- Chicago returned to Baltimore after nearly four years with a new guitarist, a new bassist, and a new keyboards player. This is original member Robert Lamm leading the band on his own classic song, “Beginnings,” from the very first album, “Chicago Transit Authority,” recorded the same week as the Beatles 1969 rooftop concert.
- Hudba
Nobody up there onstage with Chicago is having more fun than James Pankow. Jus watch him work!
This has been my favorite song since 1971. It's remarkable that Robert is still around and healthy and singing it.
It’s really a great song. Way under appreciated: The images it evokes; The singalong chorus of “whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa...” ; the bass lines before the words “Only the beginning.”; And finally, the trombone and trumpet “duels.”
@@johnbramsey And the long instrumental at the end ending in the Latin-style percussion. I have that song on a karaoke track that's the entire 7 minute original versions.
And his vocal range is still pretty much the same
@@Shambar18 Well, he's a baritone, so he doesn't write any songs with notes that he can't reach.
Long live Chicago! The official band of my life. Robert Lamm is the glue of 57 years...
Yo desde el 69 mi grupo favorito de toda la vida saludos
As long as Robert is there, the time machine is still in working order.50 years later, and still Great.
Wow. Robert Lamm. The guy still has it. Amazing!
Facts! Gotta love Robert! 💖💥😁💥💖
@@jessicaforde8725 In addition to being a talented composer, singer and performer, he's a class act.
Best use of brass section in rock music
I am from Chicago and I heard this song 50 years ago. The band is great (even with the changes) but Robert is superb, as always
Thank you for the "like"... the originals are as old as myself!!!
Great sound, still rockin ! Thanks for being there for us fans. Robert Lamm is just plan awesome one vocals.
3 original members, a little older but still great!
A little older ?? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Yeah sure.
Saw them on Staten Island in April...they were unbelievable
I loved them in the 70's and still do! You boys are amazing! Still great looking 👌 by the way! All kidding aside, keep on truckin' and never forget our Terry!!❤

How much i love this wonderful song
One of the great love songs, simple and heartfelt. God bless Bobby Lamm
saw them in 1974 at the Long Beach Convention Center and they were great and still are! will be playing their music at our 50 year High School Reunion on Saturday!
Simply amazing. God bless them.
Love this band! Depth with the music but also commercially appealing. Love that you are still doing it and doing it strong! Berklee prof who had Jim's son in my class.
I Love the Group Chicago, this song Beginnings takes me to 1972,when my older brother was playing it on 8track teaching me how to drive Robert Lamm has a timeless spirit & voice,

Someday I hope to see Chicago.
All of your songs are very amazimg
the best band forever
They sound good
Good old days😢
❤❤❤❤❤
WOW Robert sounds amazing!
Chicago as a band is pretty much on life support these days, but Lamm at least still has it.
These guys have Leonid and Friends to thank for their recent resurgence.
There’s a live version of this very song by the L & F band performed three days later. It’s on CZcams. It’s good but there’s nothing like seeing the originals perform.
@@nothankyou7538 There is only 3 originals on stage.
The best Chicago concert I’ve ever heard or seen is the one from Tanglewood in 1970. Here is the CZcams of “Beginnings.” czcams.com/video/pizRRft3_8Y/video.html Still with Robert, Jimmy, and Lee, but also Terry, Walt, Danny, and Peter!
I don't think Robert has ever missed a concert
I think you're correct!
Summer 2019. Robert experienced vertigo symptoms and needed to miss several concerts. Before that, only a broken leg in 1975 kept him off stage.
Is Neil's guitar plugged in? Such a great group of musicians! It's like America's Classical Rock Music. .....
Everything is wireless.
That The First I've Seen Robert Lamm Play Guitar...He's Usually The Keyboardist...
It's like seeing Eagles Don Henley playing Guitar when we are used to see him behind the Drum Kit.
I'm glad I saw Chic twenty years ago. This group isn't happening and needs to retire.
You saw Chic? The group behind “Boogie Oogie Oogie?” Ha ha
I saw Chicago back in 1981 when the band complement was all the original members except for Terry Kath who passed only a couple of years prior. Fast forward, I sas them again a Few weeks ago in Oneida NY (Turningstone Casino)... I will tell you, they were more with it, tight, and much more energetic (Pankow, Loughnane, and Lamm, plus the rest of then Band than I remember they were back in '81. They are improvising the solos here so there is always a chance for klunker note to hit from time to time.. Aside from the musicianship, Pankow was a RIOT, always playing the crowd.. again, with more energy than I ever remembered.. He's definitely enjoying life!
Exactly. I agree, retire. They should've shut it down after Terry's accidental death. He was Chicago. If they wanted to keep it together, shut down Chicago, rename the band, get a new guitarist, and move on under that name.
Just shadows of when they were the greatest band on earth :(
@priority But after all, aren’t we all just shadows of our former selves in the end?..
They need Danny Seraphine back on the drums.
Danny was a special drummer, no doubt about it. Personally, my favorite Danny drum part is from the 1970 Chicago II song “To Be Free,” from the Make Me Smile medley AKA “Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon.”
I feel sorry for all the people who never got to see this band in their prime. With all the original band members. I think they need to walk away before they become an embarrassing joke. I have seen them live 10 times. And I am here to tell you it is offically over. Thanks for the good memories boys.
As long as they are having fun and still enjoy playing and their fans are coming out to see them and filling the arenas who are you to say they need to end their careers? They're still entertaining. They still sound good. Walter would still be playing but he has heart issues and early Altzheimers. They fired Danny years ago. They put Pete between a rock and a hard place giving him an ultimatum to not do a solo album or else leave the band. Terry we lost to an unfortunate accident with him not accounting for the cartridge in the chamber. Yes it'd be great to have all seven together but Robert and Jimmy and Lee are still doing great. Robert turns 79 in October. Jimmy just turned 76 in August. Lee turns 77 in October. Pretty amazing those three guys are pushing 80 years old and still have the health and vitality to perform all these shows each year. You should be giving them credit instead of making fun of them. They're certainly not doing it because they need the money. They love what they do.
@@carlalattanzi6873 Its over just like Daryl Hall.Just remember the great times and amazing voices they had.
@@Giminey I saw Chicago three times. Twice at the old Boston Garden in 1973 and 1974 and once at the old Patriot's football stadium called Schaefer Stadium in 1975 with a big concert with other bands. Chicago was second to last to perform and The Beach Boys came on last. Fleetwood Mac played earlier than Chicago. Jimmy Pankow and Lee Loughnane still play great. Bobby Lamm playing guitar while singing Beginnings is different to see and it's nice seeing him standing on stage. I don't know if I looked for recent videos where he's not the lead singer if he'd be back on keyboards or still standing on stage. Maybe fans want to see him on stage as there's only 3 originals left. Too bad Danny and Pete weren't still in the band. Walt would be if he didn't have health issues. I loved Daryl Hall's voice. Does he sound awful now?
@@carlalattanzi6873 glad you got to see Chicago in their prime. Yes Daryl even admitted he has voice problems. He changed the songs and lowered the key. He has to sing in bursts and not long and flowing like he used to. And more audience participation. To drown out his vocal problems.
@@Giminey After you mentioned Daryl I found a live video of him in Texas it was really recent. I want to say August 2023. He was on a piano. He sang "Every time you go away" the song Paul Young made famous but Daryl wrote it. I was really surprised to hear how his voice sounded when he tried to hit high notes. His voice cracked. It was shocking. I watched an interview of him with Dan Rather from 2014. He was 67 or 68 at the time depending if he'd had his birthday in October yet. He looked great. He didn't sing. He talked about getting Lyme disease in 2006 the same year he started Daryl's House. So Daryl turns 77 next month. What happened to his voice? Rather asked him if he used drugs back in those days and he said neither him or John were drug users. He said drugs didn't agree with him. He said I'm not going to say I never tried drugs. Rather said whiskey? Daryl said I drank a little. So those weren't problems for him and John. He said that's why John and I are still here, still coherent. Robert Lamm hasn't lost his voice in the way Daryl has and he's born 10/13/44. Daryl is born 10/11/46. Both artistic, talented Libras that sing, wrote music, play piano/keyboards and play guitar. So what could have damaged Daryl's voice?
Cant really hear Robert over the music.😮😮😮😮
A little heavy on the snare
Que pasa con el sonido de esa bateria ?
What's up with the sound of that drum kit?
Live recordings from the audience will never be perfect. I think the drums are just fine here.
Pankow is looking more and more like ByeDan nowadays.
I don’t understand. What’s a “ByeDan”? Anyway thanks for viewing!
@@johnbramsey Your prez
Got it.
I don’t see the resemblance and Jimmy has way more energy than Joe Biden does.
Why did Danny Seraphine, Chicago’s great drummer, leave the band? Was there bad blood between him and the other members of this legendary group?
Danny was fired in 1989/1990 for personality and musical conflicts with band and staff members. He wrote a book called “Street Player” which explains what happened. Tris Imboden was then Chicago’s for 28 years.
@@nothankyou7538
Thanks for the information on Danny Seraphine’s departure from Chicago.
I saw Tris Imboden perform with the band in 1998; he’s also a superb musician.
The wonderful instrumental break by Jimmy and Lee is way off here. A bit out of town and some off notes. Maybe a bad night?
They just freestyle it. They don't try to stay true to the original.
The minor imperfections prove that this is live and not prerecorded.
Jimmy's SO sharp on the high C#'s. God love him, but that's just painful to listen to.
Generally, great music ended in 1971.
They almost sound as good as Leonid & Friends !!
That's what good American rock bands do.
I never cared for them after the tragic death of the Great Terry Kathy. Even though they are all great musicians. I would rather listen to DS’s California Transit Authority with Marc Bonilla.
Terry Kath
Damn, those watered down Seraphine charts suck.
I don’t know what that means but keep in mind that this was footage taken from the audience with a phone. No way this captures the full sound. Hopefully it captured the spirit, though! Won’t get many more chances to see Chicago and Robert Lamm singing this song.
@@johnbramsey I meant it’s kind of depressing to hear the original Seraphine percussion charts dumbed down. Sound quality overall is very good.
Walfredo has many of his live drum performances posted on Facebook. facebook.com/wreyesjr.1
@@scottyaniga4450Early Danny, both live and on record, was amazing! My favorite drum part that he ever did was in “To Be Free,” from the Make Me Smile medley.
@@johnbramsey Yes, an excellent example of Danny’s talent!
Maybe time to retire the name.

Walfredo Reyes Jr. (born Walfredo de los Reyes Palau IV; December 18, 1955) is a Cuban American musician who is an expert in drum set and auxiliary percussion, and a music educator and clinician. He has performed with many jazz, Latin, World music, World fusion, Afro-Cuban, and rock bands as a touring, session recording, and full-time player/performer.
@@randyjordan5521 I saw Chicago a few weeks ago at Turningstone Casino in Oneida NY (about 1/2 hr East of Syracuse... Wally Reyes was INCREDIBLY entertaining during the show. He certainly took off where Serahine left... \
@@johndenicola6173 When I saw the group perform about 7 years ago, Wally was the percussionist and Tris Imboden was the drummer. They did a back and forth "drum-off" bit during "I'm A Man." At the end of it, Wally hit himself in the head with a drumstick as though it was accidental, for comedy effect. Look for it on CZcams if you haven't seen it.
I've always thought that Danny's drum solo on that song was one of the best ever. It was recorded in 1969, just as rock groups were beginning to feature long drum solos like that. Back then, the only thing I'd heard comparable to it was Ringo's solo on the Abbey Road album.
Where the hell is the band? There is only one horn
4:38 here? And all over this song! Horns. Trombone, trumpet, saxophone.
You sure you’re commenting on the right song?
