- We've done so many Mario games what's left to say? Mario is a plumber, he fights Bowser, rescues Princess Peach, and sometimes his brother is there. He does this in 2D and sometimes 3D, which he does in the fantastic game called Super Mario 3D Land! This Mario game has a unique history to it. There was a short timeline to complete the game, so in order to meet that deadline Nintendo outsourced to other developers. And after one of Japan's largest natural disasters, the Nintendo team grew closer together and ended up creating a very special Mario game.

You are completely right about how much video games help you through hard times. I had cancer when I was 7 and no matter how hard my day was I’d always play super Mario 3d land or Galaxy 2 at the end of the day. So even if my mom or anyone else thinks they will “melt my brain” Mario will always have a special place in my heart for keeping me motivated to stay alive to the point where I am now soon having a five years cancer free party.

When i just had my 3ds, i remember playing this game so much, it was so fun, and the secrets levels at the end were just the icing on the cake. I just love this game

Yeah I felt like this game was more underrated than sunshine ( not saying it is or that I really like sunshine) and I always thought that sucked because it’s my favorite Mario game of all time. Glad to know I’m not alone anymore

I think that was the gag, but it doesn't REALLY fit beyond being "Player 2"...? Apart from age, I'd actually say Elvin Gadd or Crygor are probably the closest things the Mario franchise has to Tails.

Volvagia1927 I feel you. E. Gadd and Crygor definitely fill the "quirky engineer" role that tails also has but I was thinking more of the player 2 thing.
In recent years, Tails has become more reliant on Sonic, so... :\
3D Land is probably one of my favorite Mario games, actually.

Super Mario Bros 2? I thought that game was considered the black sheep of Mario because of how different it was to the 2D classics.

I just lost my job to Covid-19 shutting down all my work the last 2 years. I am a Myofacial therapist and all my hard work and schooling with my clients has now been wasted. I’ve been in a rut, but seeing this and how the Nintendo team banded together in times of hardship reminds me that there are more out there in the same boat as me. Thanks completionist :)

Coin Coffers are officially a variant of Moneybags. In other words, Coin Coffers are Moneybags, but Moneybags aren't Coin Coffers.
Also @enemyhelicopters there is no area in Super Mario 64 named just "Snow Mountain". The stage Moneybags appears in is Snowman's Land, which doesn't technically have a mountain, just a giant snowman.
14:02 this is how I felt with Mega Man X 3 when I realized a chip I had got early on screwed me out of the best upgrade in the game. It actually completely ruined my enjoyment of MMX3.

@@I_was_a_Bullfrog The game has pink upgrade capsules; you can only choose one of them and the others become inaccessible. If you wait until the end however there is a gold one which gives you all of the upgrades from the pink ones; the game never tells you about this gold one before you reach it.

Man, Luigi got dunked on in his own game. He spends the whole time slowly dragging that vacuum around the haunted hotel, but when Mario finally breaks out he parkours his way to the final boss. Dick.

Son, lemme tell you about how some shmups love hiding the ending of the game behind a 1 credit clear without any indication that there's a true final boss the player misses out on for using continues.
Game designers have a sadistic streak, I swear.
that's normal for shmup tho, unlike mario the family friendly platformer
it's funny how there's stuff like smash 4 and ultimate's difficulty drop if you die but then stuff like having to beat the mini game round to continue in ARMS.
But you can start all over again the shmup and one playthrough does not need too much time. Compared to a full adventure/platformer which saves your deaths. The comparison is off here.

I love games like this and Kirby's Adventure. They have very clear completion goals, generally. Very satisfying.

This was my very first 3D Mario game, and I remember finding it super difficult when I first played it back then, despite it being one of the easiest 3D Mario games
I think that's because this game is very well designed. The harder ones just seem to add bs for three sake of being hard but not actually fun. Like 99% of mario maker

In math there is shapes that is between 2 and 3 dimension. Most fractal area not grow by square but can be 2.32 and that shape by definition be 2.32 dimension.

I would disagree with your argument of "it's my fault I had to start over the game". Yeah, you could've done better, but completing the game shouldn't have required that for you in the first place.
Also, requiring that you replay every level just to hit the top of the flagpole with Luigi is dumb. Luigi should be a reward, not padding.
I agree, I even think it should get a rating of finish it because of that.
If I want to complete a game I want to take my time not being worried of starting all over again.
The game is short and completing is fun
He’s actually wrong about the five deaths thing. It’s not getting five deaths that prohibit you from the shiny stars, it’s picking up the leaf that does that. Dunno how he made that mistake

I was so pissed as a kid when I found out that I couldnt get the shiny stars. I didn't even use the shiny tanooki suit and i think its stupid the game considers just seeing the block spawn and actually using it as the same thing.
This is a vastly underrated game. Despite re-using a few things, the bonus worlds are basically brand new worlds, and the game keeps getting better as it goes on.

I actually Liked 3dLand more than 3Dworld. Because they weren't afraid of reusing mechanics they did more with them. Where in 3Dworld they felt like they had to do something new everytime so the game kinda feels like a tutorial level the entire way through. I know the made harder versions of some levels in the special worlds, but even those felt the need to reintroduce the mechanics before starting up, presumably because they are appearing a good amount of time after you played the original levels.
3D land was my first mario game ever and I loved it. I do have other favorite games, but 3D land and SM64 DS will always have a special place in my heart.
... remember the thank you! message? well... as a kid i didnt see the auto-moving platform... so i decided that i needed to platform along it... after the most difficult level in the game that i had to cheese through... yeah... didnt work out that well

Finally a popular CZcamsr giving 3D land a ton of praise that it deserves.
I was so disappointed when Scott the woz, nitro rad, and the one that offended me the most, relaxalax criticized it for being too safe and bland. This game is a masterpiece!!!!
Super Mario 3d Land was one of the first games I ever played and I remember when I got it for christmas I could not stop playing it. So many good memories with this game.

Just a correction, you have to beat every level with Mario and Luigi but you dont need to get the top of the flagpole with both, any of them will do.
The map features a marker that shows which characters had beaten the level and if the golden flagpole was reached
Also you dont need to beat the secret final level Special8-Crown to earn the 5th star, I have a save file where I got the 5 stars without beating the level yet.
And I dont know about the dying 5 times thing, I had died a lot in some levels and just ignored the white tanooki however I heard that for getting the shiny stars all I have to do is beat special-8crown.
I will have to finally beat that level to discover.

this actually brough a memory from a long time ago: 1st time i beat this game i wasnt seeing it. i had to do some eye exam and they put something in my eyes, so my vision was all blurry for the final stage

Seeing all those Mario games at the beginning and end of the video, that just makes me smile. So many great games and memories. And 3D Land is no exception

I remember finding out that you can get shiny stars when I saw it in CZcams video once, I found out after I fully completed the game I think. I lost the run 2 or 3 times in a ghost house because I wanted to go too quick. I had to complete the game 100% twice. I love this game though

Small mistake: Coin Coughers were around in 64. Their modern design was from this game though. Otherwise great video!

Sometimes I enjoy watching videos of the games more than actually playing them. I think this applies well to this game. Not a bad game, I just didnt care to continue after about 1/3 of the way through.
This was actually the first game I ever actually completed and I did it back in 2013 when I was 8 so thanks for doing this it brings me so many different memories.

They are very similar but different enemies, in 64 they were called Mr moneybags and have eyes inside the zipper rather than above it
You are right on spot with this one. My grampy was dying of cancer in August 2012 and I sat with my grampy and I was playing super Mario 3D land but I would feel this intense sadness everytime I backed out of the game. I beat the main game with ALL the coins but the grief overtook me so I gave up until 2018.
Dude you have such great mental fortitude to complete games. Replaying levels so many times makes quit so fast. Great job bro!

OMG I remember like a week ago talking to a friend about how some years ago I 100% this game , I felt so proud ( I'm 13 I had like 7-9 years when I beated It) and now I discover It was useless and now I can't get the shiny stars in that save file, that I even couldn't known existed
This game has just grown and grown on me since it came out. If it’s not my number one MARIO game at this point it’s at least in the top 3. It’s just solid and pure.

Is Jirard not going to mention that the final Bowser fight in this game is quite possibly the single best one in any Mario game? There's so much variety and energy and Bowser actually feels intimidating in a way I haven't felt since Super Mario 64.

Loved this episode! SM64 was my first Mario game, and I love all the 3D games the most, but playing 3D Land as an adult for the first time made me feel what I imagine it was like growing up with the classic 2D games. It's just a good time throughout.

I got this game when I got my 3DS in 4th grade (oh my god I’m 18 now) and absolutely loved it. The game is so well constructed and just...good. There’s essentially no part of the game I consider unfair or bothersome, and that’s a complement I can’t give to even some od my favorite games of all time. Anybody looking for a fun and enjoyable time needs to play this.

This game was my childhood! Its the first game i 100% because it was so fun! I know its not the most challenging game but to me the final levels in the game where you cant use an invincibility leaf was super hard. I was maybe 8 or 9 when it came out so i dont feel to bad about spending 2 years to beat it.

That's something we need in the gaming world nowadays...I'd like to say that these guys were brave after what happened to them during the big earthquake of 2011...it brought them together, and gaming communities need this kind of team work...they might have been in a rush, but at least they made a decent game! 😄😁👍
I've heard so many amazing things about this game, but somehow missed it back when it came out. I really need to play it sometime and it sounds like a fun game to complete. The shiny star thing does sound frustrating, however. Thank you for taking us through your experience with the game!
