  • It's pretty typical for a shop to have a drawer full of dull drill bits, present company included. Hence the arrival of the Drill Doctor X2 Drill Bit Sharpener is a welcome sight. We quickly emptied our drawers, sorted our bits, and went to town trying out the Drill Doctor. Even though it's fairly simple to use, there's a lot of engineering going to work during the sharpening process. This X2 will sharpen 118-degree drill bits, but can not handle 135-degree split-tip drill bits. You can get the Drill Doctor X2 for $119.

I have a Drill Doctor 500X and have saved a lot of money on drill bits, I really like how easy it is to sharpen a bit up to a half inch in size. good video.

I have the 750x. Game changer. I also had that drawer full of dull bits. I bought a bunch of those baggies that have the white spot to write on. I have all my sharpened spares ready and bagged. I put dull bits in the dull bin. I have enough spares that maybe once or twice a year I sit down for a couple hours and get them all done and bagged.

Good job, very informative. BTW the secondary slope behind the leading edge is clearance, it prevents rubbing, chattering and heat buildup.

nice video. i have an older model, not sure what one but it can do split tips. this one to me seems a little more complicated to align the bit quickly. other models have the little arm things that grab the bit, align and set the depth much quicker. as mentioned though, this is more of a entry diy level. one thing i notice with mine is, the better quality the bit to begin with, the better it seems to work. you cant take a garbage bit and expect miracles. i have had a drill doctor since the very first one that came out (unfortunately got broken) but these are definately the easiest to use and are well worth it.

You're supposed to plunge sharpen the masonry bits not rotate sharpen like the 118 bits.

Honestly, it’s easier to learn to hand sharpen them on a bench grinder. Just keep practicing with some really crappy drill bits and watch a few videos on how to do it. Once you get the feel for it, it’s so fast to sharpen drill bits that way. I suppose if your bit was really messed up and the angle was completely off, I could see using a drill doctor to re establish that angle.

I've watched the oldtimers do it, but I can never get the hang of it. I always end up either making the chisel off-center, or just not making a leading edge. Thanks for watching.
