  • I snapped a drill bit when drilling into some mild steel for the 2x72 Belt Grinder build. So I decided to try the new Drill Doctor 750x.

    I've had my Drill Doctor for almost 20 years. It's never failed me. I have found that when you sharpen a bit and then it doesn't work well like your 4th bit, It can generally be traced back to not seating it properly in the collet. Just slightly off will cause the bit to be sharpened just a hair off. placing it back in the collet and resharpening usually fixes the problem.

    I just pulled my DD-750x out of the box and, in an effort to try something new, I decided to read the instructions. That led me to CZcams for the manufacturers video and ultimately to here. This is a super hands-on, in the workshop, practical application video! I, too, recently did the math and decided I've spent just about enough on drill bits over the past [insert number] years. Fortunately, like most of the DIYers who have, or will be, watching this, I don't have the inner strength to throw away perfectly dull drill bits - even ones that snapped off just above the drill chuck (no, I won't try sharpening those - but they help tell the story). Anyway, thanks for the boost of confidence, Brian. I'm off to resurrect the contents of my shoebox and prove to myself that it's ok keep some things that appear beyond the help of superglue and duct tape!

    I have the 400, which was discontinued several years ago. About once a year, give or take, my 3 brothers, 3 brothers in law, our father and I spend a day touching up all of our bits. Awesome piece of equipment.
    My only regret is that I didn't purchase the extra chuck to take up to 3/4 inch bits. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one on ebay or Craigslist one of these days.

    Checking the 'exit wound." Instantly liked your style and subscribed. It's only a good deal if it does what you needed of it. The cost of damage from cheap tools is never worth the perceived savings. There are times when a HF tool will work but I've found their drill bits to be something to avoid. It's less expensive for me to buy better tools than to buy more raw material, especially when it's an expensive raw material.
    Checked out the video because there's lots of spare time lately and I've had a Drill Doctor for years. There's always the opportunity to learn more.

After watching this video. I am buying a sharpener and quit judging others. Ask for their discards. I just paid 13.00 for an Irwin 3/8" titanium bit. Not sure if it wasnt that good out of box or it was me. (I was drilling into a light steel fence gate no oil) However the video demonstrated the value of the sharpener regardless of bit user abuse. . Great video Brian. I would say I'd ask Santa for a drill doctor..but he's already been and gone for the year. Great info and presentation. Some bits of info I've gained over the years, that I'd like to add to your info: make sure to use cutting fluid when drilling, take into account the specs for the material and depth of cut as well as specs on the type of bit you are using. And when I say specs, I mean hardness of material, material composition, RPM speed/rate for drilling, as well as what the bit material is recommended for. Also make sure to not overpower the bit when drilling..you can dull or snap a bit quick doing this. Let the tool do the work. Just "bits" of info I've had to learn the hard way over the last 25 years. LOL Merry Christmas to you, your family and all of your followers!

    To sharpen a broken off drill bit, I simply take it to a wheel grinder first. I point the bit directly at the wheel and push the bit straight into the wheel to grind away all of the damage giving the bit a flat end. That way little spring grippers on the Drill Doctor properly position the bit when you put in the the Drill Doctor's chuck. (I know your way eventually worked, but as we could see, you had to readjust the bit a few times).

I just can’t justify spending that kind of money on drill bits or tools in general! Ya know I can go buy craftsman tools for a quarter of the price of snap-on or matco tools and craftsman has the same lifetime warranty on their tools as snap on or matco, and I never ever had an issue returning a broken tool and getting a new replacement for it!!! So why pay 4 times as much for a tool? I Just don’t get that at all!!!

    Titanium drill bits are for suckers!
    Once you wear through the thin titanium coating, the rest of the bit is just steel. Carbide drill bits are carbide all the way through!
    I have had the Drill Doctor model 500 and model 750 for years and if something were to happen to either one, I would immediately buy another.
    Here's a couple of tips: 1. Drill alignment in the chuck is everything. 2. don't fully tighten the chuck until you have carefully removed the chuck from the alignment port. If you fully tighten the chuck while in the alignment port, you can change the angle.

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  Před 5 měsíci

      All good points! Thank you! I'll give that a shot with my drill doc.

    • @CALVINLNIKONT
      @CALVINLNIKONT Před 5 měsíci

      I made a mistake. I said carbide when I meant to say cobalt. Cobalt drill bits are not made of pure cobalt, but rather a steel alloy with 5 to 8 percent cobalt. The 5-percent alloy is known as M35 grade, and the 8-percent alloy is M42. The cobalt increases the strength of the steel and makes it more heat-resistant; this is an important factor in drilling hard materials because the friction of metal against metal can produce high temperatures that damage the material or the drill bit. Bosch, for instance, makes a cobalt drill bit that can withstand temperatures of up to 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit (593 degrees Celsius). Cobalt drill bits are cobalt alloy through and through and not just a coating like titanium bits. For this reason, they can be sharpened relatively easily with cutting fluid while retaining their strength and durability (although the gold color may wear off).@@HouseMadeUS

    The only thing bad about the HFT drill bits is the heat treatment which makes them on the Brittle side but for $9.00 you just can't go wrong, I have three sets around the bench & use my Drill Doctor to sharpen them. But for really hard metals especially small diameters I prefer M42 cobalt drill bits but you need to keep them cool but they will drill through Spring or Hardened steel with coolant.
