Having dominated the second half of the 60s by winning the 1966 World Cup, England could not show itself in the European championships after the third place in Euro1968, and could not participate in the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. Euro 1980 was an opportunity for them to show themselves again in World football. But first they had to qualify.

Loved how back then at away games the commentator sounded like he was on the phone,
Loved both kits the best ever England have had.
15:15 Bulgaria wasn’t that shut behind the Iron Curtain as some might have thought. Pink Floyd was on the radio, Fawlty Towers on the telly, I watched Forest winning the European Cup, Keegan’s autobiography: ‘Football and I’, was serialised in one of our weekly magazines. Then they came to Sofia. We were looking up to England, they were everything that was right, the whole better world! And now, how times have changed
It’s more a case of delusion then. Things weren’t good in England in late 70s.
Keegan was certainly the man at this time.....king Kev..
@Jonty Arnold, he and Brooking really played well together. It's a shame they were both injured for the World Cup in 1982.
Keegan truly fantastic player an one of the top England players ever
Untill Dalglish came along.
If only England had Qualified in 1978 ,you would have seen Kevin Keegan at his peak,he was past his best by 1982.
For me England was a good team with many great players : Keegan, Clemence,Neal, Kennedy,Hoddle,Brooking and others. In Italy a no good Euro, but a good World Cup in 1982 ( some great games and no losers). From Italy
Unfortunately they lost Keegan for injury just before Spain 82. All players you named were great.
They only lost a very tight match against Italy in Euro 80 and had a Woodcock goal disallowed against Belguim 15 mins from end..won the Spain game..
@@kingkane1051 hai perfettamente ragione! Grave dimenticanza mia !!! Sorry my friend
@@kingkane1051 Belgium were a damn lucky team, and often a referee favorite. Only match they were really great was the WC '82 opening vs. Argentina.
This is a great channel.
Kevin Keegan, best of England😀⚽️
People always says it was such a shame Best never played in a finals. You could say the same thing about Brady. Tragic. 10 years later, he gets sent off in the final game for Ireland vs Bulgaria, and misses Euro 88...
Not a patch on Keegan.
@@BurtonRdForever Brady's hair was better
Brookings passes and corners were excellent.
Brooking and Keegan were the main men for England in this era. If they'd both been fit for the 1982 World Cup I think England might have come close to winning it.
@gwangi64, they could read each other's game almost telepathically.
Ron Greenwood should have taken the fit and in form Withe and Shaw from Villa.
@@richardhumphrey2685 Not sure about Shaw..Withe was in the squad but the case for Cowans and Morley was so obvious..
The last game v rep of Ireland my first ever game as an 11 year old 😀
Being a spurs fan pains me to say it but Trevor brooking was a fantastic corner taker. Overpaid pricks nowadays want to watch brooking here
Hoddle such an artist
Great work uploader! Really well done. Like the M83 soundtrack too.
Thank you for your comment. Please keep watching for new videos :)
Brian Moore- what a commentator!
Phil Neil nearly done a brooking before brooking with that goal against Denmark
England would have done well in Argentina. They were a tough nut to crack in those days under Greenwood. The 1978-80 side was the best in my lifetime.
Simonsen went in to be a legend at Charlton Athletic,English hooligans disgraced the nation at the Euros but six years later the Danes had a great team (and Hummel kit) at Mexico 86.
Good to see.....although ALL qualification matches for England is a little inaccurate.....the Northern Ireland 1 England 5 match was missing!
Memories from my youth
Me too. Great to see these matches again which have rarely been aired since.
Keegan lovely amazing
Thanks for posting!
And a special thank you for keeping the original audio (even though it wasn't great in place, but it is what it is) rather than the usual cheesy music - well done!
10:40 Love it how Keagan runs behind the photographers, must have really annoyed them. 😄
All i want for christmas is an 1982 Admiral England home kit
if you find it, PLEASE reply to this comment by letting me now where you got it from, even thought the 1982 kit, you can get online, all the best in your search......
For a while Score Draw made replica ones (I had one but left it behind when I moved to America 😭).
Tbf that was a fairly easy group to get out of.
Although the Danes finished bottom, you could see even then they had the basis of a good team, and so it proved a few years later.
Denmark always had a good team but the problem was that the national team was treated as a summercamp by the players until we got a german trainer Sepp Piontek.
Latchford walks on water👊🏼💙
I agree. Keegan was a crack.
Did he play in Germany at that time ?
To win at football, you need a great player in your side - and that is something that England have lacked for the last 50 years. France - a similar country to England in terms of population - has won many trophies in recent years, but each time they've won, it was with a great player: European Championship 1984 (Michel Platini), World Cup 1998 (Zinadine Zidane), World Cup 2018 (Kylian Mbappe).
That's rubbish. Gazza. Beckham. Barnes. Scholes. Hoddle. Waddle. Keegan. Shearer. All world class.
@@donbrogan3158 some of those players that you mentioned were excellent - but never dominated tournaments the same way as Platini, Zidane and Mbappe. Barnes, Scholes and Hoddle rarely performed at the same level for their country as they did for their club. There is a big difference in having a really good player, and a great one. Paul Gascoigne was the closest - but, sadly, pressed the self-destruct button.
@@Inglese001 I see what you're saying. I'd say Gazza was there, he dominated Italia '90. Shearer '96 perhaps.
@@donbrogan3158 you're right. Best player I've ever seen play for England.
Rooney an Gazza had good tournament Rooney sadly injured after being on fire in 04 . England played safe an within themselves but were also unlucky with goals disallowed v Portugal Argentina and Germany at crucial times.
This was a great England offense.. Keegan and Brooking were beasts..
Listen to Wembley in those days.
You're spot on, I remember those matches all on ITV/BBC free to air, chilly nights and Keegan and Brooking. The best. Wankers today, no passion.

Keegan 👌
Kevin Keegan didn't half score some goals .👌👌👌
Keegan the best English player bar none. How the fk did we not win anything with this team of players? Criminal.
I disagree, Kevin was a decent player but we had better players, that were more skillful, like Hoddle, Kevin was a goalscorer, and bloody good at it.....
@@pisceansith6915 The Euro 80 match against Italy, Greenwood should have pushed Keegan up and subbed Hoddle on to try to win the match by getting him to get balls through to Keegan..It was Keegan working too hard in midfield that allowed Tardelli to break up pitch for the winner..
England were pretty rubbish at the beginning of this campaign with bad defending and seemingly only being able to score from set pieces, but improved a lot from the half way point and towards the end and became a lot more of a team. This side peaked in early 1980 when they didn't just beat but took apart Spain in the Nou Camp 2-0. Then Trevor Francis got injured and was out of Euro 80. Plus the manager didn't pick Laurie Cunningham or Glenn Hoddle. Oh well. Great memories though.
Oh, one other thing - was it really that hard to find a way to get Terry McDermott in the team regularly? The thought of him playing in that Euro 80 match against Italy the way did for Liverpool at that time, I'd have loved to have seen that (I say, 42 years later lol).
Yep Tony Woodcock scored a goal against Belguim in Euro 80 that was ruled wrongly for offside, if it had stood England would have been finalists that year...the injury to Francis was a killer since him and Woodcock formed a deadly duo up front at the time..
Another point, Hoddle was in the squad but was not brought on as sub in the critical tight match against Italy (Ron Atkinson was urging this) and Bryan Robson was excluded from the squad altogether..
England skated through this group.
The point about McDermott is well taken..He should have been used against Spain in 1982 on the right of the midfield..with Francis played on top,he never played any minute of the tourney..
Wasn't Pat Jennings the #1 keeper in the world at the time? Kevin Keegan was a beast.
Don’t understand why we have to suffer foreign commentary haven’t got an effing clue what they say. This is about England; and I want Motty or Brian Moore (the voice of football).
"suffer foreign commentary"😆 Where do you think the surviving footage comes from?
Why bother with a keeper , Shilton can't sort his own Bollocks out .
I agree Shilts should have not been between the sticks in WC 90', he was shite and we had better goalkeepers on the bench, that would have stopped the Germans given the chance.......
@@pisceansith6915 Shilton saved England against Cameroon.
Ireland were a great team at landsdowne Road not many teams won there and that includes England France Holland and Portugal in massive games not friendlies
💐💐💐
The days when Turkey, Bulgaria were shite and England not much better.
Good England side, but performed poorly in the finals
End of the lost decade for England. Never developed the national team tactically and so far behind other nations at this time. Really have to blame the FA. Talent was there as evidenced by the club successes but tactical naivety and poor selection policy hampered progress. I really think Clough or Robson could have done something special with the talent available. Much better tactically than Revie and Greenwood. Happier innocent days. Great perms.......
Greenwood's appointment was a waste with players like Regis/Statham/Cowans/Morley/Devonshire/Anderson/Alvin Martin...Clough would also have used existing players better like Paul Mariner/Terry Mcdermott/Ray Kennedy far better..
Take the key game against Spain in 1982 WC, why did Greenwood play Trevor Francis on the right of midfield?, no Hoddle and only brought on Keegan and Brooking late...?....Play Terry McDermott on the right of midfield (Rix on the left), Brooking behind an attacking duo of Keegan with Francis pushed up...?...Come HT not working replace Brooking with Hoddle and say Keegan with Mariner and get Mariner to play deeper and wider of Francis so the defence could be pulled apart..Jack Charlton not even Clough would have seemed the case for that..
The worst qualifications in the past for Bulgaria.
I prefer to Germany!!! England only have good singers!!! England is no more than these musicians mainly from the 1980`s!
Blimey Clemence looks rubbish now...I didn't think so at the time but he is all over the place!
Ikr, in that first game especially, very poor.
Yeah you're right I used to watch him when he come to spurs and I thought he was great but watching him now he's shit in every old England game I watch
@@sunnyjim1355 Couldn't be blamed for any of the goals and saved a one on one at 2-2.
