Taking personal responsibility for your own health and well-being is the best thing you can possibly do for yourself. It requires bravery and courage. When people are pushing the keto diet on me and telling me that I have to lose weight faster and cut my calories more. When they're telling me that I need to take medications or get a surgery for weight loss. I have to set appropriate boundaries and consequences with people who do not respect me and my health journey. They'll tell you to listen to these scientists but not those these doctors but not those. You listen to what works for you and do it ✝

My mind is blown!!! The weight cycling negative effects make so much sense. This makes me feel so much better about my choice to not diet anymore.

It can feel like you're going against the grain when you decide to stop dieting, but it's the only way to ever get off the merry-go-round.

@@ParallelWellness yeah I am struggling with that urge on and off. Trying to focus on what makes my body feel good and not what weight it is.

Such a good strategy. I just went for a walk in the sunshine and got an ice cream cone - all make my body feel good!

@@ParallelWellness Someone could say "Such a good strategy. I just went for a walk in the sunshine and smoked a cigarette --all make my body fell good!" But there can be a difference between what makes your body feel good and what is good for your body. If you decided to keep on going for a walk in the sunshine every day for a year, there is a good chance that your body will be healthier than if you didn't that. If you decided to smoke 20 cigarettes a day for a year, there's a good chance your body will be unhealthier if you do that.

Yaaas! Preach sister! Something about the way you introduced HAES resonated with me. Paraphrase “when you are engaged in healthy behavior your body will find its own healthy weight/size. I wish I would have known this years ago. I have been pretty active my whole life eg. hiking, teaching dance fitness and weight training. I also eat pretty healthy. I love cooking my own meals, adding lots of veggies and fruit and having variety of proteins, grains and fats yet I have been “obese” through it all. I looked at my thinner friends and thought I was just doing something wrong. Now I realize that I am healthy just as I am. I don’t have to look thin to be and feel healthy and most of all, happy!
Thanks for spreading the good word! ❀

It’s a huge shift in thinking and unfortunately diet culture will have you second-guessing yourself. Only you know what healthful behaviours you engage in and your body size isn’t the identifier.

The best thing you can do I think is to surround yourself with people who are supportive and kind. You will have to deal with doctors and people in general from time to time, but if you can limit that stress and make a safe space for yourself that would be wonderful for you. Having an advocate as well so that you do not have to go this alone, especially at doctor's visits or dealing with friends or family would also be a supportive and beautiful thing. Work at becoming wiser at dealing with people by setting boundaries and executing consequences for people who do not respect your health journey.

It will be interesting to talk about healthy user bias as well and how plays a huge role. The more we belief a certain lifestyle is supporting us, the more our bodies feel safe and maintain homeostasis.

hey great video! So one thing that occurred to me listening is that you compare the HAES approach to 'traditional weight loss approaches' and I would totally agree with this if you mean intentional calorie restriction. I wonder if you could compare HAES to something less conventional like an unrestricted calorie low carbohydrate diet though? I personally did sustain this approach for many years and actually regret not doing it anymore as I am now prediabetic. The only reason I gave up on it was I thought it wasn't working ....not because it was unsustainable. It was working. But I find it hard to go back to only because of the initial grimness giving up carbs. It would be interesting to see if there is any research comparing this approach with HAES. Honestly anything vs an intentionally calorie restricted diet will win....I think most people understand that from experience these days. But I haven't personally found HAES has improved my metabolic dysfunction, and I am many years out from any calorie restriction, eating intuitively for around 4 years now. Thanks!

HAES targets the “other stuff” that impacts our health and encourages you to eat in a way that feels respectful for your body. If you feel like that is low-carb, you can still follow HAES!

Re: the statistics about higher weight and increased illness: Why do we assume that fat is causing the illness, and not that illness causes people to gain weight? If you're depressed, having PTSD, chronically ill, or immobilized, weight gain would be a normal response for most people. Love how we assume it's the other way around...

I can see that if someone who was depressed was eating a lot of junk food as a coping mechanism , that would cause the weight gain but does being depressed in and of itself cause weight gain?

Im genuinely curious if people think its healthy for your body to starve yourself of nutrition for the sake of fat (and in that case muscle) mass, in a totally unsustainable crash diet type thing, only to go back to the former diet/lifestyle that put them in the position to try an extreme diet in the first place, is actually going to make you healthier? Isnt it obvious just to consider calories in terms of how much quantity of good whole foods you should consume in a 24 hour period?

A skinny guy drinks vodka and smokes a pack of cigarettes every day, a fat guy eats way too much whole grain foods potatoes vegetables and natural meats... yea the fat guys probably healthier, but increasing his cardiovascular health by exercising, losing weight to reduce strain on his body and joints, how is this complicated lol
