  • In this video I go over the Drill Doctor 500X and show how to sharpen drill bits. I cover how to measure your bits to see if they are 118 or 135 degrees prior to sharpening as well as how to sharpen masonry bits.
I give a final review on the drill doctor and at the risk of giving it away, I love this tool and an mot ashamed to admit that everyone should probably have one if they go through bits like I do!
There are various models available from Drill Doctor. In this video I show the DD500X. This model is virtually identical to the DD350X as well as the DD350X. The difference between the models being the drill bit angles that can be sharpened. The 350x will only do 118 degrees (and can reshaope a 135 to 118 as can the upper two models). The 500X can do both 118 and 135, the 750X can do a range from 114 to 140 degrees. IT can also sharpen bits up to 3.4 inch. The 350X and 500X both have ranges from 3/32" to 1/2"
Incidentally, I actually reshape a 135 degree bit to 118 in this video. I also cover how to measure the angle of the twist drill bit you want to sharpen.

I bought an ancient, barely used DD500 classic off my equally ancient neighbor at his garage sale for $10, years ago. Never touched it, never really thought about it. Tonight I was wrecking bits right and left trying to drill 6 progressively larger holes in a pair of replacement yokes for a 200 year old fire dept wagon my blacksmith friend had unintentionally (I hope) hardened. Even after torching it and letting it cool, none of my 1/2" bits could begin cutting into the 5/16" holes I'd managed to get in.
In desperation, I pulled the DD out of the corner, and RTFM. It *saved* *my* *ass* -- my 1/2 bits sliced through that steel like butter after a doctoring. Now I wanna sit down with a glass of whiskey and sharpen all my bits.

Is that the $109 one or the $179. One?
