I love and wanted to focus on and collect my favorites for and created a couple handfuls of sections for style elements such as contrasting materials, silhouette inspiration, use of color, monochromatic outfits, and specific color season tones, and it really gave me such satisfaction and more clarification after having organized and explored it more systematically! it is so nice to now refer back and look at these curated sections and be able to pinpoint very specific style ideas I've loved for some time and which I can work on more easily now. this exercise was needed :)

This was SO helpful, thank you Rita! 💖I have three keywords which each of my outfits need to match for me to feel amazing. I've had these in my style notes I keep for a while, but I've been a bit stuck with the execution part. I did the exercise for each keyword and this has been absolutely eye opening.. suddenly everything fell into place. Now I know why certain items I have just don't work. I got so excited I went through my whole closet with the notes 😅I found that for me personally each item needs to match two of the three keywords I have in order to work for a top-tier outfit, and to qualify as a match, it needs to have a quality/qualities from at least two of the six categories under each keyword. All my favorite pieces had this in common. Even found two to match all three keywords 😌This was just what I needed, and I love analyzing anything style related, so big thanks!!

loved the video! very nice general concept and step by step walkthrough of the application. I am wondering if this is the approach you suggest for both Right and Left quadrants? I think creating our personal style vocabulary is awesome and don't see why it shouldn't work for both, but I do wonder if Right people might find it easier to draw on things people tend to wear in x situation to define y word, and if so when that's productive or counterproductive

What a great question ❤️ for me the big difference is in up/down where it's helpful for the up essence to think about the impression (what creates an effect of elegance) versus for the down essence thinking about their experience (what gives them the feeling of elegance)

If you don't have it in mind already, I suggest to also check the items with the body type. Something that looks elegant on someone else can look completely off on my body. Same for colors. I do love bright pastel colors on other people, but they don't look good on me.

Love this tool! I think lots of people struggle with this step and actively analysing would work great. I'm only thinking of one struggle that I can't get rid of in my head. Its the other style systems that we all know, like kibbe or kitchener. Let's say there's this girl with a D body type and she wants to incorporate elegance in her style. We all know that dramatics thrive in very elongated narrow silhouettes that are structured in fabric. What if she thinks that draped satin-y flowy fabrics with waist emphasis are elegant? recs that are for a yin type. So she tries them on to try and feel elegant and to communicate elegance in the way she dresses. According to kibbe, those yin fabrics and lines on a D would probably make you look like you're trying too hard and not make you look elegant at all. What then? then you might feel elegant, but to others it looks like the style you chose is really aging you, matronly even. Or this D might look like she's wearing doll's clothes if the fabrics are too delicate and in contract this D girl might look super angular and edgy. Not elegant. And then this D girl might feel bad, because she thought she dressed super elegant, but not understanding what she did wrong. I understand the power of feeling and that such a feeling can translate in behaviour and just being able to shine and come across as a characteristic just because you feel a certain way. I also understand that this tool starts with something concrete that already makes you feel elegant, so my example is a bit extreme and not entirely correct. However, I also think that taking into concideration what effect a certain kibbe ID or kitchener essence has on what clothing looks like on you is also important, or else you might fail in what you're trying to feel, right? I'm not trying to discredit your tool, because I think it could work really well, but I can't see it seperately from the other systems. I really like the idea of working out what you love first and taking your personality as a starting point, but I also kinda think that the other systems do have an effect to take into concideration after that... what are your thoughts on this? love to know! because I'm sure you've thought about this as well :)

thank you so much for this long and thoughtful comment!
I think other style systems can be really useful! I have a long post about this on my Instagram if you're interested! If you can't envision how to separate your preferences from the rules of other style systems the R+U quadrant probably helps you the most.
But for many other people style systems are not really effective. Trying to understand what Kibbe tells you to wear and then trying to buy stuff that suits your Kibbe type for many people just leads them to waste time and money, lose touch with their own preferences, and end up in clothes they don't even like. It's too much effort and not enough reward. And for very many of these people, "feeling" elegant is more important for their happiness and enjoyment of style than whether an online expert would deem them "elegant looking."
Also, even if you ARE helped by the Kibbe or Kitchener approach, you need to remember that their recommendations are very diverse. Like Kibbe says, the Image ID is like a city with many neighborhoods. I've seen him pick out a cropped length furry bolero jacket with rounded edges and lapels and a polka dot print for a Dramatic client. I guarantee you nobody on CZcams or Kibbe reddit would tell a Dramatic woman to wear that. Because Kibbe doesn't have strict guidelines. So the Kibbe/Kitchener approach can give you some starting points but at the end of the day it still comes back to who you are as a person, YOUR individual body, YOUR taste, YOUR circumstances and your life.
Finally, I think people can make good style decisions without style systems. If you follow the approach of identifying what things seem "cool" to you, you might come up with "bright colors, funky patterns, intriguing shapes". Then you might try on bright colors and realize "no, actually bright colors don't feel "cool" on me, it looks overwhelming, instead I am going to try darker colors." Those are conclusions you can draw on your own. And you could connect these conclusions to a "seasonal color" approach (if that's easier for you) but you don't have to (if that's easier for you)

@@StyleThoughtsbyRita thanks for your elaborate reply! Its not that I feel like I have to follow what some random internet dude tells me at all, most of the time I am the one telling people not to take him so seriously, thinking more in terms of spectrum and how kibbe can help you grow instead of trying to fit into a box. So no worries about that. I'm really NOT a RU person haha. Atm I resonate with LU. Trying to communicate who I am and at the same time making an impact on others, even tho I'm a bit shy still in doing so. Anyway, back to kibbe, I have seen it working in terms of silhouette, so thats why I wondered about your opinion and how it might relate or incorporate and I thought it also might be a useful thought process for others reading through the comments who started with more fixed systems. So thanks again and I think that might be helpful for a lot of people. I'm a teacher, can't help it to discuss 😅 My own thoughts/hypothesis was exactly like your last paragraph, the part where you'll probably start with a look that feels cool on you, so what is cool "conventionally" is less important from the start, anyway, and thus you incorporate whatever is your lines probably anyway. Again, great concept and tool :)

@@Allesea159 I also think your question makes so much sense from L+U perspective bevause your aim is to communicate something with deliberation. So of course if it just *feels* elegant isn't enough because you want it to give off the impression of your choice. And style systems can be super helpful in giving you tools to understand why some things work for you and why some don't 💜

@@StyleThoughtsbyRita interesting, that does make sense! You just summarized in one sentence how I felt and my intention when I wrote my reply. Well done you! I do struggle a bit with the emotion part of the L quadrants, in a way of connecting with my emotions and understanding what it is that I want and am. But then again ratio doesnt bring me further either and I honestly also think thats why I'm struggeling with my personal style as well. So yes, RU could make sense. Yay psychology. I like that you're starting to incorporate more practical psychology and self reflection in this way into your system. It makes it less vague and "spiritual hippie" and really more relatable and approachable and thus valuable for more people. Thanks for the help and the replies again.

This is SUCH a fantastic idea and a really fun way to explore your personal style. My only question is: What are some of the key terms I should start defining? You gave the example of elegance or sensuality which are both great. I know I would greatly benefit by having a beginners list of terms to start defining. Maybe 10 or 15 key terms that would round out a closet in terms of functionality. Maybe this is something you offer more individually in your analysis sessions but unfortunately I haven't had the finances to get one yet.
