  • Today in the shop I am testing out the Drill Doctor 750X drill bit sharpener from Work Sharp.
I ran through several different types of drill bits, doing a before and after for each one, while drilling through a 1/4" piece of factory annealed 1084 high carbon steel. While it does take a little bit of figuring out how to get the drill bit correctly set up in the chuck, the alignment port helps to ensure that when your drill bit is set, you get a really nice sharpen to the bits. Then if you want to go a step further with a split point, you can do that step also.
I am very pleased with the Drill Doctor 750X, and can say that I would recommend purchasing one, especially if you are drilling metal often. A sharp drill bit is a pleasure to use, and a dull one...
Thank you to Work Sharp for sending the Drill Doctor 750X over for me to use in the shop. It will definitely have a place of honor on my shop shelves from here on out.

Nice video. I have had a Drill Doctor for about 10 years. I usually buy the smaller drills in bulk packaging because they are cheaper that way and that is the ones that break the most. A lot of my drilling is done on job sites and is quite unlike the control and accuracy you have with a drill press. Once you get up above 1/4" bits is where the Drill Doctor comes into its own and pays for itself.
Decent bits @ 1/2" are from $12-$22. Prices drop as size decrease, but you can see that salvaging several bits a month or so can add up if you use your drill a lot. Even though my company pays for bits and such I still have to go get the bits. Having ths on hand is really great. At todays gas prices, just a trip to the store might cost more than a new bit if you're not close to the store.
Small enough to store and transport yet invaluable if you have to drill 30 or 40 holes through 1/2" steel or aluminum by hand. Easy to setup and use in minutes and can pay for itself in saved time, fuel, and the bits themselves.

Wow looks easy to use, now I want one. Luckily I saved all my old bits!

I love my Drill Dr. I think I wore mine out over the last 18 yrs. Time for a new one!

Thanks for the video. Great content as always.
I was taught to sharpen drill bits on a bench grinder when I was an apprentice, back in the early seventies.
There are plenty of videos on the internet that will show you how to sharpen a drill bit "the old way" - lol.
I would encourage people to learn - much more satisfaction that way, and much lighter on the pocket!

I wish I could learn that, but you had the advantage of a real teacher instead of a video. It would be a good skill to have.

Sharpening drills by hand on a bench grinder takes time both to learn and to do but sharp drills are priceless. Also proper work holding and use of lubricants when cutting metals help greatly to extend the life of the drill as well as helps to prevent drill breakage and accidents that happen because of misuse. It's not that hard to bolt down or clamp down a vise or a workpiece.

I have had one since they first came out. One of the most valuable tools I own. I did get the model that you have because I wore the first one out.

I've had one since they first came out the Classic Model 750. I sharpen all my bits down to the last flute. Then they become pins for other projects.

So where are you man, we're eagerly awaiting your video, it's been gone for a long time.
It was usually a Sunday, and here’s a surprise.
We assume you were on vacation.

Looks like you’re having better luck with the split point than I did. I actually changed to a coarser cutting wheel because the one it came with wouldn’t do the job. I love it for regular drill bits though

I have an older model and it has paid for itself many times over. For larger bits I have access to a comercial sharpener at work (machinist). Also do research on cutting angles and drill geometry, will help accuracy and drill life! Nice video review!

I've been sharpening my bits on the fine wheel side of my bench grinder, by eye, for 50+ years. I'm sure this machine is more precise but I think I'd rather spend the money on some good moonshine and stick with my old method. Just me.

worked in a machine shop apprentice for over a year. my job every day for a while was to sharpen the drill bits used by the drill bank, 40 or so drills in a production line. may have over 100 drill bits dulled every day. then they taught me how to sharpen the big bits, up to 2 inches, they were the bear because I got blamed if they were off or cut crooked. almost 60 years later I still watch people trying to use dull bits out of the package and have no way to sharpen them

Pretty awesome... I need one of these. I like that it goes up to 3/4'' bits! Wish it went up to 1''... lol
Do you think your sharpened bits were on par with new bits?

Is it worth it ? Over on Amazon, the Drill Doctor 750X goes for U.S. $ 135 to $ 180. I don't drill enough to justify spending that much.

I use a drill doctor - another type not the 375 X since years and I am happy with it so far. Meabe I am wrong or can‘t see it in the video but is n‘t the speed on your drillmachine a bit slow for those little drills?

Didn't even know that sharpening drill bits was an option... just watched a 15 minutes video about sharpening drill bits...

Even if you need to buy new bits, this could be helpful to keep you going, instead of having to stop all progress and run to the store.

I’ve often wondered if there was value in these sharpeners. Most of my drill bits are dull. I drill wood but my drills hit metal drilling out eyes of axe handles etc.

Anything less than industrial quality M42 won't reliably drill hardened steel.
